Schools to extend closure into April
In a letter to parents Tuesday afternoon, Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez says he realizes that this extended closure places stress and hardship on their students, staff and families. However, he says this extended closure is necessary in the district's continued vigilance to minimize the spread and exposure of COVID19. To help keep students engaged in the educational process during this timeframe,

Seguin ISD encourages families, staff to respond to travel survey By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD says it's doing all that it can to address its future during these next few weeks. In doing so, Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez on Monday afternoon, shared information about an online survey that he announced in a letter to the community. He says that survey, which was created and implemented by his administration team, has already shed plenty of good information specific to the district.
"We are surveying our families and our staff and that survey went out late (Monday) afternoon and as of just a few minutes ago (Monday night), we've already received over 220 responses. We also have to keep in mind that we have families and staff members who Gutierrez says the district will help facilitate have traveled to over 20 states and over seven online educational opportunities for students. different countries so on top of conversations He says Seguin High School students who do not have a device at home for online learning can pick up a Chromebook this Thursday, March 19 from 4 to 7 p.m. or Friday, March 20 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
that are happening with local and state agencies, we are also looking at data that is coming from the individuals that we serve and we have to really look closely at everything that comes our way in order to make a decision," said Gutierrez. The survey is for those who have traveled outside a 150-mile radius from Seguin since March 6. The numbers he mentioned are obviously much higher today as those survey results continue to come in. Again, the Seguin ISD is still asking that staff and students self-report or respond to the survey that's now available on the district's website. He says all this data unique to the Seguin ISD will continue to be collected as the district looks beyond the April 6 date. The district on Tuesday announced that it would be extending its closure into April.

Other than the food service employees and custodians, all other employees are being restricted from the campus. Dr. Gutierrez says they are seriously considering each reopening or closure plan that is available to them. Dr. Gutierrez says with 7,500 students and more than 1,000 employees, every possibility is being considered. He says they want to be proactive, while still staying on top of the message of social distancing -- an attempt to help slow down the spread of the virus.

Seguin ISD adds schools Seguin, Navarro plus Marion to meal curbside service ISD among the schools to Dr. Gutierrez says assistance is also available for those families who feel they need a little more help than just the daily meals.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Two more schools have been added to the list of Seguin ISD campuses serving as host sites for breakfast and lunch meals. With schools extending their closure, Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez says the nutrition department has also expanded the locations for kids to get a free meal each weekday. "We added two more sites -- Jefferson Elementary School and Ball Early Childhood where we would be providing meals for both breakfast and lunch. We really want to encourage our parents and guardians to consider coming to one of our sites for meals. I know that there is unexpected circumstances and now having to ensure that we are taking care of our children at home and one of the things that we can do to ease that burden is to provide meals but also for our families who are in need to provide meals both breakfast and lunch. So, I want to encourage our community to consider that. I also want to add that your students do not have to be with you in the vehicle so we feel that that is important for everyone to know," said Gutierrez.
"In addition, we also have what we call backpack foods and if you go through the line and express that you would like a backpack meal or two or three that we are also offering that for families that need dinner or weekend food. We are really trying to do everything we can to support our community during this crisis and it's our hope that this passes soon but there are no guarantees and so until things change, we are going to continue to put into place efforts to support our students in ensuring they have access to food," said Gutierrez. In addition to Jefferson and Ball, meals can also be picked up in the parking lots of Koennecke, McQueeney and Rodriguez Elementary Schools plus Seguin High School. The curb site pick up will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. for breakfast followed by lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Like Seguin, Navarro ISD will also continue to offer up curbside meals. The free curbside meals will be served each day this week at the Navarro Intermediate Cafeteria. Meals will be distributed on the west side of the cafeteria. The to go meals will be available from 11 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. each day. Each meal will include lunch and a next day breakfast. Navarro ISD will issue meals to any Navarro student that is 18 years and younger. Adults that are accompanying children must have their child present in order to receive a meal.

