(Seguin) -- A special blessing has been added to Seguin’s Squirrel Trail Program. On Sunday, the congregation at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in downtown Seguin officially introduced Father Pecan to the local community.

Father Pecan marks the 11th squirrel to be introduced as part of the Seguin Commission on the Arts’ community wide project that features the larger than life stone squirrels. Each squirrel is sponsored publicly then painted and placed at various locations around town.

Leading the unveiling Sunday morning at the corner of River and Nolte Streets was Stephen Shortess, the senior priest at St. Andrew’s. Shortess says Father Pecan did not disappoint leaving everyone with a good first impression.

“And when that black cloth came off and to see this shiny vibrant squirrel that was artistically beautiful but also matched our church traditions and to see the humor and the laughter on peoples’ faces, it just brought a lot of joy to my heart and I think also people from the community who came to see our unveiling as well,” said Shortess.

Search continues for suspect in hit and run accident

(Guadalupe County) -- A reward is still being offered for information involving a hit and run accident that left a man dead along State Highway 123 North.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) says the public’s help is needed in the fatal hit-and-run crash investigation that killed a pedestrian, Noah Calderon.

A $3,000 reward is being made available for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect.

State troopers say the fatal crash occurred on Saturday, March 30

between 12:30 and 1:15 a.m. on State Highway 123 near the Guadalupe and Hays countyline.

Troopers say based on roadway evidence, Calderon was struck by a gray vehicle in the southbound lane of SH 123.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and render aid and is currently being sought by investigators for questioning.

Troopers are reaching out to local auto body shops in hopes that they might find some clues to help with the case.

Anyone, including those body shop workers, should reach out to the agency if they think they have helpful information.

The family posted on social media that Calderon was walking back to San Marcos from the Full Moon Saloon.

It states that family members not only want justice but they want to help provide some closure for the two year old son that he left behind.

Search continues for man in Canyon Lake

(Seguin) -- The search continues today for a 19-yearold man who went missing on Canyon Lake.

Officials with the Comal County Sheriff’s Office say at around 7 p.m. Sunday, they along with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens were dispatched to Canyon Lake near Overlook Park for a male who had gone under water and had not resurfaced.

The man has been identified as Roiner Alejandro Rojas Pereira of San Antonio. Pereira reportedly was floating on a tube and drifted toward the water intake near the Canyon Lake Dam.

At some point, they say he became separated from the tube. Witnesses said the victim started to wave and yell for help. One of those witnesses started to swim from shore in an attempt to rescue him but the man eventually went

under the water and did not resurface.

Meanwhile, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens, Hays (SMART) Dive Team and Comal County Sheriff’s Office Deputies continue to search.

Shortess says folks won’t have any trouble spotting Father Pecan and hopes that when folks do stop by, that they too will know his sole purpose.

“He’s wearing a black cassock with a white surplice and a priest stole. It’s a red stole so red in our tradition would mean Holy Spirit of God which right now in the church, we are kind of hearing the stories of Pentecost before we get to the actual celebration of Pentecost and it kind of means that we are a church that is going out into the world to spread some hope and some love and some good news and that’s really what we hope Father Pecan is all about and what we hope our church is all about and we hope our community can come over to the town of Seguin or from the surrounding (area) and see Father Pecan and know that we are a church that loves them and that wants to spread God’s love to them as well,” said Shortess.

Shortess says although the church did not set out to create a Father Pecan, they are grateful to Artist Robin Walker for providing him with a sense of humor.

“I think Father Pecan kind of started as a little bit of a humorous joke and then, me and Robin got together and then a little bit of levity became a reality and it worked out well and Father Pecan comes with a mission statement. If you read our plaque, it says ‘He comes to pray for a town full of nuts.’ We just thought God somewhere must have a sense of humor and we have a sense of humor and this world needs to laugh a little bit more and we just kind of made that vision again a reality for the community -- we hope, we pray,” said Shortess.

Painting a squirrel for the trail program, however, is nothing new for Walker. In fact, Shortess says Walker’s other squirrel is just across the street.

“Robin Walker is a church member and to quote her,

she also painted the squirrel that is actually in the town square. I believe that is the Guadalupe River Squirrel and she says ‘well, my other squirrel needed a squirrel to talk to so I painted Father Pecan’ which I thought it was cute and funny as well,” said Shortess.

Father Pecan, again, is just the latest in a list of squirrels that have found a home around town. Shortess says he hopes the momentum for this project continues one squirrel at a time.

“I think the Spirit of Joy was the first church and their squirrel, I believe, is named Joy and I think they were an inspiration to us and hopefully, we will be an inspiration to other churches or other places. There’s a lot going on in the world but the world is still full of beautiful people with beautiful talents and if we can get together as a community and do something as relatively small as adding these beautiful squirrel statues that speak to art and speak to community, image what else we can do. Maybe this is the first step in motivating and building a better community for all of us,” said Shortess.

The city program currently has around 15 more squirrels that are scheduled to be unveiled over this next year.

The opportunity to sponsor the next batch of stone squirrels is still available. The cost is $2,500 per squirrel. Each sponsor is responsible for covering the cost of the artist that he or she personally selects to paint the squirrel.

Clark, Ouellette Combine to Sweep SCAC Weekly Honors

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran sophomore Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek) and senior Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/ Gregory-Portland) combined to sweep the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) weekly honors after helping the Bulldogs to a sweep over Centenary and 25-2 start to the season.

Clark collects the SCAC Hitter of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks after an impressive week where she batted .700 (7-for-10) with two RBIs and four runs scored to go along with a walk.

