Guadalupe County names
Distinguished Young Women
(Seguin) — Guadalupe County has a new Distinguished Young Woman. The contest in this area for years has been better known as Junior Miss. Earning the 2023 title during this year’s scholarship contest was Taelor Jo Krueger, a junior at Seguin High School. Krueger captured the title this past Sunday during the annual competition held at the Stephen and Mary Birch Texas Theatre.
Krueger, the daughter of Christina Krueger and Henry Krueger, also won the Scholastic Achievement preliminary award. In total, Krueger received an $8,000 scholarship to attend Texas Lutheran University as well as $1,450 in cash scholarships.
Krueger says she still can’t get over the excitement of winning this year’s title.
“So, my immediate reaction is I was not expecting to actually win. I was only able to go to
one of the practices just due to the fact that I work a lot, so I barely knew anything. So, my immediate reaction, I was super happy. I was super surprised. It was awesome to have been selected out of all those amazing girls. They all did so good, so it was just a reaction of surprise and excitement,” said Krueger.
Krueger says she especially thanks the support that she has been shown. She says the win was no doubt a team effort.
“I would like to thank my family, my mother Christina Krueger as well as my grandparents Debbie and James Glenewinkel and then also a great shoutout to my sponsor which was Al Alves Insurance Company. They were a lot of help. I just want to encourage other young girls to join the program for the opportunity and everything that comes with it,” said Krueger. Women, pg. 3

GRMC recognized nationally for patient experience
(Seguin) -- Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) announced today that it has been recognized as a 2023 Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ recipient. This distinction places Guadalupe Regional Medical Center among the top 15 percent of hospitals nationwide for patient experience, according to Healthgrades, the leading marketplace that connects people with the right doctor and hospital.
“Receiving this national recognition from Healthgrades confirms our testament to the high standard of care provided to patients every day by the staff at GRMC and to our dedication in providing highquality, safe care to every life we are privileged to touch”, said Guadalupe Regional Medical Center CEO Robert G. Haynes.
For this annual analysis, Healthgrades evaluated 3,138 hospitals that submitted at least 100 patient experience surveys to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), covering
admissions from January 2021 through December 2021. Of those hospitals evaluated, 419 hospitals outperformed their peers—based on their patients’ responses—to achieve this award.
Healthgrades evaluates performance by applying a scoring methodology to ten patient experience measures, using data collected from HCAHPS survey of the hospital’s own patients. Survey questions focus on patients’ perspectives of their care in the hospital, from cleanliness and noise levels in patient rooms
to medication explanations and hospital staff responsiveness to patients’ needs. The measures also include whether a patient would recommend the hospital to friends or family and their overall rating of the hospital.
“We applaud all recipients of the Healthgrades 2023 Outstanding Patient Experience Award for putting patient experience front and center within their organizations,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “We commend these hospitals for their ongoing commitment to prioritizing an exceptional patient experience, while ensuring the health and safety of their patients.”
Consumers can visit healthgrades.com for more information on how Healthgrades measures hospital quality and access the complete methodology here. An easy-to-understand overview of Healthgrades’ complete patient experience methodology is also available here.
Women, continued.
First runner-up in the contest was Brianna Allen, daughter of Gordon and Jennifer Allen. Also, a Seguin High School junior, Allen was the overall Fitness winner. Allen was sponsored by Nancy Seidenberger.
She received a $6,000 scholarship to attend Texas Lutheran University and $1,200 in cash scholarships.
Sofia Atrain was the second runner-up and daughter of Oliker and Katie Atrian. She was sponsored by Los Cucos Mexican Cafe. A junior at Seguin High, she was the overall Self Expression winner. Atrain earned a $4,000 scholarship to Texas Lutheran and $950 in cash scholarships from local patrons.
