Seguin among the Friday stops for Hot Rod Tour of Texas

Public invited to enjoy festivities at local distillery

(Seguin) -- Get ready for the sights and sounds of hot rods as they cruise their way into Seguin this Friday. CY distillery, located at 1535 Hoffman Rd., has been chosen as one of the stops in the Hot Rod Tour of Texas. The event is designed to give car and truck enthusiasts the chance to enjoy their vehicles while traveling along the backroads of Texas over a period of four days.

This year’s event featuring hundreds of registered cars will be stopping by and hanging out at the local business. The vehicles are expected to arrive Friday anywhere between 10 and 11 a.m. and will remain parked until 1 p.m.

Excited to have earned a spot on this year’s map is CY distillery Owner Brent Convey.

“I heard about this Hot Rod Tour last year from a friend of mine and I pushed them hard and here we are. We stole the Hot Rod Tour of Texas from the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner. I think that’s a big (deal) because Shiner is a great beer. So, now we are able to have it here. There will be cars from all over the U.S. including Montana -- as far away as I know -- 300 registered cars. We’ll see how many of them we actually get out,” said Convey.

Convey says the roadtrippers are expected to hit the road in Victoria, making Seguin its first stop of the day on Friday.

“It actually starts Thursday night in Victoria. There’s a kick-off party. We are the very first official stop on the tour. I think there are eight stops altogether but it finishes north of Dallas on Sunday afternoon,” said Convey.

Convey says a free invitation is being extended to anyone who wants to come out and check out the variety of vehicles that are participating in this year’s tour.

He says even locals are encouraged to pull out their own vehicles from the garage for a chance at some great prizes. He says live music, cocktails plus three food trucks featuring Creole, burgers and brisket will also be available for lunch.

Convey says he’s even dubbed the event as “taking a mental health day to come out and see some cool cars.”

“If you’ve got a cool car, bring it. It’s not just the Hot Rod Tour that can win the prizes. It’s everybody who’s got a cool car that comes in and spends some time with us,” said Convey.

This year’s four day tour is said to include the 300 drivers, 700 attendees and 11 stops. The caravan will be coming into Seguin from Gonzales on U.S. Hwy. 90 Alt. Hoffman Road is located near the Randolph Auxiliary Airfield east of Seguin.

Principal, continued.

Addressing the school board, Perez shared her excitement about taking over the reins at Seguin's flagship campus.

"To say that I'm excited is an understatement. I've had a blessing in being able to serve our students, our staff, our community not only as director of school leadership but in my newest role as the 2023-2024 school principal of Seguin High School. I have learned so much just in being at the campus this last month and it reaffirms my decision that being back on a campus is fulfilling an energy that was only fueled by my work with campus administrators prior to stepping in this role and I look forward to

Lions, continued.

Sharing more details behind this year’s catering prize and the other 11 raffle items up for grabs is fellow Lion Pat Sagebiel.

“The top prize is catering for 50 people. ‘But I don’t have 50 friends?’ laughs Sagebiel. ‘Well, I tell them, if you win, you will have more than 50. You will have a hard time deciphering who but Troy Brown and Next Door Catering are giving a meal for 50 people. The winner will determine the choice of meat and the two sides, the date and the time to be agreed on by the winner and Troy Brown so it’s a win, win there, and second prize is a VISA card for $750. We have 10 other good prizes but they are not in the champion level of one and two. The cost is $1 per ticket or if you want the bargain, they are 15 tickets for just $10. I have yet to sell a $1 ticket. People buy a pack.”

Lion Bill Klingemann says tonight’s delicious meal and the charity extended throughout the year are reasons enough for folks to drive on through and show their support.

“At the Spring Fling, we have our fabulous pork steak dinner which is served to-go. In addition, we have our raffle prizes and our raffle contest which people can enter but mostly, it’s about supporting the Lions and all of the hard work and dedicated service that we provide throughout Texas, nationally, and throughout the world,” said Klingemann.

Mike Wilson, another longtime club member, says the Noon Lions Club uses the proceeds from this event to support a number of local charities. He says it is also used in its fight against blindness, including its KidSight program that provides free eye-screenings for young children in the Seguin area.

“We do support several charities in Seguin in addition to our work within the school district and the children that we are involved with there. Of course, we have and have had over 50 years the Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children in Kerrville that we have supported and the Leader Dog Program and the continuing to make it a great day to be a Matador here in our district not only for our students, for our families, for our fellow colleagues in our community because it is truly my belief that our students are the best and they deserve the best and we will give them the best each and every single day. Thank you so very much," said Perez. opportunity for us to help those that are going blind or have gone blind -- also with the World Services for the Blind. So, we are involved in a lot of the vision projects as Lions have always been, or at least since 1926 whenever Helen Keller challenged us to be knights for the blind and the Lions adopted that way for them to focus on service in every community so we’ve been able to do that,” said Wilson.

Over the last several weeks, Perez has been transitioning into the position. Meanwhile, Dr. Esquivel will wrap up his eight years in Matador Country at the end of this school year.

Tickets for the pork steak dinner are $15 pre-sale or $20 at the event. Pre-sale tickets can be picked up at the Silver Center, Starcke Furniture, Ascot’s Custom Travel, or at Tri County A/C and Heating. The drivethru lanes will also be open for anyone who just wants to purchase raffle tickets. The Silver Center is located at 510 E. Court St.
