Local senior raises voice in favor of new sports complex
(Seguin) – Ryan Rangel, a Lady Mats Softball Team member, has her eye on one final pitch this senior year. That pitch, however, is to the community and one that she hopes will leave the high school a little better than she found it.
Rangel has been racking up her stats this season by beating one school record after another. Despite all that success on the field, she believes her most crucial at-bat this year is getting the community to say “yes” on May 6 to a new baseball and softball complex at Seguin High School.
In November 2022, voters turned down this same proposed $7.5 million complex. However, this May, the district again asks voters to approve the complex ––this time with no tax increase.
Since last fall, much has happened if you ask Rangel. She has turned 18 and has become a
registered voter since the last time the proposal came up.
“I think I was just really upset because I thought we were going to get the bond the first time around and it was really upsetting not to get the bond the first time around and so I knew at the time, I couldn’t vote because I wasn’t 18 yet. So as soon as I turned 18, I registered to be a voter. So, I was ready to vote for the next bond and they mentioned that we were going to be able to do it again. I’m really just trying to do my best to get it out there and also do my part to vote. Me and the other senior Ashlie Aguilar, we are both going to go vote together,” said Rangel.
Rangel says many folks don’t get the opportunity to go straight into the polls as firsttime voters and have a say on an issue so personal.

Early voting locations different for each entity
Voters encouraged to check website for polling site
(Seguin) – Today marks the start of early voting for a number of city, school and political subdivision races throughout Guadalupe County.
Early voting days and hours vary by political jurisdiction, so voters are encouraged to check out the Guadalupe County Elections Office website to find sample ballots, early voting dates, times and locations.
Unlike the November election, when any Guadalupe County registered voter can vote at any Guadalupe County voting location, in the May 6 election, voters, this go around, will need to go to the specific voting location for the entity in which they intend to vote.
For voters who reside in jurisdictions that cross county lines, it is recommended that the voters check and see which county is conducting their jurisdiction’s election and locate their early voting location.
For example, the Guadalupe County Elections Office is conducting Elections for Seguin ISD, Marion ISD, San Marcos CISD (the Guadalupe County portion), City of Cibolo, District 5, City of Santa Clara, Lake McQueeney WCID and Lake Placid WCID.
Anyone voting in those elections can vote early at the main early voting location or one of the branch locations for that jurisdiction.
Voice, continued.
That’s why she felt it was important to campaign publicly for a new stadium –– giving voters a closer look at the field and the needs that currently aren’t being met.
“I think the stadium itself is mostly what we are trying to work for. We had gotten new dirt and new grass last year, which we were very excited for because our grass in the outfield was very bumpy, had a bunch of holes, was just uneven, and so was our infield like there were so many bumps – bad hops were happening very often. On days where it is raining, we are very limited. Practicing in a gym is
Meanwhile, the Comal County Elections Office is conducting voting for both Guadalupe and Comal Counties for the races in the city of New Braunfels, Comal ISD and New Braunfels ISD. Elections officials say while it might be a bit confusing, voters are asked call the elections office or check its website for the exact voting locations. They say Vote Centers will be returning this November giving folks the opportunity to again vote or vote early at any polling location. Exact times and dates for early voting can be found at co.guadalupe.tx.us/elections.
The elections office can be reached by calling 830-303-6363.
obviously (you cannot) compare it to a softball field. So, getting turf fields and stuff would honestly be amazing. We use benches to hold our bags because we don’t want to walk on the grass because if we walk on the grass too often every day, it kills it. So, the walk that is from the gate to the dugout has a patch of grass and it just kills it, so we just keep our bags on the outside part. So, we don’t even use our dugout during practices. It’s a little weird to not be in your own dugout for practices,” said Rangel.
Having inadequate storage and equipment are also problems for the program. Rangel says just about every component of maintaining a successful program raises concerns.
“I would say we don’t have a lot of room for a lot of stuff. We warm up on the outside part of the field because, once again, we don’t want to kill the grass by running on the field for warm-ups and stretching. We do only have two batting cages, and then we have tees that are, I don’t even know how old – I would just say little stuff like that. We use sheds to store a lot of our stuff (such as) the benches, added Rangel. Rangel says not much has changed, having played at the stadium for the last four years. She says as a player, it’s not always about physical talent. She says it can also take a toll on a player’s mental game if not careful.

