GRMC Urgent Care Center opens in Clear Spings urgent care center is Dr. Brett Earnest who is a primary care physician and he is new to our group and he serves as our medical director for that facility and he just brings a lot of knowledge and foresight to primary care services and is a really good addition to our group," said Montez. Montez says whether a walk-in or appointment, the facility offers a full range of urgent care services. "We offer some in house rapid lab tests as well as x-rays so you have those people (who) drop things on their foot or they have maybe a little fracture or something that they fall and they need to get x-rayed, we can do that," said Montez. Of course like any medical facility during this COVID-19 pandemic, Montez says all necessary precautions are being taken at this time to keep everyone safe. She says the facility is also fully equipped as other primary physicians to screen for the virus.

Photo Courtesy By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Clear Springs) -- Skipping over any formal ribbon cutting, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center officials say they are pleased to announce their newly opened urgent care facility north of Seguin. Guadalupe Regional at Clear Springs Urgent Care officially opened its doors to patients two weeks ago. The facility is located in the heart of Clear Springs located off of State Highway 46. Tasha Montez, the CEO of Guadalupe Regional Medical Group, says

the urgent care facility is GRMC's first branch off campus. She says the facility provides care for the entire family. "An urgent care center is a bridge and an available access point for patients. So, we are an extension of primary care and other specialists that we work closely with because the urgent care is obviously meant to bridge the gap between their offices as well as the ER so it's those patients who aren't as emergent that need to go to the ER but maybe their primary care physicians can't get them in that day or they are after hours so that's how we bridge the gap. We also have next door to our

"We work very closely with and we follow the same process as our primary care physicians do here in town. For example, we had a patient today who called the urgent care and said I have these symptoms and I think that I need to be seen so the patient came to the urgent care center. We brought the patient back. All of our staff used the appropriate PPE and processes that we've established. We did the preliminary testing. It came out negative for the flu and so that is when our provider then called our COVID physician on call and that discussion was had and it was determined that that patient did need to be tested and so that patient came to the hospital to get tested. So, we are following the same steps and it actually worked out very well. It's a good collaborative relationship that our primary care physician's and urgent care center have with our COVID team of physicians here at the hospital. So, it's a good continuity of care. The processes have been worked out and we can replicate the process," said Montez. See URGENT CARE, page 3

GRMC officials continue to develop defenses against virus

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Guadalupe Regional Medical Center continues to remain in a heightened state of preparation against any potential surge of COVID-19. That's according to GRMC officials who say the fight against the infectious disease is far from over. Robert Haynes, CEO for Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, says although the number of positive cases is not as high as in other parts of the state and country, the battle for our area will be to continue to keep that number down. "From an operation standpoint, certainly, we are statistically doing much less than we have done in a normal month. But what I would like to comment on is that is seems as if the social distancing and the activities that have taken place to prevent this from spreading are being effective because in our area anyway, we have not seen a large surge or growth of the type of symptoms that we would be looking for. So we thank the community for that. We also want to thank the businesses in the community that have helped us with personal protective equipment. That really has been outstanding. So, from an operation standpoint, we are ready and available," said Haynes. Rhonda Unruh, vice president of quality for

GRMC, says defense against the virus has even been enhanced inside the walls of the local hospital. She says this week, GRMC implemented universal masking for all of its oncampus staff. "Operationally, we haven't changed much in terms of our visitor restrictions or screening process but we did add in universal masking for our employees and our providers this week and that was done in response to the CDC's latest guidelines last week encouraging the public to begin wearing cloth face coverings to prevent a symptomatic spread of COVID. So in our discussions as a health care organization, we are still operating business, social distancing and sometimes it's not very easy in a workplace setting so with the CDC guidelines coming out with that new recommendation and with the consideration of how we run our operation on a day to day basis, we thought it was a good practice for us to go ahead and begin here and it really has been accepted readily by our staff and by our providers that come in here to see patients and we feel that this is part of our effort to not only keep our patients safe but also our staff because they do come in here. They are part of that essential workforce and we want to make sure they are protected," said Unruh. Now despite the defense that the hospital has taken against COVID-19, Haynes hopes that

these preventative measures or restrictions don't prevent the people from coming to GRMC if they need to. "The COVID emergency is really an emergency event because of the mass amount of a surge that you may get that attacks the resources that you have. We are not facing that. I would tell you that if you think you need medical attention, then you should seek medical attention. If it was worthy of visiting an urgent care in the past, it is worthy of visiting it right now. Same thing certainly for an emergency room or your physician. If you have a question about visiting your physician's office, you call your physician. But anything that is emergent or semi-emergent, that's why we are here, 24/7 and this year, 366 days," said Haynes. Unruh agrees with Haynes and says if anything, residents should feel more comfortable about all these safety measures that have been put into place. "Some of the processes that we have put into place are there to protect patients. So we want to make sure that patients know that if they need us, we are here and we have processes in place to make sure that they are protected from any type of exposure, if that is their concern, because it is better for them to seek their healthcare rather than delay it in

many cases," said Unruh. While it is unknown whether a potential surge for the virus will make its way into the area, Unruh believes that any victory against COVID-19 begins with each of us. "I want to still encourage the community to still follow the guidance from our local officials and our governmental officials at the state and federal level because we are all in this together and for us to continue to be successful with flattening the curb and making sure we are not experiencing what some of these other hot spots are. We really need to continue to have good social distancing practices and respect our stay at home, work safely orders and make sure that we are practicing very good hand hygiene at home, at work wherever we are. We still need to continue to live our life but we need to do it a little bit differently in the current situation," said Unruh. In addition to the distribution of masks, each employee that enters the hospital is also screened for temperature, for respiratory symptoms or for inquiries on travel. GRMC officials say they currently have adequate supplies of personal protective equipment to support this practice and thank the community for helping to make it happen.

