Local school districts talk senior graduation

(Seguin) – With the closing of schools now in order, hearts are, no doubt, with the members of the Senior Class of 2020. This, of course, was the year they had been waiting for. It was their time to shine.

Gutierrez says despite all that has evolved over the last couple of months, the Seguin ISD is committed more than ever of finding the best solution possible for this batch of deserving students.

However, after learning the news that Governor Greg Abbott had ordered the closing of schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020, local school districts have now been forced to mobilize. Not only do they have to come up with a plan to help wrap up a shortened and unforgettable school year, but they also must help answer the question, “what about graduation?”

“It feels like the rug was just yanked from under them and all of these special moments are not there. As far as graduation, we had started to outline some preliminary options as far as what we could (do) to avoid going a virtual route. We really wanted a live, in person event. Now, what I do want the community to know is to please be patient.

We are told that the education commissioner is going to talk about graduation with superintendents (this week) so we will learn more. It may be more directive and it may come down and say that ‘school districts will need to do this for graduation’ or they may give us some flexibility so right now, our plans are on hold until we can hear from the education commissioner and again, we want to do everything we can within the limits to still make sure that this occasion is special and so we are keeping that in mind,” said Gutierrez.

School districts react to governor’s orders to keep school doors closed

(Seguin) -- "Leaning is open!"

Those are the words taken straight off the social media page of Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez who posted the message after announcing Texas Governor Greg Abbott's executive order to keep Texas public school doors closed through the end of the 20192020 school year. Much of the same sentiments were also shared by school districts officials in the Navarro and the Marion Independent School Districts.

Despite his decision to soon begin the reopening of businesses throughout the state, Abbott shared that by keeping schools closed, “it prioritized the health and safety of the millions of public school and private school students plus their teachers and administration.”

While some students, educators and parents were not surprised by the Friday afternoon news, others say they still hung onto optimism that classes would at least resume if not for a couple of weeks--weeks that would help tie up all of the loose ends -- things such as allowing kids to pack up their desks and say goodbye to teachers and friends.

Gutierrez says learning that the students would not be returning made for an emotionally tough day and expressed his thoughts to the Seguin Daily News.

"My initial response is that it’s devasting as an educator who cares deeply about our students and we want to ensure that they are growing academically and the fact that we are not going to be able to have them in our classrooms everyday is really sad news and I know that I speak for all of the staff in the Seguin ISD, the thousand plus employees in our district. I do, however, have a lot of appreciation for the governor’s actions and I

respect his decision. I think it is a wise decision as it is still early in these stages of the coronavirus as the number of cases in the state continue to increase. It is a very safe decision that he has made in his plans to slowly reopen the economy. There is still a lot of questions that I have as a superintendent and I know many questions that the staff and parents have as far as what’s next? What does it mean now for end of year awards? What does it mean now for the library books that my daughter has in her room? What does it mean for graduation?

There’s still a lot of questions that are being raised and we are going to be working in the coming days to make sure we develop a plan,” said Gutierrez. “ Gutierrez says his social media message “learning is open” is vital in moving forward. He says the Seguin ISD is proud of all the families who have continued to learn at home. He says the level of engagement between the families and the teachers has been tremendous.

“The governor has announced that schools are closed. It does not mean that the learning has stopped.

It does not mean you can’t reach your teacher or your campus principal. We are all still here for you and the learning is going to continue until we announce when the online or distance remote

learning will stop. So the schools are closed but it’s so important for parents to know that the learning has to continue so that your students are prepared to advance to the next grade level and it’s also important to know that for the work that is being completed at home, whether it’s through an online platform or utilizing the hard paper packet, students are going to receive credit for the learning so it is important for students to be participating in the learning so they can receive credit,” said Gutierrez.

Navarro ISD Superintendent Dee Carter says she too understands the governor’s position and wasn’t surprised by his latest actions to close the classrooms for the remainder of the school year.

“I’m sad. I’m not surprised at all because given the fact that the virus is still very active, I was having a difficult time seeing how we could even think about putting the number of children in classrooms that we do and make it have a safe environment even in May so I can’t say that I was surprised at all. I was still hopeful that we might get at least a couple of weeks in May to get back and have a little bit of a normal ending to the school year but I think the governor made the right call and so I’m not certainly not in disagreement with his decision. I think it’s the safest thing to do,”

said Carter.

Carter says despite what is happening in the world, she is proud of what the Navarro ISD has managed to accomplish over these last few weeks and looks forward to maintaining that momentum through the final day of remote instruction.

“I’m just in complete awe of what our teachers have done. I think, not to brag, but I think that Navarro from what I hear from a lot of superintendents around the state in some of the Zoom meetings with the commissioner and Zoom meetings with the Region 20 superintendents, some of them are still really struggling with providing continuing instruction and our teachers just geared up, made a tremendous paradigm shift and went right to work. They are providing a high level of instruction for our students and I’m very pleased as well that our students and our families are as engaged as they are,” said Carter.

