Guadalupe Regional Medical Center prepares to resume operating room schedule still allowed but there are some patient populations that need surgery for whatever their condition is and that condition can continue to worsen if they don’t get surgery or they continue to be uncomfortable, things of that nature,” said McCown.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – GRMC this week will begin preparing its operating rooms. Guadalupe Regional Medical Center officials say on Tuesday, they will resume scheduling elective surgical procedures for their operation rooms. In accordance with guidance from the American College of Surgeons, hospitals officials will begin performing elective procedures at approximately 25 percent of their usual volume to ensure that they maintain adequate bed and supply availability to treat COVID-19 patients.
The hospital’s no visitor policy, however, will continue (with exceptions for special patient populations). One visitor will continue to be allowed only for the following circumstances: childbirth, end of life, parent of pediatric patients, goodbye visit of military personnel departing for deployment, and one designated caregiver for patients who are not capable of making their own medical decisions.
Earlier this month, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued executive orders relaxing prohibitions on performance of elective surgical procedures during the COVID-19 disaster. The purpose of the prohibition was to conserve personal protective equipment (masks, gowns, gloves, and facemasks) that are needed to care for COVID-19 patients.
All out-patient surgery patients will need to arrange to be dropped off and picked up.
Today, Guadalupe County has reported a total of 69 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Of that total, 35 are recovered and 34 are active cases.
monitoring its supply of personal protective equipment and has adequate amounts available to re-open its operating room for elective surgical procedures.
Fortunately, GRMC officials say the region has not seen surges of COVID-19 patients that have tested the other areas of a hospital’s capacity.
Elizabeth McCown, director of risk and legal affairs for GRMC, says decisions about surgery will continue to be determined by those surgeons who have direct responsibility to their patients. She says those who have postponed a surgical procedure are encouraged to call their physician’s office to discuss when they should schedule that operation.
Robert Haynes, chief executive officer for GRMC, has been reporting all along to the Seguin Daily News that Guadalupe Regional Medical Center has been closely
“We decided that it was okay to go ahead and open our operating room to a limited degree so that we can slowly get back to business as usual (but) with the recognition, that it is still not business as usual. We still have COVID in our county. The numbers look like they have slowed down significantly in the amount of cases per day. That we seem to have kind of a contained rate of growth, if you will, so knowing that we have patient populations that our surgeons have been on hand to treat emergent cases during the governor’s initial restrictions on surgeries. They were
Visitors will continue to be screened for travel, fever, and respiratory symptoms and no visitors under the age of 13 will be allowed in the hospital. The Patient Tower entrance remains closed. The hospital will continue to process patients through the Central and ER entrances. The Central tower entrance is open Mondays through Fridays 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the ER entrance is open 24 hours a day. Hospital officials remind the public that COVID-19 is a serious situation and continues to evolve. They say GRMC will continue to evaluate and respond to provide the best and safest care possible in these challenging times.

South Texas Pregnancy Care Center comes to the aid of east Texas tornado victims By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- A local group is not only working to meet the needs of families during this COVID-19 pandemic, it is also reaching outside this community to help those who face additional challenges.
“When you see somebody in such need, it’s hard to know that you have things in your storeroom or your shed or in our case, upstairs and we have more than we need right now and so to be able to share, it just seemed like the right thing to do,” said Weaver.
The South Texas Pregnancy Care Center (STPCC) which has been working steadily to provide diapers, wipes, formula, and other essentials to Seguin families in need has also recently expanded those efforts by assisting the tornado victims of Lake Livingston located east of Huntsville.
Weaver thanks all those in Seguin who continue to donate diapers and other baby items to the nonprofit organization. She says it is because of these donations that others who desperately need them will also be provided the basic needs to properly care for their children.
STPCC’s Executive Director, Janice Weaver says as part of the efforts to support communities during the COVID 19 pandemic, she has become a part of the Texas Pregnancy Center Directors group. She says it was through this group, that a trailer full of essentials for this community was driven to Grace Pregnancy Outreach Center in Livingston late Thursday evening.
“Thank you to our communities who support the South Texas Pregnancy Care Center, making it possible for us to share our resources with others in need,” said Weaver. “We have such wonderful donors and generous people in this area that we have never gone without and so people just have an outpouring and they give to us and so we are sharing it with others who need it.”
Weaver says when preliminary reports were in from the small suburban communities of Lake Livingston, 291 homes had sustained severe damage, 46 homes were destroyed and there were three fatalities.
Even while lending a hand to the tornado victims, the local pregnancy care center continues it operation in Seguin assisting women with pregnancy tests and providing basic needs for infants.
“One of the stories that touched my heart was this director, her name is Misty Nettles and she’s from Grace Pro Pregnancy Resource Center there in Livingston and one of their clients sent her a picture and said she and her three little ones were in the bathtub and as this storm is raging through and the roof is being ripped off their house and when it was all over, there was one wall standing and it was the wall that protected this bathtub and so when you hear stories like that, you just really think gosh, we

