Marion ISD to get $78.8 million upgrade

(Marion) -- The third time really was the charm for the Marion ISD. Voters on Saturday gave their approval to Marion’s $78.8 million bond package. Similar bond packages failed in May and November of last year. But this time around, the district was finally able to gain the support of its voters. There was 777 votes in favor of the Marion ISD bonds, and 416 votes against it this year.

Marion ISD Superintendent Don Beck says they have worked hard to educate voters. He says they wanted to make sure that they truly understood what was being proposed in this package.

“The first thing I want to say, is I want to thank everybody for voting. We almost had double the amount of votes we’ve ever had in an election, and so the communication I mentioned to you back in November that I said communication was the key. I failed to communicate to people back in the fall, so ultimately that was our number one goal was to make sure when they went to the polls, they knew what they were voting for –– and thank them for trusting me and trusting the district and trusting our school board to move forward with the largest bond referendum, I believe we’ve ever had at $78.8 million. We’re ready to be good stewards of those funds and create something they’ll be proud of,” said Beck.

Dr. Beck says they want to thank the voters for giving what they need to keep their campuses safe, to

grow their CTE programs and to build a much needed competition gym at the high school.

“You know just the results and what it’s going to be able to do for our students and our staff. We are just excited about the opportunities that are about to happen,” said Beck.

Beck says the next step now is to go to the planning table and begin the design phase for these future projects.

Donations of bikes desperately needed for annual Seguin PD event

Community asked to donate bikes of all sizes

(Seguin) -- Due to a supply shortage, gathering the number of bikes needed for the 2023 Badges, Bikes, and Tykes, has proven to be a bit challenging this year.

The Seguin Police Department is seeking the

community's help in collecting enough bikes to be given away to local children.

The bikes are needed for the free family event scheduled for Saturday, May 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Max Starcke Park.

To help ensure the necessary donations of bikes, the Seguin PD is offering a listing of exactly what it needs. The following list is the size of bikes and the amount of them needed.

It's baseball games are currently played off-campus at Smokey Joe Williams Field, which is owned by the city of Seguin and located at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds.

The bonds also call for a replacement of the existing softball field at the high school. District officials say both facilities were out-of-date and, in some cases, not safe for play.

The baseball and softball complex will be built at the high school along College Street and they will share amenities, like restrooms and concessions. An identical issue failed during a bond election held in November, but voters offered overwhelming support this time around.

Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez says they are thrilled that the community was now willing to support this much-needed project. Dr. Gutierrez says this is great news for the kids in both programs and for the community overall.

"Our kids were devastated when it didn't pass in November. There were kids saying, 'Are we just not good enough? Do we not have support? Do we not matter?' And our response was, 'No, you do; we just have to do an even better job of educating and informing our community. We started having these conversations

about the baseball/softball facilities back in 2018, and unfortunately, conversations came to a standstill once COVID hit. But we felt very strongly, and I felt very strongly about coming back out to our community to let them have a final say. When it did not pass in November, and I had told my team and the board that I wanted to come back out in May, the response was pretty much, 'Are you crazy?' I absolutely knew in my heart our community supports Seguin ISD. Our community supports our athletes, and they certainly showed that they are going to have the type of facilities that they need and deserve," said Gutierrez.

Seguin ISD Athletic Director Craig Dailey says the recent rains demonstrated just how much the fields had deteriorated over the years. The fields were not suitable for play on multiple occasions, with several games being moved or postponed.

"I really don't know the words to really express how I feel right now. All I know is I'm so thankful for the people of Seguin to invest in these kids. I'm so excited for the kids of Seguin," said Dailey.

Dailey says this is a real win for the kids in the Seguin ISD.

"It's just going to give our kids so many resources and opportunities to better themselves and of course to grow our programs. Extra-curricular activities are just such a big deal for our kids to be successful in Seguin. This is going to give us another opportunity to get more kids involved in those programs," said Dailey.

Although he realizes the issues with the supply chain and unexpected extreme weather patterns, Gutierrez says he is holding onto to optimism that the fields will be ready in 2024. He says this is also in large part thanks to the board, who first started talking about this project five years ago, and who had plans already drawn up for this now voter-approved facility.

"We are going to begin to be able to move dirt here pretty quickly and hopefully, have our students next year play in these facilities at least play a game or two but the ideal timeline would be for our kids to see these facilities come to light a year from now," said Gutierrez.

The bond passed with 1,522 votes cast in favor of the bond, and 942 votes cast against it. The district already has its plans for the new baseball/softball complex, which they say should allow them to get started on these projects as soon as possible.

