Explaining that check to the San Antonio Food Bank is Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher.
“In last year’s budget, we made allocations of America Rescue Plan Act funding to a number of different projects and or entities. One of them was the San Antonio Food Bank in the amount of $100,000. Food, pg. 4

Local library to host pair of events for kids, teens this Saturday
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- The Seguin Public Library is apparently the place to be on Saturdays. Hannah Farmer, the youth service manager at the local library, says activities for kids of all ages continue this Saturday with a pair of monthly events. She says the first is for younger children ages 3 to 11.
“This Saturday at 11, we are doing a Sound & Music Story Time. So, I’m going to bring out my ukulele. We are going to bring out musical instruments for the kiddos and we will read stories having to do with music and play games like call and repeat type games with instruments and they will even get to make their own little musical instrument crafts. So, just celebrating all things music and reading stories about those things. Again, it’s ages 3-11. The little kids can have fun but I think the stories will really appeal to the older kids. Everybody loves music so why not?” said Farmer.
On the other end of the library will be another event for teens, ages 12 to 18. Farmer says the event is dubbed “Teens” Cookies, Coffee And Games!”
“From 2 to 4, we will be in the large meeting room playing games and enjoying cookies and coffee and hot chocolate so just a relaxing afternoon just to hang out. We will have Uno and Event, pg. 4

Navarro Panther athletes to benefit from annual casino night
(Seguin) -- All bets will be on the table this weekend in support of Navarro Athletics. Tickets still remain for the annual "Let 'Em Ride" Casino Night benefiting the Navarro Athletic Booster Club. The event gets underway at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Texas Agricultural Education & Heritage Center better known as the Big Red Barn.
Club Treasurer Tammy Harborth says in addition to hosting the event at a new venue this year, the group is excited about reaching the 10th year milestone for the annual fundraiser which all goes back to Panther athletes.
"We've moved the location this year to the Red Barn on Cordova Road just for a different atmosphere but we have like 40 tables. We've got over 20 live auction items, lots of silent auction items and each varsity sport does their own unique silent
auction item. So, everything raised, every dollar, all money raised -- 100 percent of the money goes back to Navarro Athletics. Booker Box is a local family (owned business) from Navarro. She is doing a huge $2,000 charctuerie board. For food, we have Rudy's Barbecue doing sliders. We have El Ranchito doing cheese dip and salsa and chips so it's going to be a fun night," said Harborth.
In addition to live and silent auctions, the group will host various raffles.
Harborth describes the event as a major fundraiser for the organization. She says in addition to food and music, there will be tons of casino games all under the operation of Casino Fun out of Schertz. She says they always bring out a great group of dealers and hopes that the adults in the community will also come out and
have a little evening fun.
"We still have some tickets left. All of our tables are sold out. It's a fun night to get away from the kids. It's an adult fun night to meet the parents of your (child)'s friend, interact, became a part of the booster club, and become a part of the community. This is what this is about -- about giving back and it's just going to be a good night," said Harborth.
The Navarro Booster Club each year works to host fall and spring banquets, provides tournament hospitality rooms, the purchase of team spirit items and provides thousands of dollars to eligible seniors.
Tickets at the door are $30 a person. Individuals must be 18 and older to attend.
The Big Red Barn is located at 390 Cordova Rd.

“ some other classics but we will also have some new table top games that have been donated by another librarian for us to use that program and then as a library, we have some really complex games. There’s one called The Isle of Cats and Azul which are more complicated so we have a couple of hours to peruse those and learn the rules and hopefully, use them at more events especially with the summer coming up,” said Farmer.
Farmer says these scheduled events on Saturday are usually a good time for the entire family to come out to the library. She says it’s important that parents not forget how their big kids can still benefit from the ins and outs of the local library.
“Obviously, we want to promote fun

