Let the battle BEGIN
World’s second largest chili contest returns to Seguin this weekend
(Seguin) -- Visitors from all over the state will again be stirring the pot this weekend in Seguin during the 52nd annual Texas Ladies State Chili Championship Cook-Off. The chili competition is the world’s second-largest.
The competition has been held in Seguin for the last 32 years.
Excited about welcoming over 150 teams to Seguin is Beverly Maricle, one of the organizers for the event. Maricle says Seguin this weekend will no doubt be home to some of the best chili cooks in the state. But to be named the best, the organization must first have judges. She says anyone in the community is invited to come out and put their tastebuds to work.

Big Red Barn inviting folks to take a seat at Texas Hold'em Poker table
(Seguin) -- It's time to put on your poker face. Sign-up is still available for this Saturday's Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament being hosted by the Texas Agricultural Education & Heritage Center, a.k.a. The Big Red Barn. The event is being dubbed, the "All In for Agricultural Education" tournament.
Board member Keith Huebinger says the best player at the table will be looking at going home with this year's grand prize.
"This is a sanctioned event through the World Series of Poker so I want to emphasize that the grand prize of this event is a paid seat at the July 23 World Series of Poker in Vegas. So again, we do have tickets available. You can purchase them online. You can purchase them at Westerholm-Koehler Insurance, Gift & Gourmet, and again at the door Saturday," said Huebinger.

Moonlight & Roses slated for TONIGHT
(Seguin) -- Don’t forget to plan your evening out during this year’s return of Moonlight & Roses. Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB director, says tonight’s event will include live music and the presentation of the 2022 Downtown Awards.
“It’s just a lovely evening in our Memorial Rose Garden which is inside Walnut Springs Park. It’s where we really try to highlight our memorial roses that we have in the park and so we will have live jazz music from Dirty River Jazz Band performing from 7 to 9 p.m. We’ll also have the presentation of our 2022 downtown awards so we will be recognizing a couple of businesses and individuals who have had a significant impact on downtown Seguin either over this last year or over their lifetime,” said Kramm.
Kramm says back by popular demand will again be the sale of specialty picnic baskets that will be ready to be unpacked that evening.
“To help support the Seguin Main Street Program, we also have some picnic baskets filled with charctuerie, a picnic blanket and wine glasses available for purchase and you can purchase the picnic baskets online or at the visitor’s center beforehand. We recommend purchasing those baskets in advance but we will have some of those available for purchase there at the event as well,” said Kramm.
Kramm says he looks forward to seeing new
faces at this year’s event. He says not only is it a night of recognition but also a night of fun and relaxation.
“It’s definitely a great event for anyone to come to whether you are brand new to town or you have been here your whole life. It’s a relaxing evening to sit in the park and listen to music and it’s free to come out. Just bring your own lawn chair and beverage of choice and have a great evening listening to the music and getting to know your neighbors,” said Kramm.
Those wishing to purchase a picnic basket may do so at moonlightandroses2023.eventbrite.com. The cost is $75 a basket. Moonlight & Roses gets underway at 7 p.m. Friday in the Memorial Rose Garden located just behind the Guadalupe County Justice Center parking lot.
Seguin Heritage Museum opens doors today for anniversary celebration
(Seguin) -- The Seguin Heritage Museum will be celebrating a milestone this evening. The museum today will be celebrating its 24th anniversary with door prizes, hors d' oeuvres, and beverages.
Applauding the museum for remaining a staple in downtown Seguin is Main Street Director Kyle Kramm.
"They are helping to preserve
a lot of our history and culture and are really welcoming visitors to the community and making sure that (they) know all that there is to
know about what Seguin has been and kind of where we are headed," said Kramm.
Kramm says the museum tonight will be unveiling new features as well as the museum’s newest exhibit dedicated to some of the women who found Seguin. He says information on women who served the community as educators, nurses, elected officials, and more is on display. Museum, pg. 3
Battle, continued.
“We can always use judges. Usually, 250 to 300 judges are what it takes to pull this off and the more judges we have, the more opinions we have. Right now with our enrollment numbers, the top three will qualify to cook out at Terlingua. So judging is number one. If you don’t want to judge, if you don’t eat chili, you can come out and shop. We have a lot of local vendors that are going to be out here. We have 13 vendors and a food truck. So you can support us by judging, cooking, or just come shop the local vendors,” said Maricle. Maricle says the judging portion of the contest will consume most of Saturday afternoon.
“If you want to judge chili, you can go on to our website and sign-up that way or just come on down to the park. Turn-in is at 1 o’clock and so we would like our judges to arrive at 12:30 so we can start seating them and getting ready for the first round and we do have -- Saturdays is ladies only and then we have a junior competition for young ladies age 7 to 17 and that turn-in is at noon. So you can either come at 11:30 and judge the little ones or you can come at 12:30 the ladies and we usually go about five or six rounds so if you can’t make it right at 12:30 (p.m.), come on down anyway because we will certainly work you in,” said Maricle.
Maricle says the event which will be set up under the big pavilion at Max Starcke Park East brings more than just great cooks to Seguin. She says it brings in dollars as folks shop and eat in Seguin. She says folks arrived on Thursday and will continue their stay until Sunday.
Maricle says the group every year not only applauds the community for coming out to judge and shop but for helping sponsor the event.
“Our sponsors help us pull this off by helping to pay for all of our expenses. This year, we picked up a couple of new sponsors. We have GVEC. We have Fiesta Spices. We have Four Eyes Winery. Mark Herbold from State Farm graciously wrote us a check as well as Westerholm Koehler Insurance. So with these sponsorships, we can give a pretty good donation to our charity which is the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter. They have been our charity of a couple of years and they’ve been very appreciative of what we can do for them and by having community support, we are able to do that,” said Maricle.
Vendors and music gets underway at 10 a.m. To sign up to be a chili judge visit TLSCCO.com.
Poker, continued.
Huebinger says entry is $300 a person or $200 per player when registering as a group of four. He says the Ag center is excited and can't wait to welcome all those who have registered to play in the professionally managed event.
"We have a maximum of 275 players and of course, you do need to be 21 years or older. The way it works, again, it's a hold'em poker tournament so it's a matter of players in a process of elimination until we are down to a grand prize winner. Now, there are prizes. The grand prize is the paid ticket which has a $10,000 value to the World Series of Poker. The top 10 winners also receive prizes starting at $500 in value," said Huebinger.
Each ticket includes the cost of dinner plus complimentary drinks and snacks throughout the tournament.
Registration on the day of the event begins at 12:30 p.m. followed by play at 2 p.m. Registration is also available online at texagedu.org. Proceeds from the event go directly to the Big Red Barn and its efforts to educate and provide programming for children throughout the school year.
Museum, continued.
"So on Friday evening, they are going to have their anniversary party from 5 to 7 which everybody is invited to attend. They'll be showing off their new media room that they just finished and they also have their True Women exhibit up which actually features artifacts donated from local Seguin women.
So, they have some nurse gowns and things like that from some of the first nurses that were in Seguin as well as
some from the first educators as well," said Kramm.
Kramm adds that the new media room will help bring the stories of Seguin and the museum to life for visitors. He says the anniversary party is also a time for the museum to honor its patrons and reconnect with its members.
The museum is always accepting new members. The cost for membership is $40 for an individual, $50 for a family, $65 for businesses, and $125 for corporate. Membership dues help the museum cover

