Local steel mill builds new COVID-19 testing booth By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

that usually it is one to two people that go out just to swab one patient so that is really two sets of gear for every single patient and like she mentioned, we are trying to conserve that for when we have a surge or when there is in-patients that require multiple PPE changes throughout a 12 hour shift or 24 hour day. In practice, in theory, we want to be able to coordinate those tests and the patients that are stable and able to walk and present to basically the isolation testing booth, we will let themselves present. We will already be there just in a surgical mask and gloves within the glove system and that takes away the bonnet, the goggles, the isolation gown, the booties so really, we could test it from five patients a day up to 25 patients a day so that saves multiple sets of PPE every single day once we put that into practice," said Patek.

(Seguin) -- A group of steel makers has come to rescue of the ER staff at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. In its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, GRMC officials say CMC Steel Texas employees, last week, quickly mobilized into action presenting the hospital with a much safer and effective way to not only test patients but to also cut down on the amount of personal protective equipment that was being used to conduct a single test. Tasha Montez, CEO of the Guadalupe Regional Medical Group, says without hesitation, the local steel plant answered the hospital's call for the design and construction of a new COVID-19 testing booth. Montez says news coverage of a similar booth that was built for patients at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston prompted her call to the local steel mill. 'We've had a relationship with Bill Vanderwaal (director of mill operations) at CMC for many years. He's been real instrumental and extremely helpful in getting us some safety glasses for our ER staff, asking us if we need any n95s

or any other items so I had forwarded that video to him I believe Friday morning and I asked him, I said is there any way that you guys could do anything like that and within five minutes, he said, 'I've got my guys around. We are going to look at it and I'll let you know.' So, they were able to deliver that booth at the end of the

day so about 10 hours later, they delivered it. They took the initiative to call Brigham Young Hospital and asked what the dimensions where, how everything was set up and they got to it and built that thing in a day for us," said Montez. Nicole Patek, GRMC's executive director of emergency services,

says cutting down on the waste of proper protective equipment (PPE) is key to ensuring any hospital's ability to remain prepared and ready to combat any surge during this pandemic. "We are doing the drive-thru testing that is coordinated through their physician and each time that means

Patek says the testing booth is made out of plexiglass and of course, steel. She says the product is the result of the many talents of those employed at CMC. Patek says this latest gift is just another example of how this community continues to come together. SEE CMC BOOTH, PAGE 2

Seguin ISD students must now be present during meal pickup or show proper documentation

Those items include an official letter or email from school listing the children enrolled; an individual student's report card; the attendance record from the parent portal (available on the school's website); birth certificates for children not in school and or student ID cards. Again, if students are not in the car during meal pickup, parents/guardians can present one of these items for each student meal needed. District officials say the Seguin ISD does not need a copy, so parents can reuse their documents each day. These documents can be presented for any child from any school district, not just from the Seguin ISD. Parents are reminded that they may only visit one site for meals each day.

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD today is announcing a major change to its Grab & Go Meal Program. Seguin ISD officials say parents pulling up to one of the meal locations must now have their child, the student, present with them. This new rule is to be in compliance with new free meal guidelines set forth by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). In order to ensure program integrity, the Texas Department of Agriculture is requiring that one of the following items be presented at meal pickup when the student is not present.

Additionally, the TDA and the USDA have also clarified expectations for weekend meal service. The free meal program is designed to feed students who would normally have access to meals during regular school days. Therefore, based upon this guideline, Seguin ISD can no longer provide free weekend meals beginning today. Government assistance programs such as SNAP are available for parents and other adults. These programs provide public assistance benefits through an application process. Individuals can receive more information and complete an online application for programs (including SNAP, TANF, and Medicaid) by going to www.yourtexasbenefits.com, or by calling 2-1-1 or (877) 541-7905.

CMC helps GRMC conserve protective gear CMC BOOTH, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 "The ER team and the facility are so thankful and amazed of the community support that we have received. It's gone to small things like coffee all the way up to this testing booth and that means so much to the ER team that is on the front line everyday taking care of these patients. It really did warm our heart. We were so thankful," said Patek. The design behind the testing booth in Boston reportedly came from a concept that was initially put into use in South Korea. Like Seguin, other communities across the country have also inquired about the booth. However, thanks to CMC's quick response, GRMC is probably among only a handful of medical centers to already have a booth constructed and in place. Once the details of the testing booth are hammered out, then Patek says the booth will then begin welcoming patients.

Seguin Succeeds at Home

Seguin ISD works to keep kids locked into learning By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- With the return of school not anticipated until May 4, the Seguin ISD is turning the wheels even more by making sure kids are being given every opportunity to learn while at home. If anything, families and their students have been getting first hand lessons in apps and other technology aides such as Google Classroom, Istation and Zoom. Seguin ISD officials say this week, they are working to make sure parents are partnering up with teachers to either tackle coursework online or through paper packets that are now available at each campus. Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says during the Seguin ISD's latest school board meeting, Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez

was encouraged by what he has already seen and was hopeful to implement even more learning opportunities. "Dr. Gutierrez also went over some of the distance learning initiative opportunities that were created for our students. Our principals, our teachers have been busy working and maintaining that instructional focus with our students. We have been able to do this by providing online learning opportunities for our students, deploying Chrome Books and iPads for students over the past couple of weeks to make sure that they have the necessary materials to go online and do their lessons and in some cases, providing paper packets in which students can work off of and turn in," said Hoffmann. Hoffmann says work being issued is important for every child's own individual growth and says the distance learning coursework will help make that

transition back to school even easier. "We are encouraging our parents to keep their children engaged, to keep their children learning. As a school system, we are obligated to provide that education and that resource and that opportunity for all of our students. These times are uncharted for us as well as for our families but that being said, we want our parents to work with their kids if they possibly can and ensure that they are doing their school work. I mean that's the obligation and that's the expectation is that our students will work on these lessons as much as feasible and try to keep that course work going so should we return on May 4 and that day comes see our children back at our schools, then we don't have a bunch of our students who are behind in their work. So, essentially, this is going to keep them on par and ready for when we return to school," said Hoffmann. See LEARN, page 3

