Tickets now on sale for Seguin Hispanic Chamber’s annual awards banquet
(Seguin) -- The Seguin-Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is inviting its members and the community to its 35th Annual Awards Banquet. The banquet is scheduled for Thursday night at the Seguin Coliseum.
Helping to plan for the event is newly appointed Chamber Chairwoman Christina Krueger. Although new to the current board of directors, Krueger is no stranger to the local Hispanic chamber. Krueger held the same position nearly 10 years ago. Taking over the reigns this time, however, is still pretty exciting for Krueger. Krueger says the future is bright and looks forward to taking the chamber in a new direction.
“I’m excited to come back helping in a leadership position here at the chamber. I look forward -- pre COVID -- it affected businesses in a lot of different ways. It affected the chamber drastically because we worked off of a lot of volunteers and COVID kind of changed everybody’s life. Coming back 10 years later, here I am again. I just want to get the chamber back on track, working with its members. We are excited.

Top teachers named in Navarro ISD
(Geronimo) -- A batch of Navarro ISD teachers is being recognized for its leadership role in the classroom.
The Teachers of the Year for the Navarro ISD have been announced for the 2023-2024 school year. Those top teachers include Haley Martinez of Navarro Elementary School: Shelby
Atchley, of Navarro Intermediate School; Jason Magin of Navarro
Junior High and Andrea While of Navarro High School.
The teachers were voted on by the faculty and staff at their respective campuses. Each will be officially recognized during tonight’s regular
meeting of the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees. All four were also presented with flowers, a candy bouquet and small gift.
Their recognition will continue at the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year Banquet in May.
IRS provides tips for last-minute filers
(Seguin) -- The April tax deadline has officially arrived. Today is the deadline to file those taxes.
If you are among those still working on that paperwork, the Internal Revenue Service today is reminding millions of last-minute tax filers that the agency has a variety of free tools and resources available on IRS.gov.
From tax preparation, answers to tax law questions, refund tracking, tax law research to business topics and more, they say IRS.gov has everything needed for taxpayers to file on time or get an easy, automatic sixmonth extension to file.
“Millions of taxpayers across the nation will be working on their tax returns during the final hours, and people should remember they have many ways to get last-minute help,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “We have a variety of free tools on IRS.gov that can help with basic tax law questions, provide free filing options, update refund status and even provide ways to request an extension for more time to file.”
For most of the nation, the tax deadline is April 15. For taxpayers who need an extension of time to file
their taxes, there are several options to get an automatic extension through Oct. 15. Although an extension grants extra time to file, it does not extend the obligation to pay taxes that are due today April 15, 2024.

Banquet, continued.
This is our 35th annual banquet so that’s just kind of that nostalgia of having an entity -- that throughout the years, I’ve seen the different changes within the chamber and the different things that it does for businesses so I’m excited just to kind of regroup. I want to definitely get back in touch with the community, the businesses and see what we need to do to help them in this new, I guess, business environment, I would say. Post COVID changed I think the way people operate their businesses and it’s a different workforce now so just kind of making those adjustments and we at the chamber will be making those adjustments as well,” said Krueger.
Being on hand for a 35 year milestone is even more special for Krueger. She says it’s important to applaud and recognize those who

