Free event to include live music, desserts, awards

(Seguin) -- You’re invited to slow down, smell the roses and celebrate everything that makes downtown Seguin great.

This Friday night marks the annual return of Moonlight & Roses. The free event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Memorial Rose Garden located at Walnut Springs Park.

Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and DVB director, says the event is designed to be an elegant night under the stars.

“It’s annual tradition that is always held the first Friday in April and it’s a celebration of our downtown. We also have live jazz music in the rose garden and then there’s complimentary desserts in the park as well so it’s just a good evening to come out and enjoy the beautiful rose garden Roses, pg. 4

A spinning

Fields of pinwheels have blossomed throughout Guadalupe County. The annual pinwheels are planted each April in observance of Child Abuse Prevention Month. Hosting the countywide effort is the Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center. See story on page 2.

Group to host several awareness events, fundraisers

(Seguin) – As you make your way throughout Guadalupe County, you might want to take note of the colorful pinwheel gardens that have sprung up across the area. In each of those 15 gardens, exactly 903 pinwheels have been planted. The 903 illustrates the number of children that were served this past year by the Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center.

Christy Williams, executive director of the Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center, says the pinwheels are just one of the numerous items that have been included in this month’s schedule to help observe the month of April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month and to raise awareness

on the seriousness of child abuse and neglect here in Seguin and Guadalupe County.

“We are going to be doing a golf tournament on a Monday so you can skip work, and we are doing that on April 7. We are going to be beneficiaries of the First Friday Feast (hosted) by the Geronimo Lions (at the Big Red Barn) on April 4 (at 5:30 p.m.). We have a bowling tournament on April 12. So, we have a very busy April coming up. In addition to that, we are going to be doing our Schertz Designer Bingo again in our Schertz area and we are doing a new fundraiser here in Seguin which will be a Casino Night at the Big Red Barn and a brand-new fundraiser over in the Schertz area

to hopefully help us get a Schertz location that will be ours. It will be comparable to the one that we have in Seguin and that will be the kickoff event for that and that’s going to be a Bash to Make Our Children’s Future Bright,” said Williams.

The Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center is a non-profit organization designed to help children and their families when there are allegations of child abuse or neglect.

Williams says the center provides a safe, child-friendly environment for children to speak to a trained forensic interviewer about what they have experienced. She says this process, in most cases, Advocacy, pg. 4

Fashion Framework opens Friday

TLU Artist Emily Gaffney is Ready to Fly

(Seguin) -- A solo art installation isn’t a bad way to wrap up your undergrad career. But it takes a lot of hard work and even more courage.

Senior Texas Lutheran University art major Emily Gaffney has managed both—and her show, entitled “Fashion Framework,” opens at the university’s Annetta Kraushaar Gallery on Friday, April 4, with a reception from 5 to 6 p.m.

The subject matter is inspired.

“This show is a collection of artworks depicting skeletons in American women’s fashion from different decades. It includes six artworks showing the different mediums I have learned while at TLU,” says Gaffney, whose goal is to capture the viewer’s attention with the contrasting imagery of skeletons and feminine clothing. “The skeletons are all stylized, so

each one is unique to the others. I want each artwork to show off who each character is and how she would fit into the decade her clothing represents.”

Gaffney has spent a long time creating the pieces for the show, but she learned a lot along the way.

“There are a few different mediums and techniques I used to create this collection, so I was also learning new skills along with developing already existing skills,”

she says. “The most important part of the process was deciding what decades each skeleton would be dressed in, as well as what scene I would place them in. It was a long process to create just these six pieces and make them look like they belong together, even though they are not all the same medium or size.”

Gaffney graduates this May and plans to keep her artistic momentum rolling by earning her master’s in fine arts, and one day turning the tables to become a college professor here in Texas. She’s already proven that the hard work and courage it’ll take are in the bag.

You can catch the show from April 4 through April 18 and there is no admission charge. The Annetta Kraushaar Gallery is located on campus in the Schuech Fine Arts Center.

with great music and just be a part of the community and celebrate downtown,” said Kramm.

One of the ways to celebrate downtown during the Moonlight & Roses event is with the presentation of the 2024 Downtown Awards. Kramm says the awards are the city’s way of recognizing the volunteers, businesses, and organizations that have made a lasting impact on downtown during the previous year.

“We are presenting five awards for downtown this year, and they include our Downtowner of the Year which is the business or organization that we feel has had the most significant impact in downtown over the last year. We also have a Volunteer of the Year, Beautification Project of the Year and a Dynamic Downtown Business and Downtown Partner as well. In addition to our presentation of the Downtown Awards, the Seguin Commission on the Arts is partnering with us to present their art awards so we will also have four awards that will be presented to art organizations and businesses as well,” said Kramm.

Although the event is free, Kramm says there will be ways in which to elevate the evening.

He says this includes the purchase of a Picnic Basket for Two for $85. Each basket includes a charcuterie, wine glasses and a picnic blanket. Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase commemorative wine glasses.

Advocacy, continued.

can be reserved in advance at the Seguin Visitor Center located at 200 South Austin Street. Kramm says a limited number of baskets will be available for purchase during the event.

Providing live music for the evening will be the Dirty River Jazz Band. A special raffle will also be held for a chance to win one of the available rose arrangements generously donated by local florists.

Those attending are encouraged to bring their own beverages, lawn chairs, or picnic blankets.

All proceeds raised that evening will go to support downtown beautification efforts.

offers the children the opportunity to speak about the experience only one time rather than multiple times – eliminating the child from being revictimized.

