(Seguin) -- Although Mother Nature had other plans for us here in Seguin, Monday’s partial solar eclipse still fueled plenty of excitement, casting a shadow over much of the city.

Now, if you weren’t among the lucky ones to capture those few seconds of partial totality, you probably saw a bunch of clouds.

With the forecast calling for these clouds and even some rain, Seguin Radio KWED and the Seguin Daily News wanted to at least attempt to bring you some type of glimpse of this “total solar eclipse” that again won’t be seen here in Texas until 319 years from now, or until the year 2343.

KWED Creative Director Lizz Daniels made the trek back home to Bandera County for the day. Daniels headed north on State Highway 173 to experience this rare natural phenomenon with her mother, Arlene Butts.

Although the clouds also obstructed their total experience, the darkness still managed to arrive on their front porch like clockwork.

On assignment, Daniels captured the experience as it happened.

“Look, the light on the flag pole came on,” said Butts.

“Ooh, and the birds. Where did all the birds go?” Daniels responded. “It’s crazy how it’s getting so dark all of a sudden.”

Also adding to their experience during those few dark minutes was witnessing fireworks being shot off at a nearby celebration during the moment of totality— again, just another way for folks to commemorate the moon completely covering up the sun.

“The light is coming back,” said Daniels. “Yes, look over at the driveway,” responded Butts. “Ooh, behind the house, you can see it coming in over in that right side because it’s moving in this direction, and look that side is way brighter than this side right now. There it is, the sun is coming back,” said Daniels.

As the eclipse passed, Daniels reported that the birds sprang back to life, and they could hear a flock of nearby geese start honking. A few moments later, she and her mother also heard a rooster crow his morning song at a neighbor’s house.

While everyone did not have the opportunity to head north toward the area of totality for the Great American Eclipse, the city of Seguin took steps to provide its own unique experience for residents. The Seguin Public Library was among those throwing a solar eclipse viewing party. Eclipse, pg. 3

Planned with plenty of snacks, games, prizes, and special drawings, the library set out to provide a learning opportunity no matter Mother Nature’s behavior.

The event attracted as many as 100 people.

City Manager Steve Parker applauded library staff for rolling out the red carpet during this celestial experience.

“I just want to thank everybody who took part in today’s event, it was, I think, a really good turnout, even, you know, people were maybe scared off a little bit because of the cloud cover. But our staff put a lot of work into making sure that our community had something that they could do on an event today with school being closed and everything. So I think overall, we were pleased with the turnout and hopefully some people will remember this and it could be your career decision one day, maybe a future astronaut or something like that in our community. So really, really cool event

even though we were a little disappointed by the cloud cover, but uh, hopefully we had a good event. The live streaming inside was I think well attended and it was a good, good overall job. So very proud of our staff for putting this together,” said Parker.

Despite the weather, the library experience did not disappoint. It allowed folks to witness a live stream of the event in addition to the partial eclipse.

Area schoolchildren were also witnesses to the event. Although the Seguin ISD canceled classes, the Navarro and Marion ISD classrooms were held outside, allowing students a unique learning opportunity.

After crossing northern Mexico, totality swept across the U.S. from Texas to Maine, heading into southeastern Canada and onto the North Atlantic with views varying for those in its path.

The next total solar eclipse over the contiguous United States will be in 2044, but again, the next time it can be viewed over Texas, like this one will be in 2343.

TLU Completes Sweep Over Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas -- No. 14 Texas Lutheran concluded its road series in Kerrville with an 11-2 win at Schreiner on Sunday. TLU completed the three-game conference sweep in dominating fashion, outscoring the Mountaineers 33-5 on the weekend.The Bulldogs move to 20-2 on the year and 11-1 in SCAC play and will enter their fifth week of SCAC action with a one-game lead over Trinity in the league standings.

On Sunday, TLU stole nine more bases to total 27 on the weekend. Senior Tatum Seith (Hewitt/Midway) led the way offensively against the Mountaineers (2-26, 1-11 SCAC) finishing 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs, and a run scored. Senior Reagan Hillis (Cedar Park/Cedar Park) led the Bulldogs on the base paths with three stolen bases.

