Serena Gonzalez Named National Player of the Week

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran freshman designated player Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody) has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week following her performance in TLU’s three-game sweep of Southwestern over the weekend.
Gonzalez batted . 714 on the weekend with two home runs, eight RBIs and a double for a 1.714 slugging clip. The freshman Corpus Christi native registered her second three-hit game of her career in Saturday’s run-rule win over the Pirates, finishing 3-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBIs. In Wednesday’s 4-3 win, Gonzalez went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and two walks.
On the season, Gonzalez is hitting .434, which ranks sixth in the SCAC, leads the team with 36 RBIs and leads the SCAC and is ranked seventh nationally with eight home runs. Gonzalez is one homer shy of tying the TLU freshman home run record held by Haley Padilla (9, 2018).
The honor marks Gonzalez’s first career national player of the week accolade following her first conference honor on Monday.
Gonzalez and the Bulldogs travel to Trinity this week, April 14-15, for a three-game conference series. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
Amidst an 11-game win streak, Texas Lutheran softball rose in the NFCA Coaches Poll to No. 3 in the country, the association announced on Tuesday.

Josefina Cañas, age 84 of Seguin, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2023. “Fina” was born in Mexico to Josefina and Jose Salud and lived most of her life in Seguin. She was a member of St. James Church and St. Ann’s Circle and found strength in her faith and family.
Fina is preceded in death by her parents and 12 siblings. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years, Dr. Angel Cañas; daughter Dr. Fina Barouch and her husband Dan; granddaughters, Susanna and Natalie; older sister Elisa; numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and friends.
The recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin, Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. with the Reverend Canon Stanislaw Fiuk officiating. A reception will follow in the Family Center. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Elsa R. Borrego, age 74 of Seguin, passed away on April 9, 2023. Elsa was born on October 7, 1948 in Mexico to Leticia (Rodriguez) and Antonio Robles.
Elsa is preceded in death by her husband, Fernando Garcia Borrego and her parents.
Survivors include her son, Fernando R. Borrego and wife Leslie Flynn; step-daughters, Caroline Macias and husband Robert and Christine Pastrano and husband Jerry; step-grandchildren, Robert Macias, III, Shardee Macias and Danielle Trevino; siblings, Maria Luisa, Enrique, Jorge and Patricia; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.
Visitation will begin on, Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 5 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:30 p.m. with Deacon Nick Carrillo officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Mission Burial Park South in San Antonio, Texas. Serving as pallbearers will be Enrique Robles, Jesse Valdez, Jorge Robles and her son, Fernando.
