Matadors honor campus Teachers of the Year

Seguin ISD’s best educators named for the 2023-2024 school year

(Seguin) – The work that goes on inside of local classrooms is not going unnoticed.

Leading that work is this year’s batch of Campus Teachers of the Year in the Seguin ISD.

The top 13 teachers in the Seguin ISD for the 2023-2024 school year have been named. The teachers were each selected as Teacher of the Year by his or her campus peers.

Those named as Teacher of the Year for their respective schools include Tracy Tate of Ball Early Childhood Center; Laura Jones of Koennecke Elementary; Baldermar

Nava of Weinert Elementary School; Diana Stephens of Jefferson Avenue Elementary; Stephanie Ramirez of Rodriguez Elementary School; Brianna

Green of Vogel Elementary School; Angela Bennett of Patlan Elementary School; Amy Castillo of McQueeney Elementary School; Stacey Wiatrek of A.J. Briesemeister Middle School; Traci Salazar of Barnes Middle School; Samantha Noble of Seguin High School; Jennifer Kendrick of MercerBlumberg Learning Center and Barbara Taylor of Seguin Alternative School. Each of these teachers will now go on to compete for the district’s title of Seguin ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year and Secondary Teacher of the Year. The annual awards banquet for that contest is slated in May.

Guadalupe County sheds light on sexual assault awareness

(Seguin) -- Every 68 seconds, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted. And every 9 minutes, that victim is a child.

Here in Texas, the stats of those victims include 2 in 5 women and 1 in 5 men.

Guadalupe County this month is standing in solidarity with those in our community who work each day to support these victims and who work to combat sexual assault.

This month marks the observance of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. Leading the observance by signing a proclamation against sexual assault is the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.

Among those working individually

with victims is the newly named Thriving Hearts Crisis Center. Speaking before the court at a recent meeting was Reghan Thibodeaux who shared the impact that the shelter is having in the communities that it serves.

“It is a time to stand in solidarity with survivors and raise awareness. My name is Reghan and I’m the community engagement specialist at Thriving Hearts Crisis Center which was formerly known as Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter. At Thriving Hearts, we are dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual assault and intimate partner violence across four counties. We understand the profound impact that these traumas can have on individuals and

communities which is why we offer a comprehensive range of services all free of charge. Our services include a 24/7 crisis hotline, emergency shelter, counseling and support groups, safety planning, victims’ advocacy, accompaniment to court and medical appointments and law enforcement. We also offer parenting programs, legal advocacy, sexual assault advocacy, case management and information and referrals. These services are designed to provide survivors with support and resources that they need to heal and rebuild their lives,” said Thibodeaux.

Sexual violence is sexual activity when consent is not obtained or realy given.

Drug operation lands FOUR behind BARS

(Seguin) – An almost two-month investigation has resulted in the discovery of methamphetamine at a local home. The narcotics operation led by the Guadalupe County Narcotics Task Force was conducted in March and April. Officials say just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, narcotics agents not only conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle but also executed a search warrant at a residence in the 800 block of E. Baxter Street.

They say during the operation, methamphetamine was located inside the vehicle from the traffic stop. Methamphetamine was also located inside the master bedroom and secondary bedroom at the residence.

Taken into custody were Nicholas Boria, 30; Mariah McCauley, 29, Terrell Radford, 28 and Brandon Leal, 27. Boria, Radford and McCauley were all arrested and charged with possession while Leal was booked into the Guadalupe County Jail for the manufacturing and delivery of the drug.

The Guadalupe County Narcotics Task Force is comprised of investigators and detectives from the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, the Seguin Police Department and the Cibolo Police Department.

Awareness, continued.

Sexual violence impacts every community and affects people of all genders, sexual orientations, and ages.

In 2023 alone, Thriving Hearts rendered 1,410 services to 452 survivors of sexual violence and provided 124 hospital accompaniments for sexual assault and exams.

In continuing to raise awareness, Thibodeaux says the crisis center will be hosting its Denim Day on Wednesday, April 24.

“Denim Day is an opportunity for us to come together as a community to support survivors of sexual assault and spread awareness about the importance of consent and ending sexual violence. We invite all you to join us at the Cibolo Multi Event Complex. It’s from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

It’s open to all ages and we encourage everyone to wear jeans to show their support. During Denim Day, we will have a performance by Natalie Rose, guest speakers, a Denim Day walk, and some fun games. It is also a chance for us to come together to show our support for survivors and to demonstrate our commitment to ending sexual violence in our communities,” said Thibodeaux.