In the circle, TLU’s senior duo of Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) and Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) both saw action on the day. Strother would get the start and only allow three hits in four innings while striking out six to improve her record to 13-0 with the win. Ouellette, TLU’s all-time saves leader, would earn her second save of 2024 - allowing two unearned runs on five

hits in three innings of relief.

Tatum Seith plated Annie Kay (Sinton/ Sinton) on an RBI double to start the scoring in the first inning before Kourtney Bellinger (Houston/Grand Oaks) would drive her in with an RBI single.

In the third, Seith would rip her second RBI double of the afternoon to score Kylee Jack (Richwood/Brazoswood).

Texas Lutheran would score five runs on two hits in the fourth. After loading the bases, Jayna Reid (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs), Jack, Seith, and Bellinger would all earn RBIs via bases loaded walks or hit by pitch. Tavery Ortiz (Texas City/Texas City) would cap the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to bring the score to 8-0 and put the game in run-rule territory. Texas Lutheran would tack on another run via an RBI single from Annie Kay in the fifth.

Schreiner would record two unearned runs in the fifth following a two-out Texas Lutheran error to avoid the run-rule and shrink the TLU lead to 9-2.

TLU got the runs back in the top of the seventh via an RBI double from Tavery Ortiz and an RBI single from Reagan Hillis.

Six Bulldogs had multi-hit performances in Seith, Kay, Bellinger, Hillis, and Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) as well as Tavery Ortiz (2-for-5) with seven Bulldogs bringing in at least one run, paced by Seith’s three.

In the series, Texas Lutheran outscored Schreiner 33-5 - scoring 11 runs in each game -and outhit the Mountaineers 40-20. The Bulldogs have held opponents to two runs or fewer in 18 of 22 games.

Georgia Health Officials Monitoring for Bird Flu

(Atlanta, GA) -- Health officials in Georgia say they are monitoring for any cases of the bird flu. This week, a dairy worker in Texas contracted the virus. It’s the first known case globally of a person catching the bird flu from a mammal. The Atlanta-based CDC says the person is being treated for pink eye as their only symptom. The patient is also on an antiviral drug and isolating. The Georgia Department of Agriculture says they have not had any reports of the highly pathogenic avian flu and that there is no current threat to cows and chicken in the state.

Abortion Amendment Has Enough Signatures For Ballot

(Phoenix, AZ) -- An effort to protect reproductive rights in Arizona’s constitution has reached a significant milestone. Arizona for Abortion Access has announced that it’s collected over 500 thousand signatures to put an amendment before voters this November. It’s well above the minimum threshold for ballot measures, which is around 384 thousand, and well ahead of the July deadline to submit signatures to the Secretary of State. The amendment, if approved, would allow abortion care up to the point of viability. Opponents of the measure believe the language is too vague and could make it too easy to terminate viable pregnancies.

Sentenced For Tampering With Pain Medication

(Muskogee, OK) -- An Oklahoma nurse has been sentenced to one year in federal prison for tampering with pain medication intended for patients in acute pain and distress. Thirty-three-year-old Rebecca Holloway of Oklahoma City worked in the Intensive Care Unit at Mercy Hospital in Ardmore. She removed fentanyl and hydromorphone from their vials, and then refilled the empty vials with tap water. US Attorney Christopher Wilson says she compromised the health, safety and comfort of vulnerable patients for her own self-serving needs.

Feds Help Palm Beach County Combat Food Insecurity

(West Palm Beach, FL) -- Federal resources are helping Palm Beach County fight back against food insecurity. The government is giving more than one-point-five-million dollars to Palm Beach County Food Bank and the Alpert Jewish Family Service. The money will pay for a new kitchen, additional employees, mental health services, and food assistance programs.

Registration Open for City Summer Day Camp

Registration is now open for the City of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department’s Just for Kids Summer Day Camp program for those who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grade, not to exceed 11 years of age.