(Tampa, FL) -- Fans attending one of Taylor Swift’s concerts at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa this Thursday, Friday and Saturday face risks that include heat exhaustion and crowd-related injuries. Bayfront Health Emergency physician Dr. Eric Shamas says “Swifties” need to make sure they’re properly hydrated and need to watch out for signs of possible heat-related illness. Shamas says Swift fans should pace themselves and take a break during the concert, which is expected to last three hours with temperatures at the start around 80 degrees.
Texas Plan To Import Drugs From Canada
(San Antonio, TX) -- There is bipartisan support for a bill in the state legislature that would allow Texas to import certain lowpriced drugs from Canada. The bill’s author, State Representative James Talarico, says Texans pay twice as much as Canadians for prescription drugs. His bill would change that. The bulk-importation program would result in savings of 60-to-70-percent for consumers and millions of dollars for state agencies on prescription drug costs.

White House Designates Fentanyl Laced With Tranquilizer An “Emerging Threat”
(Washington, DC) -- The White House is warning that an animal tranquilizer could worsen the nation’s ongoing drug crisis. The Biden administration on Wednesday declared that illicit fentanyl mixed with an animal tranquilizer known as xylazine [[ zai-luh-zeen ]] is an “emerging threat” and is linked to a rising number of fatal overdose deaths in the U.S. It’s the first time a presidential administration has formally labeled a drug as an emerging threat for the country.
