To open or not to open? That is the question
Restaurant owners share thoughts, decisions on opening their dining rooms By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
says they just cannot afford not to. Plus, she ensures every safety practice will be put into place for not only the customers but also for her employees.
(Seguin) – It looks like Seguin has a good mix of restaurants who will and will not be opening their dining rooms today as part of Governor Greg Abbot’s Open Texas plan. As part of that plan, restaurants, retail stores, movie theaters and malls can open today with limited capacity.
"We are going to let 25 people in at a time. We are making rearrangements where the tables are separate and there is space between people. We are wearing a face mask. We are washing our hands very often. We are telling my employees to really, really take care of themselves also and we are doing everything that we can -- everything that is being recommended -everything they say to do because business needs to continue. It's not like we can be closed for another month and another month. It just can't go on forever," said Ledesma.
As part of the governor’s order, all businesses, under phase one, will be allowed to reopen, but must limit occupancy to 25 percent. Among those waiting to spin its open sign around is Taqueria El Charro Tapatio located on South Guadalupe Street. While many other restaurants have been operating either through drive thru, delivery or curbside, Charro has been completely closed. It wasn’t until recently that the family operated business decided to crack open an old drive thru window to help customers pickup orders from its parking lot.
Ledesma says they'll be providing service for those who are ready to dine in and for those who may need a little more time. "If you are going to order to go or pick-up, please use the window and then dining is for dining only. That is so we can kind of keep control of the flow inside and not have so many people come inside," said Ledesma.
Manager Belen Ledesma says after weeks of not operating, her family knew it had to do something. "We were just kind of like okay, this is not going to be over. Bills are still coming in. Our employees worry. (They were off) 30 days and you kind of feel bad too for them and then everybody is asking 'when are you going to open?' So, we kind of had to rearrange inside, (rearrange) all of our machines close to the window and it was kind of crazy but we are still hanging on here," said Ledesma. As far as operating its dining area, Ledesma
While restaurants like Charro are ready to reopen, other food establishments in Seguin such as Kirby’s Korner will still have the doors to its dining room locked.
The dining room at Charro Mexican Restaurant in Seguin has been prepared to safely welcome in customers. The restaurant is among those who are inviting people inside its establishment during today's effort to Open Texas.
Owner James Jensen says with the restrictions set forth by the governor, he did not see a plausible way to take care of his customers while also keeping them and his employees safe. Instead, he says Kirby’s will continue to operate just as it has been these past few weeks utilizing drive thru, delivery and its “kurbside.” See RESTAURANT, page 3

FRIDAY MAY 1, 2020
No show times for the King Ranger Theatre Owners holding off on opening local theatre By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Today’s movie screenings across the Lone Star State will not be featuring the King Ranger Theater. That’s according to officials of its parent company Hometown Cinemas. President and CEO Randy Hester says even though movie theaters are among the list of things that can begin to operate today with limited capacity, the theater in Seguin will not be opening its doors to movie fans this Friday. "We are not going to be open on Friday and the primary reason is there are no new movies available for us to show. The only thing that is available for us will be something you can see on TV. So, given that plus the extreme limitation of 25 percent of capacity, it just doesn't make it feasible. I'm not going to get into the science of whether it is really safe or not. I'll leave that to the medical professionals but we're different than other retailers. Our product is controlled by the movie studios and there is not a new movie being released until July 10 and then one more on the 17th and one more on the 24th. So, we're kind of stuck without anything that people really want to see," said Hester. In addition to not having any blockbusters to show, Hester says the seating in the theaters is also a dilemma. He says with the 25 percent capacity limit per theater room, there is just no
way to comfortably seat movie-goers and work toward a profit. "If it's an auditorium for 100 people, we can put 25 people in there. Now on top of that, we've got to space them apart and in addition to that, the regulation was you had to close every other row. We are doing the calculation right now but we might not even get 25 people in there. So, the way the thing is written, I don't think they gave much thought to first of all, to movie theaters because we have nothing to show and secondly, when you start putting those sitting restrictions on us, it's not possible to staff up to serve just a few handful of people," said Hester. Now although their movie projectors will not be running, Hester says perhaps their popcorn machines can be ready to go. In an effort to salvage any dollar that it can all while still connecting with its customers, Hester says plans are currently in the works to offer those movie snacks curbside. "We are experimenting with curbside concession sales starting this weekend at our location in Lockhart because we realize that even though a lot of restaurants are doing curbside, nobody makes popcorn like we do. So, we are going to try to make that available. If it works, then we'll expand it and Seguin will be the very next place. We want to make sure that we've got all of our systems in place and can execute this well and then Seguin will be next. I don't know if exactly that means next week but we are trying to make it as soon as we can," said Hester.
