Guadalupe County Judge believes optimism, positivity are required for healing
(Seguin) – Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher is remaining optimistic amid the COVID-19 pandemic and of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s roll out of his Open Texas barbershops, nail Texas plan.
there are certain things that aren't as bad as everybody thought. Some will say it's because of a hoax. Others will say because of all the measures that were put into place. You are always going to have that," said Kutscher.
Judge Kutscher shared his comments during Tuesday’s meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court. His comments were also made prior to the governor's statements which talked about allowing Texans to decide on whether more Coronavirus restrictions are needed.
According to the latest information as shared by the state, the hospitalization rate is declining even though total active cases have increased. Just over 900 people have died in Texas from the virus with more than 33,000 confirmed cases.
Texas barbershops, nail salons can Open On Friday
(Austin) -salons, and tanning salons will be able to open up this Friday. Governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that there would be certain restrictions to prevent the spread of coronavirus including one person per stylist and a six-foot distance. He also said walk-in customers will need to wait outside or in a vehicle. Customers and stylists are also encouraged to wear facemasks. Abbott says no one is required to open back up on Friday and encouraged business owners to make their own decisions. Seguin Radio KWED and the Seguin Daily News will be talking to salon and barbershop owners here in Seguin to see if they plan to open to open up this weekend and how they hope to keep their customers safe. Stylist Leticia Gallegos of Cy's Creative Cuts, pictured here, says all efforts to reopen are currently in the works with the owners who, hopefully, will be announcing their decision soon. Be sure to look for more on Seguin's response to the the governor's decision to open up salons during Friday's edition of the Seguin Daily News. Courtesy photo.
Abbott told reporters that people need to keep practicing social distancing, good hygiene, and staying at home so more businesses can start opening up. He encouraged people to wear masks while on beaches or in state parks. As for Judge Kutscher, his comments were part of the court’s regular updates to the public. He says the first signs of optimism are the numbers of cases and the projections for the immediate future. "When you look at the CDC information, go to their website, they update that -- they had some really good information on this morning -showing that a lot of the projections were overshot by leaps and bounds. I'm not saying that to look back and say somebody was wrong. I think there is a silver lining in the fact that

Kutscher adds that what is most needed now is for the community to push its way forward. "My point is that we need to remain positive, continue to be diligent in being safe as we go through this phased approach for the state of Texas reopening. Personally, I wish that things would move a little quicker but at the same point, more testing is rolling out. We are getting more data and feedback which we didn't have before when decisions were being made so that is a good place to be to make decisions that are rooted and grounded in information and common sense. Again early on, nobody had that. It was projections. It was made up numbers that people were looking at. But now as we progress, hopefully, we'll go through and we will start opening things back up," said Kutscher. See JUDGE, page 3

SHS Principal shares more insight behind plans to honor graduates By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) - Seguin High School Principal Dr. Hector Esquivel says he has committed himself to doing all that he can to ensure that the Senior Class of 2020 gets the full celebration and recognition that it deserves.

Not only is Esquivel on the frontlines of ensuring Seguin High seniors get the graduation ceremony they deserve, but he also recognizes the true significance of this occasion for the families of each senior. He says finding a way to celebrate is also about the families who have been there every step of the way.
Esquivel today shares more with the Seguin Daily News on the school's future plans for graduation. Those graduation plans were announced during a press release on Monday. Esquivel says that plan first includes a streamed event featuring a SHS Senior Celebration on May 31.

"I have a daughter that will be graduating in San Antonio. Theirs will be virtual. They won't even have a live ceremony. They have already decided. She's in the Northeast ISD in San Antonio so it's hit all of us and I think that I actually feel an amazing and incredible responsibility to the graduating class of 2020 of Seguin High School. I have been their principal for four years and I would like to send them off in the best possible celebratory fashion that I can," said Esquivel.
"I hope that the community doesn't think that this is it. We are actually aggressively planning our live ceremony. Of course, it does not depend on us. We can plan all we want but we have to rely on information from the state, local officials, to let us know that this is okay. In the meantime, yes, the ceremony will celebrate the
In getting closer to nailing down their plans, Esquivel says he hopes every senior submits their information for the streaming event as soon as possible. He also asks that parents and family members encourage their senior to be a part of this historical moment. See PRINCIPAL, page 3
A live graduation event is also in the works. However due to COVID-19 concerns, he says those dates are tentatively planned for or July.June Esquivel says because the original graduation date is truly around the corner, the streamed live event will be a celebration recognizing all seniors. He says it will not only include the traditional speeches normally heard at a graduation ceremony but it will serve as a way for seniors and their families to still gather on that special day. "We have to acknowledge and celebrate our students. We are going to do it virtually at first and try that route to make sure that we celebrate them on when their graduation date should have been and I

County Judge shares the importance of continuing to keep safe during Open Texas plan JUDGE, continued from page 1 Kutscher also adds that individuals and families proceed by their own merits to continue to keep safe. He says there is no wrong or right way in which to begin the healing. "People need to continue to be safe. If you feel sick, symptomatic, if you are not sure, please seek out help at one of these testing sites through Patrick's office, through the Department of State Health Services. I can't stress enough, if you don't feel well, do not go out in public. Do not go around people. If you feel fine but you have concerns about being around others like at a grocery store or a high traffic area, if you are elderly, a week immune system, all the same things that
we've been saying -- please don't go out and be around people. But if you are healthy and you do feel like going out to a business that is allowed to be open, do so and do it in a safe manner. Be responsible and protect yourself and that protects the community. So we've just been reiterating to the public over and over and over and it's going to continue to be in that light as we move forward. We are all in this together. Keep moving. Keep being positive. I think we are going to get to a good place," said Kutscher. According to the latest information as shared by the state, the hospitalization rate is declining even though total active cases have increased. Global COVID Death Toll Passes 250K
Costco Limiting Meat Purchases
(Undated) -- The global death toll from coronavirus has passed 250thousand. The U.S. has had more deaths from the respiratory illness than any other country. In the U.S., the major hotspot has been the New York City area. As the death toll in the U.S. continues to rise, many states are beginning to relax their lockdown orders.
(Issaquah, WA) -- Costco is now putting a limit on how much meat customers can buy. The wholesaler says members will only be allowed three products of beef, pork and poultry. It comes as meat factories have temporarily shut down due to their employees testing positive for COVID19. Recently, Kroger applied a similar restriction to their stores.
Tyson Limits Production, May Cause Grocery Store Meat Shortages
California To Modify Stay-At-Home Order This Week
(Undated) -- Tyson Foods says pork production is down 50-percent due to the coronavirus outbreak. Despite President Trump's order last week to keep meat processing plants open, the company has been fored to shut down or slow production at half of its plants around the country because of sick workers. So, it's likely we'll see shortages of meat products in grocery stores and rising prices. Some stores are even limiting the number of meat products to three items per customer to make sure everyone gets what they need. There will be empty shelves at the grocery store but Economist Steve Meyer assures it won't last forever.
WORLD-CLASS CARE Close to home.
(Sacramento, CA) -- California Governor Gavin Newsom is announcing efforts to update the state's stay-at-home order guidelines and enter phase two of reopening. Speaking in Sacramento, Newsom says the new guidelines will be released Thursday. He said if those are met, then businesses can begin to reopen in certain regions of the state. Phase two includes the possible reopening of low-risk sectors like retail businesses. Newsom also said different criteria can be put in place in different regions for other businesses. If locally certified by health officials and proper capacity is in place, places like restaurants can move further into phase two.
