Area high school softball and baseball players recognized on Texas Coaches’ All-State Academic teams
(San Marcos) -- A number of area high school softball and baseball student-athletes were named Academic All-State by the Texas High School Coaches Association this week.
Seguin softball players Madyson Schultze and Summer Flores were named Honorable Mention on the Academic All-State softball team. Seguin softball coach John Garcia lauded his student-athletes on the academic team.
“They’re very hard working in the classroom,” Garcia said. “Maddy freaks out if she gets below a 95 (grade) like it’s the end of the world or something. But that’s good that she’s focused on her grades. And we do call them student-athletes first. So, they are students and they know that and that’s a big part of what we push here.”
For the Seguin baseball team, Rayjen Tovar, Holt Haas and Seth Cevallos were named to the Academic All-State 2nd Team. Haas and Cevallos were also named to the Academic All-State 2nd Team in football back in the fall.
Seguin baseball players Gavin Molina and Creed Weaver earned Academic All-State Honorable Mentions. Weaver was also an Academic All-State Honorable Mention for the Seguin football team. Molina also earned honorable mention academic all-state for the Seguin basketball team.

Clean Air Report
(Undated ) -- A report just released by the American Lung Association shows air quality in almost half of the U.S. is poor. According to the “State of the Air” report, the number of people affected rose from 119 million to 131 million from last year, with wildfire smoke ranking high among the contributing factors. Since the Clean Air Act in 1970, emissions of outdoor air pollutants, such as cars, fuel and industry, have dropped almost 80 percent, but more needs to be done regarding climate change and reducing traffic emissions among other factors. Cities in California and Arizona were among those with the worst grades for air pollution. Those ranked with the cleanest air were found in Maine, Tennessee, Nebraska, Honolulu and North Carolina.
SCOTUS To Hear Idaho Emergency Abortion Case
(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing a case involving emergency abortions. The high court is listening to oral arguments currently on whether emergency rooms in Idaho can provide abortions to a woman whose health is at risk. Idaho’s law makes it a felony for physicians to perform most abortions except to save the life of the mother. The Biden administration claims the law is unconstitutional, and that a federal law called the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act takes precedence. The law requires federally-funded hospitals to provide stabilizing care to emergency room patients no matter what, including their ability to pay.
You’re Only As Old As You Feel
(Undated) -- The older people get, the later they think old age starts. A German study published this week in the American Psychological Association’s Psychology and Aging journal checked in with thousands of people over the years born between 1911 and 1974. The longer the study went on, the further away people saw the start of old age. People born before 1935 thought old age started earlier compared with people born after. Part of the reason could be longer life expectancies and a better overall quality of life.
Nationwide Health Alert Issued For Possibly E. Coli Contaminated Beef
(Washington, DC) -- A nationwide health alert has been issued for certain ground beef products that have a potential risk for E. coli. The USDA says five and ten-pound beef patties and chubs from Greater Omaha with a “freeze by” date of April 22nd may have a strain of E. coli that is known to cause severe intestinal infections in humans. No one as of yet has reported being sick by the products, which were shipped to restaurants and retailers across the U.S. The labels for the affected products can be found on the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection website.
