Food drive helps feed hundreds of families
City of Seguin, Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation team up with NB Food Bank By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Hundreds of volunteers came out this week to load the backs of pickup trucks and fill trunks of vehicles with pounds and pounds of food. One by one, vehicles made their way through the assigned lanes in the Seguin Coliseum parking lot picking up staples such as milk, bread, beans, fruit and meat. The event hailed as the “Mega Food Distribution Drive” was made possible thanks to a host of partnerships. Those coming together included the city of Seguin, Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation and the New Braunfels Food Bank. Jumping at the opportunity to get the city involved was City Manager Steve Parker. Parker, who himself was loading vehicle’s with sacks of flour, says feeding families especially during times like these should be a priority for any community. "It is truly inspiring just the teamwork that's come together between all of the city departments, the county, everybody just working together, the turnout of volunteers. It just really makes you proud of this community. There's a lot of people in need right now. Our heart goes out to them so anything we can do to help them through this crisis and getting our lives back to normal and get people back in their jobs (and) everybody just trying to be safe. It's just an amazing turnout, teamwork. It's really a great event," said Parker. See FOOD DRIVE, page 2

degree but we will be prepared and will handle it now that we kind of got our feet wet of how this is going. I think we can put these together as regularly as we need to. I just ask everybody, if you can, this is a great organization to donate to. Really, what everybody needs right now is food and help with their rent and things like that to get them through this hump as we get ready to go back to our normal lives but this is just a perfect situation to contribute to and make a difference in somebody's life right now," said Parker.
Parker says he is especially pleased by the city employees who have all come together to help make today a success. "They've been planning this thing for several weeks, multiple meetings. They went to different events and have seen how they operate and trying to tweak what they do and I just didn't think that they could be more prepared than they were and they just hit it out of the park for me -- John Donnelly (director of public works) and his team, parks, fire, police just all of them working together and making sure that this thing was well oiled as can be and they were here ready to go when the food trucks got here," said Parker.
Parker says it is also been a personal rewarding experience to help his neighbors and is amazed by all those who came out to volunteer their time. "It just makes you feel great. I mean I"m the new guy here in Seguin but I feel like I've been here my whole life. It's just because of the way that the community comes together during different events. I've been through some major events in other cities that I've worked for -- floods, fires, things like that -- and you really see how your team operates, how your community works together by seeing how they operate during a tragedy, a pandemic, anything like that and just the teamwork and how this whole thing comes together. It's been inspiring. It's been great," said Parker. Parker says this week’s event was a huge undertaking having served close to 800 families. While he is not sure about any definite dates for any future event, he does know that the city as well as Guadalupe County are ready and committed to meeting the needs of their residents however, they can.
Initiating this week’s partnership with the city of Seguin was the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation. The Foundation works year-round to host similar drives at the hospital.
"The county has put up some funds in their last year's budget to have a couple of more of these. I don't know if to this
In addition to city, GRMC and community volunteers, members of the 840th MAC Texas Military Department (national guard) were also on hand to help streamline the process – getting folks through the lines as smooth and as quickly as possible. Those who were unable to pre-register for the drive or who could not make it out on Thursday are asked to call the New Braunfels Food Bank at 830-327-6000.

