Seguin Baseball Falls While Lady Mats Get Big District Win Tuesday Night

Chris Austin

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Matadors fell in the first of two games in three days against San Antonio Wagner 6-4 on Tuesday night over at Smokey Joe Williams Field.

Corey Dailey made his first career start on the mound for Seguin. The freshman walked two in the first inning leading to two runs, but he would settle down and shut out the Thunderbirds for the next three innings before allowing two more runs in the 5th and a run in the 6th. Dailey would not walk a batter after the 1st and struck out three on the night in 5 and a 1/3 innings of work.

The Mats outhit the Thunderbirds 11 to 7, but would leave 10 men on base in the game and had three runners tagged out at home in the 4th and 5th innings, two on plays at the plate with the Wagner infield in and one on a failed suicide squeeze play. The missed opportunities would be the difference in the two-run loss.

Matthew Marek lead the Mats with three hits and Landon Trost reached base in all four of his plate appearances. Trost also made some nice plays in the field in center.

Seguin falls to 0-7 in District 26-5A play with the loss. The Mats and T-Birds will play again Thursday night over at Wagner High School.

Meanwhile, back at Seguin High School:

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Lady Matador softball team got a big district win over Smithson Valley on Tuesday night holding off the Rangers, 4-3.

Ryan Rangel was huge at the plate smacking a double, driving in three. She also scored a run. Ashlie Aguilar and Chloe Belicek each had two hits and a run scored to pace the Lady Mat attack.

Kendall Hurt got the win in the circle going four innings giving up three runs. Madyson Schultze pitched the final three innings shutting down the Rangers and striking out four to get the save.

The win by the Lady Matadors avenges a 4-1 road loss to Smithson Valley back on March 10th in the first half of the district season. Seguin remains in 3rd place in the district standings at 6-3 while the 2nd place Rangers fell to 7-2. The Lady Mats play at Kerrville-Tivy on Thursday.

(Marion) -- And there was one more game on the softball diamond Tuesday night. The Marion Lady Bulldogs blasted Randolph 18-0 to improve to 3-1 in District 26-3A.
