Guadalupe County, city of Seguin School districts extend recognizes Census Day 2020 closure until May By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The question that everyone is asking today is, "have you filled out your 2020 Census survey?" Today is Census Day. The census counts every person living in the United States and five U.S. territories every 10 years. Each household should have already received their census questionnaire. Today signifies the day that all responses should be reported in. However, due to the COVID1 9 pandemic, the Census Bureau has extended the deadline through mid August.

and statistics and again data to help project where we are going, where we need to be, how budgets get allocated, all those things. So while it may seem mundane and not really that important, it is extremely important. I think that I read a report that only 18-20 percent of people fill out their Census form. I sure would like Guadalupe County to set a benchmark to have that doubled if not tripled while we all have that extra time to have those Census forms filled out and give good information so we could make good decisions on their behalf," said Kutscher. Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer for the city of Seguin, says the city is encouraging its citizens to fill out the survey by the end of today. She says the final count is especially important for those always wishing for

"What I want to say about Census Day, folks while you have extra time at home, it's the perfect time to fill out your Census form. It is extremely important beacause it gives benchmarks and demographics and data that help drive certain funding mechanisms -- help political entities, state and the federal government decide on what resources get allocated in certain areas. It gives us matrix

"The (census) data also helps when retailers consider bringing and opening stores here in Seguin. A lot of retailers base their decision on population and we must have an accurate population count and the way that we can do that is everyone participates in the census," said Sourdellia. Guadalupe County Judge applauds the efforts of those still open for business By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

positive cases are released individually, they do all that they can to tackle any threat of the virus at the first sign of exposure within a company.

(Guadalupe County ) -- Guadalupe County officials are applauding manufacturers and other businesses for not only remaining open but for also making things as safe as possible for their employees. County Judge Kyle Kutscher says the county has some stand up business partners who have really helped to keep things going despite the COVID-19 pandemic. "I also want to commend some of the large scale manufacturing employers because modifications have been made and were made early on about augmenting and changing shift schedules, shift sizes, separation, additional cleaning. I'm not going to name them today but on Saturday, one of the local large employers actually I think slowed production and then stopped to do a deep clean on the facility and then opened back up on Wednesday. When you shut down a line with that many employees, I mean you are talking about considerable money and expense but they are doing that for the safety of their employees. So, I feel like a lot of these large manufacturers, employers are doing their part and they are trying to protect their employees and for those who think that all these employers should be shut down, I understand the safety aspect of that but when you have community members, employers, businesses doing their part to protect their employees

still remain open so that there is not even more of a negative impact to the economy and the community, those measure are being taken," said Kutscher. Kutscher says while some may question a company's decision to stay open, he reminds them that such workplaces often provide the most controlled environments for the prevention of the virus and safety of employees. He says it also allows the economic impact to be not as substantially hard hitting when the community recovers. "To the employees that may complain a little bit that they have to go to work all this and would rather sit at home, I guarantee you, there's a lot of people sitting at home that wish they have a paycheck right now that in a couple of weeks may have a challenging time

making rent or mortgage or paying for childcare when it comes back available or even going to the grocery store or making a car payment. I think that we all need to again not worry about what somebody else has and what we don't have and be thankful for the things that we do have and especially our health and if we are able to work and have a paycheck -- be thankful for those things and look to help those that may be in a little tougher time right now but we've got some stand up businesses and folks in our community who are really looking out for everybody so I want to say thank you to them also," said Kutscher. Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator, says keeping employees safe is also vital to ensuring the safety of all businesses. He's although

"All of the cases reported are individuals. There's no work place. There is a rumor going around that a local business in Seguin has a positive case and that rumor has not been validated. We get questions on that everyday that every time a positive case comes out, that it is a worker that works at this facility. That information is not validated. If that information is validated, the employees at that facility would know that that there was a case because the Texas Department of State Health Services would have gone to their facility, contacted the employees and let everyone who works at that facility, that there was a potential to an exposure. The two cases that we named -- businesses in the county -that was just a customer going into a business doing some shopping and they left and that's why we got that information on those businesses but if it's a business owner or employees at a business that think it was their partner or their coworker, if that's the case, the Texas Department of State Health Services would contact your boss, contact the company and you would know about that case if it was in your facility," said Pinder. Comments by the judge were made during Tuesday's meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.

Sourdellia says tackling the questionnaire is easy. She says the process itself is safe, secure and confidential. "There's three different ways to respond. All of these ways, you do not have to talk to a numerator at your door. You can do this either online at my2020census.gov. I actually completed by Census survey online a few weeks

ago and it only took about five to seven minutes so it is really fast and easy. Also, you can respond by phone. Whenever you receive your census form, there will be phone number on the form. That would be the phone number that you call. You can also put your census form in the mail after you complete it and just mail it back in. So, those are really the three easiest options in getting this done and out of the way so that everyone is counted," said Sourdellia.

