SISD cracks down on student vaping with new detectors
(Seguin) – On top of all other issues that school districts face year after year, there is yet another relatively new but rapidly growing problem –– vaping. Vaping, which utilizes a handheld electronic device to “breathe a mist (vapor) into the lungs,” continues to grow among youth in local schools and campuses across the nation.
Terms associated with vaping include things such as e-cigarettes or vape pens. Originally promoted to help smokers transition away from traditional cigarettes, vape pens with alluring flavors such as strawberry kiwi or blue razz lemonade are making their way into the hands of kids as young as 11 years old. Over the last 10 years, vaping or inhaling nicotine and sometimes other drugs has been the new fad reported among kids.
Kids possessing and using vape pens in schools have also become serious issues for districts everywhere. In the Seguin ISD, however, enough is enough.
That’s according to Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, who says district officials have taken the fight against vaping one step further.

TAC applauds county work ethic
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – Guadalupe County is getting the recognition it deserves for getting things done. The county was recently acknowledged during a recent meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court
Extending greetings and applause was Alan Bristol, of the Texas Association of Counties (TAC).
“You are one of my best counties. You have tons of really good officials that not just only serve your citizens but have served in various capacities on TAC boards. You’ve got Chris Klein who is currently on there. Teresa (Kiel) has been a board member. Kyle you are on the risk management pool board. Your county gives a lot and you do a lot,“ said Bristol.
I do want you to know and I’ll say this publicly, you have pretty good officials compared to the rest of the state, you are definitely one of the top counties as far as functionality and getting things done. I know when you are in the middle of things, it doesn’t always feel that way but believe me you are a very functional, good county,” said Bristol.
On top of getting to work, Bristol says the officials and staff members themselves should be commended.
The Texas Association of Counties (TAC) is the representative voice for all Texas counties and county officials.
This cooperative effort is managed by a board of county officials. Each county office is represented on the board.
It’s overall mission -- to “unite counties to achieve better solutions.”
a deterrent as well as to hopefully identify offenders has installed vape detectors at our secondary campuses and these detectors are strategically placed in the school in areas where we know that students might be comfortable enough to take out a vape pen and engage in that activity. As a result, we were able to install these vape detectors. An alarm goes off once that detector is tripped and that allows administration to go and investigate further. Again, it’s a deterrent. We are hoping that students will know that the campus has a vape detector installed, and they will choose not to vape in school and hopefully choose not to vape when they are out of school as well,” said Hoffmann.
Vaping,
Vape detectors are now among the tools used in the
Seguin ISD to help deter students from engaging in illicit behavior at middle and high schools.
“This semester, Seguin ISD as
Hoffmann says the popularity of vape pens has also, unfortunately, added to the number of kids being sent to the Saegert DAEP (disciplinary alternative education program) for discipline.

Vaping, continued.
“We’ve seen an increase in the number of behavioral issues where we have to dole out disciplinary measures, contact parents to let them know that their child has either possessed or was found to be using one on campus. It’s just another item on the plate for public educators to have to deal with. We have our hands full with ensuring that these students receive a proper education in a safe learning environment and the vape pens are certainly not helping that matter, “said Hoffmann.
However, the issue of vape pens does not stop with school officials. Hoffmann says it’s been the other students who have also wanted more of a preventative approach to vaping.
“Naturally, vaping of any sort is prohibited in Seguin ISD schools and the emphasis for all of this really boils down to our students telling us that they were tired of inhaling vape smoke or vapers in certain areas around schools. It was a health issue for our students and a health issue for our staff members as well as a health issue for those students who choose to engage in vaping in school,” said Hoffmann.
Hoffmann says every generation or two has its struggles, and this particular one comes with its own set of risks.
“When you and I were younger, it may have been someone sneaking a cigarette in the restroom and nowadays that is so old people, and nobody does that anymore. Nationwide, it doesn’t matter the socio-economic status
of schools and their enrollments. Students are engaging in this because the vape pens are marketed towards them. The product that goes into the pens are marketed towards young people and they are very portable and very easy to hide and place in a pocket or place in a sock or place down a shirt. So, it’s a very strategically marketed product towards young people and unfortunately, young people are engaging in the activity not taking into consideration the health aspects or the chemicals that are in the products that go inside these vape pens. So, we are seeing this across the country where schools are having to educate students, educate parents on the dangers of vaping as well as put deterrents in to keep these children from doing these in school,” said Hoffmann.
According to the National Youth Tobacco Survey, 78 percent of teenagers use e-cigarettes. Health officials say vaping has spread quickly among teenagers because it is seen as “cool” and at the same time as a quick fix to deal with depression or anxiety. However, they say, “paradoxically, vaping often leads to increased anxiety in the longer run.” Plus, they say vaping can also harm a developing teen’s brain. Adolescence, they say, is a substantial time for a growing brain. In addition, vaping can cause breathing problems, organ damage, addiction, plus a series of other dangerous conditions.
District officials say they hope families begin to address the issue of vaping and the consequences that come with it following the installation of these new detectors at the secondary campuses.
