Movies in the Park hits the big screen this Friday

(Seguin) – This Friday night marks the return of Movies in the Park.

The city of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department is launching the start of its 2025 movie schedule at local parks.

Jennifer Sourdellia, Seguin’s public information officer, says the city will be kicking things off this Friday with a family favorite at Max Starcke Park.

“We are so excited to be kicking off Movies in the Park for our Spring season this Friday. It’s going to be a free movie

under the stars held at the large pavilion over at Starcke Park. The movie gets underway at 7:45 but we do encourage people to get there before the show because we are going to have free face painting and while I can’t say the name of the movie, I will tell you that there is going to be some special guests there before the movie and they are Minions,” said Sourdellia.

Sourdellia says the night out is simple and fun for all ages.

In a Pickle Festival debuts in NB

Mouth watering event to be held this Saturday

In a pickle of what to do this Spring Break weekend?

If the answer is yes, then you might want to let those salivary glands point you in the right direction.

That direction would be to neighboring New Braunfels for the inaugural In a Pickle Festival. The festival is set for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday at the Comal County Fairgrounds.

The much-anticipated festival dubbed “all things pickled” is anticipated to be a sold-out crowd of about 30,000 people. The unique and flavorful event will host a wide range of fun from foods such as pickle cotton candy and ice cream to several pickle-themed contests.

Although this will be the first time the pickle festival will be held in New Braunfels, it’s not the first time that the event has been organized and hosted by Founder Krystal Wertman.

“We are actually in the

Kingwood, Texas area and we created this festival seven years ago to bring liveliness back to Kingwood after Hurricane Harvey. I’m actually a vendor in the Kingwood area selling jelly and pickles and of course, it flooded all of Kingwood so all the businesses shut down -- the homes and this was just a way to kind of revitalize the community and we also help bring awareness to the non-profit, Hunter Syndrome which we have two young males affected by it here in our area which is unheard of – it is so rare so that’s how we got started,” said Wertman.

Traffic light officially on at dangerous county intersection

(Marion) -- Guadalupe County is passing on some exciting news from TxDOT.

Sharing that news during Tuesday’s Guadalupe County Commissioners Court meeting was Commissioner Pct. 4 Stephen Germann.

“Commissioners and public and everybody, (I) was handed this before commissioners’ court. It is from TxDOT. Guadalupe County, the new traffic signal at the intersection of FM 78 and 1044 will be activated on Tuesday, March 11 improving both safety and traffic flow in the area. Thank God! It’s a done deal,” said Stephen.

Commissioner Germann has remained actively involved and vocal while advocating for many residents who requested action at this dangerous intersection. The installation of this traffic light will help enhance

transportation safety. County officials say they echo TxDOT’s message that drivers use caution near this traffic light as they adjust to its activation.

A more official celebration of the much-anticipated traffic signal is expected next week.

SEDC earns another prestigious feather in its cap

(Seguin) – Of the more than 700 economic development corporations in the state of Texas, Seguin’s own EDC has been named one of 72 recently recognized by the Texas Economic Development Council (TEDC).

The TEDC recognized the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) as a recipient of its annual Economic Excellence Recognition program for 2024.

The Economic Excellence Recognition program provides recognition to economic development organizations that meet a desired threshold of professionalism.

SED executive director Josh Schenuker says it’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by the statewide professional association for economic development organizations and professions here in Texas.

“Economic Development is a team sport, and the SEDC prides itself on the relationships that we have formed with our existing businesses and other economic development stakeholders. The growth and success that Seguin has sustained over the past several years is a testament to this

team first approach,” said Schneuker. “It’s an honor to receive state-level recognition from the TEDC for the work that we are doing together here in Seguin.

The SEDC, our existing

businesses, and other economic development stakeholders stand ready to continue our work together and help Seguin grow and prosper into the future.”

Recipients qualify for recognition based on training taken by their governing board/council as well as the economic development director and professional staff. Certifications, professional memberships and activities, and organizational effectiveness of the economic development staff also contributes to the standards for

qualification.

“The TEDC’s Economic Excellence Recognition program is one of the ways in which our organization honors the outstanding commitment to excellence of our communities and regions, their leaders, and their economic development professionals have toward the professionalization of their economic development efforts,” noted Carlton Schwab, President/ CEO of the TEDC.”

The Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) was established in 1994 to create, attract, retain, and expand economic opportunities for Seguin businesses and its residents. The SEDC takes a holistic approach to economic development by continuously evaluating what Seguin needs to grow and be successful. The SEDC is involved in all aspects of economic development, including business recruitment, business retention, small business development, and workforce development.

The awards were presented on Friday, February 28th, during the TEDC’s 2025 Winter Conference in Austin, Texas.

continued.

Wertman says overtime, it was the popularity of those canning jars used in the selling of her jelly that helped originate the idea for a full fledged festival surrounding pickles.

“I actually am the Jelly Girl. I started out as jelly, and everybody sees those Mason jars and they are like I want pickles. So, I made pickles with my grandma growing up and I thought well for sure, I can introduce the pickle and so, we created our first pickle called the Crazy pickle. It’s a sweet dill pickle combined and then, we also created the Money Pickle. After starting the pickle festival, I tried so many pickles, and I wanted the perfect pickle, and we found it and it was right on the money and it’s called the Money Pickle. It’s a super crunchy deli style kosher dill pickle,” said Wertman.