She says the center is also operating its own curbside service to help distribute items for anyone in the area who might be needing the help during this COVID-19 pandemic. Donations from the community are always accepted at the South Texas Pregnancy Care Center. The center is located at 975 W. Court St. The center can also be reached by calling 830303-2151.

Lee says making sure food gets into the hands of those who need it has always been a priority for the local non-profit. She says feeding families was the priority for the group before the COVID-19 pandemic and it will continue to be the focus even during these trying times.

We can actually do actual 20% OFF First Set of Eyelash Extensions intake paperwork maybe the next time they may need to come but we can get the basic information from them and we definitely want them to come,” said Lee. 830-372-5200
The COVID-19 pandemic is not stopping the employees from Century 21 United D&D Real Estate from collecting and donating food to the Christian Cupboard. The employees in just over nine days, raised over $1,000 in monetary donations plus 110 pounds of food for the local non-profit. Those wishing to donate are asked to drop off donations on the front porch of the local business located at 1498 E. Court St. The need for donations continues as more and more families continue to seek assistance during these trying times.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Seguin’s local food pantry is reminding families that its doors are still open. . Regina Lee, the executive director for the Christian Cupboard, says she is sending the message after the food pantry shut down its doors for a week in late March. Despite having closed for that week, Lee says the cupboard wants families to know that they
are not only open but have implemented all safety procedures to keep them safe. “I want people to realize that we were closed for one week because we could not get food from the food bank. We are back in operation. We are open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. So, we are back in operational procedures. We are handling it a little different, social distancing. We are not having clients come inside the building, but we are giving food. Same operational hours 9
Lee says the food pantry is especially ready to serve those who now find themselves needing a little assistance. Also, thanks to the community’s response, Lee says that assistance is now more than available. “The donation part is wonderful. I had 47 messages a (few days) ago, and 30 of them from people who were donating food. It’s astronomical. It’s really great. It’s like December. Christmas in April,” said Lee. Both monetary and non-perishable food items are accepted every day. A donation drop-off box is available 24/7 and is located on the building’s north side. In addition to food, the cupboard is currently also in need of egg cartons to help distribute the eggs to families. The Christian Cupboard is located at 516 N. Camp St.

Coronavirus Deaths Near 50,000 In U.S.
Homeland Security Science Leader Reports Coronavirus Findings
(Undated) -- The U.S. is nearing another grim milestone amid the coronavirus pandemic. Data from Johns Hopkins University shows over 49-thousand-900 Americans have died from the respiratory illness as of Thursday night. There were also over 868-thousand confirmed cases across the nation. New Jersey is now the second state to have over 100thousand cases by itself. On a positive note, over 80-thousand people have recovered from the disease.
Pence Cheers States Who Have Unveiled Reopening Plans
(Washington, DC) -- More states are detailing how they plan to reopen businesses closed during the coronavirus outbreak. During a White House briefing, Vice President Mike Pence said 16 states have drafted formal reopening plans. Pence said he's encouraged to see states embracing the White House's recommendation of a phased approach to getting businesses up and running again. Pence highlighted plans by governors of Pennsylvania, Missouri, Oregon and Idaho.
(Washington, DC) -- DHS science and technology leader William Bryan says the coronavirus decays faster in warmer situations. In a daily briefing, he outlined the findings of the department's study on the biology of the virus. Bryan said direct solar light has a powerful effect on killing it, along with increased temperatures and humidity. Conversely, the virus survives best in cooler temperatures and dry conditions. The department has the ability to test COVID-19 droplets on both surfaces and in the air.
Trump: Not Happy With GA Gov. Brian Kemp
(Washington, DC) -- President Trump is not pleased with the Governor of Georgia. Trump says he wants the states to open, but he was unhappy to see Governor Brian Kemp chose to open businesses like spas and tattoo parlors in Phase One instead of Phase Two of coronavirus reopening plans. However, Trump says Kemp isn't being defiant because the President ultimately wants the governors to make their own decisions on reopening the states following impacts of COVID-19. Trump added the White House coronavirus task force also isn't thrilled Kemp is opening businesses that are outside of their federal guidelines.
