Ducks ready to DROP!
Duck Fest 2023 retuns this weekend at Navarro ISD
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – May the ducks land wherever they fall. The Navarro Education Foundation is changing things up in hopes of creating even more excitement for its annual Navarro Duck Fest Fundraiser.
NEF President Katie Clark says after a few years of hosting the event along the waterways of Walnut Springs Park in downtown Seguin, this year’s effort will return to district grounds where instead of floating to the finish line, the ducks will be dropped from the sky.
“This year is going to be super exciting. Instead of floating the ducks, we are dropping the ducks from a helicopter onto the Navarro High School football field and the closest 30 ducks to the center of the Panther will win prizes. The rubber duckies will be dropped out by either the winner of the Principal’s Challenge or a representative that is assigned. Whichever campus
adopted the most ducks wins the $3,000 Principal Challenge Grant and gets to drop the ducks out of the helicopter,” said Clark.
Clark says adopting the $5 rubber ducks is easy. She says all folks have to do is go online and purchase them under the education foundation tab found on the district’s website at nisd.us. Also on that page, will be the opportunity to sign-up for another fun event scheduled that same day.
“We also have a 5K this year. We are back at the high school and junior high at Navarro and we will be starting the 5K at 11 a.m. The Navarro Jazz Band will be playing. We will have the national anthem at 11 and then the 5K will kick off and it’s all on campus at Navarro and as the runners finish up and come back, we will drop those ducks from the helicopter,” said Clark.

Navarro ISD superintendent search process inches CLOSER to the end
(Geronimo) – Naming a superintendent finalist for the Navarro ISD could be as early as tonight. The Navarro ISD Board of Trustees will meet during a special meeting to conduct interviews of applicants for the superintendent position. Those interviews will take place behind closed doors. Tonight’s agenda also allows for the consideration or possible action in naming a finalist if necessary. The district looks to officially fill the position of former Superintendent Wendi Russell who retired last spring. The district is currently under the leadership of Interim Superintendent Dee Carter. Carter served as the longtime superintendent prior to Russell’s appointment.
The special meeting gets underway today at 5 p.m. in the Navarro Intermediate Administrative Conference Room.
Unveiling the future to students SEDC
to host Seguin Career Day
(Seguin) – The future of local high school seniors from Seguin ISD, Navarro ISD, and Marion ISD will be presented to them today one booth at a time. The students today will gather at Seguin High School’s Wellness Center to participate in the annual Seguin Career Day, an interactive and dynamic experience that facilitates a connection between high school students and local Seguin businesses.
Seguin Career Day is an event implemented by the Seguin Economic Development Corporation to ensure the long-term viability of employers
within the Seguin community. For years, Seguin employers have reported a sizeable gap between the talent that they need to keep growing their businesses and the talent they can find. Over the past couple of years,
the Seguin Economic Development Corporation has collaborated with existing industry, local school districts, and other economic development partners to try and close the skills gap and create a stronger talent pipeline.
Organizers say Seguin Career Day helps to close the skills gap by bringing employers and students together. Today, nearly 20 employers from the Seguin community will gather at Seguin High School to showcase their company’s operations, career pathways and highlight the educational attainment and skill sets that are... ... required for success in that company’s industry. This event encourages students to explore their interests while providing them the opportunity to learn how they can apply those interests to future professional endeavors.
Rick Bough, director of career and technical education for Seguin ISD, says Seguin Career Day is a great opportunity for students to meet local employers and learn more about potential careers in the community.
“We appreciate the chance to work together with Navarro ISD, Marion ISD, and the Seguin Economic Development Corporation to make this day happen. We look forward to the positive outcome this event will have for our students, local industry, and our community," said Bough.
A variety of employers will be represented at this year’s Seguin Career Day, showcasing manufacturing, healthcare, utilities, public service, and more. This event will also act much like a job fair and will provide some students the ability to walk away from this event with job offers to begin work immediately following their graduation.
Josh Schneuker, executive director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation says this event will create a conduit between the businesses that need employees and the students looking for career opportunities in the Seguin area.
He says this is also a great opportunity for the graduates that are going off to college to see that Seguin has a lot to offer when they get their degree.
Meanwhile, students who walk away from today’s Seguin Career Day with job offers, will have the opportunity to participate in a subsequent event called “Seguin Industry Signing Day” scheduled for May 2023.
Seguin Industry Signing Day is an extension of a national event that applauds high school seniors who made the decision to pursue a career in skilled trades, a sector in high demand that continues to face an immense labor shortage. This program is compared to that of a student’s athletic scholarship signing day.
Ducks, continued.
Of all the changes to this year’s fundraiser, Clark says returning Duck Fest to the Geronimo community is perhaps the most exciting of them all.
“The original Duck Fest was actually in Geronimo and we floated the ducks on Geronimo Creek and we had a 5K at the school so with the drought situation at Walnut Springs and then there was some damage to that little dam that helped pool up the water at Walnut Springs, we were very concerned about water levels and flow which is always kind of a challenge with floating ducks for a race. So, we brainstormed as a board. Somebody mentioned dropping them out of the helicopter and the idea formed and we ran with it,” said Clark.
Clark says the invitation to Duck Fest is for everyone and even encourages families outside the district to join in on the fun. She says the bottom line is ensuring those extra dollars for classrooms districtwide.
“Then something very important to understand is that all of this money goes back to classroom grants at Navarro. Last year, we gave $80,000 in classroom grants to enrich the campus. The teachers apply for the grants for things like field trips, technology, materials, things that they need for their classrooms to make the educational system more exciting,” said Clark.
This year’s list of changes also includes moving up the fundraiser to April instead of May.
The goal for the group is to adopt out 1,500 ducks for the helicopter drop. During Duck Fest, families will also be treated to free kids’ games. Kona Ice will also be on site. The Navarro Cheerleaders will also be selling hot dogs, chips and drinks.
The Duck Fest Helicopter Drop and Waddle 5K will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Navarro football field. 5K registration and warm up begins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the helicopter duck drop at noon.
Again, cost to adopt a duck for a chance to win a prize is $5. The cost to participate in the 5K Waddle is $10 per person.
Ducks will be available for adoption up until the drop or while supplies last.