Seguin Grad Twitero Climbs to National Leader in High Jump as TLU Competes in Tom Tellez Invitational

HOUSTON, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran men’s track and field team wrapped up the Tom Tellez Invitational at the Carl Lewis International Complex on the campus of University of Houston on Friday in a Division-I laden field.

Junior Gerrit Twitero (McQueeney/ Seguin) added to his impressive 2023 season by scaling to the top of the NCAA DivisionIII men’s high jump qualifier list with a recordsetting 2.10m jump on Friday. The jump placed him first amongst Division-III competitors and only trailed Ese Amata from Rice who nailed the 2.10m mark in fewer attempts.

Sophomore Ezra Acero (San Antonio/ Harlan) also had a record-setting day in the pole vault, clearing a school-record mark of 4.91m. The mark landed Acero a fifth place finish on Friday and moved him into ninth place on the Division-III qualifier list.

The Texas Lutheran 4x100 relay team turned in yet another stellar performancewinning the event. The 4x100 team comprised of Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen), Rickey Franks (Rockport/Rockport-

Fulton), Bryce Powell-Chimene (Dayton/ Dayton), and Elijah Jefferson (San Antonio/ Construction Careers Academy) finished with a time of 41.67 seconds. The team ranks eighth in all of Division-III with three weeks left until the NCAA National Championships.

In throws, Dalon Harris (Garland/ Lakeview Centennial) would finish sixth in the men’s shot put with a mark of 14.25m. Riley Denman (Pearland/Pearland) finished sixth in the hammer throw with a mark of 43.93m.

Coach Holland’s Comments: “The trip to the University of Houston was a great one for TLU competitors. It’s always great to have the opportunity to compete at that level and see some of the top athletes not only in Division 1, but also in the country with sponsored athletes and post-graduate unattached athletes competing in many of the events.

More personal and school records as well as some improvements in the national standings.

Bryce ran a PR in the 100, and it’s cool to

see that our men who make up the 4x100 all run 10.80 or faster thanks to his new PR.

Very excited to see Ezra easily clear 4.91 and move into the top 10. I knew it was going to be a good day when he was warming up and he said “I’m on fire.” He knew he was ready for a big jump. Cleared 4.91 easily on his first try! He’s got more in him for sure.

Gerrit keeps improving in the high jump as the season progresses too. The clearance of 2.10 was a goal of his in outdoor and he got it today. From there, he found himself jumping at 2.15 and though it’s unknown territory, he had three great attempts at that height. Pretty cool to see his name atop the D3 list this late in the season. Confidence is building as we get closer to NCAAs.

Galvan entered eternal rest on Monday, April 17, 2023, at the age of 76. She was born on May 10, 1946, in Floresville, Texas to Alicia De La Garza but was raised by Olivia Solis.

She was a devoted mother, beloved friend, and cherished member of the Seguin community who lived a full and meaningful life, dedicated to her family and friends.

Teresa was born on December 22, 1953, in Houston, TX to Lee and Shirley Humphreys and spent her formative years there. After a 30+ year career in insurance, Teresa retired to help care for her beloved husband, Allen Cohen and her parents who had preceded her onto their next journey.

Teresa was a lifelong member of the Elks organization and a passionate supporter of its charitable initiatives. She was committed to making a positive difference in her community and devoted countless hours to volunteer work through the Elks.

Teresa was a huge fan of the San Antonio Spurs and her love for the team was evident in everything she did, and she took great pride in cheering on the Spurs through good times and bad. She frequented Spur’s games with her good friend, Leigh Harrelson and they were some of her happiest times.

Teresa is survived by her two children, Nicole Waskiewicz and Chris Smith, her granddaughter Anastacia Islas, and her brother Franklin Humphreys who will miss her dearly.

Austin St., Seguin, TX 78155 on May 5, 2023, with Viewing Hours starting at 12:00 p.m. and a Funeral Service starting promptly at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at St. Paul’s Church Cemetery in Cibolo, Texas, and a celebration of life will be held after the burial at the El Ranchito 983 Hwy 123 Bypass Seguin, Texas. It was her favorite restaurant; so come with stories and love.

We will forever cherish the memories we have of Teresa. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Galvan was a one of kind Wife, Mother, and Grandmother she loved all her family and friends. She was a passionate person always praying for others. Waking up every morning to a cup of coffee, starting her day with Peanut being her best companion.

She enjoyed listening to church music, going to yard sales, cooking, making tortillas sometimes tamales, and watching her favorite novelas. Her favorite outside plants were roses and Chile pepper plants. On Football Sundays you could hear her shouting, watching the Dallas Cowboys play.

