New demographics study has the Navarro ISD DOUBLING in size

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro ISD is doing its part to create some much-needed elbow room at its elementary school. Interim Superintendent Dee Carter says the results of an updated demographic study have finally been released to the district. She says those results show a spike in the number of students that will be attending the local campus this upcoming school year.

“It’s pretty stunning when you look at the numbers. We are well over 700 students at the elementary school now which serves grades prekindergarten through third grade currently. But well over 700 students and the demographics study projects that we may go to 855 children in grades pre-k through 3

for next year. We can not accommodate 855 children in that building. This year, we purchased and moved in two portable buildings which added four classrooms. So we added four classrooms at the elementary and we are more than full at that campus still and of course, the common spaces really get stressed as well even if we could bring in more portables to that building -- the cafeteria, the gym (etc.),” said Carter.

Although she began anticipating these results a month ago with the district’s leadership team, Carter says these latest numbers only cemented a plan to move the entire third-grade class over to its intermediate campus.

“By moving third grade, it will stress out the Intermediate School some but that campus was built for 700 to 750 students and it can accommodate in the common areas more students, more easily than the elementary school can. So, at this time, we are moving forward with that. Now, we have a lot of things to look at. How are we going to accommodate for all the specials that children participate in -- art, music, PE, technology, library -- all of those things. We have staffing issues that we will be studying as well but our intention right now is to move forward with that move,” said Carter.

Carter says the results were released only a few days before members of the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees met for their regular meeting on Monday. She says apart from the fact that they don’t want almost 900 children at the elementary campus, the board realized that there was also no real available land space to place portables at that campus in order to address this anticipated enrollment.

Over at the intermediate campus, however, Carter says portables can be used and will be necessary.

“There are currently about six classrooms that can be used at the Intermediate School but fourth grade is going to grow some so we may need one or two classrooms for fourth grade so we are going to need some additional classrooms at Intermediate as well,” said Carter.

This shifting of students, however, is expected to only be for a few years. Carter says the hope is that the solution will come with the construction of the new voter-approved high school just south of Link Road.

“When the new high school is finished in two years

if all goes well with the supply chain and the ability of the contractor to be able to hire enough people to build it, it should be a two-year project. When that high school is completed, then the current high school becomes a middle school and sixth grade will move out of the Intermediate school. So, we are hopefully, just looking at a two-year pressure situation for the Intermediate school,” said Carter.

Carter says while it has been a slow start, the district is zoning in on that high school to help alleviate a good portion of these growing pains.

“It’s been a slow process because it took a while to get the real estate and all of the plans drawn to that particular site and then all of the permits and studies for TxDOT and the zoning approvals, it just takes a long time and so we are very much hopeful that there will be shovels in the ground at the first of August and that there will be an August complete date in 2025,” said Carter. “So we’ve got two years and five months.”

The construction of a new high school is just one component of preparing for future growth. Carter says while things might appear to be easing up a bit in regard to home sales, studies still indicate that the Navarro ISD is on its way to doubling in size.

“Our demographer did show us that while there is still a lot of housing starts happening, the closings have slowed down a little and that is due to the fact that interest rates have risen and that makes a difference for a lot of people as they look at their monthly mortgage costs. So, that has slowed things down a little bit. Supply chain issues have slowed things down a little bit for the contractor as well. While we still see lots and lots of activity and we expect to see an approximately 10 percent growth in the district each year for the next 10 years and that doesn’t sound like a whole lot until you add that up but you realize what it does over those years. It’s very likely that this school district will have over 5,000 students within 10 years. Currently, we are at about 2,200,” said Carter. What does that mean? It means the school district will need twice the number of school buildings that it currently has.”

Lady Panthers Walk-off in Extra Innings, Plus Other Area Baseball and Softball

(Geronimo) -- Samantha Mundine’s basehit on a 3-2 pitch in the bottom of the 8th inning drove home Kaislynn Tovar with the winning run as the Navarro Lady Panthers overcame a five-run deficit and a rain delay to walk off with a 9-8 extrainnings win over Gonzales on Tuesday night.

Navarro trailed 7-2 going into the bottom of the 4th, but the Lady Panthers scored four runs in that inning and two in the 5th to take a one-run lead. Sarah Falor, Tovar and Mundine all drove in runs to help Navarro take the lead. But then in the top of the 6th, Gonzales’ Kelly Breitschopf would lead off the inning with a line drive homer to center to tie the game at 8.

A 30 minute rain delay would follow and the score would stay tied until Tovar lead off the bottom of the 8th with a triple leading to Mundine’s walk-off hit. Mundine went 5 for 5 on the night.

