TLU extending Spring Break, Guadalupe County youth moving classes online until April 8 feeling the impact of COVID-19

They say they want to assure everyone that the measures discussed were not made lightly, but they believe they are necessary at this time. Because the situation is very fluid, they are committed to providing their campus community with daily updates going forward. They encourage updates available through By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera Seguin Radio KWED and the Seguin (Seguin) -- TLU students will be on Daily News, the TLU website or via any TLU social media sites. Spring Break a little while longer. Texas Lutheran University today announced that while there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the TLU campus or in the Seguin community, the university is taking precautions to ensure the health and well-being of faculty, staff, students, and the Seguin community. They say they believe they have a responsibility to institute proactive health and safety measures to decrease the spread and potential exposure of COVID-19 to vulnerable populations.

Among the measures that came out of their decision was to extend spring break by one week so students will now be out from March 16 to March 27.

They say the week of March 23-27 will be used for faculty to prepare to convert their classes to online classes. From March 30 to April 8, students will attend classes online. Prior to April 8, we will assess the COVID-19 situation and determine if we continue with online classes or if students can return The Safety and Emergency to campus. Management Committee (SEMC), along with the President’s Cabinet and TLU is expected to provide further Faculty Executive Committee, met updates on outdoor athletic events and Thursday to discuss plans for classes, other large group gatherings. events, travel, and other situations that Additional details can be found on the TLU website at tlu.edu may be impacted by COVID-19.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Guadalupe County) -- While there are no confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus in Seguin or Guadalupe County, it's timing has definitely disappointed a group of local youth. While most kids were spending their time at the beach or sleeping in late, an elite group of kids

from Guadalupe County were preparing for what they say was the "big show." This week's cancellation of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has unfortunately impacted several families here in the county. In the interest of public health, the city of Houston and the Houston Health Department ordered that every event of the rodeo shut down. See SHOW. page 2

Youth Show projects out following cancellation of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo able to go with her steer Stetson. Not only would this have been her first year to show but she was excited to bring what she believes was a contender to the largest stock show environment.

SHOW, continued from page 1 Among those in the mix of that Wednesday afternoon announcement was Michael Woerndel, the Ag Teacher for Navarro. Woerndel, who at the time was in Houston, says things happened quick and came as a complete surprise.

Plus, she was excited to have been invited to participate in this year's calf scramble giving her the chance to earn an additional cash prize. She says because of the calf scramble, here entire road map, this past year, led her to Houston.

"But we did have a heifer that came in and they got it unloaded and right after they got it unloaded, they made the announcement that they were closing the stock show and so they are sending the heifer home without showing," said Woerndel. Woerndel says fortunately for many Navarro students, participation came early giving them an opportunity to at least bring their projects before judges. "We are very lucky. Most of our animals showed at the beginning of the show and so they are done. We are only going to have I believe on the top of my head, three kids that are not going to get to show. Now, we do have several teams who -- we were supposed to be coming up here for Teams and we will not be able to participate in the contest -- our wildlife team, the dairy cattle team and the livestock team will not be able to come up here to participate," said Woerndel. Also pretty shocked by this week's news was Dwayne Reiley who has been helping to prepare Marion students. Houston officials say it was 1973 that a stock show and rodeo

Reagan Rodriguez was last cancelled. "It was strange. As of Saturday, the mayor of Houston had said everything was a go and that they were good so it was a real quick turnaround there that they changed their mind. We were shocked that they didn't at least let the show

part of it go on. I understand the general public, closing that down but we kind of felt that the show would still happen," said Reiley. The impact of the cancellation is great for Marion as 50 to 60 students were looking to

participate from start to finish. Reiley says in that group alone, 20 projects were steers. A handful of Seguin Ag students are also still trying to reel it all in. Seguin High School Junior Reagan Rodriguez couldn't help but show emotion as she talked about not being

"A steer takes a lot more than just putting a halter on. It's more of what goes into it. It's not all about the final, here's my steer take it. It's what I've learned through it. I just wish people knew like the dedication it truly takes to get where I am right now. I was looking forward to Houston because I knew in my heart that Stetson was an amazing calf and there's nothing better I can do for him. I know that it is a competition. Everything about the show industry is about competition but it's more of what Stetson's brought me in the past year and I wish people knew how important it really is and I wish they did realize how much it truly hurts us as the student that is showing because there is so much that comes out of major shows like scholarships because with my college, whenever I do leave in a couple of years, I can't get that scholarship from Houston because you have to be there two years to show and since I'm not there this year, I can't qualify next year," said Reagan.

Approximately 30,000 competitors were expected to participate in this year's youth livestock show. Up until the announcement on Wednesday, hundreds of families were on site waiting in long lines to check in and/or unloading their trailers and other materials for the show. Merkel Tells Germans Up To 70 Percent Could Contract COVID-19

(New York, NY) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. has topped onethousand with 32 deaths. Michigan is the latest state to report its first case and New Jersey, which has two confirmed cases, is reporting its first death. Most of the U.S. cases have been in New York and Washington State. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is deploying the National Guard to New Rochelle to implement a one-square mile containment area, meaning schools and houses of worship will be closed for two-weeks.

(Berlin) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel [[ ANG-gull-uh MUR-kull ]] is warning her country up to 70-percent of them could contract the COVID-19 coronavirus. That would be about 58 million people. Parliament went silent after she made the announcement. Merkel said since there is no cure, the focus for health officials is to slow the spread. There are more than 14-hundred confirmed cases of the virus in Germany.

NYC Psychologist Offers Advice On Coping With COVID-19 Anxiety (New York, NY) -- A New York City psychologist says she's seeing a lot of COVID-19 anxiety. Dr. Robi Ludwig says the best thing you can do is to arm yourself with the facts by turning to CDC or World Health Organization websites for information. She says health experts have made it clear that seniors and those with underlying health conditions or compromised immune systems are most at risk. So Dr. Ludwig says if you're in one of those groups, practice social distancing by staying home and making your home your fortress. She's advising the rest of us not to panic, but to practice the same health precautions recommended for the flu including frequent hand-washing, covering a cough with your elbow and staying home from work when you're sick.

Woman Stuck In Apartment With Dead Husband (Borghetto Santo Spirito, Italy) -- An Italian woman is stuck inside her apartment with her dead husband's body because of a coronavirus quarantine. The woman's husband died Monday from coronavirus and she's been in her apartment with him since then. The mayor of her northern Italian town says no one is allowed to approach the body right now because of stringent restrictions in place to prevent the spread of the virus. In the meantime, the woman has reportedly been shouting for help from her balcony for two days.