Seguin Main Street prepares customers for Retail to Go in Seguin By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) - Local businesses are asking that customers step up to the curb and help them reopen their doors. Starting today, some non-essential stores in Texas, that have been closed for weeks, will be allowed to operate utilizing curbside pickup or drive-thru. Retail to Go in Texas is what the governor is calling the first step of "slowing reopening the state for business."
businesses are being provided on its Facebook page. He says affording the information to the community is hopefully, a way for people to know how to go about doing business with that specific store.
"So, that means the customers are able to place orders either by the phone or online and that payment should be taken by the phone or online as well and then they come to the store and stay in
To help support local businesses, the Seguin Main Street Program has teamed up with dozens of merchants to launch what it is calling "Retail to Go in Seguin." Main Street Director Kyle Kramm says after several weeks of shutting down, it will be great to see local business resurface once again. "On March 31, the governor declared that non-essential businesses should close down so that meant a lot of our retailers had to close and so during that time, a lot of them switched to doing online sales or trying to sell things on Facebook or Instagram but then last Friday, the governor announced that retail would be able to open back up back but only doing curbside service," said Kramm. Kramm says links of how to shop at the various
their cars and then when they get to the store, call the store to let them know they are outside and the store employees will walk the package out to the car and put it in the car for you," said Kramm. Kramm says as more and more stores begin to open up, he encourages shoppers to check out exactly what Seguin has to offer. He says doing business has definitely changed for many retailers especially here in Seguin.
"Really, what we are hoping is that one, people become educated about everything there is in downtown Seguin as well as all of our local businesses that are in Seguin -- that they become educated and aware of about what there is and that they are going to start supporting these businesses in the future but also on the business side, it pushed a lot of them to do things outside their normal operations. Lots of them have launched new websites and new stores online and they have taken this opportunity to kind of clean up social media pages and things like that and it's been a positive in that aspect that the businesses are adapting and learning and improving themselves," said Kramm. Meanwhile, Gov. Greg Abbott says he plans to reopen the rest of the Texas economy soon, but he's not going to be rushed. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick has been pushing for a quick reopening, saying the damage done to the economy is worse than what the virus has been doing. However, most state leaders say Texas needs to be smart about how it reopens to protect public health. A new task force has also been created to help cities, specifically the larger ones, outline ways in which to reopen back up safely for business. The task force is looking to forward its recommendations to state leaders by May 8.

Second Wave Of Coronavirus In Winter Could Be More Deadly
(Atlanta, GA) -- The director of the CDC is warning of a deadlier assault from the coronavirus. Dr. Robert Redfield told the Washington Post this winter could be more difficult than the current strain COVID-19 is having on the U.S. right now. He noted another wave could occur during flu season and have a major impact on America's health system. Redfield also told the paper federal and state officials need to be prepared and continue social distancing as stay-at-home orders are lifted.
Coronavirus Hotspots Recovering (Washington, DC) -- The White House coronavirus task force says hotspots across the nation are recovering. Response Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx said the Detroit metro area is doing well with a significant decline in new cases. New Orleans is nearly back to the baseline of where they started with new infections. Birx says the Chicago and Boston areas appear to be flattening, after a couple of weeks of unique concern. Philadelphia, St. Louis, Houston, Atlanta, Nashville, Baltimore and Indianapolis also appear to be flattening. Unfortunately, the DC-Metro is not showing a decline and Birx urges residents to continue social distancing.

Hydroxychloroquine Study Shows No Benefit, Trump Dodges Questions
(Washington, DC) -- A drug backed by President Trump to possibly treat coronavirus is now tied to more deaths. That's what a new government-funded study shows. It reviewed hundreds of sick veterans across the nation and found hydroxychloroquine [[ HIGH-drox-ee-klor-ehquin ]] did not keep them alive or even off ventilators. Trump dodged questions about this during Tuesday's update. He only said "there have been some very good reports and perhaps this one's not a good report -- but we'll be looking at it."
Trump Updates On Cuomo Meeting
(Washington, DC) -- President Trump says the Administration has forged a strong relationship with New York. Governor Andrew Cuomo met with the President Tuesday, after several days of exchanging barbs regarding the response to COVID-19. The Governor and Trump agreed the USNS Comfort hospital ship can sail back to its base in Virginia, in case another state should need its resources. Trump says five million masks have been sent to New York and in two days, the number of masks will double. The administration has also sent thousands of ventilators, so many, that New York will send some of the surplus to other hotspots including Massachusetts. Cuomo says it was a productive meeting discussing the partnership with state and federal officials on coronavirus testing.
