Seguin ISD Superintendent to stay in Seguin

Dr. Gutierrez shares more insight behind his decisions to leave, then stay By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez is staying in Seguin. In a late night announcement Monday, Dr. Gutierrez announced his decision to withdraw his plans to serve as the superintendent of schools for the Madison Metropolitan School District in Madison, WI. Gutierrez, had agreed to the job earlier this year and was set to leave the Seguin ISD at the end of the school year. Today, Dr. Gutierrez is sharing more details behind this surprise decision -- a decision that he says not only explains his reasons for staying but also brings to light more details behind his initial attempt to leave. Dr. Gutierrez admits that while pursuing Madison was a great step for his career, it was, unfortunately, made easier by things that were not so pleasant for him as he continued to lead the local district. He says it no longer remains a secret that he had been operating the district all while battling personal threats and negativity by folks out in the community.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced on Tuesday that members of the Texas Senate – both Democrat and Republican – are volunteering staffers to assist the Texas Workforce Commission in answering calls from Texans who are seeking unemployment help. “Senators that I spoke with this past weekend wanted to make sure the Texas Workforce Commission responds to as many calls as possible from Texans

Seguin ISD excited to keep superintendent in place

STAY IN SEGUIN, contnued from page 1 "In the last few months, I have learned so much about this community and I believe that as we've gone through this crisis and have come together in such an extraordinary way, that any negativity that comes our way is not going to be taken lightly. It would be my hope that now since I've announced that I was leaving Madison, that I've not received any anonymous snail mail or emails or not had any interesting happenings occur at my residence and I've not had any news media outlets indicate that they've been sent any information on me but you know, that's been the last several months. So, now that I'm announcing that I'm staying, it could certainly happen again. But what I certainly do believe in my heart is that people will take a stance and not tolerate that. I'm at peace with the decision that I have made to remain here. I believe what this school district needs right now is stability and I really do believe that it would be a disservice to walk away May 29 as we are in the middle of a crisis," said Dr. Gutierrez. Dr. Gutierrez says in no way were any of these negative threats or attacks made by the school board nor were they coming from a majority of the public. In fact, many of these issues came into play soon after he assumed the role of superintendent and began making what he felt were necessary yet unpopular changes within the school district. The specific nature of these various threats and negativity aimed at Dr. Gutierrez were not disclosed. But again, as he mentioned, they are no longer tolerated as his focus will continue on doing what is right for kids. Even after making the decision to leave, it was obvious that the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees did not kept its disappointment quiet nor did they ever give up hope. Despite the bittersweet decision, Dr. Gutierrez says he was ready to fulfill his commitment to Madison, a much larger district. That, of course, was until everyone's lives had changed with the onset of the

COVID-19 pandemic. With the school board only in the preliminary stages of its superintendent search process and the education needs of his Seguin ISD families in question, Dr. Gutierrez says he just knew that he couldn't abandon them in June and ignore what would be the school board president's request to stay. "I think it's important for people to really understand the why? Why, did Dr. Gutierrez interview for that position? I believe that is important and I believe it is important for me. I pride myself on transparency. That if I'm going through any type hardship that that will be completely shared in an open and transparent manner. I am thankful for the board's understanding throughout this process. I certainly believe we have an outstanding board and they will be an award winning board someday soon but when I received that phone call from our board president, I certainly did not hesitate because I had been struggling for several weeks as we've gone through this crisis in thinking about just walking away. I just felt, as I stated earlier, it would be a huge disservice to the school district," said Dr. Gutierrez. Dr. Gutierrez says opportunities for his personal career will always find their way to him but for now, he is doing what he believes is the right decision for everyone especially during these unchartered times.

top during the district's search process. In his letter to Madison, he states," I know the difficulties and adjustments due to the pandemic must be all the more difficult in a major metropolitan city like Madison. But the complications of a town like Seguin in creating an online education system in 30 days and working with the community to protect everyone, to provide everyday sustenance, and the sudden necessity of coordinating in a manner that not only educates but saves and sustains lives has changed my role as superintendent of a small school district from a title and a job to something far more personal. We have become an interdependent family. As much as I recognize that becoming the superintendent of Madison Metropolitan School District would be a tremendous promotion, and that some day I might come to regret the loss of the opportunity, I just cannot leave Seguin Independent School District at this time." Dr. Gutierrez says he's committed to working even harder for the Seguin ISD and its families. He says the work has only begun and again, is grateful to be around to help see things through.

Prior to announcing his news to the Seguin community, Dr. Gutierrez, last week, submitted his letter and new intentions to the Madison school board.

"My top priority right now is ensuring that we are meeting the needs of our students during this crisis because many of our families are experiencing hardships and it's going to go beyond the day that government officials say 'we are open up for business.' There's going to be a recovery period. So, this is not something that is going to end immediately. There are going to be challenges that we endure for months to come and I believe that it was important for me to provide that stability in leadership so that we can continue to work moving forward that we have put into place the last several years but also continue to work that we have put into place right now while school is closed," said Gutierrez.