Voice,
Voice, continued.
“It really just doesn’t look nice. It would be nice for people to come in and be like ‘oh wow, this is Seguin, it’s a really nice field’ but when you are going up against other people, they don’t really seem intimidated and I think once they play us, we kind of set ourselves up for failure (but) we’ve worked really hard this season and we are finally going to playoffs after not going last year. I think we are doing really well as a team and making our community proud,” said Rangel.
The ballot item, if approved, would also allow the high school to bring its baseball program home to the main campus. For years, all baseball games have been played at the city of Seguin’s aging Smokey Joe Field near the Seguin Coliseum. While it’s easier for some to recognize the value of having a new baseball facility, Rangel says some still question a total upgrade of the softball field.
But, according to Rangel, there is more at stake than just having a nice place to play.
“I am a little jealous just because some of the stadiums are actually really nice. They always have really nice restrooms, really nice stadiums, stands, and fields. I mean some of the fields are just amazing. Like, I have a little sister who is wheelchair bound and going
to other stadiums, like she looks so happy in the stands because there is actually room for her to be able to sit there and be able to watch my game. As for our home games, she is always off to the side trying to watch because our field is not very handicap accessible so it is a little difficult. So, she’s always off to the side and stays in her chair and stuff so I think that’s kind of what gets me more even though as a player, but to be able to see my sister not always be able to be there just because of how our stadium is set up, it’s a little heartbreaking,” said Rangel.
Rangel’s fans also happen to include her elderly grandfather, who is always game to watch his granddaughter play. Yet due to the lack of room in the stands, he too typically watches in a chair he brings from home and is nestled with the other family members, who, because the stadium lacks ADA standards, have to sit on a small section of concrete slab in between the stands and dugout.
With graduation just weeks away, Rangel says this upcoming bond election is no longer about her but those following in her footsteps.
“Honestly, I have so many cousins and I have a little niece, it would be so awesome to be able to come back and see them play on such a nice facility if we do get it. Even though I’m not the one getting it, it’s still nice to be able
to be there for my community in order for the other little boys and girls to get this bond,” said Rangel.
More importantly, Rangel says voting “yes” is often the right thing to do even when the ballot item doesn’t tug your own interest. She says it’s all about making sure the community has what it needs.
“Middle school started a team now for softball and baseball and it’s like softball here in Seguin is growing so much and we are going to have so much potential in the future even if I won’t be here. It benefits everyone. There is no tax increase. I mean you just simply have to go vote yes and it’s simple as that,” said Rangel.
If the game has taught her anything, it’s that in life, things don’t just happen, and she raises a question for the community – why would anyone not want to be a catalyst for change?
“As a senior my goal going into this year was to be able to leave a good legacy not only as a player but just as a person here in the community. I want to be able to set examples for other little girls who are coming or even the middle schoolers or even juniors, sophomores, freshman – just trying to make the program better in itself. I mean, who wants to come onto the program and leave it the same way that it is. It’s just always to have things that are always going to be better,” said Rangel.
Early voting for the May 6 Seguin ISD bond election begins today and runs through Tuesday, May 2. Voters are reminded that although the ballot language will read “this is a property tax increase,” the bond proposition for a new baseball/softball complex in the Seguin ISD would not increase the tax rate. Officials say this ballot language is simply required by state law, no matter the tax impact of a bond project.
Early voting locations include the elections office, Rodriguez Elementary School; Jim Barnes Middle School; Seguin High School, and the Seguin ISD Administration Building.

Lady Matadors Shutout BoerneChampion on Senior Night
Chris Austin
(Seguin) -- The playoff bound Seguin Lady Matadors used timely hitting, great pitching and superb defense to cruise past Boerne-Champion in a playoff tune-up on Senior Night at Seguin High School, taking down the Lady Chargers 8-0 on Friday night.
Senior Ryan Rangel started the scoring for the Lady Mats in the bottom of the 3rd inning with two outs by crushing a two-run home run to left field off Champion pitcher Ava Trevino. Rangel would finish her final regular season home game in Seguin going 2 for 4.
The Lady Matadors would score a run in the 4th on another two-out RBI, this time on a base hit from Cameron Rios to score Erin Johnston who singled with two outs to start the rally. Johnston would collect an RBI in a three-run 5th inning for Seguin.
In the 6th inning, Graylynn Salazar would drive in two more Seguin runs on a two-out base hit to close out the scoring for the Lady Mats, who won their 25th overall on the season and 10th in District 26-5A.
Pitchers Kendall Hurt and Madyson Schultze would combine to get the shutout. Hurt went the first four innings with Schultze going the final three. Each pitcher struck out three. Senior Ashlie Aguilar would help her
pitchers out with some great defense in the field at 2nd base, including a diving catch off a soft liner up the middle in the 7th inning.
The Lady Matadors, who had already clinched a playoff berth before Friday’s game, will play Buda Hays in the UIL Bi-District round next week. The time and place of the playoff match-up is still to be determined.

Childhood Vaccine Rates Dropping Post Pandemic
(Undated) -- Rates of childhood vaccinations are continuing to decline post-pandemic. A new study released by UNICEF found confidence in childhood vaccines has dropped internationally. While the vast majority still support child vaccinations, officials say uncertainty about COVID-19, misinformation, and political polarization has led to vaccine hesitancy. Roughly 67-million children missed vaccines between 2019 and 2021, and UNICEF says it’s seeing “the largest sustained decline” of basic immunizations in 30 years. The report calls on world governments to increase funding for vaccination efforts, especially to those in poor communities.
House To Pass Transgender Sports Ban For Schools
(Washington, DC) -- The House is expected to pass a bill to ban transgender athletes from women’s and girls’ sports. The bill would prohibit schools receiving federal funding from allowing biological males to compete in female athletics. House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik said the measure is about fairness in women’s sports. While the bill is expected to pass the Republican-led House, it will go nowhere in the Democratic-controlled Senate, and the White House has said President Biden would veto the measure. Democrats argue the ban is discriminatory.
Fat Joe To Advocate For Transparent Healthcare Pricing On Capitol Hill
(Washington, DC) -- Rapper Fat Joe will meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to advocate for fair healthcare prices. The Hill reports the New York rapper will meet with lawmakers and White House officials next week on behalf of Power to the Patients, a nonprofit that advocates for healthcare price transparency. He’s also scheduled to headline a performance hosted by the nonprofit next Thursday ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. He’s said millions of Americans have been dragged into debt due to the high cost of healthcare.
Lizzo Claps Back After Being Fat-Shamed
(New York, NY) -- Lizzo is clapping back after being fat-shamed on social media by Candace Owens. The conservative pundit responded to a tweet that showed a picture of an almost nude Lizzo that said women are told by celebrities and the media that being obese is normal and healthy. Owens said “Only women could be fooled into supporting a death cult of “fat acceptance”. Meanwhile, the Grammy-award winning singer posted a video of herself, saying she just finished showering and realized that she’s gorgeous.