In her home she always kept pictures everywhere of the family keeping the memories alive! She called every day to check in on us and we won’t forget the sound of her voice telling us how much she loved us!

She is preceded in death by her mother, Alicia; her second mother who raised her, Olivia Solis; husband Jose Crescencio Galvan; sister, Gloria Ortiz; brothers, David and James De La Garza and great-granddaughter, Mayra Salinas.

She is survived by her children, Lisa Galvan Vallejo (Ryan), Gregory Joe Galvan Sr. (Annette Ochoa) and Gilbert Sassenhagen Jr.; grandchildren, Jeremiah Holguin (Jenette), Jacob Holguin (Briana), Ashlie Salinas (Gabriel Jr.), Joe Raymond Holguin (Dana), Gregory Galvan Jr. (Deliah), Gracie Galvan and, Anthony Galvan; greatgrandchildren, Alyanna, Lily, June, Crescencio III, Emma, Kensley, Evelyn, Amaris, Jorden, Anthony, Atonia, Kalia, Adanary, Elliot, Leilah, Andrea, Zariah, Janiah, and Mariah; brothers, Carlos De La Garza (Annie), Frank De La Garza (Maria) and Valdo De La Garza (Judy) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Billie Ray Watson, Sr., of Seguin, passed away on May 3, 2023. Billie was born in Caldwell County, Texas on December 8, 1948. He was the first born to James Sr. and Ezell Watson.

He attended Seguin High School and graduated in 1967. After graduation, he went into the Army. He met Barbara Adams at Ball High in Seguin. They later married in 1969 and to this union, six children were born.

Billie Watson worked on the family farm along with his dad and brothers. In the Army, he worked as a helicopter mechanic. One of his first jobs was Koontz Construction, then Enron Gas. He retired from Davis Gas Company.

Preceding him in death are his parents and his brothers Steve and Timothy Watson.

Leaving to share his love is wife, Barbara Watson; sons, Billie R. Watson, Jr., Greg A. Watson, Max A. Watson, Sr., Michael S. Watson, David L. Watson; daughter, Monica Williams and son-in-law Kevin Williams; a host of grandchildren; and brother, James Watson Jr.

A private memorial service is being planned for a later date.

Beloved father, son and brother, Ernest Saenz’s life didn’t come to an end with his death. Ernest passed away on May 2, 2023 at the age of 50, in his hometown of Seguin, TX. He passed surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Ernest never knew a stranger and his love of laughing with family and friends spoke volumes of his character. He would reach out to embrace those he loved, lend a hand when needed and would pick up and call, just to see how you were.

Ernest is preceded in death by his mother, Irmalinda Ortiz and son, Ernest Saenz, Jr. He is survived by his children Brandon Saenz, Matthew Saenz and Isaiah Saenz, and granddaughter Josie Bazan.

Ernest is also survived by his loving grandmother Adelina Moreno, father Albert Saenz Jr., stepmother Sylvia Saenz and siblings Albert Saenz III & wife Christina Saenz, Crystal Garza & husband Henry Garza, James Guerrero, Danielle Guerrero, Andreas Saenz & wife Erica Saenz, along with a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

He will be forever loved by his many family members, friends and all who met him.

Ervin Carter (US Army ret.) was born February 10, 1935, and died April 29, 2023.

Ervin was born in New Orleans Louisiana to Walter and Rose Lee Carter. He married Ruby Jean Barnes on April 4, 1964.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, siblings; Gloria Lee Carter and Helen Stewart, and children; Walter Fitzgerald Carter, Sandra Marie, Ervin Carter Jr., Barbara Jean, and Wayne Carter.

He is survived by his children Wesley Franklin Carter (Heather), William F. Carter, JoAnn Coleman, and James Carter. He is also survived by his siblings, Earl Junius, Mary Lee, Albert, Irish, Ophelia, Patricia, and Anderson, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Ervin served in the US Army for 24 years. He served in Germany, Korea, Vietnam, and various bases around the United States.

After retiring from the Military Ervin and Ruby settled in Belmont TX where he was a dedicated member and Deacon for St. James Baptist Church.

His memorial service will be held Saturday, May 6, 2023, at 12 p.m. at St. James Baptist Church in Belmont Texas. The visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the church the morning of the service. Interment will follow in Peaceful Hill Cemetery that adjoins the church.

Donna Gay Kittelson, age 87 of Seguin, passed away on April 28, 2023.