Navarro pitcher Samantha Wegman picked up the win in relief, going five innings after replacing starter Reagan Herrera in the 4th inning. The win keeps the Lady Panthers unbeaten in District 28-4A play at 3-0 while the Lady Apaches fell to 1-2. Navarro will be on the road on Friday to take on La Vernia. and Panthers will battle again on Friday night in Geronimo and we’ll have that game for you here on KWED.

Colonel George Robert (Bob) Hyatt III (Ret), age 83, of Seguin, Texas passed away on March 21, 2023, at his home.

Bob was born June 28, 1939, in Pearsall, Texas to Bob and Grace (Howard) Hyatt. He lived in South Texas as a young man, lived and worked on a ranch for a time and developed a love of horses. He graduated High school in San Marcos Texas in 1957. Bob earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1961. Later in life he earned two master’s degrees; one from Auburn and one from New Mexico State University. While still at Southwest Texas State University, he made his first great decision and married Aubrey Carolyn Allison.

Bob was a career air force pilot. In training, flew the T-37 Tweet and T38 Talon. His flying skills were recognized, and he became an instructor pilot immediately after his flight training. He also flew the F-100 Super Sabre for a time. All his initial flying was in jets. The US Air Force sent Bob to Vietnam to fly the smallest slowest single engine propeller plane you can find, the O-1 Bird Dog. During this first tour in Vietnam, he was a Forward Air Controller for the famed

11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, “The Black Horse”. In that first year, he saved countless lives flying over 400 missions at low altitude, often under fire, calling in supporting air strikes. It was during this tour that Bob was awarded the Silver Star by the US Army. For the rest of his life, he was particularly proud of his membership in 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. After his first tour in Vietnam, he moved over to the Strategic Air Command and began flying the B-52 Stratofortress, one of the largest combat aircraft in the world with eight jet engines. He made a second trip to southeast Asia in the B-52 flying combat missions out of U-Tapao Thailand. We can say he was a great pilot!

After retiring from the Air Force in Albuquerque, NM, he became a Special Ed teacher and taught at Los Lunas High School, as well as Briesmeister Middle School in Seguin. He was quite involved with his horses and team penning. In 2000, he and Carolyn moved to Seguin Texas where he continued teaching for a few years and continued to enjoy his horses. One of his horses was a Palomino and for a time, he rode with the Palomino Patrol. He also volunteered at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and was a member Kiwanis and was president of Kiwanis for a year. In June of 2021 he made his second great decision and married Judy Johnson.

Bob is preceded in death by his first wife Carolyn Allison Hyatt, the mother of his four children and his brother William (Bill) Hyatt.

Zelda “Zee” Kindred Pape, age 87 of McQueeney, passed away on March 27, 2023.

Zee was born on July 7, 1935, in Marlin, Texas to Clarice Belle (King) and Alton Finnis Kindred. Zee and her husband Kenneth were the owners and operators of Pape Pecan House and Nutcracker Museum. Zee met Kenneth when he attended a Ballroom Dance Class at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Austin where Zee was a dance instructor. Zee and Kenneth were members of First Methodist Church in Seguin.

Zee is preceded in death by her loving husband Kenneth Hugo Pape,

her son, John Kerwin Pape and his wife Lori, and siblings, Mary Helen Meyer, Dorothy Harrington, and Doris Jean Chambers.

Survivors include her step-daughter, Dana D. Pape O’Hara; sister, Lynel Kindred Werchan; brother, James “Jim” Kindred and wife Lin; sister-in-law, Beatrice Pape; nephew and caregiver, James Dresner; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Floyd ‘Sergeant Easy’ Banta, of Seguin Texas, took his final breath with his loving children by his side, on March 17, 2023, and took his first steps in Heaven a moment later. He passed at the age of 74 years and is survived by his daughters Dollene Banta and Sara [Kevin] Banta, Sons Stephen [Monica] Banta and Bill [Rehn] Bohnas; Grandchildren Jaclyn, Ryan, Autumn, Macey, Jadelynn, Damian, Kambrie, Hailey, Paisley, Katy & 5 Great-grandchildren; His loving friends; Ronnie, Ruth, Linda, Jay & Bonnie, Kevin & Elisabeth, Butch, and lastly, his faithful dog Pax.

Floyd is preceded in death by his mother Brownie Banta, father Jack Banta, brother Stan Banta, and stepdaughter Malissa West.

Floyd will always be remembered by his family and friends as a jovial storyteller of an eventful life; from his time as a young man hunting and fishing his family’s ranch, to rough work in the oil field, being a trucker on the road and tales of his time serving the Army in Vietnam and Germany. His later years in life he was dedicated to his bible studies and spreading the word of Christ.

