Seguin’s Chapter of Habitat builds its fastest home ever

(Seguin) – Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity is celebrating its fastest build ever. Two months is all that it took to build a home for Annette Montanez and her two daughters. For Annette, getting her family into the home that she prayed for has been incredible.

She says it was ever since that initial call when they told her that she had been selected that she realized God was in charge.

“How good God was, how amazing God is, how amazing that no matter what happens, he’s faithful and don’t give up because he is not a liar and just keep hope in that. He just gets all the glory. When I got the call, I just said, ‘God, you always surprise me.’ God always surprises me every time he has worked miracle after miracle after miracle and this one right here,

topped it off because he is a detailed guy and I was very detailed and very specific when I prayed for a home and every detail that I prayed for is in this home all the way from the color to the amount of space. It’s crazy. It’s crazy,” said Montanez.

Montanez recently joined members of the local chapter of Habitat as they dedicated her new home at 957 Allende Street.

During the ceremony, Habitat volunteers say they couldn’t help but notice Montanez’s faith throughout this home building journey. They say most times, it was Montanez who kept inspiring them.

The respect, however, was mutual. Montanez says Habitat volunteers dedicate hours of their own personal time to ensure the futures of others.

830-379-7352 (Seguin) – A group of out of state high schoolers spent their Spring Break putting the finishing touches on the latest house to be built by Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity. The group of young ladies, from The Ethel Walker School in Connecticut, wrapped up their visit to Texas with the dedication of the Montanez House located in the 900 block of Allende St.

The annual trip to assist the Seguin Habitat chapter is part of the Connecticut for Collegiate Challenge.

Recognizing the girls for their hard work this past week was Madeline Zwicke Dalman, the executive director of the non-profit Habitat organization.

“They’ve actually been coming out to build with Habitat in Texas

for the last decade and so, they are back in Seguin for the third time, and they give up their Spring Break instead of going on vacation or going to the beach, they come to do service work and to serve other communities outside of their own. These girls they are high school age, and they are an all-girl school and so they work really hard. They always surprise everyone. They are some of our hardest working volunteers and we are just so thankful to have them come back here year after year. This house actually finished a week early because of their help with them coming out every day. We were able to finish a week early and they knocked out all of the landscaping, all of the punch list items, touch up paint – they did the final clean inside the house, they finished putting up the fence,

planted trees, finished the shed in the back and so they’ve been working really hard this week,” said Dalman.

Excited to have come back and actually see a completed build was Alexia Grech, one of the high school volunteers. She says the experience has once again been amazing.

“This is my second year on the Habitat trip with my school. I’m at Ethel Walker. It’s a ton of fun. We come down here every year for about a week and we do four days on the job site, so we work with the core group and we learn all different things. Last year, we worked a lot on walls. This year was the first time that we were able to work with one house and see it through. It was awesome to be able to meet the homeowner and work

Stolen vehicle leads to high speed chase

(Seguin) – Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Investigators continue to search for an occupant of a vehicle who fled on foot following a bail out in the 2600 block of Darst Field Road.

Officials say the incident first began at 10:50 a.m. Friday, March 17 when the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a stolen silver Hyundai Sonata heading eastbound on IH 10 near the 600 mile marker. A few minutes later, they say

Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office Deputies located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. That’s when the driver fled and a pursuit ensued. The two occupants then bailed out and fled on foot. The driver was immediately apprehended by sheriff’s deputies. Deputies are still searching for the other occupant, described as a white male dressed in all black. Anyone with information on the suspect or incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 830-379-1224.

“Habitat is a program that I didn’t know too much about but when I started becoming a part of it like coming to the actual home and putting my sweat and using my hands and learning how to build a home – not only that -- just the core volunteers – they want you to know how to build your home They spend their time, their hours, they spend their every Saturday, every Thursday faithfully here with their hands and their sweat to build me a home and just to meet a goal for you and your family so that you can have a place to call home and when you have your hands a part of it – watching it and seeing how it goes up, there’s just no other feeling like it. Being a part of building your own home, I don’t even know what words to use. I just have so much gratitude for this program. I do and I’m glad that they make you a part of building your home,” said Montanez.

Montanez is looking forward to sharing the home with her two daughters, Zamari, 10 and Elani, 4. She says after living in a small apartment or having to share a home, her family finally has a place to call home.

“For my daughters to be able to have their own rooms and for them to be able to have a backyard to run into – not to have to share a restroom with me because I take forever (laughs), to just be able to be them, to be able to write on their wall if they want to – not that we will do that but just to build traditions and if I want to host something for my church with my girls because I’m a youth leader and I love to have my girls around me and to be able to invite them into my home so they can have a safe place as well because not only am I a real mother to my daughters, I’m a spiritual mother to a lot of young girls and to be able to invite them into my own home, it’s going to be awesome,” said Montanez.

Amazed but not shocked by the two-month feat is Executive Director Madeline Zwicke Dalman.

“I don’t know if we were really trying to beat a record. I think our last home took us like three or four months, but we did a nine-week build schedule this go around,” said Dalman.

Dalman says building a brand-new home in 60 days just clearly spells out one thing.