Burglar apprehended inside area pediatrician's office County Sheriff's Office, says Alec Cardenas, 22, was arrested earlier this month after he was found inside a local pediatrician's office.

Alec Cardenas By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Geronimo) -- An area burglar is behind bars after being caught in action. Lt. Clint Garza, of the Guadalupe

Garza says the arrest was made just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, April 4 at Geronimo Village Pediatrics located at 121 Dennis Drive in Geronimo. Garza says the deputies were dispatched to the pediatrician's office following the activation of a burglary alarm. "While enroute, the deputies were informed that the business owner was monitoring the interior

surveillance cameras remotely and could see an individual moving around inside the building. The responding deputies arrived and established a perimeter around the business. They observed glass broken on an exterior door where the suspect had made entry. The business owner was still monitoring the cameras and was able to assist the deputies on scene with providing an accurate real time location for the suspect inside the building. The deputies located the suspect quickly and he was taken into custody without incident," said Garza.

During the investigation, it was found that Cardenas had caused an estimated $1000 in damage to the exterior and interior of the business. Due to the accurate information being provided by the business owner and the quick response of the deputies, Garza says the suspect was unable to exit with any property and was apprehended quickly, and safely. Cardenas was arrested for burglary of a building and criminal mischief. He remains in the Guadalupe County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond.

GRMC branches out with new urgent care center

URGENT CARE, continued from page 1

Montez says residents are invited to rely on the new urgent care service for all of their medical needs and believes it will be a major source of healthcare for anyone in the area.

"I just think it serves another area of access for our patients. We definitely identified that area on 46 as a big growth area and a big growth opportunity. Again, urgent care is not meant to be a primary care physician's office so urgent care and we definitely stand by that idea of we are a bridge between

their primary care physicians and we are here as an extension of them to help our patients and the individuals of this community get the right care that they need at the right place. So, our patients that are seen at the urgent care, their information is sent back to their primary care physician

so that their primary care physician can know that they've been treated and what's going, again, for the continuity of care for those patients," said Montez.

This instalment in the series focuses on the Seguin, Navarro, and Marion powerlifting programs. The University Interschollastic League (UIL) is not the governing body of high school powerlifting. The Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) and Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association (THSWPA) sanction events and award championships in that sport. Most of the boys teams around the state completed their regional meets before competition was suspended, but Seguin's Division I Region 5 meet in Weslaco was cancelled. The THSPA initially rescheduled all postponed regional meets for April 2, and the state meet for May 2, but those events have since

Hernandez was the top lifter in the Super Heavy Weight class with a total 1,745 lbs. He squatted 705, bench pressed 470, and dead-lifted 570. Reyna earned the regional crown in the 190-lb class with lifts totaling 1,435 lbs. Reyna squatted 575, benched 385, and dead-lifted 475. Deleon took first place in the 181-lb class with a total of 1,510 lbs. He cleared 580 in the squat, 350 on the bench, and 580 in the dead lift. Coronavirus Cases Over 582,000 As Of Monday Night

Wyoming Reports First Coronavirus-Related Death

(Undated) -- The coronavirus continues to spread around the U.S. Over 23-thousand-600 people had died from the respiratory illness as of Monday night. There were more than 582-thousand confirmed cases across the nation. New York accounted for roughly a third of those cases alone as it approached 200-thousand. On a positive note, the number of Americans who have recovered from the disease surpassed 44-thousand.

(Buffalo, WY) -- Wyoming is the last state to report a coronavirus-related death. Governor Mark Gordon announced the news via Twitter and says the resident had underlying health conditions. He says the state's first death due to the virus "serves as a grim reminder of the importance of following public health orders." The least populous U.S. state, Wyoming also has the fewest number of confirmed cases with 270.

Trump Says Country Could Reopen Ahead Of Schedule (Washington, DC) -- It appears efforts to get the economy going are heading in the right direction. President Trump told a White House briefing they are close to completing a plan to reopen the country, adding it could be done ahead of schedule. Trump says the plan, along with guidelines, will give Americans confidence to start returning to normal life. The commander-in-chief has been adamant about getting the economy rolling again as soon as possible. He has recently said America "wasn't built to be shut down."

Los Angeles Mayor Brings Update On COVID-19 Fight (Los Angeles, CA) -- Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti says folks in the city are doing their part to slow the spread of coronavirus. In a Monday afternoon press conference, Garcetti noted the 113 new confirmed cases of the respiratory illness represent an increase of less than three-percent from the day before. He said that single-digit percentage increase is a good sign, but he pointed out cases are still going up. It's the eighth day in a row that the rate has increased by single-digit percentage points. However, Garcetti also said there were 25 new deaths in Los Angeles County, bringing the total to 320.