He says the school district has been operating under an interim superintendent and believes that the district is already in position to fill the vacancy with already identified candidates -- candidates who also rose to the

Sharing her excitement about Dr. Gutierrez's decision to stay in Seguin is School Board President Cinde Thomas-Jimenez. It was Jimenez who initially reached out to Dr. Gutierrez to see if he would have a

"I still have 15 or 20 years left in my career and there's plenty of time to make a career move and it's not the time right now and yes, it is a great opportunity up north but I believe that there is far greater opportunity right now here in the Seguin ISD," said Dr. Gutierrez.

change of heart. During their discussion a couple of weeks ago, Jimenez says it was quite obvious that the thought of staying had also already crossed his mind. "I can tell you that the board is very pleased. We were faced with some challenges, of course, in trying to go through a search and any search is a challenge to begin with but as we looked at the COVID-19 situation, it just became very evident that it was going to be very difficult to find someone to step in. Who knows how long this situation is going to last and when schools are going to return and in what format are they going to return. There's just so so many questions. We were very pleased when he decided to stick with Seguin. I think it shows a lot of character for him to decide to stay here. I think he has a really true and honest commitment to this district, to the city and we are very pleased with the decision," said Jimenez. Jimenez says to have a superintendent reverse a decision about leaving a school district is very unique and unusual. But again, she says these have been very unusual times for everyone. Dr. Gutierrez has served as the Seguin ISD Superintendent since July 2017.

Voters reminded of election postponements Guadalupe County Elections Office prepares for summer, November elections "We want to make sure everyone is safe and the bulk of our poll worker population are those at-risk poll workers, age groups there, and so we don't want to take any chances there either and there is just a lot of complications involved in trying to run a polling place when you have to keep six feet between voters and even poll workers trying to check someone in. You really can't check them in from six feet away so there is a lot of logistical challenges involved in doing that. So, I think that's what the secretary of state and the governor were thinking when the governor issued that proclamation about postponing the election," said Hayes.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The COVID-19 pandemic has, of course, put a hold on voting. Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes says voters will have to wait before heading to the polls. She says the decision comes at the orders of Gov. Greg Abbot and the Office of the Texas Secretary of State. Abbott recently declared the postponement of elections under the emergency powers of his previous statewide disaster declaration. "The May 2 Election is being postponed to Nov 2 so entities that normally do the May 2 will just be rolled into our Nov 2 and then the Primary Runoff on May 26 has been postponed to July 14. So we are seeing postponement on both those fronts. Essentially, that gives us a little time and it gives time I think for this illness to run its

Home and Garden &Garden Home Clara Mae Marcotte is a Texas Master Gardener with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. If you have a question to be answered, call the Master Gardeners at 830-379-1972 or leave a message to be answered. The website is The Master Gardener research library is open Wednesdays from 1 to 4, at 210 East Live Oak Street in Seguin. Q: I am spending a lot of time in my garden during these trying times. What is the most important job I should be doing? A: In my yard, at least, pulling weeds is the most important because we need to keep the weeds from going to seed. If they are in the lawn, you can mow. After that lovely rain we had, weeds are easily pulled in my heavily mulched flower bed. However, I had completely ignored my milkweed bed and am spending several days getting it into shape. Another job is fertilizing your vegetable plants and keeping pests out of the vegetable garden. In early and mid-April, Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac suggests sowing a second and third planting of beans. If your fruit trees have set, thin the branches that have too many. Many houseplants can now be moved on the porch for the summer. My plumaria which I moved outside from my garage are already starting to leaf out. When your annuals, perennials, and roses have dead blossoms, remove them so the plant will continue blooming. If you had trees or shrubs that bloomed this spring, prune them if they need it. By now, all of your shrubs should have been pruned. Mine have (except for one rose that I keep forgetting about until I walk around the house and see it still unpruned).

Q: What herbs can we plant now? A: Check your stored seed to see what you have available. Basil does really well here. I planted a pot by my front door and another pot by my tomatoes. Basil is one of the easiest to grow, and likes full sun. I found a couple of packets of chives in my seed box. This is another herb for full sun or partial shade. Plus it makes a very pretty plant. My dill did not come up this year. I put in more seeds yesterday, but it may be too late. Mexican mint marigold (Tagetes lucida) is a lovely little plant (24 inches tall, 18 inches wide) with yellow flowers and leaves that taste like licorice. Another nice plant is Mexican oregano (24 tall and 36 inches wide) with pink flowers. Other easy growing herbs are the different types of mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, sweet bay laurel and thyme. Since everyone is doing more cooking right now, I will pass along some conversions: one tablespoon of fresh herbs equals one teaspoon of crumbled dry herbs, or one-fourth to one-half teaspoon of ground herbs. Some herbs can be frozen: basil, chives, dill and mint. In the past, I have frozen fresh washed mint in ice cubes for my iced tea.

Q: How do I get rid of grass burs and bur clover? A: You need to be very proactive in pulling up these plants. After starting years ago with a back yard full of grass burs, I now have none. But this means every day checking and pulling. I am not so good with the bur clover. In fact, it is bad this year. However, pulling the plant before too many seeds ripen makes a big difference eventually. On the plus side, bur clover is a nitrogen fixer and has been used as a forage crop in the Mediterranean.
