Seguin manufacturing community remaining vigilant during COVD-19 pandemic
69/48 TUESDAY
Early Easter deliveries
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Despite these uncharted waters brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the local manufacturing community remains healthy. That's according to Josh Schneuker, the executive director for the Seguin Economic Development Corporation. Schneuker says although things can always change, he is proud of how everyone has come together and is moving forward. "For the most part, things remain healthy, we have been having weekly calls with our manufacturing community just to see how things are going, provide relevant updates to that group as well since many of our major employers are manufacturers here in Seguin but right now, things are still moving forward. Things can change day to day though. We are trying to be a resource to our manufacturing community out there. Some companies, just depending on the industry sector that they are in, are going to be a little bit busier than others but I think we are all just trying to adjust and trying to share ideas with one another and trying to keep everybody afloat during this time of uncertainty. I know things will get back to normal. We just kind of have to weather the storm right now and we are all hoping that it is going to be sooner rather than later," said Schneuker. See SEDC, page 2

Quarantined families in Segun were surprised to see the Easter Bunny and safely tossed Easter eggs on their lawns. Instead of the traditional community egg hunt, driving through the neighborhoods was one of the many ways that churches and groups helped families on Saturday celebrate the Easter holiday during this COVID-19 pandemic

Schneuker says the dynamics of being a manufacturing community is also beneficial in holding down a workforce. He says other communities who rely on tourism or other types of commerce are finding themselves not as lucky. "There's some different resources out there that I kind of looked at online that kind of highlight the I guess the vulnerability index is what I've seen it referred to online and because we do have a lot of manufacturing and that type of industry in our community, we haven't seen the mass layoffs and furloughs that we might hear of in other communities so we are a little bit insulated and protected in a situation like this simply because of that," said Schneuker. Schneuker says he is also proud of the enhanced safety measures that have been put into place for that bulk of employees who continues to clock in at the various manufacture ring plants in Seguin. "I do know that with a lot of our manufacturers still operating, they are doing the best that they can to ensure that the safety of their workforce following those CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) guidelines that have been put out there during the situation and I really want to thank all those folks who are still working so hard. There's a lot of folks that are making sure that we have water and
food on the table and they are putting in those extra hours so really thank you to them for all the hard work at this time," said Schneuker. In addition to helping companies fill job openings, Schneuker says the SEDC has also committed itself to focusing on each of them at this time. He says ensuring that they have all the proper resources is vital toward seeing this pandemic through. "We are optimistic that we will be able to bounce back. We are hoping that it's sooner rather than later. For us at the SEDC, it's completely changed our typical operation of work. We've really been focused on making sure that we are a resource to our businesses at this time and that we are trying to put out as much information out there as we can on our social media channels. We've created a special page on our website that has that COVID-19 resources and information. We are just trying to keep that communication with our major businesses and the community so I think a lot of folks and businesses have had to adapt to the changes of the situation -- no different on our end -but we are committed to helping them get through this and we are hoping we can get through this as soon as possible and help that transition to getting back to normal here in the near future," said Schneuker. The SEDC has committed itself to providing a series of COVID-19 updates. These updates cover a wide range of areas. Those areas include but are not limited to take out curbside businesses, shopping Seguin, remote working tools, health updates and webinars. Those looking for individual information on their business is asked to visit seguinedc.com.

We all know that Walmart and HEB and some of our essential retailer stores that remain open right now are also looking for additional help," said Schneuker. Schneuker says the available jobs encompass a variety of openings throughout the city. He says it's times like these that make this type of job search tool that much more important.

"We hope that this tool can provide our residents with just some of the opportunities that are out there and to give some opportunities at a time when they might have unfortunately lost their job due to everything kind of going on but we are trying to keep tabs on all of the available jobs out there and keep our website as up to date as we can," said Schneuker. Schneuker says the vacancies listed today encompass all available positions. He says these are definitely trying times for
many people especially those who have always had a consistent job and are now facing a bit of uncertainty. "It's going to be a mixture. Some of them are temporary. Some are going to be part-time. Some are going to be full-time opportunities but it is just a matter of checking out each specific job posting but it could be at a time that somebody just might need a temporary position to help them get by until things start to get back to normal in someway. We are hoping the information that we have online can definitely help provide some assistance to our community at this time," said Schneuker. To help ensure the most updated job postings, the SEDC is also asking that the Seguin business community submit employment opportunities to its office. Available jobs can be submitted to www.seguinedc.com/business/sub mit-an-employment-opportunity. They may also be submitted by contacting the SEDC office at 830401-2476.