County officials also extend their appreciation to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office and all law enforcement and fire departments within the county for their daily efforts to assist victims of sexual assault.

Those wishing to purchase tickets for Denim Day are asked to visit the Thriving Hearts Crisis Center Facebook page.

Six Bulldogs Honored by NFF Hampshire Honor Society

IRVING, Texas -- The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced today a record number of members for the 2024 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA and sprint football who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers.

An elite group of 1,989 players from 339 schools qualified for membership in 2024, setting a new record for the number of members in a single year during the program’s 18-year history. The initiative has now honored 18,387 studentathletes since its inception. Click here for the 2024 list of members.

Six Texas Lutheran studentathletes: Jacob Forton (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley), Andrew Gormly (Alvin/Alvin), Yawanathan McKenzie (San Antonio/Cornerstone Christian), Frankie Saucedo (McAllen/PSJA North), Joshua Stanton (Houston/ Lamar), and Landon West (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg) were named as members of the society Wednesday.

“We are thrilled to honor a record number of athletes as part of this year’s Hampshire Honor Society,” said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. “Over the last 18 years, the Hampshire Honor Society has served as a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives.”

Nominated by their respective schools, members of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society must be either:

A senior player, who will graduate this spring/summer, and just completed his final year of playing eligibility in 2023; or

A graduated player, who has been out of high school at least (3) years;

And must have:

Attained a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.2 (4.0 scale); and

Been starters or contributors throughout the 2023 season.

The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF’s

National Scholar-Athlete program by greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year. The program further strengthens the organization’s leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes at the 772 colleges and universities with football programs nationwide.

Jon F. Hanson, the chairman and founder of The Hampshire Companies, provided the funds to launch the NFF Hampshire Honor Society in 2007. He made the contribution as part of his legacy to the organization after serving as NFF Chairman from 1994-2006. He currently serves the organization as chairman emeritus. Each player awarded membership in this year’s Honor Society will receive a certificate commemorating his or her achievement.

“It was my great privilege to endow the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which has greatly increased the number of college studentathletes the NFF has been able to recognize during the past 18 years,” said Hanson. “Nationwide there are thousands of football players excelling in the classroom, and

they are going on to become great leaders.”

“We have honored more than 18,000 student-athletes since 2007 thanks to Jon Hanson’s generosity,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning. “We are grateful for his passionate belief in the scholarathlete ideal, and the Hampshire Honor Society allows us to showcase the names of tomorrow’s leaders while inspiring future generations to follow in their footsteps.”

The Hampshire Honor Society represents an important component in the organization’s rich history as an innovator in promoting the scholar-athlete ideal, which began in 1959 with the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards. Click here to learn more.

Biden To Voters Concerned Over Abortion: Elect Me (Washington, DC) - President Biden has a message for voters concerned about the recent abortion ruling in Arizona. He told reporters today Americans should vote for him in November if they want to protect access to abortion. The Arizona Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a 160-year-old law outlawing abortions unless the mother’s life is in danger. The decision put the abortion issue front and center in the upcoming presidential race. Biden’s political rival, Donald Trump, today said he believes Arizona went too far in the ruling. Trump earlier this week said abortion laws should be left up to individual states.

Trump Doubles-Down On Abortion Stance (Atlanta, GA) -- Former President Trump again says abortion laws should be left up to states to decide, signaling he’s not in favor of any national restrictions. Speaking to reporters in Atlanta today, Trump said that even with the Arizona Supreme Court upholding a Civil War-era abortion ban, every legal scholar agrees with him that it should be a state issue. President biden has promised to restore national abortion protections if he wins a second term. Trump has boasted that he reversed Roe v. Wade with his appointments to the Supreme Court.

Arizona Republicans Quick To Distance From Abortion Ruling (Phoenix, AZ) -- Some Arizona Republicans are denouncing the state supreme court’s decision Tuesday that brought a restrictive 19th Century abortion law back into force. The ban, passed in 1864 when Arizona was still just a territory, bans all abortions except when the mother’s life is in danger. Kari Lake, a Republican running for U.S. Senate and a loyal supporter of Donald Trump, said she opposed the ruling and called for lawmakers to come up with an immediate commonsense solution. Lake previously called the 1864 law “great.”

Other Republicans were also quick to denounce the law. In the meantime, anti-abortion groups celebrated the ruling. Democrats opposed to the court’s decision are hopeful the issue will bring voters to the polls in a state that’s increasingly become a battleground at the polls.
