Second case of

COVID-19

discovered in Guadalupe County By Darren Dunn

(Seguin) - Guadalupe County is reporting the second case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, in a county resident. The individual is experiencing mild symptoms and isolating at home. The Texas Department of State Health Services is supporting Guadalupe County in identifying any close contacts of the patient while sick, so they can be isolated and monitored for symptoms and quickly tested, if needed. At this time it is unknown how the patient came in contact with COVID-19, and this is still under investigation by the Department of State Health Services.

In light of the growing concern with COVID-19 spread and with the recent news of another local case, and a community transmission of the virus in the area -- the healthcare systems in the San Antonio area will begin a "no visitor" policy (with exceptions for special patient populations). The no visitor policy officially started on Sunday at GRMC. There are a few exceptions -- one visitor will be allowed only for childbirth, end of life, parent of pediatric patients, and goodbye visit of military personnel departing for deployment. GRMC officials say they know that social and emotional support are important aspects of patient care. They say they have a team of IT and counseling professionals working to arrange alternate methods of communicationto keep their patients linked to their families.

It is possible that individuals who visited the following locations at the dates and times listed may have been exposed: Monday, March 16th, 11am2pm at H-E-B store in Schertz. The risk of contracting the virus from these exposures is low,and isolation is not required for anyone that does not have symptoms. If you believe you have been exposed, monitor yourself closely for symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and shortness of breath for 14 days after the exposure. If you experience any of these symptoms and do not need urgent medical attention, isolate at home, and contact your healthcare provider. See SECOND CASE, page 2

Governor issues two new executive orders By Darren Dunn

SECOND CASE, continued from page 1 There are things everyone can do to help prevent the spread of COVID-19: - Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. - Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. sick.

- Avoid close contact with people who are - Stay home when you are sick.

- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then wash your hands.

- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. Minimizing exposure is especially important for people who are 65 or older or who have an underlying health condition like heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, high blood pressure,or cancer. People in those groups have a higher risk of developing severe disease if they do get COVID-19, and the safest thing for them during an outbreak will be to stay home as much as possible and minimize close contact with other people. To get ready, they should talk to their doctor about getting additional prescription medications and have enough household items and groceries on hand to stay home as needed. Christian Cupboard needs donations Food pantry helping to feed people during virus outbreak By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The Christian Cupboard is asking the community to help it keep people fed during this coronavirus outbreak. The local food pantry offers food to working families and others in need in the community. Christian Cupboard Executive Director Regina Lee people in some cases are

struggling to find the staples that they normally have at home. She says that's why the cupboard is leaning a little more on the public for personal donations that can be shared with others in the community. "People need to know that, if HEB doesn't have toliet paper, then I definitely don't have toliet paper. I'm a food pantry. I'm trying to feed you. Let it be known that if I can't order it and get it from the San Antonio Food Bank or if I can't order it and get it from HEB here in Seguin or Wal-Mart, then I'm not going to have it either. So I might be asking you to go through your can goods. And our hunters, who maybe had maybe had a deer or two, or a hog or two processed -- I'm going to be asking for that," said Lee. Lee says it's been made more difficult on some families, because schools are not in session. She says the school districts are offering free meals to their students, but she says the cupboard is also trying to step in to help bridge any gaps. "As of right now, I'm okay with milk and eggs. Right now our shelves are okay, but I'm going to probably need your cans of tuna, potted meat, spaghetti sauce -- those things, I might be reaching out for that at this point. As of today...I'm okay. I do know that the Seguin ISD has sites for breakfast and lunch, but think about the children who can't get to those breakfast and lunch

sites. However, their parents may come on their lunch time to the cupboard to have food to take home," said Lee. When the Christian Cupboard normally makes this kind of plea for help, it often asks for money, but Lee says things are different now. She says supplies are limited in stores and that's why it's so important for you to see what you might be able to share from your pantry at home. "Usually, I would ask for money, because it's lightweigtht. Money is not helping me right now. It's not really helping anybody (find certain things). So if you have a couple boxes of cereal that maybe you haven't opened. If you go to the dollar store or Dollar Tree or Wal-Mart and you see a couple boxes of cereal, (bring it to us). things down. I really would appreciate it. I really do. Everytime I have asked (for help), the community has come out in force. If you have a donation, give us a call between the hours of 9 to 11:30 a.m., and we'll make arrangements to be there if you need us at a different time. But I'm asking you to go through your cabinets right now," said Lee. Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the Christian Cupboard at any time, by using the drop box on the side of the building. People wishing to donate perishable items, like eggs, milk or meat -those items should be dropped off when the cupboard's volunteers are on site. Home and Garden Clara Mae Marcotte is a Texas Master Gardener with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. If you have a question to be answered, call the Master Gardeners at 830-379-1972 or leave a message to be answered. The website is The Master Gardener research library is open Wednesdays from 1 to 4, at 210 East Live Oak Street in Seguin. Q: A friend says she is going to divide her Gulf Muhly. Is this the right time of year? A: If you are going to divide your fall blooming perennials and your ornamental grasses, do it now. Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac says this allows time for them to reestablish themselves before blooming. Your ornamental grasses can have their dead foliage cut off now also, since new growth has already started growing from the base. Mine is sprouting as is all the grasses around Seguin High School.

Q: How can I control bedstraw (some call it sticky weed)? A: Calvin Finch says to keep it mowed. This works, of course, if it’s in the lawn. If it’s in the flower beds, you need to rake or to pull it up. It really helps to pull it out now before it blooms and goes to seed. I have fewer this year than last year since I was very proactive in pulling out the plants.

Q: I do not like to put out seeds for the birds because it makes such a mess and becomes expensive. Is there something I can do that is easier and cheaper, yet still provides for our feathered friends? A: You can provide one very important item: water. Place shallow bird baths high enough off the ground to make it harder for cats. However, in my yard, other animals are also looking for water, such as raccoons, possums, armadillos, squirrels, foxes and probably other animals I don’t even know about. So place a few water containers on the ground. Bird friendly plants can be put in your flower beds such as salvia, Turk’s Cap, flame acanthus, Esperanza, and others.

Q: What is the plant growing down the median on 123 Bypass? Is it forsythia? A: The plant in the median is Primrose Jasmine, Jasminum mesnyi. Even though it is not a Texas native it is very easy to grow and is deer resistant. Forsythia blooms best in northern Texas and likes acidic soils.

Q: When do I fertilize my lawn? A: Welsh recommends that you fertilize in the spring after you have mowed the grass twice. This shows that the grass is actively growing. In the fall, fertilize after the grass has stopped growth.

Q: I would love to have a vegetable garden but I have a small yard and the only sun I have is by my front door. Help! A: Pots! Not only are pots good for small places, they are also higher in the air which makes it easier to weed and to harvest. Almost anything can be grown in a pot. One Patio tomato would be lovely in a pot by your front door. Green herbs can be grown in a slightly shadier spot. Last year I had a pot of basil by my front door that looked absolutely great (and tasted great too). I always keep a pot of parsley growing by my back door along with a pot of chile pequin.
