City parks officially close for the Easter weekend

Delivering the story of Christ curbside

the golf course, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Normally, it's a busy, busy weekend. It's sad that we have to close the parks and tell people 'no, you can't come and enjoy your Easter -traditional celebration -- in Seguin parks.' Easter is huge in Seguin but in order to help and do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the health and safety of our residents, we have to take the necessary steps just this weekend only, Friday, Saturday and Sunday to close the parks entirely," said Jones. Jones says as parks director, it is difficult to keep the parks from the community especially during this particular time of year.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- All of the city's largest locations for Easter gatherings and traditions will be closed to families this weekend. City of Seguin officials are reminding the public that all parks will be closed to help stop the community spread of COVID-19. Jack Jones, the director of the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department, says for the last several weeks, most of the amenities in the parks have already been closed to the public with the exception of the golf course, park green space and trails for walking and biking.

"The Easter weekend by far is our second busiest time in Seguin parks next to July Fourth for the fireworks show and parade and all of that. So in the interest of public safety, we wanted to limit the gatherings," said Jones. Jones says every year, each park reports activity with the majority of Easter gatherings happening at Max Starcke Park.

Jones says the Seguin Police Department will be doing its part to enforce the closure as much as possible this weekend. He says once they’ve cleared this weekend, then all parks However, Jones says in order to combat and will reopen for community use. But again, he prevent the safety of all residents, every city says individuals will still be required to park will be totally off limits these next few practice social distancing. days. Local churches turn to new ideas plus technology to help share the Easter message

First United Methodist Church shares message along with invite for Good Friday observance By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Public restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic will not be stopping the observance and footprints of Christ this Easter weekend. First United Methodist Church is one of the many churches in Seguin and around the nation who will be relying on technology and other innovative ways to ensure that the Easter message is delivered. Pastor Rev. Cathe Evins, of First United, says today marks the observance of Good Friday. Evins says as an alternative to a mass gathering, the local church will be presenting its Good Friday video titled, "The Final Hours." "This is unusual for us not to have services during Holy Week but it's the most important week of the year, crucial to our Christian faith so we just felt that we could not let that go by without having a service to commemorate the cross and all that leading up to Easter," said Evens. Evins says the video is for all those in the community who want to travel alongside Christ as he makes his way to the cross. She says the video will be made available for viewing on YouTube after 5 p.m. Friday. "What we've done is we had all three of us pastors have recorded different sections of the Scriptures that are leading up to the cruxificiation and then we interspersed those readings with musical selections from our organist and choir director so our music director, Keith Robinson has gotten all of that input from us and he has spliced it together and actually the background scenes are each going to be different. Each pastor recorded in a different place and so I think it will be very powerful and moving to see the different voices coming through, interspersed with music that is applicable to the readings and it resonates with us and at the end of the service will be a solo rendition of 'Where You There?' which I think will be very moving for the service to end in silence so I

encourage everybody to take a look at that and once again remember the greatest day in history ever was the one that secured our salvation," said Evins. Evins says the story of Easter continues on Sunday with a live broadcast of its service beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Seguin Radio KWED. That service will also be available on the church's Facebook page.

saw that actually, his pathway was going to lead to an arrest and then to the cross and then by the time that Easter morning came, all of the disciples were hidden away and afraid behind locked doors so I almost feel like this year, it is an echo of that very first Holy Week. That it wasn't a time of let's get together and have ham and celebrate, get an Easter outfit, got to church. It was actually a time of fear and being huddle together in very small groups behind While church leaders worked to assemble their new plans closed doors and so in a sense, that's where we are today. for the Easter celebration, Evins says it became apparent to We are not sure what each day will bring with the news all of them that this year's message would feel a little ahead but we know how the story ends and we do know familiar. that Easter morning did come. I know that this too shall pass," said Evins. Evins says more than ever, families are encouraged to accept this year's message and incorporate it into their own lives. "In the meantime, just to keep the faith and to realize that God is walking through this with us. He is in charge of all things in our lives and knows the plans that we have for us and those plans are good I believe so prayers for our leaders, prayers for the health professionals and those on the front lines that are trying to help all of us get through this time. I'm extremely thankful for the folks that are researching and caring for people and I hope that people will reach out, give a call to somebody who may be living alone or who is maybe needing something at the store, anyway you can spread the love of the Lord by encouraging one another through this difficult time and helping us all get through it together -- I think "You know interestingly enough, the very first Holy Week that's the best thing that we can do," said Evins. if you will when Jesus began entering into the city of Jerusalem on a donkey and there was a parade and people Again, most if not all churches in Seguin have adopted a were sure that this was going to be a great, great week new way of sharing their Easter message. Online and other ahead that he was going to become king of Jerusalem and special services for local churches can be found on the take back that reign from Roman officials and then when religious page of this weekend's edition of the Seguin Daily the week went on, it just got progressively worse and News. City to enforce park closure during COVID-19 pandemic CLOSED, continued from page 1 "Once we get passed this weekend, the park will still open to a certain degree. We have closed some of the amenities to where you can't have gatherings of 10 or more like the basketball courts, the skate park, the splash pad, the playgrounds but again, we are trying to limit the spread of COVID19. So we have closed some of the park amenities but not the entire park per say except for this

Easter weekend when we do have the large gatherings of families and friends and Easter Egg hunts and all of that going on Easter weekend," said Jones. Jones says safety is always key for his department and applauds those crews who have been working harder than ever these last several weeks to not only keep the parks clean but to also keep them trimmed and mowed as best as possible.

