Locals schools shut down in response to COVID-19
GRMC lays out preparedness plan to defend community from suspected COVID-19
Matador Curbside Lunch service to be provided for students

He says four campuses will serve as those sites.
(Seguin) -- Today is the start of an extended Spring Break for local students. As reported all weekend long, the Seguin, Navarro and Marion ISDs have all cancelled classes this week in response to the COVID19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. All districts including Southwest Preparatory School, Lifegate Christian School and St. James Catholic School, will be closed March 16-20, 2020. All school events will also be cancelled during this time. Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez says the decision was based entirely on the safety of students and staff. "The decision to temporarily close schools is not an easy one, and the closure impacts our entire community," said Gutierrez.
This week's cancellation of classes also means the cancellation of all extracurricular activities including competitions and practices. Now to ensure the well being of all children as they remain away from
campuses, Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says the district is making sure that their kids eat. He says breakfast and lunch meals will be offered to all Seguin ISD students regardless of eligibility during the school closure.
"The way that it is going to work in order to minimize exposure between staff and students is that the meals will be in a food truck and families can come and pick up the meal from the parking lot of those campuses and go. I was able to clarify -- we do have the labor that will allow us to provide meals to any of our students not just those who are on the free and reduced lunch programs so again, we will have those meals available at least until the food runs out for any of our students who are interested in visiting one of those four campuses," said Hoffmann. Meals can be picked up in the parking lots of Koennecke, McQueeney and Rodriguez Elementary Schools and Seguin High School. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. followed by lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. See CLOSED, page 2

Matadors, Panthers, Bulldogs sidelined by UIL due to COVID-19 (Guadalupe County) - The athletic programs at Seguin, Navarro, and Marion High School have joined the growing list of local entities affected by COVID-19, or the Coronavirus. The University Interscollastic League (UIL), the governing body of public high school athletics in Texas, is suspending all UIL sanctioned contests due to the outbreak of COVID-19, beginning March 16 and effective through March 29. That means no soccer, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, or track-and-field competition for any of the area's high school teams and student-athletes for at least the next two weeks. Practices may be held at the discretion of each school district. The UIL released the following statement on Friday: "To support the health and safety of our students and communities, the University
Interscholastic League (UIL) is suspending all UIL sanctioned contests due to the outbreak of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in Texas. Effective March 16, all UIL interscholastic competition is suspended through March 29." “We are urging our member schools and their communities to stay vigilant and take every possible precaution to remain safe and healthy,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “We understand there is a lot of uncertainty during this unprecedented time. Please know UIL leadership is working diligently to adjust to this rapidly evolving situation and will share updates as soon as possible.” "As this is a fluid situation, the UIL will continue to follow the direction of state and local officials to monitor this situation and will make additional announcements as needed. Please continue to check the UIL website and social media accounts for further updates."

NCAA Winter/Spring Championships canceled
TLU Athletics seasons suspended indefinitely starting March 16
(Seguin) - The NCAA Division III Winter and Spring Championships have been canceled, and Texas Lutheran Athletics seasons in the sports of men's indoor track & field, softball, baseball, men's and women's outdoor track & field, men's and women's golf, and men's and women's tennis are indefinitely suspended effective Monday, March 16.
On Thursday evening TLU's conference, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), made the
decision to indefinitely suspend all regular season conference and nonconference competition effective Monday. The NCAA released this statement Thursday afternoon:
on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."
"Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based
TLU announced on Thursday that its spring break was extended by a week so that students would be out of class from March 16 to March 27. From March 30 to April 8, students will attend classes online. Prior to April 8, TLU will assess
the COVID-19 situation and determine if TLU continues with online classes or if students can return to campus. TLU is the defending NCAA Division III national champion in softball. TLU was set to host the SCAC Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships on April 24-25 at Bulldog Stadium. Navarro softball survives slugfest, move to 4-0 in district play (Geronimo) - In their final softball game for at least two weeks, the Navarro Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and turned a gameclinching double play in the top of the seventh to emerge from an offensive fireworks show with a 1412 district win over Gonzales on Friday in Geronimo. The Panthers and Apaches combined for a staggering 40 hits on the night - 20 by each team. Navarro trailed the back-and-forth affair 12-11 in the middle of the sixth inning before rallying in the bottom of the frame. Sarah Howard and Berklee Andrews walked to start off the frame, and Sydni Stevens singled in Howard
for the tying run. Carli Pitner drove in Stevens for the go-ahead run, and Melina Tabares laced an RBIsingle to push Pitner's courtesy runner Tatum Harborth home to give the Panthers a two-run cushion. Gonzales used a walk and two singles to load the bases with nobody out and place the potential winning run on base in the bottom of the seventh, but Navarro pitcher Samantha Wegman received some help from her defense to survive the frame with no scoreboard damage and preserve the win. Wegman and third baseman Haleigh Ortiz picked off the runner at third for the first out. Wegman induced a grounder to Howard at second base that resulted in
a game-ending double play. Howard and Stevens each collecxted three hits, three RBIs, and two stolen bases, and Howard scored three times. Tabares and Ortiz each drove in two. Ortiz finished 3-4 with two doubles. Lalyn Sturm recorded two hits, scored three runs, and stole two bases. Wegman went 4-5 with an RBI. The Panthers are 4-0 in district play, 8-6-1 overall. Navarro's next game is up in the air for the time being, as the UIL has suspended all spring competition through at least March 29 due to the Covid-19 virus.