Although the wait to watch a movie in Seguin can be as long as mid-summer, Hester is hoping to garner support for the local theater now.
reopen but we want to reopen, obviously, when it's safe and we want to reopen when it is something that people want to see," said Hester.
"We are going through the process of working on a new website right now and one of the things that will be featured is a special offer for gift cards where you can get some passes depending on the size of the gift card you buy. We need support because we want to
The King Ranger Theater along with Hometown Cinemas' other statewide locations have been closed since March 20. Many large and small theaters across the state have also made the same decision and are just not able to open their doors at this time.

Now although the dining room will remain closed, the patio area will continue to remain open. Jensen say the proper table accommodations have been made in the patio area for proper social distancing. Bertha Krueger, owner of Johnny’s Bar-B-Que, was also certain that she would not be opening the doors to her dining room this Friday. Krueger says “it’s just not worth it to have to get extra help to keep the limit of people. I don’t have someone to watch the people.” Like others, Johnny’s Bar-B-Que will continue to operate by preparing its meals for take-out.
Guadalupe County residents, who are dealing with symptoms, are invited to be screened for COVID-19 during a second mobile test collection site in Schertz. Meat Shortage Expected In Two Weeks As More Plants Close
Trump Wants To See States Starts Reopening As Quickly & Safely As Possible
(Waterloo, IA) -- Make some room in the freezer and start stocking up on meat. That's the word from experts warning of a shortage in just two weeks. They say only big box retailers will likely get enough, leaving shelves empty at grocery stores. This comes as Tyson Foods prepares to close its largest pork plant in Iowa tomorrow after a coronavirus outbreak. The company is warning "millions of pounds of meat" will disappear from the supply chain as the pandemic forces more processing plants to shut down.
(Washington, DC) -- President Trump wants states to start reopening for business as quickly and safely as possible. Trump told a White House briefing that the U.S. is hungry to get back to work. He noted that decisions about reopening are being made by governors. Trump unveiled a blueprint to greatly accelerate the amount of coronavirus testing in the U.S. He called it "maximum testing." Congressional Democrats and many governors have complained for weeks about a lack of testing in a nation of more than 325 million people.
Trump Lays Out More Plans For Testing Capacity
CVS To Offer Self-Swab Tests, Walgreens Opens More Locations
(Washington, DC) -- The White House is outlining plans to expand coronavirus testing. At a White House briefing, the President said the blueprint explains to states how they can maximize testing and monitor outbreaks of the respiratory illness. Trump said he's confident the country has the capacity to test enough people to start reopening businesses that have been shut down. Admiral Brett Giroir, an assistant to the Health Secretary, said there will be enough supplies delivered to states to dramatically increase testing.
(Woonsocket, RI) -- CVS and Walgreens are expanding testing for coronavirus. Walgreens has 18 drive-thru's open across 11 states, but will have 23 sites in 15 states in just a few days. The goal is to test 50-thousand people weekly nationwide. CVS is aiming for more than a million a month. It will offer self-swab tests at up to one-thousand locations by the end of May. The pharmacy currently has rapid-test sites in Connecticut, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan and Rhode Island.