“We provide forensic interviews for law enforcement, child protective services, we provide counseling services free of charge to our kiddos and their caregivers for as long as they need. It’s trauma focused. It’s evidence-based and we are the only provider here in Guadalupe County that is able to do

that, and we have now 18 staff members working at the center. We have grown significantly since I first came to stand at this podium and I’m really proud of the work that my staff does and super thankful of our team, law enforcement, child protective services, prosecutors, medical and mental health professionals,” said Williams.

The run down of events this month was shared with members of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court. The court on Tuesday proclaimed its support of April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Seguin’s Caleb Aguilar and Ian Moreno invited to Hawaii Tiki Bowl

(Honolulu, HI) -- Seguin Matador football player Caleb Aguilar announced on social media Wednesday that he has been invited to play in the Hawaii Tiki Bowl to be held in Honolulu in December.

Aguilar played in eight games in his junior season last fall for the Matadors. He registered 25 tackles including two for loss. Aguilar will be joined in Hawaii by teammate Ian Moreno who announced he received an invitation to the bowl game last month.

Moreno was moved from the defensive secondary to the offensive side of the ball due to injuries at the running back position for the Matadors in 2024. Moreno burst onto the scene in the third game of the season when he rushed for 296 yards on 42 carries in Seguin’s 41-37 come-from-behind victory over Brazoswood. The junior finished the season with 1273 yards on 233 carries with eight touchdowns.

The Hawaii Tiki Bowl will be held on December 20th in Honolulu.

Top Bird Flu Experts Fired In FDA Job Cuts

(Washington, DC) -- The top experts at the FDA overseeing the U.S. bird flu response have been fired in the latest federal job cuts. About ten-thousand workers were laid off Tuesday across the Department of Health and Human Services, including about 130 staff members at the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, which has played a key role in limiting the spread of the bird flu. Nearly 170-million chickens have either died or been put to death in the U.S. because of the bird flu, which has driven up the price of eggs. In January, a person in Louisiana became the first human to die from the bird flu in the U.S.

Dozens Of Free Measles Vaccine Clinics Close In Texas

(Dallas, TX) -- Dozens of free measles vaccine clinics are closing in Texas. Massive cuts to federal funding have forced health officials to close over 50 different clinics on the front lines of the state’s growing measles outbreak. There are over five-hundred confirmed cases of the disease nationwide, with more than 420 of those in Texas. The director of the Dallas County health department is calling the move “very short-sighted.”

Over 200 Passengers Sick With Norovirus On Cruise Ship

(Undated) -- More than two-hundred passengers are sick with norovirus on a luxury cruise ship. The Cunard Line ship left England and sailed to New York and the Caribbean before returning to the United Kingdom. The CDC says a sweeping norovirus outbreak was reported in late March, and has since infected 241 people onboard.

Senate Passes Bill Allowing Residents To Opt Out Of Required Vaccines

(Bismarck, ND) -- The state Senate is approving a measure that would allow North Dakotans to opt out of required vaccines. If made into law, House Bill 1454 would let someone refuse a vaccine for health, religious, or philosophical reasons. Supporters say the bill is in response to COVID vaccine requirements that have since been reversed by President Trump. Those exempt from the bill include those who work for the Department of Corrections, child care centers and long-term care providers.

Q:I just bought some herb plants from the Master Gardeners. Do you have growing tips and perhaps information on which herbs do well here?

A: There is a lovely eight page brochure on aggiehorticulture called Herbs for Texas Landscapes. It is listed under their vegetable resources easy gardening series and was written by Joseph Masabni, Ann Wheeler, and Mengmeng Gu. Reading this article reminded me that not only are herbs culinary, they also can be used for their aroma, healing, attracting bees and serving in the landscape. Dried herbs can also be used to repel moths when you are putting away your winter clothes.

The article suggests planting your first herbs in pots so that you can move them around the garden to find out which location is best for your needs. Lovage is a cool weather plant that requires deep shade. Catnip and patchouli are partial shade perennials, although cold may kill the patchouli. Partial sun herbs are lemon thyme, marjoram, oregano, Roman chamomile, and rosemary. Deep shade to bright sun herbs include comfrey, garlic chive, lemon balm, and mint. Parsley likes bright sun to part shade. And chervil, Cuban oregano and valerian can handle bright sun to deep shade.

Good healthy soil is a requirement. Herbs also must have good drainage. The article recommends that you don’t pile mulch up around four inch herbs. Keep the mulch pulled back

so that the plants have good air circulation. Water and fertilize as you do other plants, but do not over fertilize because you get lots of growth but less flavor.

My favorites are the basils, rosemary, bay, dill, and chives. Remember that mint can spread, so best to keep it in a pot.

Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac adds a culinary hint. He gives a conversion for when you are cooking with fresh herbs rather than dry. One tablespoon of fresh herbs equals one teaspoon of crumbled dry herbs, or one-fourth to one-half teaspoons of ground herbs. Welsh also gives an easy drying method for herbs. He says to place the clean leaves on a paper plate or paper towel, and microwave for one to three minutes, while mixing every 30 seconds.

Q:

When can I move my house plants outside?

A:My plumaria that wintered in the garage are already outside. Welsh suggests a location for your houseplants that has morning sun and afternoon shade (or daylong filtered sunlight). Watch for sunscald. Remember that these plants have been indoors. The plants should be fertilized now, according to Welsh. I usually put out my poinsettia, ficus, anthurium, and the orchids that have finished blooming.

FYI: As always, keep your birdbaths and water containers full. My water lily ponds lose an inch or two of water every day.