Carter, who will retire at the end of the school year, says the 20192020 school year will be a year in her career to remember and is most grateful for helping to lead her Navarro families through this page in history.

Gutierrez says the closure of school due to the COVID-19 pandemic has also definitely been

a learning and evolving experience for him personally. He says it has certainly changed his position as superintendent and feels his role has really transformed over the last five to six weeks and has all been rolled into one where he is leading alongside government officials in making sure they are taking precautions to ensure the community is safe and that as a school system, they are working to meet the needs of students beyond just providing them learning platforms.

“We’re having to change day by day based on decisions being made at the state level or local level or things that are not working within a certain part of the school district and people are understanding and not one complaint has come and it certainly means so much to me as the superintendent and I do believe that people in this community really do care about our students, our future, and I appreciate just the outpouring of support,” said Gutierrez.

Marion ISD Superintendent Kelly Lindholm also shares disappointment yet understanding with the governor’s decision. In a written statement, Lindholm says “the COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented circumstances for us to navigate. It has forced us to create new solutions and helped us to forge new pathways we would have only imagine just a few short weeks ago.”

District officials like those in Seguin and Navarro also encouraged families to stay tuned for answers to their many questions. They also ask that families in all districts continue to monitor their emails, district websites, social media sites plus media outlets such as the Seguin Daily News for additional information.

That was one for the history books.’And it is, but right now, it really hurts and it is very sad that our seniors can’t have all of the banquets and all of the recognition events and all of the fun that seniors normally have during the spring semester of their senior year. So, I feel just really, awful about that. We are going to do the best we can to

provide for the recognition that our seniors have earned over the years and over the course of this year,” said Carter.

While a graduation ceremony is still on the table for many districts, most cannot forget the loss and disappointment of other memorable events such as prom, senior nights, and spring sports. Again, once a graduation plan is outlined for each respective school district, officials say those plans will be announced to senior families as soon as possible.

Area spring sports done for the season (Austin) - Seguin, Navarro, and Marion High School's spring athletics seasons are o ff i c i a l l y over after a decision made Friday by the University Interscholastic League regarding the COVID19 pandemic.

With the announcement from Governor Greg Abbott that all Texas schools are to remain closed to in-person learning for the remainder of this school year, and in an effort to help protect the health and safety of Texans, the UIL is canceling all remaining 20192020 spring activities and state championships.

The UIL says that further details are forthcoming, and will be posted on the UIL website and social media accounts.

“ O u r s t a ff h a d b e e n w o r k i n g hard on plans to resume activities this spring, but without schools in session, interscholastic activities cannot continue,” said UIL Executive Director D r.

Bettie Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, who died in 2012.

She was also preceded by her parents, infant sister, Paula Kay, and brother, Paul Smith, Jr.; sister-in-law Eleanor Bauer Michelson; and brother-in-law Fred Schmidt.

Bettie Jo (Smith) Bauer Bettie Jo (Smith) Bauer, age 87 of Seguin, died on April 17, 2020. She was born February 12, 1933, in Seguin, Texas to Paul J. (Pete) and Frankie Smith.

Bettie Jo graduated from Seguin High School in 1949 and from Texas A & I in 1952.

She later took graduate courses at St. Mary’s University and SWTSU. She was employed in the Personnel Department of Celanese Corp. at Bishop, Texas, from, January, 1952, until June, 1953, when her husband, Bubba, graduated from A & I.Bubba entered the Army and Bettie accompanied him to El Paso. When Bubba was sent to Japan in December, 1953, she returned to Seguin. Bubba was discharged from the Army in June, 1955, and also returned to Seguin.

She is survived by three children and eight grandchildren. John Bauer and wife Beth and their daughters, Kaitlyn and Bailey live in LaCoste. Bill Bauer and wife Maryann and his children, Sebastian, Elias and Clara live in Austin. Daughter Nancy and her husband, John Gueldner, and their sons Pete, Otto and Lucas live in Seguin. Bettie is also survived by sister-in-law, Besty Bauer Schmidt, of Austin.

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, private services will be held at St. James Catholic Church.

Private interment will follow later at San Geronimo Cemetery.

Duies and Virginia met in 1972 and married soon after, having been together 47 plus years, where they were each other’s best friend. They became a beautiful blended family of eight children.

She was an active member of The Country Church in Marion where she loved volunteering at the “Attic” with her friends.

Virginia was very creative and enjoyed arts and crafts with her children and grandchildren.

During hunting season, she was either in the back yard in her blind or in the kitchen making sausage that she harvested with her sons and grandsons.