“It just means that we can build more this year. We are going to build four houses this year in Seguin and so we are planning on starting our next home actually on April 1. So, we are going to build the walls for it next weekend, March 25th and then we will raise the walls on April 1 so we can just jump right into the next one. We are able to keep chugging along. In the past, we’ve struggled with finding available lots in Seguin. We have a lot that is ready to go. We’ve been working closely with the city of Seguin to get permitting done and so, we have our next partner family over here. So, she’s ready to go and has been doing sweat equity hours and so we will be able to start right away on the next one,” said Dalman.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing organization that provides affordable homes for local families. The homes are sold to them through nointerest loans. The program defines itself as “A Hand Up Not a Hand Out.”

with the homeowner. We really didn’t have that experience last year so that made it a lot more special and personal. This year, we also got a special experience to see a lot more come together. A lot of us agreed, we saw the house become a home. For a lot of us, that was super special – just seeing everything come together. We laid all this sod yesterday which was gorgeous afterwards. So, it’s a crazy transformation. Just watching it all happen is amazing. It’s so much fun,” said Grech.

Grech says while some opt for the beach or time on the couch, this local trip to Texas, for her, has always been fulfilling.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to come down here -- A, to get immersed in the culture of Texas just to see all the beautiful things that we saw. We did a little sight seeing which was super fun. But hearing all the girls in past years talk about their experience with Habitat, I knew it was something that I had to be a part of. They would come back with such amazing stories about the people that they met, the people they worked with and some of the lessons that they learned – a lot of valuable lessons about working hard and learning new things, trying new things, resilience. So, I had to try it out and see what it was all about because I wanted to see every part of it and I got that experience that I was looking for,” said Grech.

While most of their time in Seguin was spent building a home, all other times were spent sightseeing and experiencing the area.

School leaders say plans for the next time have already officially begun.

Wyoming Becomes First State To Ban Abortion Pills

(Cheyenne, WY) -- Wyoming is set to become the first U.S. state to ban abortion bills. The bill signed Friday by Republican Governor Mark Gordon outlaws the prescription, distribution, sale or use of “any drug for the purpose of procuring or performing an abortion on any person.” The measure, which takes effect on July 1st, makes exceptions for rape, incest, or if the mother’s life is in danger. This comes as a federal judge in Texas considers ordering a nationwide ban on an abortion pill previously approved by the FDA.

Elizabeth Holmes Owes Over 25-Million To Creditors

(Santa Clara, CA) -- The former CEO of the failed blood-testing company Theranos owes over 25-million-dollars to her creditors. Elizabeth Holmes appeared in court on Friday as she tries to delay her eleven-year prison sentence for wire fraud and conspiracy. A new lawsuit is being brought to light which reveals Holmes executed three promissory notes while she was CEO of Theranos, amounting to over 25-million dollars. While in court Holmes asked the judge to delay her prison report date by another month while she appeals the conviction.

‘Jurassic Park’s Sam Neill Treated For Stage Three Cancer

(Undated) -- The star of the ‘Jurassic Park’ films Sam Neill is opening up about his recent cancer diagnosis. In an interview about his upcoming memoir, Neill revealed he was diagnosed with stage three blood cancer last year. He says he first experienced symptoms during publicity for ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ last year, and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment since. While he is still receiving monthly medication for the disease, his agent says he is cancer-free and back at work. Neill is best known for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise, but has starred in a number of hits including “The Hunt For Red October” and “Bicentennial Man.”

ND Supreme Court Rules Abortion Ban Unconstitutional

(Bismarck, ND) -- The North Dakota Supreme Court has ruled the state’s abortion ban is unconstitutional. The decision keeps in place a lower court order that blocks enforcement of the state’s trigger law banning abortion while a legal challenge is ongoing. The trigger law makes it a felony to perform an abortion except in cases of rape, incest or to save the mother’s life. The Red River Women’s Clinic has argued the trigger law is unconstitutional because the state constitution provides the fundamental right to an abortion.

Wilhelm “Bill” Schade, age 81 of Seguin, Texas passed away on March 16, 2023. Bill was born on March 24, 1941, in Germany.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Helene (Schade) and Herman Ratz, and his sister Inge Philbrook and his brothersin-law Jim Wacker and Billy Joe Hageman. Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Constance “Connie” Korsmeyer Schade (they were married in Morton, Illinois); sons, Bob and (Wendy) Schade, Tim and (Andrea) Schade; grandchildren Courtney (Zachary) Smith, Caitlyn Schade, Caroline Schade, & Kinley Schade; sisters-in-law, Lil Wacker, Joyce (Richard) Dinel; numerous nephews, one niece, other loving family members and many friends.

Bill graduated from Lutheran West High School in Cleveland, Ohio in 1959. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University in 1964, and his Master of Education degree from Indiana University in 1969. Bill coached football in Portland, Oregon, Canton, Missouri, Alamosa, Colorado, and Fargo, North Dakota for 14 years prior to joining Connie’s parents in the grocery business in Pekin, Illinois. For the next 20 years Bill and Connie ran Mr. K’s Supermarkets. In 2002 Bill came out of retirement to coach football again at Texas Lutheran University. In retirement Bill loved woodworking and following his granddaughters in all their endeavors.

Visitation will begin on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin, Texas, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Daniel Cave officiating. Interment will follow immediately after in the Faith Lutheran Church Columbarium. A reception will follow in the Life Enrichment Center (LEC) at Faith Lutheran Church. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Mike Wacker, Steve Wacker, Tom Wacker, Eddie Dinel, Greg Borman, and Zachary Smith. .

Race to Raise 5K Run/Walk

The Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation will have its 10th Annual Race to Raise 5K Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 29 at Pecantown Books & Brews. Adult Pickleball League

There will be an Adult Pickleball League held from 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday from April 11 through May 16 at the Seguin-Saegert Pickleball Complex, located at 418 W. Mountain St. in Seguin. The league includes four weeks

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.