Donna was born on July 22, 1935 in Green Ridge Missouri to Bessie (Embree) and Benjamin D. Bennettte.

Donna travelled with her husband, Clifford, who was a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, retiring after 22 years of dedicated service. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post #2329 in Tillicum, Washington, where she previously served as the secretary. She was able to travel to Washington to attend the VFW Post 90th anniversary celebration.

She loved working with kids in day schools, especially helping them with crafts. She loved crafting and making Christmas Gifts for all. Donna loved to travel, especially on cruises. A lover of country music, she would attend many concerts and loved to country western dance. Later in life she and her longtime companion, Howie Hayne, enjoyed concerts, sporting events and travelling.

Donna is preceded in death by her husband Clifford Kittelson, her parents and her brothers, Dean, Bill and Wayne Bennette. Survivors include her children, Steve Kittelson (Margarita), Vickie Kittelson Burns (Ken), Deborah Kittelson-Buck and Thomas Kittelson; grandchildren, Zach Burns, April Burns, Christopher Kittelson (Jhing), Patrick Kittelson, Rochelle Heller, Michelle Navarette (Gabe), James Hurley, Silvester Mendez, Jr. (Louisa Santiago), Margarita Woods (Tim), Matthew Mendez, David Mendez (Stephanie); 31 greatgrandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

A memorial service celebrating Donna’s life will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Terrell Harrison officiating.

Mata, 50, of La Grange, Texas, passed away on April 29, 2023. Jose was born on February 28, 1973, to Maria Mata and Jose Ramirez in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico.

He is preceded by his father, Jose Ernesto Ramirez Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Ester; his children, Johana Ramirez, Jose Ramirez Jr., Juan Angel Ramirez, Jonathan Ramirez, Denise Anaya, Izaiah Moreno, Roxanne Arenas, Justin Arenas, and Rene Orozco; his grandchildren; his mother, Maria Mata; siblings, Edgar Ramirez, Larry Ramirez, Linda Ramirez, Erica Ramirez, and Esmeralda Ramirez as well as nieces, nephews and numerous other family and friends.

Jose had an abundance of love for his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. He spent his time working in his tow truck, loved to attend car shows and ride in his favorite Harley or old school car with his wife, Ester.

Young Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, Have Highest Cancer Death Rate in Nation

(Honolulu, HI) -- Young Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders have the highest cancer death rate compared to other ethnic groups in the U.S. That’s according to a new study from the National Cancer Institute. It shows Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders between the ages of 20 and 49 are the most likely to die from any kind of cancer. The two ethnic groups were compared to American Indians, Alaska Natives, Asians, Blacks, Latinos and whites of the same age. The study focused on cancer death data between 2018 and 2020.

Florida Bill Passes Honoring Teen Who Fell From Theme Park Ride

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Legislation named in honor of a teenager who died at a Central Florida theme park last year is heading to the Governor’s desk. The Tyre Sampson Act requiring more stringent safety standards for amusement park rides passed unanimously. Sampson, who was 14-years-old, plunged to his death from the FreeFall ride at ICON Park in March of last year. If Governor Ron DeSantis signs the bill, all rides would have to post signage about height, weight, health and age restrictions.

Michelle Obama Launches Healthy Food, Beverage Company For Kids

((New York, NY) -- Michelle Obama says she’s launching a healthy food and beverage company to offer parents “healthier, greattasting products” for their kids. The former first lady made the announcement Wednesday at The Wall Street Journal’s Future of Everything Festival in New York City. The company Obama is launching is called PLEZi [[ PLEH-zee ]] Nutrition and its first product, PLEZi is a fruit juice for kids that contains 75-percent less sugar than average leading 100-percent fruit juices.

Health Concerns Raised At Migrant Facilities

(El Paso, TX) -- Shelters in the Texas border city of El Paso are flooded with illegal immigrants who were caught, processed and released by the Border Patrol. One of them, Sacred Heart Church, is now infested with bedbugs. The city also confirmed that there have been cases of chickenpox. The vaccine is not widely available in many of the Central American countries that the migrants are fleeing. El Paso’s mayor has already declared a state of emergency due to a surge at the border.

City of Seguin Updated Comprehensive Plan Open House

The City of Seguin will have an Open House for residents to view a draft of the City’s Updated Comprehensive Plan from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 10 at the Seguin Public Library. The Comprehensive Plan will provide a concept for growth over the next 20 to 30 years as it guides the City’s decisions related to transportation, infrastructure, parks, land use, neighborhoods, economic development, community image, and quality of life for residents.

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.