Guadalupe County shares steps, procedures in announcing positive COVID-19 tests By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Guadalupe County) -- Guadalupe County is again reassuring residents on the steps that are being taken to keep everyone on top and in the lop of the COVD-19 pandemic. Guadalupe County is currently reporting a total number of 17 cases countywide. Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator, on Tuesday, shared with the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court the process that his office follows in making sure that all current and up to date information is properly disseminated. Pinder says all information is provided to the county by the Texas Department of State Health Services. "We put together a flow chart. We wanted people to see how the information is disseminated from the state. This was one of the biggest concerns. Like I said, people are saying that the county isn't giving information and we wanted to let people know that this is how the information is disseminated. So, the department of state health services contacts

myself. I make the notification to the judge. Then once I receive the information, I contact Guadalupe County dispatch and we input information into the first responders system so that the first responders identify areas were patients may be. We contact the local municipality. That municipality, if they have a patient in their area, they make the notifications to their people, to their city councilmen, mayors and that stuff. We notify the city of their cases. They put out a press release after our press release," said Pinder. Pinder says updates on any increase in number of cases should also be expected later on in the day -- a time in which the most current information will be available. "The county is that point were we release these press releases at six o'clock. It is just easier for us because the Texas Department of State Health Services makes notifications up until six o'clock. I did receive one the other day. It was like 6:06 so that's why our press releases come home so late. On the weekends, we get those releases. We get the notification over the weekend so it's not like

we are holding information so I just wanted everybody to know that's why you are seeing those press releases come at 6 o'clock because that's when they notify me," said Pinder. Again, Pinder says it's important for folks to remember that all official positive cases will first be reported directly to the state health office.

remember is that the virus is here in our community. He says no matter what areas are identified, the fact is that every location in the county is vulnerable. He says that's why social distancing and not leaving your home if you don't have to are vital in stopping the spread of the virus.

"The information that we release is only confirmed from department state health services. We do get calls all the time that say I heard there is 10 cases in this area. I heard there's 20 cases in this area. We want people to know that we do not release information unless it is verified by Texas Department of State Health Services. If I get a phone call from a local physician that says he has a patient that tested positive, that information is verified through Texas Department of State Health Services and until that information is validated, we do not release any information," said Pinder.

"People want all the information. They want to know addresses. They want to know exactly where this person lives, where they have been. We don't have that information. If there's an exposure to the public, we get that information. If they visited a business out in the public and there is a potential for a citizen to come into contact with them, the state would let us know that there was an exposure. They'll give us the date. They'll give us the time and the location and we'll publish that information but if they don't give us that information, we just have to put it in the system that this person is under isolation at their home and that they weren't out in the public but that can change," said Pinder.

Pinder says names and exact addresses are not part of the public release of cases. He says the important thing for people to

A look at the area’s spring sports teams before the UIL coronavirus suspension: Navarro baseball (Geronimo) – With the University Interschollastic League (UIL) suspending the spring schedules of the state’s high school athletic programs until at least May 4 due to the coronavirus, we take a look back at the interrupted seasons for some of the teams in the Seguin area and Guadalupe County. The fourth instalment in the series focuses on the Navarro High School baseball team. The Panthers hoped to contend for the District 304A championship and put together a deep playoff run in Kris Cavazos' second season as head coach after finishing third in disrict, sweeping Devine in the bi-district playoffs, and dropping a tightly contested area-round series Robstown in 2019. Navarro's 2020 team was 8-5 with consecutive wins over Sealy and Taylor in the La Grange Tournament when the UIL suspended competition in mid-March.

The Panthers claimed wins over Wimberley, Pearsall, Veterans Memorial, Somerset, S.A.-Lanier, Fredericksburg, Sealy, and Taylor, while coming up short to San Antonio Christian twice, Liberty Hill, Cornerstone Christian, and Bellville.

Meanwhile, Cuero graduated District MVP Jared Barta and Pitcher of the Year Michael Barta in the off-season. Seven of La Vernia's nine post-season award winners from 2019 were seniors a year ago.

Navarro had a pair of non-district games against Taylor and Yoakum remaining before the 30-4A schedule was set to begin last week.

Leopold was Navarro's most effective player at the plate and on the mound over the first 13 games of 2020.

Cuero and La Vernia were the teams that finished ahead of Navarro in the district standings last year.

The senior pitcher and infielder led the team in batting average (.564), RBIs (13), stolen bases (6), triples (3), and slugging percentage (.795).

The Gobblers were 6-7-2 in non-district play this season, the Bears 7-6. Navarro returnees who earned All-District recognition in 2019 include First Team selections Riley Lipton, Dakota Leopold, and Mark Wozniak, along with Second Team honorees Jacob Frederick and Sam Muniga.

Leopold and Jaxen Monkerud gave the pitching staff a dominant 1-2 punch. Leopold was 3-1 with a 1.61 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 21-2/3 innings. Monkerud was 3-0 on the mound with a 2.88 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 17 frames. See NAVARRO, page 5