program to the 2018 TCAL Six-Man title as a junior. McCord was the TCAL Six-Man State Player of the Year in 2018 as Lifegate's starting spread-back. He finished with over 2,000 all-purpose yards and accounted for 58 total touchdowns that season.
McCord has accepted an offer to join the football and track & field programs at Texas Lutheran University.
He was an All-State selection as a sophomore in the Falcons' final season as a member of TAPPS.
The current Panther and former Lifegate Falcon was a First Team All-District special teams player and starting safety in his only football season at Navarro last fall.
McCord was also a dominant track & field athlete for Lifegate.
McCord led the Panthers in kick return and punt return yardage, and returned a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown in a September win over Giddings.
As a junior in the spring of 2019, McCord claimed gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters at the TCAL state meet. He finished second in both the long jump and triple jump.
As a defensive back, McCord recorded 40 tackles, two for loss, and collected three turnovers - one interception and two fumble recoveries.
McCord's only track & field season at Navarro is still in limbo due to the UIL's suspension of spring activities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
His work in the secondary was instrumental in helping Navarro go 13-1 with a District 13-4A-Division II championship and four-round playoff run to the Region IV finals. McCord spent the first three years of his high school career at Lifegate Christian School in Seguin. He helped the Falcons win the TAPPS Six-Man Division III state championship as a sophomore in 2017 and led the
The multi-sport standout is part of Texas Lutheran head football coach Ricky Matt's first recruiting class. Myles McCord recently finalized his decision to attend Texas Lutheran University and compete for the school's football and track & field teams.

US Latest: Over 16,600 Deaths From Coronavirus
Recent COVID-19 Outbreaks Smaller Than Earlier States
(Undated) -- The death toll from the coronavirus in the U.S. is showing no signs of slowing. The country had more than 16-thousand-600 deaths from the respiratory illness as of Thursday night. There were also over 465-thousand confirmed cases, with New York leading the way at 161-thousand. But, more people are also recovering from the disease. That number is closing in on 26-thousand.
(Washington, DC) -- Recent outbreaks of coronavirus are significantly smaller than outbreaks in earlier states. Response Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx says this is because of successful mitigation efforts like social distancing. She says cases in Washington, DC; Baltimore; and the Philadelphia metro area are growing more slowly compared to outbreaks in Washington State, New Jersey and New York. She says she's hopeful for strong recovery rates, adding that in Louisiana, hospitals are starting to report a minimum of 40-percent of COVID-19 patients coming off ventilators.
Over Two Million Tests Done For Coronavirus In U.S.
Pence Ensures States COVID-19 Resources Will Be Provided
(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. is hitting another milestone in the fight against coronavirus. President Trump told reporters at the White House over two million tests have been completed. The commander-in-chief again claimed no other country has done the amount of testing America has. He called the tests "highly sophisticated and highly accurate." Earlier this week, Trump explained he thinks the U.S. has the most COVID cases because of the amount of testing and other countries not reporting results.
(Washington, DC) -- Vice President Mike Pence says he's reaching out to concerned governors to coordinate coronavirus response efforts. He says he called Kansas Governor Laura Kelly after she complained about having to put in multiple requests for medical equipment from FEMA. The Vice President has also spoken with the governors of Kentucky, Texas and Rhode Island to ensure resource needs are being met. Pence announced that the Department of Defense deployed four-thousand-100 active-duty medical personnel to New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Additionally, VA facilities are being opened up for coronavirus patients in New York City; East Orange, New Jersey; Detroit, Michigan; and Shreveport, Louisiana.
HOW DOES COVID-19 SPREAD? The virus is thought to spread mainly from person to person: • Between people who are within about 6 feet of one another. • Via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People are thought to be most contagious when most symptomatic (the sickest), however some spread might be possible before showing symptoms. For more information, visit grmedcenter.com/covid-19
