Navarro school board president shares insight into selection of lone finalist for superintendent

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro ISD Board of Trustees has selected its lone finalist for superintendent of schools.

Trustees late Wednesday night approved Mandy Epley as the lone finalist for the job. Epley currently serves as the assistant superintendent of strategic initiatives and programs for the Comal ISD in New Braunfels.

Board President Renee Rehfeld says Epley brings all the skills and experiences that they were looking for at Navarro, including her work in a fast growing district, her experience managing bonds projects, and her strong background in curriculum.

“We had the goal of bringing someone on that had experience in a fast growth district. In addition, bond experience was something

that was critical and construction projects and curriculum and everything that Navarro is facing right now in terms of challenges that we are seeing just by being a fast growth district so when we reviewed all of the applications and chose the people that we were going to interview, that was kept in mind throughout the whole process. In addition, we listened to the community and what the community was looking for as well and it mirrored basically exactly what the board’s priorities were because we all know how the fast growth is affecting the district. We know how the bond and the increase in construction pricing and so forth has been a challenge and will continue to be a challenge,” said Rehfeld.

Largest egg hunt slated for this weekend in Seguin

(Seguin) -- Kids in Seguin are invited to get a jumpstart in the hunt for those Easter eggs. Texas Lutheran University, The Believe It Foundation and Emanuel's Lutheran Church will be joining forces to host what they are calling "an epic, community-wide EGGAPALOOZA " egg hunt this Saturday at TLU's Bulldog Stadium.

Pastor Marcus Biggot of Emanuel's Lutheran Church, says a whopping 20,000 eggs will be up

for grabs across the entire stretch of the football field.

"This was birthed out of a dream that our church and day school had about providing a community-wide Easter egg hunt including everybody not just kids of our day school and church but the entire community. In a conversation with The Believe It Foundation and other folks, it was also about making this event acceptable for kids with disabilities. We wanted to make

it something that was numbers beyond measure. Just make it as exciting as possible. So, we thought what would it look like if we had almost 2,000 kids show up? We wanted them to walk away with as many eggs as we could and so that is why we have 20,000 Easter Eggs," said Biggot.

Biggot says doing away with any obstacle that a child may have in participating might be what is most important about this particular egg hunt. Eggs, pg. 4

The Backyard

Little

Seguin Little League BBQ

(Seguin) -- The race is on this weekend in support of public education in the Seguin ISD.

Sign-up is still available for this year's Race for Education 5K scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at The Backyard.

Kelly Follis, the executive director for the Seguin Education Foundation, says the event is designed for competitors and those just looking for a little Saturday morning exercise.

(Seguin) — If you've purchased a barbecue plate from a Seguin Little Leaguer, then here are two important things you should know. First, that BBQ is this Saturday. Second, the venue for that BBQ fundraiser has changed. Now, as of press time, that location had not yet been confirmed but volunteers were actively securing a spot still in the Max Starcke Park area. The barbecue was originally scheduled to be held as the ticket reads in the big pavilion on the park's east side. The date and time, however, remain unchanged. That's according to Amanda Peterson, the president of the Seguin Little League Board of Directors.

"We are going to start serving probably about 11 o'clock until about 2 p.m. Just make sure you have your ticket and we will do like we've done in the past where we have the plates in the bag ready to go so you don't even have to get out of your car. Depending on where we have our plate sale, we are going to have a place that people can come and sit down and eat and enjoy the atmosphere," said Peterson.

Not only does she remind ticketholders that this weekend is the weekend to redeem those tickets but encourages all others to also come out and enjoy the meal while giving back to the local organization.

"We have plenty of plates. We actually always order a little extra because some of us are procrastinators like myself. So, we will have them there. They are $12 a plate and we should have plenty for everybody if you want to come down a plate if you didn't get a ticket," said Peterson.

Again, the Seguin Little League BBQ will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ticketholders are asked to visit the KWED or Seguin LL Facebook pages for an update on that confirmed location of this year's fundraiser.

"Race-day registration and packet pickup begin at 8 a.m. at The Backyard. The 5K gets underway at 9 a.m. Mayor (Donna) Dodgen will help pass out the awards at 10 a.m. A complimentary "age appropriate" beverage ticket will be given to all race participants and volunteers," said Follis.

Follis says the route will start at The Backyard, travel through Park West, and then return to the local business strip for prizes and the outlet's monthly market days.

Follis says proceeds from the event will go to help increase the number and dollar amount of grants awarded annually to local classrooms.

“The Seguin ISD is blessed by many passionate and dedicated teachers. They have ideas that don't always fit into the tax-funded budget. They dream of inflatable planetariums, ukuleles, weather stations, and special lessons to promote engagement on reading, science, and math. SEF makes those dreams come true to bring innovative teaching to our students. The grant cycle in the Fall of 2022 delivered 22 grants totaling over $60,000, which represents a $10,000 increase over 2021!” said Follis.

Packet pick-up for those who have already registered is scheduled today between 1 and 6:30 p.m. in the Seguin Education Foundation Office located in the Seguin ISD's Central Office building.

A link to register can be found on the SEF Facebook page.

Eggs, continued.