Crossroads Church to deliver eggs, Easter message with curbside delivery

Family Medicine Hormone Therapy Children Women’s Health Geriatrics Aesthetics Weight Loss

RECEIVE 20% OFF Premier Facial - OR-

20% OFF First Set of Eyelash Extensions By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- A local church is gearing up for a curbside delivery of the Easter message. Crossroads Church is inviting families to its Drive-thru Eggstravaganza this Sunday in the church parking lot. Pastor Natalie Avalos says the drivethru Eggstravaganza is their answer of delivering the Easter message along with a few colorful eggs for local children. "Usually every year, our church puts on the Crossroads Easter Extravanganza which is downtown. We usually use Central Park downtown -- every year, we've been doing this since Crossroads Church started in 2007 and so we order our eggs ahead of time which we have 30,000 eggs that kids usually hunt. Well obviously, we are not going to be hunting downtown, so we decided that we could do a drive-thru and the parents could just hop open their trunk so we have a system where there will only be 10 people on the campus

surrounded in the parking lot and we have a line-up system much like if you would park at a Spurs game and so people will drive-thru color coded with a tag of the amount of bags needed on each one of the windshield wipers so there's no contact with the people and they just drive through, pop their truck, curbside service and we'll go ahead and put the bag with the communion elements, some family treats as well as literature so they can go home and do the Easter story with their children. So that's what Crossroads Church is providing to our community. I think we are going to have over 600 bags ready to go," said Avalos. Avalos says not only is the church ensuring the wonderful treats for kids but it's also equipping families with the things they need to continue their celebration at home. "They will be dispersed within a certain period of time from 8 to 8:30 a.m. and then there will be another slot from 10 to 10:30 a.m. The hope is that as soon as people get their bags

and they drive home, they can catch the live service to do communion in the privacy of their home with their children with us online. So, that's the thought," said Avalos. A special live broadcast of the church's service will also be available on Seguin Radio KWED from 11:30 a.m. to noon Sunday. Avalos says during this time of social distancing, she wanted to ensure the importance of not only keeping safe but also of continuing the celebration of Christ. "Our message to families is that all of us working together to stay safe and to respect what authorities have to say -even Jesus, himself, every time people tried to catch him and (would say) hey, you are doing this on the Sabbath or you are doing that on a Sabbath, yet, he'd always adhered to authorities when he said 'give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar' when they tried to catch him on taxes and so our thing is we want our families to stay home and listen to authorities so that we can get

back to our life as normal but at the same time, we want to respect the spiritual meaning of Easter which is why we came up with this plan to fulfill -- get everything that kids would need in their home to have the Easter story of what Christ did for us which hopefully, will provoke them for faith and hope and stay away from fear but really motivate the love in their home to do something as a family together, recognizing the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords that we all serve," said Avalos. Each of the Easter family packs will, again, include candy filled eggs, communion elements, coloring pages, snacks and activities. The drive-thru Eggstravaganza will be held Sunday from 8 to 8:30 a.m. and then again from 10 to 10:30 a.m. The bags will be distributed until 10:30 a.m. or until supplies last. Crossroads Church is located at 3455 W. US Hwy 90. Families are reminded to stay inside their vehicles at all times.

Fauci Thinks Americans Should Move On From Shaking Hands USNS Mercy Crew Member Tests Positive For COVID-19 (Undated) -- The government's top infectious disease expert thinks Americans should find a new way to greet each other. Dr. Anthony Fauci told the Wall Street Journal's podcast he thinks we shouldn't "ever shake hands ever again." Fauci explained it would be good to prevent coronavirus, as well as decrease the number of influenza cases across the nation. Social distancing has been a big part of trying to slow the spread of COVID19. That includes avoiding handshakes and staying at least six feet away from others.

(Los Angeles, CA) -- A crew member on the Navy hospital ship docked in Los Angeles has coronavirus. A spokesperson said the USNS Mercy crew member tested positive and is now in isolation onboard the ship. They will soon be transferred off-site. The Mercy was sent to Los Angeles to care for non-coronavirus patients as hospitals in the area deal with those infected with the respiratory illness.

CDC Updates Guidelines For Essential Workers Exposed

Trump Again Criticizes World Health Organization

(Washington, DC) -- The CDC says essential workers exposed to coronavirus can stay on the job, as long as they don't have symptoms. The new guidelines were updated Wednesday. This applies to first responders, health care workers and those at grocery stores, restaurants and convenience stores. The goal is to return them to work with a face mask and temperature check. The CDC stresses anyone who feels sick though should stay home.

(Washington, DC) -- President Trump is again slamming the World Health Organization. Speaking at the White House, Trump criticized the agency for it's response to the coronavirus pandemic. He argued the WHO could've done a better job if "they have a correct analysis." The President also claimed the WHO favors China, despite what he described as a major gap in funding. He said it's not fair to the U.S. or the world.