educational activities for youth especially in that middle school and high school range when they are learning who they are and the library is a great place to learn things that they are interested in. We try to offer different things. This time it’s gaming. Gaming is also really great in developing critical thinking skills in a fun way
where you are not tied to a desk and having to do the classroom stuff. It’s a little break from school but it’s still developing skills and they are in close proximity to the wonderful books that we have for them to check out. So hopefully, they also want to check out a book or two while they are here. They can get dropped off when they are teens. They are old enough to be here alone or the library is a great place for the family. If you’ve got younger ones too, leave the teen in the gaming events and take your little one over to read stories and play with the puzzles in the children’s section or have some me time in the patio,” said Farmer.
Both events this Saturday are free. Adult events are also scheduled weekly. Families are encouraged to visit the library’s website or Facebook page for all other upcoming events.
“The San Antonio Food Bank was very instrumental in not only helping the county but all citizens within the county, the public during the pandemic on making sure we had viable and reoccurring food sources for individuals that were in need. They were basically present in Guadalupe County helping out prior to the pandemic and have continued a high level of service to the public and literally have been wonderful partners to every entity within Guadalupe County. You can call them at any point and say you need help and they come running. So, I know we all approved this in the budget. This is basically just part of the process to solidify the request for the $100,000 from the America Rescue Plan Act fund that our grant administrators have reviewed,” said Kutscher.
Thanking the county for its support is Mario Obledo, the chief of government and public affairs officer with the San Antonio Food Bank.
“Thank you for the leadership and the support that you provide to your county and to the food bank so we can nourish those that need our assistance. Judge, you mentioned before the pandemic, yes, we were serving and during the pandemic served and post pandemic still serving and I do want to recognize Patrick Pinder, Allie and staff for all the support they have given us to nourish folks by way of partners, the Navarro ISD, Schertz-Cibolo at Steele High School and Clemens and Marion and we are hoping to have some more distributions elsewhere in the county so we can serve the county as a whole. So, I did want to recognize that. So, this support that ya’ll have before you today on the agenda is going to help us nourish the families of Guadalupe County and do know that we are only a phone call or text away so in any type of natural disaster or an event like that gas leak a year and a half ago or so, we will be there. We will mobilize and we will serve your residents,” said Obledo.
Kutscher says these last few years have more than illustrated the impact that the food bank had on folks especially those who don’t necessarily face a hardship with food.
“Mario, I can’t say thank you enough. I’m glad you brought up the gas leak because I think there was that issue in Seguin on that repair basically during a repair, a line was hit (and) it drained the gas during cold temperatures in the city of Seguin. When the operations center had some initial meetings with the city, I think it was that afternoon or the next morning, the food bank was there and within two days had a major food distribution set up. I mean those are the kinds of partners that we have and again, that were here before and will be here after
all these events took place so I just want to say thank you to them and I look forward to continuing our partnership together,” said Kutscher.
During his comments to the court, Obledo especially gave thanks to one commissioner in particular.
“Judge, one last thing. I do want to recognize the full court for the support but also Commissioner Seidenberger who you tasked early on to be that POC that we would work with and he is great to work with and a great support and basically, I call him the Food Jar for Guadalupe County to help get nutrition to households so Commissioner Seidenberger, thank you for your leadership,” said Obledo.
Approval of the funds for the food bank was made during Tuesday’s meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.

Lehigh Valley Pediatrician Charged In New Jersey For Allegedly Sexting With Minor
(Whitehall Township, PA) -- A former Lehigh Valley pediatrician has been charged in New Jersey for allegedly exchanging sexual texts with a minor. Prosecutors in Warren County say they opened an investigation after a student reported that a friend was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a 47-year-old man. Dr. Moshe Markowitz of Allentown was a pediatrician for the Lehigh Valley Health Network in Whitehall. Officials there say he was terminated immediately after he was charged last week. His Pennsylvania medical license has been suspended.
Cities Facing Water Problems
(Undated) -- People who live in cities around the world are facing a looming water crisis, according to a new UN report. The UN World Water Development Report out this week predicts that the number of city dwellers who lack safe drinking water will double by 2050, to nearly two-point-four-billion people. Water shortages are also a problem in rural areas, where more than two billion people already experience shortages for at least a month a year. The UN says governments will need to work together to ensure safe water as demand is only going to grow.
Asteroid Samples Suggest ET Source For Life On Earth
(Tokyo) -- New findings suggest life on Earth may originate from extraterrestrial sources. Scientists in Japan point to an analysis of samples collected from an asteroid in 2020. More than 20 types of amino acids -- which are the building blocks of life -- were collected from an asteroid about 180-million miles away from Earth. Researchers say the findings increase the possibility that water and other organisms had their origins in space.