With a vision to host the festival outside of Kingwood, Wertman says she loved the Hill Country area and its ability to host an even larger event.

She says this new space in New Braunfels not only gives rise to the popularity of pickles but again allows them to offer more.

“So, we actually have around 50 vendors who just sell pickles alone. We have around 220 vendors all together. We have been able to incorporate a couple of exciting new things that we haven’t had at Kingwood. We have a live chainsaw – the carving of pickles and we also have an influencer, The Pickle Guy, is going to come out and

Movies, continued.

“All you basically have to do is show up. Bring your chairs, blankets, snacks and just join us under the big pavilion. We will have some food trucks there. So, if you don’t want to bring your snacks and you want to eat there, we are going to have Easy’s Snacks and K&J Roasted Corn there before the show and just come out and enjoy the night with us. Enjoy the movie and we can’t wait to see everybody there,” said Sourdellia.

This Friday’s movie will be shown at the large pavilion. Again, pre-show fun begins at 5:45 p.m. followed by the movie at 7:45 p.m. The remaining Movies in the Park schedule includes April 11 at Park West and June 13 at Park West. Blankets and chairs are encouraged.

do meet and greet and he is going to be our canning judge as well. So, those are a couple of extra things that we were able to fit in there that we are not able to have in Kingwood,” said Wertman.

And more pickle fun is exactly what Wertman is preparing for with a fun filled schedule starting off bright and early Saturday.

“We kickoff the festival with a 5K through Athlete Guild. They are putting together 5K. People can go to their website to register. There is last minute registration and then we have the Pickle Pet Parade at 12 o’clock and then we have the meet and greet with the Pickle Guy from 12 to 12:30. We have the kids coloring contest which is free to enter at 12:20 p.m. We have the home canning and pickling contest which starts at 1:20. All entries must be received by 12:20 at the information desk. We do have a kids’ pickle eating contest sponsored by Ricos. That starts at 1:40. We have

the kids pickle juice drinking contest at 2 o’clock. That is a free contest for them to enter,” said Wertman.

Unfortunately, Wertman says there are no more spots for adults looking to enter the pickle eating or pickle juice contests. Crowds, however, are still needed to cheer them on at 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.

Wertman says that same afternoon will continue with live music featuring the band the Bluebonnet Bastards plus more pickle sampling and other live entertainment available throughout the grounds.

Tickets are $15 a person. Two kids ages 12 and under are free per adult ticket purchased. While tickets can be purchased at the gate, Wertman encourages folks to get them online as this is expected to be a sold-out event. Tickets can be purchased online at Eventbrite.com. The Comal County Fairgrounds is located at 701 Common St.

Mats and Lady Mats batter Bears at Legends Ballpark

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Matadors held off San Antonio Edison 10-8 on Wednesday morning in their district home opener at Matador Legends Ballpark.

The Matadors scored all 10 of their runs in the first two innings. Matthew Marek doubled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Corey Dailey laced a two-RBI triple to the gap in right on a two-strike count in the first. And Ethan Tipple drove in three runs with base hits in each inning.

The Golden Bears would respond and claw their way back into the game with seven runs over the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fifth, Seguin coach Mike Gonzales brought Dailey on to pitch to get the final out and end an Edison threat. Dailey would come through with the strikeout and would finish the game, pitching two and a third scoreless innings.

“Mr. Do-It-All! He’ll go score 30 on Tuesday, come shut the door on Wednesday and go throw some touchdowns on Friday,” Gonzales said about the multi-sport star Dailey. “It’s good to have that. We have guys that are gonna come in and throw strikes.

“Some of our guys didn’t do a very good job of that today, but that’s alright. The way we are, the way we compete, we know they’re gonna come back to work. And they’re gonna do what they gotta do to make sure the next time they’re on the bump they’re gonna fill it up more.”

The Mats, 2-0 in District 27-5A, have off until next Tuesday when they travel to San Antonio Burbank.

(Seguin) -- Over at the softball field at Legends Ballpark, the Seguin Lady Matadors earned their fourth run-rule district victory in four games, drubbing the Edison Lady Bears 17-1 in three innings.

“She did an amazing job,” Said Seguin coach John Garcia about Weiding. “That’s just what we need from the leadoff (hitter).

“We’re going into Spring Break and take some time off, relax, recharge our batteries and we’re coming back on Monday and getting after it again.”

The Lady Mats also have off until Tuesday when they play Burbank. That game will take place Tuesday night at the SA ISD Sports Complex.

The Lady Mats batted around three times and scored all 17 of their runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Texas Lutheran commit Camryn

She was always surrounded by laughter and is now surrounded with her husband and all of those who preceded her in death.

When she was around 95, she heard on TV that some woman drank a shot of whiskey every day and that is why she had lived so long. So, she decided to try it. Mind you, this coming from a woman who never drank whiskey and never drank much alcohol in her life except an occasional beer or wine. So, her doctor gave the nursing home a prescription to have a daily shot. This became the joke of the nursing home about her and her whiskey. Mind you, it was a good thing, and she did not really like how whiskey tasted, but she always said it was good for her pain. What pain? She only talked about pain when she talked about whiskey!