Wilson Wins 400th at TLU; Bulldogs Pitching Staff Shines as TLU Sweeps Wellesley Wilson
SEGUIN, Texas -- The No. 4 Texas Lutheran softball team swept two non-conference home games against Wellesley College on Monday at Ed Kruse Stadium.
A defensive battle took place in game one against the Blue as the opener saw a combined 13 runners left on base before TLU (19-3, 5-1 SCAC) was able to bring around the decisive run in walkoff fashion in the bottom of the seventh. Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/GregoryPortland) went the distance - keeping the Blue offense at bay, sprinkling four hits across seven innings. Kloee Wells (Dayton/Dayton) broke the standoff between the two teams with a pinch-hit walk off single through the right side, allowing Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek) to race around from second for the game-winning run.
With the win, Texas Lutheran head coach Wade Wilson secured his 400th win as the head coach of the Texas Lutheran softball program. Wilson is in his 12th season as the head coach and holds a record of 401-82 (.830). Overall, Wilson holds a career record of 784-153-6 (.835) in 25 seasons as a head coach at the high school and collegiate levels.
Game two saw the Bulldogs put up a four spot in the second and fourth innings on Wellesley (0-5-1). TLU would take advantage of Wellesley throwing errors with the bases loaded to score the first three runs of the game in the second inning. Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody) would ground out to shortstop but would drive in Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll).
Caelee Clark would drive in Reagan Hillis (Cedar Park/Cedar Park) in the third to extend the TLU lead to 5-0 after three.
Walks would doom the Blue as they would walk the bases loaded before Hillis and Taylor Vannett (Kingwood/Kingwood) would drive in a run each on a hit by pitch and walk respectively as TLU worked station to station in the fourth. Senior Bailey Hudgeons (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) put the game in run-rule territory with a pinch-hit double to right center, scoring Hillis and Missy Muras (La Grange/La Grange).
Reagan Hillis paced the team in game two going 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
In the circle, Amanda White (Lockhart/Lockhart) moved to 7-3 on the year. White went three innings and allowed no runs or walks and just one hit paired with three strikeouts. Freshmen Katelyn Howard (Waller/Hempstead) and Jaelin Ornelas (Amarillo/Caprock) entered in relief for the final two innings. Howard tossed a seamless fourth inning while Ornelas would strike out two and allow one walk in relief in the fifth inning.
Texas Lutheran moved to 19-3 and are outscoring opponents 148-36 on the season. The pitching staff has tossed an NCAA-leading 10 shutouts on the year with 108 strikeouts to 21 walks and a .189 opponent batting average.
The Bulldogs return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 29, for a midweek doubleheader with DePauw University at Ed Kruse Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 and 6 PM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