Why you should care about the coronavirus, despite your gut telling you it's all an overreaction By Darren Dunn, general manager of KWED Radio/Seguin Daily News (Seguin) -- I want to be careful. I don't want to use a tone that sounds like I'm talking down to people. I'm not, but I want to be honest about what we are saying to people as part of our coverage of the coronavirus. There are real health and economic crises being generated by COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus that's spreading around the globe. These are real problems. By the way, these are our problems -- yours and mine. This is why you are seeing such huge responses at the global, federal, state and local levels. Let's be honest. Early on, this felt like no big deal to many of us, because it was largely covered that way. It was first covered widely as a political issue. Trump is bad. Trump is good -- Obama was bad. Meanwhile, the science community kept sounding the same alarms over and over again. They said "this is not only a China problem, this is a pandemic in the making, we need to be prepared, we need testing, we need to mitigate the spread any way we can, we need to be prepared to take some bold steps, we don't have the capacity at hospitals or clinics any level to handle a huge spike in cases, and the death toll will rise rapidly if we do nothing." We unfortunately, missed the window to do widespread testing and isolation of sick patients as a way to start to minimize the spread, so the best way to curb the spread of the virus now is to keep people away from each other, while testing efforts continue to ramp up. Think about how the federal response has progressed, particularly over the last few weeks. First, it was no big deal for Americans, then it was let's cancel a few
presidential rallies, then it moved to social distancing, next it was no groups of 50 or more. On Monday, the president said gatherings should be limited to only 10 people and added that this issue could carry over into late summer or early fall. This isn't a made-for-TV drama that was cooked up by libtards, kooks, globalists, Never-Trumpers, Tucker Carlson or Nancy Pelosi. It's a real situation, but I want to stress it doesn't mean it's a time for panic. You do not need to panic. The scientific data doesn't suggest that we panic. It does, however, say that significant mitigation efforts need to continue. This is not a time for skeptical leadership. The president has now made it clear. This is not a joke, despite all the stuff you have read online or have watched on TV several weeks ago. Please, catch up! Before I say more, I want to address the coronavirus comparisons that are still being made to H1N1, to the regular seasonal flu, to the Spanish Flu, to the bubonic plague, or to seasonal allergies. First, we don't know how this story ends, so telling me how many people are killed by the flu each year is pointless. It's also why we keep telling people to get a flu shot. By the way, those flu deaths could be greatly reduced if more of us got the flu shot. Of course too many of us don't, because our favorite uncle told us that he got a flu shot once, and it gave him a raging case of the flu. But again, I digress. Second, what's your point about the other diseases and their death tolls? How high does it need to be, before you think the scientists are right? Are you willing to bet on the lives of 20 percent of the population that your very unscientific
hunch is right? Some are saying by their words and actions that "it's not that bad." Really!? So, we wait until it gets worse? We are nearing a tipping point. That's not what I'm saying. That's what the scientists are saying. The said it again just one day ago. The reason for the dramatic responses over the last week to 10 days was the release of the CDC models on coronavirus (COVID-19) deaths. The data, produced by the models, confirmed that this wasn't just something to talk about, it was something that required an immediate response. Think about the president's tone initially, and think about how he sounds now. That's not just because the stock market is suffering. Stuff just got real. It got real for most of those in power, because everything has changed, and changed in a way that if we don't take these dramatic steps now, we might be facing this crisis well into next year, instead of just for a few months or so. Keeping the virus cases from spiking is not just addressing the public health concerns, but also it's designed to provide long term assistance to our economy. I know everything these days seems to be filtered through a hyper-partisan prisms. That's part of the challenge we are facing now. I will say that if there's a blame to be placed on some members of the national press, it's that they spent too much time talking early on talking about things they thought President Trump should have said differently. They, instead, should have focused only on what the science folks were saying, because their message hasn't changed very much. But they couldn't resist a good story based on the president's Twitter feed. They got caught covering the
politics, and that wasn't the real story. If you consumed those stories and all of the analysis that went along with them early on, then you might have reached a conclusion that it has nothing to do with the reality of the coronavirus situation today. Again, I say -- it's time for you to catch up. Newt Gringrich, the former Speaker of the House, wrote a piece recently that detailed his first hand experience watching the COVID19 outbreak in Italy. He shares why Americans have to take this seriously, and that these steps are not an "overreaction." We don't need to overreact, and you don't need to hoard toliet paper, bleach products or masks. So what should you do. Heed the advice of the scientific community, avoid crowds if you can, practice good hygiene, and remember that this too shall pass -- eventually. By the way, if you are one of the hoarders out there, please share some of those sanitizing products with doctors and clinics in your area. We need to make sure we are helping to take care of the people who need to take care of the sick as the virus numbers grow. Hopefully, we can prevent a spike in cases, but again this is about being prepared. If this all scares you and makes you feel uncomfortable, take a take a very deep breath and then exhale. Do that three times, and then reconsider what we are all being asked to do and why. Is it a deep state conspiracy? Is it fake news? Is the data all made up? It's none of those things. Folks, this is a test of our faith in our God and/or science, and a test of our humanity. Do what you can to help reduce the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, be well and stay well.

Texas Lutheran's Tyler Post named SCAC Hitter of the Week (Seguin) - Tyler Post, a freshman first baseman/designated hitter from San Antonio, Texas, has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for games played from Monday, March 9 through Sunday, March 15.
Senior outfielder Rafe Chaumette of Trinity finished off his season with two multi-hit games, leading fifth-ranked Trinity to a 3-0 record last week. The senior went 6-for-9 (.667) with three doubles and five runs scored in his two games played. He went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three runs scored in Monday's win over New Jersey City, then went 2-for-4 with two runs scored to close out his season. He also stole three bases in the two games.
Post homered twice, reached base four times, and drove in three as the Bulldogs defeated DeSales (Pa.) 16-3 on Tuesday. Post hit a solo home run in the middle of TLU's three consecutive home runs in the second inning and then belted a two-run in the sixth to slug 4.000 on the day. He also had a pair of walks and two runs scored. With Tuesday's perfect effort, Post raised his average to .385 and his RBI total to 13 in 12 games played. TLU has had three of the six award winners for SCAC Baseball Hitter of the Week in 2020. Alex Cornman was the Week 2 winner, and Tyler Cauley was the Week 5 winner.
