Plans in place for food drive
Registration for food drive closed, assistance still available By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
Bennett says thanks to the city of Seguin, a plan has been laid out across the Seguin Events Complex to safely and quickly assist families.
(Seguin) – Organizers of a Mega Food Distribution event are not only sending a reminder but also some helpful tips to those who have already registered to receive food this Thursday. The team effort is being hosted by the city of Seguin, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and the New Braunfels Food Bank.
“The route that the city of Seguin has set up has been well thought out and what they want us to do is enter off of Nelda Street so you would drive down Nelda Street all the way to the end of the Four-Plex and then you will see signs that you will be entering into that parking lot and there will be lanes that you will be driving into and you’ll be parking behind one another and then you’ll just wait until our volunteers tell you when you can proceed through the line,” said Bennett.
The food drive is scheduled for this Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Seguin Coliseum parking lot. Not only has pre-registration for the event ended but it was also required for those wishing to receive food. Elaine Bennett, the chief executive officer for the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation, says those who failed to register should not be disappointed. She says there is always help available.

Saturdays so we always have that ability to access that food,” said Bennett.
Bennett, again, says she is thankful to the city of Seguin for being a part of this drive. She says these kinds of partnerships really help in reaching as many families as possible. See FOOD BANK, page 2

“What we have been seeing is a rash of car burglaries and actually some car thefts. Both the thefts and car burglaries are the direct result of people not locking their cars. The thefts of the vehicles are the direct result of people leaving their keys in their cars. This is the route vehicles will be asked to take for this Thursday’s food drive at the Seguin Events Complex (Coliseum). Vehicles will enter for the distribution line at the Seguin Softball Four-Plex. FOOD BANK, continued from page 1 “When we contacted the city, sent an email, the city manager was open arms. He said ‘absolutely, let’s do this,’ totally supportive of taking care of the community and filling the needs of this food and security that we are going through right now. They have been excellent to work with,” said Bennett.
In addition to City Manager Steve Parker, Bennett also extends a special thank you to John Donnelly, director of public works for the city of Seguin. She says Donnelly has done a great job in coordinating and supervising all efforts in making sure this drive is a success. Bennett believes this week’s food drive will only be the first of others to be hosted in the area. She says the
need is even greater during these trying times. “It really is at the heartstring of me. I mean it’s one of those things that I know food is so important to people and we do have food and security in our area and with COVID, it really has put more stress on more people that are in our community that have been effected by this pandemic,” said Bennett.
Food drive organizers remind individuals to not only bring plenty of patience but to also plan for a wait. The hope, however, is to move folks through as quickly as possible. They also ask that the trunks of vehicles be empty so that volunteers can have plenty of space to load food as they will be practicing social distancing. The groups also thank the many volunteers who have also signed up to assist on Thursday.

"Manny Longoria is the best example for what it means to be a Division III collegiate student-athlete, and his individual accomplishments - Academic All-American, AFCA All-American defensive end, ASC AllConference defensive end - while very impressive, speak to just a portion of the impact that Manny had on our football team," said Ricky Matt, TLU's new head football coach and Longoria's defensive coordinator the past three seasons. "Manny's influence and leadership off the field made his teammates, and coaches alike, want to strive to be the best that they could be in their lives." See WINNER, page 5