Colonel George Robert (Bob) Hyatt III (Ret), age 83, of Seguin, Texas passed away on March 21, 2023, at his home.
Bob was born June 28, 1939, in Pearsall, Texas to Bob and Grace (Howard) Hyatt. He lived in South Texas as a young man, lived and worked on a ranch for a time and developed a love of horses. He graduated High school in San Marcos Texas in 1957. Bob earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1961. Later in life he earned two master’s degrees; one from Auburn and one from New Mexico State University. While still at Southwest Texas State University, he made his first great decision and married Aubrey Carolyn Allison.
Bob was a career air force pilot. In training, flew the T-37 Tweet and T38 Talon. His flying skills were recognized, and he became an instructor pilot immediately after his flight training. He also flew the F-100 Super Sabre for a time. All his initial flying was in jets. The US Air Force sent Bob to Vietnam to fly the smallest slowest single engine propeller plane you can find, the O-1 Bird Dog. During this first tour in Vietnam, he was a Forward Air Controller for the famed
11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, “The Black Horse”. In that first year, he saved countless lives flying over 400 missions at low altitude, often under fire, calling in supporting air strikes. It was during this tour that Bob was awarded the Silver Star by the US Army. For the rest of his life, he was particularly proud of his membership in 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. After his first tour in Vietnam, he moved over to the Strategic Air Command and began flying the B-52 Stratofortress, one of the largest combat aircraft in the world with eight jet engines. He made a second trip to southeast Asia in the B-52 flying combat missions out of U-Tapao Thailand. We can say he was a great pilot!
After retiring from the Air Force in Albuquerque, NM, he became a Special Ed teacher and taught at Los Lunas High School, as well as Briesmeister Middle School in Seguin. He was quite involved with his horses and team penning. In 2000, he and Carolyn moved to Seguin Texas where he continued teaching for a few years and continued to enjoy his horses. One of his horses was a Palomino and for a time, he rode with the Palomino Patrol. He also volunteered at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and was a member Kiwanis and was president of Kiwanis for a year. In June of 2021 he made his second great decision and married Judy Johnson.

Philly Officials: Water Is Safe Until At Least Tuesday
(Philadelphia, PA) -- Officials in Philadelphia are trying to assure residents the tap water remains safe after a recent chemical spill in the Delaware River. It was announced Monday that the public can continue using the water until at least Tuesday afternoon. The spill is believed to have happened after a pipe burst at a plant in Bristol. It’s estimated about eight-thousand gallons of latex finishing chemicals were dumped into a creek. While testing is ongoing, officials say the contaminants from Sunday’s spill should be clear from the river by Thursday.
CDC: Contaminated Eyedrops Have Caused Three Deaths, Blindness, Eyeball Removal
(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC says contaminated eyedrops now recalled by the FDA have caused three deaths and blindness in at least eight people. The CDC blames a bacteria known as Pseudomonas for at least 68 recent eyedrop contamination cases in 16 states, some of which have caused death, blindness and corneal infections that don’t respond to medication. Some patients have even needed surgical removal of their eyeballs. Dr. Omar Awad, a corneal transplant expert in Minnesota, says he’s concerned that many people will be afraid to use eyedrops commonly prescribed for a number of conditions. The FDA’s recall involved just two eyedrops prescribed for dry eyes: EzriCare and Delsam Pharma Artificial Tears.
Journal: AZ Had Highest COVID Death Rate In U.S. (London) -- Arizona had the highest death rate from COVID-19 in the United States. Washington, DC wasn’t far behind at 526 deaths per 100-thousand. Hawaii, New Hampshire, and Maine had the lowest rate of deaths. The report looked at data from January 2020 when the virus first appeared to July of last year.
DC National Zoo Gorilla Pregnant With Second Baby

Workers are now preparing for her “highly anticipated birth,” which should be between late May and early July.