While Floyd will be greatly missed by his friends and family, they all know that he is in Heaven “catching more fish than you can shake a stick at.” A memorial service will be set for a later date. WestMalissa Lynn West of Seguin Texas passed away March 10, 2023 at the age of 52 years young. She leaves behind her life partner & best friend Jason, daughter Macey Berryhill, son Nolan Berryhill, mother and stepfather Bonnie and Jay Forshage, father Tommy West, sister Sara Banta, brothers Stephen Banta and Bill Bohnas, grand mother Patsy Forshage, nieces; Autumn, Jadelynn, Kambrie, Hailey, Paisley, Katy, nephew Damian. Malissa joins in heaven, her son, Noble Berryhill.

Malissa had been battling breast cancer for many, many years, yet she never let trials and tribulations break her spirit. She loved Minnie Mouse, crocheting, & spending time with her dogs Tootie & Dozey. She was quick witted to crack a joke with her family and friends to try and put a smile on their face, even in times of her own suffering. She was passionate about spending time with her family, especially her daughter Macey, her love Jason, nieces, friends and loved ones.

Kevin M. Kolb, age 56 of Seguin, passed away on March 28, 2023. Kevin was born on May 25, 1966 in Sacramento, California to Helen Tiemann Kolb and Major Maynard Kolb, U.S.A.F. (Ret.).

Kevin was a 1984 graduate of Seguin High School. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a degree in Accounting in 1988. He worked at KPMG Accounting Firm as a Certified Public Accountant. Kevin attended St. Mary’s University School of Law and received his Juris Doctorate Degree in 1993. He met and married Elizabeth Murray while attending Law School. Kevin moved to Denver where he received his LL.M. in 1994 at the University of Denver College of Law.

Upon completion of his studies, Kevin and Elizabeth returned to his hometown of Seguin and practiced law at their firm Kolb and Murray, P. C. He also proudly served as the Municipal Court Judge for the City of Seguin. Kevin and Elizabeth were members of Lifegate Church in Seguin. A jack of all trades, Kevin enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities including scuba diving, hunting, fishing and working around their property. Elizabeth and Kevin enjoyed many travels, especially cruises.

Kevin is preceded in death by his father Maynard Kolb.

Ethel Marie Hassell Dammann, age 83 of New Braunfels, passed away on March 18, 2023. Ethel was born on December 19, 1939 in Sweetwater, Texas to Frieda Emily (Schwarz) and E. C. Hassell. Ethel taught for over 37 years in the Schertz Cibolo Universal Independent School District. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #555 Seguin where she served in many leadership roles including Worthy Matron. Ethel was an active member of First Methodist Church Seguin and Mary and Martha Sunday School Class where she enjoyed many activities including working the Annual Pumpkin Patch.

Ethel is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd James Dammann, her daughter, Ione Dennise Dammann, and her parents.

Swope, age 78 of New Braunfels, passed away on March 25, 2023. Sally was born on April 7, 1944 in Los Angeles, California to Thelma Ann (Rasey) and Carl V. Call.

Sally was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Seguin. She will be remembered as the owner of Sally’s Hallmark Shop in Seguin. She was a long-time member of the Sunrise Rotary Club. Sally and Jim enjoyed weekly dancing for many years at Martinez Dance Hall and the Silver Center. Sally’s most treasured time was spent among family and friends whether it be dancing, attending church, eating out or shopping!

Sally is preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Helams and her parents.

Study: World Population To Peak At 8.5 Billion By 2050s

(Undated) -- A new study estimates the world’s population could peak at eight-point-five billion some time in the 2050s. Scientists with the Earth4All initiative for the Global Challenges Foundation conducted the study. They based their estimate on what they call a “Giant Leap” in investment in economic development, education, and health. The United Nations Population Division reported that the world’s population reached eight-billion last November.

Study Links Strong Friendships And Physical Well-Being

(Washington, DC) -- A study published Monday found a connection between having strong friendships and better physical health outcomes. Positive social interactions were found to decrease blood pressure and heart rate, and increase a person’s ability to cope with stress. Negative interactions, however, had an even stronger adverse effect on the body. The study’s author said it’s these ups and downs that can have the strongest impact. One researcher stressed the importance of scheduling time with friends and providing mutual support in times of trouble.

Train Carrying Iron Ore Derails In California

(San Bernardino County, CA) -- An investigation is underway after a train carrying iron ore derailed in California. It happened Monday in San Bernardino County, where officials say there were no passengers aboard the Union Pacific train. More than 50 train cars, including two locomotives, derailed. One locomotive suffered a minor leak. No injuries or active fires were reported. This comes after last month’s train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, which released potentially dangerous chemicals into the air.

Black Workers Put Mental Well-Being Down As Top Priority

(Washington, DC) -- Mental well-being is a top priority for a majority of Black professionals. A recently published report from the employment platform Oyster says 58-percent of Black workers prioritize mental health over everything. That figure is just under half for respondents over all races. The report suggests Black workers need to put more energy into protecting their mental well-being and can’t afford to spend it in other ways.

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.