The highlight of the weekend for the Montgomery, Texas native was her 14 stolen bases in three games, including her seven stolen base effort in the second game of the series. Clark set a new program and SCAC record and tied the NCAA Division-III record for stolen bases in a single game with seven. Clark became the tenth player in NCAA history to steal seven bases in a game with eight stolen bases in a game by Barton College’s (D-II) Jessica McFadden being the single-game record across all three NCAA divisions. Clark leads all of NCAA Softball with 66 stolen bases this season and has already matched her 66 stolen base season from a year ago, which led all of college softball in 2023.

Ouellette won her lone start last week, throwing the first solo no-hitter of her career and the 36th in TLU softball history on April 12 against the Ladies in six innings. The senior right-hander struck out one lone batter and walked one over six innings, throwing 50 of her 75 pitches for strikes. Ouellette sat down the final eight batters she faced on Friday. The no-hitter is the third that Ouellette has been a part of in her career at Texas Lutheran.

Both Bulldogs earned their third career SCAC weekly honors. Texas Lutheran has swept three of the SCAC’s ten weekly honors and a TLU player or pitcher has won the honors four of the ten weeks. A Bulldog player has won SCAC Hitter of the Week three of the last four weeks.

Texas Lutheran continues their final regular season homestand as they welcome the Trinity Tigers to Ed Kruse Stadium on Friday, April 19.

Patsy A. “Pat” Harborth, age 72 of Boerne, formerly of Seguin/Geronimo, passed away on March 21, 2024. Pat was born in Seguin, Texas on February 5, 1952, to Norma (Bose) and Marvin Harborth. She was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in San Antonio.

Anesthesiologist Found Guilty Of Tampering With IV Bags (Dallas, TX) -- A federal jury in Dallas, Texas, has convicted an anesthesiologist of tampering with IV bags resulting in several medical emergencies. The jury returned the verdict today for Dr. Raynaldo Ortiz, who is now facing up to life in prison. Ortiz was convicted on ten counts of injecting nerve-blocking drugs into the bags, which were then used on patients at Baylor Scott & White’s SurgiCare in North Dallas in August of 2022. Four patients undergoing low-risk cosmetic procedures were rushed to the hospital after suffering cardiac emergencies. Ortiz is implicated, but not charged, in the death of a fellow anesthesiologist that same year, who took one of the bags home to rehydrate herself.

Northwell Health Paying 1M For Wrongfully COVID Test Charges (New York, NY) -- New York’s largest healthcare network is agreeing to pay one-million dollars for wrongfully charging for COVID tests. AG Letitia [[ lah-tee-sha ]] James says Northwell Health posted signs at three of its emergency departments in New York City and on Long Island, deceptively advertising them as testing sites between March 2020 and March 2021. Patients were then billed standard ER charges, despite simply getting a COVID test. James says Northwell Health has refunded patients around 400-thousand dollars and will pay 650-thousand dollars in penalties.

Vaccine Shows Promise (United Kingdom) -- A new vaccine for chlamydia is delivering promising results. Researchers in Denmark and the U.K. say early phases of their experiments found the vaccine is safe for humans. There’s currently no vaccine for the sexually transmitted disease, which nearly two-millionpeople contracted in the U.S. in 2022. Scientists say they hope the next phase of their research will answer more questions about asymptomatic infections.

Missouri Has Highest Number Of People Who Sleep With Their Dogs (Jefferson City, MO) -- A survey by MattressNextDay says Missouri has the highest percentage of residents in the country who sleep with their dogs. The study of two-thousand-people showed Missouri ranks number one at 89 percent. Overall, over 74 percent of Americans let their dogs sleep with them, as opposed to 55 percent of cat owners who share their bed. Experts say that though there are emotional advantages of cosleeping with pets, it’s also essential to take hygiene factors into account. They recommend changing your sheets once a week.

Registration Open for City Summer Day Camp

Applications are available for the Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program (C.E.A.P.) provided by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs through the CCSCT. The program will help low-income consumers reduce their utility bills. There is also assistance available through the Low Income Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). Volunteer Van Drivers Needed

Guadalupe County Veteran Services Office is in great need of volunteer van drivers. Even those who can only commit to one day per month. Volunteers will drive local veterans who have no transportation to their VA medical appointments in San Antonio. To volunteer, call 830-303-4188 ext. 1249.

Precious Life Services is accepting new clients who may need help with Anger Management, Parenting Skills, Christian Counseling, Group and Family Therapy, Anxiety and Depression, etc. Appointments are available in-office, by Zoom or Teleconference by calling 830-372-5980.

Free Accredited Adult Homeschool Program

The Life Changing Church is now offering a Free Accredited Homeschool Program for adults wanting to earn their high school diploma. It is a self-paced, no classes to attend program. You work around your schedule and at the end of the program you will receive an accredited diploma that is acceptable for college. Tutors are available at no charge. Salvation Army Office

The Seguin Unit Salvation Army office is located at 205 North King Street. The office is open to receive requests for assistance weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Volunteers Needed

The Guadalupe Valley Young Marines need volunteers. They promote a healthy, drug-free program and need males, 19 years and up who would like to see the program grow by contributing time to help future citizens, boys and girls 8 to 18. La Trinidad Blessing Box - Food Pantry

The La Trinidad United Methodist Church invites you to “Take what you need, Bring what you can, and above all be Blessed!” by its Blessing Box Food Pantry located at the corner of the church at 306 E. Gonzales St. in Seguin. The Blessing Box is filled with items to help those in need.