This year’s overall talent winner was Isabella Guerra, daughter of Joe Richard and Linda Guerra. Guerra performed a Mariachi song for her talent portion of the contest. She attends Seguin High and was sponsored by The Koehler Company. She also was awarded that night with a $200 cash scholarship. The Spirit of Junior Miss award voted on by the contestants themselves went to Kaylee Baker, daughter of Crystal Riojas and Dalton James Baker. Baker received a $200 cash scholarship and was sponsored by Mark Herbold State Farm.
Each winner received plaques and flowers from
Viola’s and Dietz Flower Shops.
A total of 10 participants took part in this year’s scholarship contest. Krueger says she encourages even more incoming high school juniors to sign up for next year.
“I would definitely tell them to consider it. It’s a great program because you are able to learn a lot through it. Honestly Ms. (Toni) Winters has been a great help. She kind of teaches us how to be a proper woman in a way -- to represent yourself in a positive outlook for everything good that you do. So, I would definitely say for other girls joining it, join it to express yourself and show what a great young woman you are in today’s society,” said Krueger.
This marked the 58th year that Junior Miss/ Distinguished Young Woman have recognized the talents of area high school young women. For this, Winters, the program chairman, thanked the community for its continued sponsorship of this “outstanding program.” During this year’s program, Steve Tschoepe, another longtime coordinator of the program, was also applauded for his 36 years of involvement with the program.
Krueger now advances to the state competition to be held later this year in Houston.
(Chicago, IL) -- Lonzo Ball is undergoing yet another surgery on his left knee. The Bulls announced the point guard will have a third knee procedure and ESPN reports he could potentially miss all of the 2023-24 season. Ball hasn’t played in an NBA game since January 14th, 2022 and has had two surgeries to address what originally was a small meniscus tear and bone bruise. Despite extensive rehab, the 25-yearold had been unable to run, cut or jump without pain. Ball will undergo a cartilage transplant in his left knee and will be out indefinitely.

Study Shows Sharp Increase In Child Mortality
(Washington, DC) -- A new study shows the mortality rate for children and teens spiked in 2020 and 2021. The study published this week in Journal of the American Medical Association said the increase was driven by deaths from homicide, accidental drug overdoses, car accidents and suicide among those ages 10 to 19. Researchers found the mortality rate of Americans ages one to 19 increased by 11-percent between 2019 and 2020 and an additional eight-percent between 2020 and 2021. It’s the largest increase in 50 years.
Govs Call On Major Pharmacies to Clarify Position Abortion Medication Access
(Undated) -- More than a dozen governors are calling on major pharmacies to clarify how they plan to protect access to abortion drugs like Mifepristone. Members of the Reproductive Freedom Alliance took that action after Walgreens recently announced it would stop distributing medication for abortions in some states. The letter was sent to executives at CVS, Walmart, Rite-Aid, Safeway, Health Mart, Kroger, Costco, and Target. Democratic Governors who signed on to the letter include California’s Gavin Newsom, Illinois’ JB Pritzker and Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer. Their letter also comes as the first hearing in a big case in Texas involving mifepristone.
South Carolina GOP Lawmakers Consider Death Penalty For Abortions
(Columbia, SC) -- Republican lawmakers in South Carolina are considering a bill that would make a woman or girl who has an abortion eligible for the death penalty. The bill would change the state’s criminal code and redefine “person” to include an egg fertilized at the point of conception. It describes an aborted fetus as “an unborn child who is a victim of homicide” and given equal protection under the state’s homicide laws. That includes the death penalty. Twenty-one South Carolina House Republicans supported the bill when it was introduced in January but some have asked to have their names removed from it since then.
CA Bill Would ID Trans Students To Parents
(Sacramento, CA) -- A new California bill would mandate teachers, counselors and other school employees to notify parents if a student identifies as publicly transgender. It would make school employees, within three days, responsible for notifying parents if they learn that a student is publicly identifying as transgender. The notification would be triggered if the student participates in gender-segregated sports or opts to use bathroom facilities for a gender other than the one appearing on their birth certificate. Trans advocates call it part of “culture war attacks.” But the Republican bill’s author argues this is a way for parents to get involved in their child’s well-being.