continue to keep the community in business.
“We are going to see everything from corporate awards given to your local business man and business woman of the year. We are going to be recognizing some great companies and entities like in the humanitarian arena as well as recognizing just groups that are just making a change within our community. As we know, Seguin is growing consistently. We can look around and there are developments in every part of the city so we want to take this time to recognize those businesses that are operating within our community to make it prosperous and grow,” said Krueger.
Krueger says the night, of course, will not be all business but a fun way to enjoy the evening with others.
The chamber banquet will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Tickets to the event are $35 each and can be purchased from any board of director or at the Hispanic chamber office located at 971 W. Court St. They can also be picked up or delivered by calling 830-3723151.
“That evening, we are going to have a social hour beginning with just a brief little networking mixer. We are actually going to have an amazing speaker and it’s going to be Rudy Garza. He is the keynote speaker that night and he is the CEO and President figure with CPS Energy and so we are very excited. He’s going to give us some background information on energy across Texas which I think is something that we all want to talk about and like I said, that evening, we are also going to have dinner that’s going to be catered by Davila’s BBQ and we will have entertainment by the Seguin (High School) Mariachi Band as well,” said Krueger.
To avoid penalties and late fees, taxpayers who owe, should pay either their full tax bill or at least what they can afford to pay by today’s April 15th deadline.
The IRS estimates 19 million taxpayers will file for an automatic extension.
The IRS has already received more than 100 million tax returns, with tens of millions more expected to be filed by midnight.
“Delivering tax season is a massive undertaking, and we greatly appreciate people in many different areas working long hours to serve taxpayers as the tax deadline approaches,” Werfel added. “This effort reaches far beyond the IRS and includes hard-working tax professionals, software providers, the payroll community as well as our colleagues in the state tax agencies. Their work helping taxpayers makes a difference.”
For those needing last-minute help, taxpayers will find filing information for individuals as well as businesses and self-employed on IRS.gov. For last-minute filers looking for free resources, IRS Direct File remains an option as does IRS Free File. Anyone can use IRS Free File to submit an extension of time to file regardless of their income.
The IRS also encourages all taxpayers to file electronically. They also ask them to choose direct deposit to avoid refund delays. Filing on paper can significantly delay a refund. They say tax software helps individuals steer clear of mistakes by doing the math. It also guides people through each section of their tax return using a question-and-answer format.
Those mailing paper tax forms are also reminded that the envelope must be stamped with today’s date. They encourage to check with your respective post office to ensure the right stamp and deadline for drop-off.
TLU Baseball Shuts Out #14 Trinity Behind Gem From Beard
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball shut out the rival No. 14 Trinity Tigers, 5-0, behind a complete game shutout from Brendan Beard (Coldspring/ColdspringOakhurst) Friday night at Trinity Baseball Field in San Antonio. The Bulldogs (19-11, 8-5 SCAC) extended their win streak to eight games, scoring five runs on eight hits with Beard’s gem on the mound.
Beard, last week’s SCAC Pitcher of the Week and a candidate to win it again this week, was stellar from start to finish in his second consecutive complete game. Beard would strand 12 Tigers base runners in his shutout effort that saw him toss 161 pitches - 100 for strikes - striking out four and walking a trio to improve to 5-0 on the season. Over his last two starts, Beard has thrown 19 innings, allowing one run on eight hits while striking out 13 on 286 pitches.
San Antonio native Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial) went 1-for-5 with three RBI, while Chance Greene (Round Rock/Stony Point) went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Carson Draehn (Brenham/Brenham) went 1-for-3 with the other RBI.
The Bulldogs took advantage of two Trinity errors in the first to get on the board with two runs behind an RBI groundout from Peavy and an RBI single from Draehn.
The two teams would trade zeroes until the eighth inning that saw the Bulldogs add three insurance runs. An RBI single from Vasquez extended the TLU lead to 3-0 before an Adam Peavy two-RBI single brought the game to its final score.
Texas Lutheran and Trinity will square off in game two as the Bulldogs will go for the series win over the Tigers on Saturday at 2 PM. The game will be streamed on Trinity’s Tiger Network. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

Study Finds Link Between Teen Gaming And Psychosis (Montreal)
-- A new study suggests that teenagers who spend too much on computers and video games may turn psychotic. A new paper published in JAMA Psychiatry says researchers studied over 12-hundred participants who spent a lot of time online as teenagers and found they were up to seven-percent more likely than their peers to have a psychotic experience, such as delusions or hallucinations, before age 23. The authors noted, however, that the link between video games and psychosis could be explained by other factors, including social exclusion and lower socioeconomic status.
Race
May
Play Role In Dementia
(Undated) -- Older Black Americans are nearly twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia compared to white Americans, research shows. It’s not clear what causes the discrepancy, but a new study in The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association suggests racial discrimination may play a role. There’s no direct link, but people who reported more instances of discrimination in middle age developed more markers for dementia later in life.
VP Harris Talks Abortion Rights In Arizona (Tucson, AZ) -- Vice President Kamala Harris is in Tucson, Arizona today after the state supreme court upheld a near-total ban on abortions that was put in place in the 18-hundreds. She spoke at an event focusing on abortion rights and the Biden administration’s efforts to keep the procedure legal. Harris told the crowd the fight for abortion is a fight for freedom, criticizing the ban for outlawing abortion before most women know they’re pregnant, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Harris added that she and President Biden trust women to make their own medical decisions, and the government shouldn’t get to make them for other people. Arizona is considered a battleground state in this year’s election, which President Biden narrowly won in 2020.
Gov. Whitmer Slams Trump Over Abortion Stance (Lansing, MI) -- Abortion will be a top issue for voters in the upcoming presidential election. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer told NBC’s Meet The Press there’s a real possibility of a national abortion ban if Donald Trump is elected president. The Democrat said she believes the issue will motivate Americans to show up to the polls in November. Her comments come as the former president recently said he would not sign a national abortion ban into law and it should be left up to states to decide abortion laws.
GRMC received the 2024 Women’s Choice Award for Top 100 Hospitals for Patient Experience.