"We want to make sure that this is something that everybody can be a part of. Egg hunts are driven by the fact that when someone says 'go,' they just fan out and just run and run and run but kids with some disabilities can't often do that and are left on the sidelines or sent somewhere else to do a different kind of hunt or different kind of activity and we did not want that. We wanted everybody to be together. It's not about segregating people. It's about doing it together. So what we created in working with The Believe It Foundation and other folks is to create space in the midst of everybody else -- doing it together where kids can hunt together. So, what we are doing is creating raised platforms that will be right at table height where our kids and youth can reach and grab eggs from a wheelchair, reach and grab eggs from a walker or any kind of assisted device along with student volunteers from Texas Lutheran University from Seguin ISD, Navarro ISD -- there will be folks there to help kids hunt and have the best time possible," said Biggot.

Biggot says they have planned the event so that everyone walks away with eggs and everyone has a memorable experience.

"The gates open at 8:30 (a.m.). They will get a wristband. That color of the wristband will coordinate with a real big flag that will kind of be in the home stadium side of the track. We'll gather together at 9 o'clock. We will begin with opening greetings from Mayor Donna

Dodgen

Navarro, continued.

Epley was the unanimous decision for the board, which has spent the last few days interviewing candidates. Rehfeld says Epley left no doubt that she was the right person for the job.

“She’s been very strong with different programs that she has implemented or been a part of through the Northside Independent School District as well as Comal and we just felt like some of the things that she talked to us about, we could see. She sees it from the perspective of being a teacher. She has also coached principals so she understands it from a principal’s standpoint of making sure that the correct curriculum is delivered for every student and really talked a lot about how we can improve getting our scores up because at the end of the day, we’ve always had our district set on being a district of excellence and we feel like she can get us back to being an excellent school district,” said Rehfeld.

have to welcome

Easter Bunny to help make it all happen. So, the 3 and under group will go first and then 4 and 5 yearolds and then the 6 and 7-year-olds and the 8 and 9-year-olds and then the 10 and above. It's about every 15 to 20 minutes, we will have a new group hunting for eggs right in the center of the field. We've got students that are going to kind of dress the field with eggs after each group so each group is going to have about 4 to 5,000 eggs per group," said Biggot.

The board is working to formally fill the position of former Superintendent Wendi Russell, who retired last spring. The position had been filled for months by Acting-Superintendent Luke Morales, but the board announced earlier this year that Morales would be returning to his deputy superintendent position and that it would officially begin a search for its next top administrator. The district is currently under the leadership of Interim Superintendent Dee Carter. Carter served as the longtime superintendent in the Navarro ISD, prior to her retirement in 2020.

Now that Epley has been named the lone finalist, the district must wait 21 days before it can officially hire her for the job.

Colonel George Robert (Bob) Hyatt III (Ret), age 83, of Seguin, Texas passed away on March 21, 2023, at his home.

Bob was born June 28, 1939, in Pearsall, Texas to Bob and Grace (Howard) Hyatt. He lived in South Texas as a young man, lived and worked on a ranch for a time and developed a love of horses. He graduated High school in San Marcos Texas in 1957. Bob earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1961. Later in life he earned two master’s degrees; one from Auburn and one from New Mexico State University. While still at Southwest Texas State University, he made his first great decision and married Aubrey Carolyn Allison.

Bob was a career air force pilot. In training, flew the T-37 Tweet and T38 Talon. His flying skills were recognized, and he became an instructor pilot immediately after his flight training. He also flew the F-100 Super Sabre for a time. All his initial flying was in jets. The US Air Force sent Bob to Vietnam to fly the smallest slowest single engine propeller plane you can find, the O-1 Bird Dog. During this first tour in Vietnam, he was a Forward Air Controller for the famed

11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, “The Black Horse”. In that first year, he saved countless lives flying over 400 missions at low altitude, often under fire, calling in supporting air strikes. It was during this tour that Bob was awarded the Silver Star by the US Army. For the rest of his life, he was particularly proud of his membership in 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. After his first tour in Vietnam, he moved over to the Strategic Air Command and began flying the B-52 Stratofortress, one of the largest combat aircraft in the world with eight jet engines. He made a second trip to southeast Asia in the B-52 flying combat missions out of U-Tapao Thailand. We can say he was a great pilot!

After retiring from the Air Force in Albuquerque, NM, he became a Special Ed teacher and taught at Los Lunas High School, as well as Briesmeister Middle School in Seguin. He was quite involved with his horses and team penning. In 2000, he and Carolyn moved to Seguin Texas where he continued teaching for a few years and continued to enjoy his horses. One of his horses was a Palomino and for a time, he rode with the Palomino Patrol. He also volunteered at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and was a member Kiwanis and was president of Kiwanis for a year. In June of 2021 he made his second great decision and married Judy Johnson.

FDA Approves Over-The-Counter Sale Of Narcan (Washington, DC) -- The FDA is green-lighting over-the-counter sales of Narcan by late summer. That means the drug that reverses opioid overdoses will be available without a prescription. Narcan, which is administered as a nasal spray, is credited with saving thousands of lives over the past few years. The ongoing opioid epidemic killed 107-thousand Americans in 2021, mostly from fentanyl overdoses. Emergent BioSolutions, the Maryland company that manufactures Narcan, hasn’t disclosed an over-the-counter price but non-profit groups say it’s likely to be about 47 dollars for a two-spray kit.

One of the researchers, Dr. Jennifer Belding, told KGTV the study went beyond the brain and found 45 different health conditions associated with the exposure, including lupus and asthma. The study is now looking for military spouses to participate in its next round of research.