Hoffmann says the district understands that not all parents are home during the day. He says that's why it is important that parents of all grade level students check in and make sure they are in contact with their child's teachers.

WH Expected To Recommend Masks In Hotspots

Trump Sets New Guidelines For Nursing Homes

(Washington, DC) -- The White House will likely recommend people in coronavirus hotspots wear masks to help slow the spread of the virus. Earlier Thursday, President Trump said any recommendation would likely not be mandatory. Coronavirus task force member Dr. Deborah Birx warned if people wear masks, they shouldn't let their guard down. She said officials don't want folks to have a false sense of security just because they're wearing protective material.

(Washington, DC) -- President Trump is giving new guidelines to nursing homes to fight COVID-19. Speaking at the White House, Trump recommended those facilities assign the same staff to care for the same residents consistently. The administration also wants separate areas designated for healthy and sick residents. Trump noted they will likely push for this practice to be used in the future as well. The announcement comes as coronavirus has impacted dozens of nursing homes across the U.S.

Trump Takes More Action To Invoke Defense Production Act In Coronavirus Crisis (Washington, DC) -- President Trump is taking more action under the Defense Production Act to produce more ventilators during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. A presidential directive seeks to "more fully ensure that domestic manufacturers can produce ventilators needed to save American lives." The order covers operations at GE, Medtronic, Royal Philips, Hill-Rom, ResMed and Vyaire Medical. Trump has been under increasingpressure to use all of his authority under the Defense Production Act to wage war on COVID-19.

Fauci Endorses Nationwide Stay-At-Home Order (Washington, DC) -- The top infectious disease expert admits there should be a nationwide lockdown. Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN Thursday night he doesn't understand why there isn't one given what's going on. He points out a federal order is different from what states are doing but says it makes sense to be on the same page. President Trump reiterated earlier he's leaving it up to states to decide.

Home and Garden &Garden Home Clara Mae Marcotte is a Texas Master Gardener with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. If you have a question to be answered, call the Master Gardeners at 830-379-1972 or leave a message to be answered. The website is The Master Gardener research library is open Wednesdays from 1 to 4, at 210 East Live Oak Street in Seguin. Q: I am spending a lot of time in my garden during these trying times. What is the most important job I should be doing? A: In my yard, at least, pulling weeds is the most important because we need to keep the weeds from going to seed. If they are in the lawn, you can mow. After that lovely rain we had, weeds are easily pulled in my heavily mulched flower bed. However, I had completely ignored my milkweed bed and am spending several days getting it into shape. Another job is fertilizing your vegetable plants and keeping pests out of the vegetable garden. In early and mid-April, Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac suggests sowing a second and third planting of beans. If your fruit trees have set, thin the branches that have too many. Many houseplants can now be moved on the porch for the summer. My plumaria which I moved outside from my garage are already starting to leaf out. When your annuals, perennials, and roses have dead blossoms, remove them so the plant will continue blooming. If you had trees or shrubs that bloomed this spring, prune them if they need it. By now, all of your shrubs should have been pruned. Mine have (except for one rose that I keep forgetting about until I walk around the house and see it still unpruned).

Q: What herbs can we plant now? A: Check your stored seed to see what you have available. Basil does really well here. I planted a pot by my front door and another pot by my tomatoes. Basil is one of the easiest to grow, and likes full sun. I found a couple of packets of chives in my seed box. This is another herb for full sun or partial shade. Plus it makes a very pretty plant. My dill did not come up this year. I put in more seeds yesterday, but it may be too late. Mexican mint marigold (Tagetes lucida) is a lovely little plant (24 inches tall, 18 inches wide) with yellow flowers and leaves that taste like licorice. Another nice plant is Mexican oregano (24 tall and 36 inches wide) with pink flowers. Other easy growing herbs are the different types of mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, sweet bay laurel and thyme. Since everyone is doing more cooking right now, I will pass along some conversions: one tablespoon of fresh herbs equals one teaspoon of crumbled dry herbs, or one-fourth to one-half teaspoon of ground herbs. Some herbs can be frozen: basil, chives, dill and mint. In the past, I have frozen fresh washed mint in ice cubes for my iced tea.

Q: How do I get rid of grass burs and bur clover? A: You need to be very proactive in pulling up these plants. After starting years ago with a back yard full of grass burs, I now have none. But this means every day checking and pulling. I am not so good with the bur clover. In fact, it is bad this year. However, pulling the plant before too many seeds ripen makes a big difference eventually. On the plus side, bur clover is a nitrogen fixer and has been used as a forage crop in the Mediterranean.