She loved out hunting every other member of the family, especially her son Ray. Virginia was known for her wedding cakes that she baked for many friends and family members. The perfect hostess, she loved throwing parties no matter what the occasion.

She remained there until January, 1964, shortly before her first child was born.

She retired and became a “professional grandmother” in 1995 when her first grandchild was born.

Virginia grew up in Nordheim, and will be remembered as the Valedictorian of her graduating class of 1961 at Nordheim High School. She also served as treasurer of her Senior Class.

Virginia served as a girl scout leader, a Jones Creek 4H leader with her husband, she also served as 4H Treasurer at state level, was Tops Leader of the Seguin Tops groups, and was a member of the Go Texan Committee.

Bettie was employed by Texas Lutheran College as secretary to the President from December, 1953, until Fall of 1959 when she became an instructor in the Business Department at TLC.

After her last child entered school, she worked at various part-time jobs but always retained flexibility so that she could give priority to her children.

Virginia was born on September 14, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas to Alameda Diana (Flessner) and Ottmar Milton Vogel.

Virginia Mae “JuJu” Jahns Virginia Mae “JuJu” Jahns, age 76 of Seguin, passed away on April 13, 2020.

Her favorite thing was traveling with the family, especially to Cloud Croft, New Mexico. Except for the one time she called home to Duies that she didn’t make it to Cloud Croft, but somehow ended up with her daughter and some of her grandkids in beautiful Bozeman, Montana!!

She is preceded in death by her parents and sons, Robbie Jahns and Nathan Jahns.

There were times when things were not always easy, but Virginia always made it work.

She always said, “We may not have it together, but together we have it all”.

She was so loved and will be missed by so many, but she will remain in our hearts and minds forever.

Evelyn Hoffman Evelyn Hoffman, age 99, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, entered Heaven Easter morning, April 12, 2020 in Seguin, Texas at sunrise.

Evelyn was born to Adela Wehman Haverlah and Bennie Haverlah on December, 17, 1920 at the family farm near Lenz, Texas.

She and Werner Hoffman were married on March 10, 1942 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Karnes City, Texas. They made Karnes City their home where they raised their 2 daughters and became involved in their community. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was also a current member of Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin, Texas.

Evelyn spent her years as a homemaker, and as an employee of Riedel Supply and Karnes County Savings and Loan. She also served as an agent for Hermann Sons Life for 26 years. In her later years she dedicated her time to volunteering at her church, local nursing homes, her daughter’s flower shop and of course could always be found working in her yard which she took great pride in.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, her parents, and sister, Bernice Magel. Evelyn’s survivors include her daughters, Darlene Rhodes

Emmett Edgar Engelke Emmett Edgar Engelke, age 80 of New Braunfels, passed away on April 14, 2020. Emmett was born

Emmett was a 1957 graduate of Seguin High School. He attended Texas Lutheran College and graduated from Southwest Texas State.

Emmett was a longtime employee of the State Comptroller ’s Department.

He will be remembered as a man of strong Christian faith and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He enjoyed hunting and playing a good game of poker with his friends.

Emmett is preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Dolores Toney Engelke, his parents, his step father Max Wommack, Sr. and his brother-inlaw, Ronald Theodore Toney.

White House Guidelines Set Reopening In Three Phases

(Washington, DC) -- President Trump is laying out plans to start opening the economy from coronavirus shutdowns. He explains the White House's plans will be in three phases that will give states step-by-step guidelines to get back to business. He noted that some states will begin to reopen sooner than others. He added that the economy can get restarted again in a "safe and structured" fashion.

(Washington, DC) -- The White House is recommending three phases for states to reopen from coronavirus shutdowns. The guidelines recommend states only start opening after weeks of downward trends in coronavirus patients or folks with similar symptoms. The phases will slowly allow healthy people to stop sheltering, while maintaining some social distancing practices. Eventually, schools can reopen and venues will be able to operate with some distancing protocols. The final phase would lift stay-at-home requirements for folks who are considered vulnerable. At that point, there won't be restrictions for people going to work either.

Trump: Some States Could Start Reopening Immediately (Washington, DC) -- President Trump says some states could start the process of opening back up immediately. He says the states will have to meet requirements outlined in new guidelines, which include metrics for testing and protocols to protect vulnerable populations. States that have seen smaller outbreaks will likely open before hotspot states like New York, New Jersey and California. The President says ultimately, the decision of when to reopen will be up to each state governor.

Coronavirus Deaths Pass 33K in US (Undated) -- The number of coronavirus deaths in the U.S. continues to soar. Over 33-thousand Americans have perished from the respiratory illness. Most of those deaths, nearly 12-thousand, have been in New York City. Across the U.S., over 671-thousand people have been infected with COVID-19. But there's some good news, over 56-thousand people have recovered.
