Squirrel trail makes its way to TLU

(Seguin) – TLU is no longer home to just the Bulldog. It’s also now home to the Squirrel.

Bright, bold, and powerful are the words being used to describe the city of Seguin’s 12th and newest Squirrel recently unveiled on the Texas Lutheran University campus. Seguin’s Squirrel Trail program promotes the fiberglass squirrel statues that are sponsored publicly, painted and then placed at various locations around town. At TLU, folks can find “Buddy” the Squirrel nestled under the trees at the historic Fritz House located near the corner of Prexy and West Court Streets.

Helping to unveil “Buddy” to the university and Seguin community was TLU President Dr.

Debbie Cottrell. Cottrell says the unveiling of Buddy is extra special as it serves as a tribute to one of their beloved groundskeepers who died this past year.

“Just so happy that we can pay tribute to our colleague Buddy Landrum with this squirrel as well,” said Cottrell. “Buddy was a longtime colleague, and he was very attentive to keeping our campus beautiful. He was known for the gardens and for just a lot of tender care at TLU’s campus and so, as I said, when we decided that the squirrel should have a name, it just seemed so completely appropriate to honor Buddy with this squirrel and he was also someone as I said who just brought a lot of joy to our hearts and -

Squirrel, continued.

we have no doubt that Buddy has a big smile today thinking about this squirrel being here and being named for him.”

Cottrell says the creativity behind Buddy is also a showcase of the many talents that can be found at TLU.

“I think he’s beautiful. I think he captures the spirit of TLU. I think he is a beautiful example of public art. So proud that we have two young alums who worked hard on this and had the vision to make the design like it is,” said Cottrell.

Responsible for Buddy’s bright, bold and powerful presence are those two young alums Mia Ramirez and Emi Aubin. Both currently work for TLU and were handpicked for the opportunity to display their artistic ability.

Ramirez, who currently works in the TLU Admissions Department, says she not only wanted Buddy to set the tone for the campus but she wanted every part of him to be reflective of the campus community.

“My favorite part is the tail. It’s all the little paw prints and then like the ombre of oranges and yellows -it just really kind of pulls them all together. I also like the eyes. If you get really up close to them, you can see that there are little stars in the eyes – just to be kind of star struck, I guess. I want our students to feel like that when they come on campus to visit us, (I want them to say) –‘Wow, this is the place for me to be. This is like my home too,’” said Ramirez.

Like Ramirez, Aubin, who works as the administrative assistant for Student Affairs, agrees that Buddy’s eyes will do most of the talking when visitors stop by for a visit.

“Me personally, I’m obsessed with the eyes. Mia put such a lovely little twinkle into them. It’s very whimsical and kind of ‘fairytale-ish’ and disclaimer, Mia is the real traditional painter of the two of us. I am a digital

illustrator so I really could just assist her where she needed me to. She would just kind of let me know what she needed help with,” said Aubin.

Aubin says the hope now is that the squirrel will bring some much needed attention to the TLU Art Department and its talented pool of students and staff.

“I also really hope that it makes people kind of take notice of the art department that TLU has. With the mural unveiling (across Langner Hall) and things like that, I feel like there’s been a little more light shown on the art department as a whole which brings me such joy. It just makes me happy at the idea that things like this and the mural and all of that will get more eyes on the art department and make people realize more that TLU’s art department is actually pretty good. There’s a lot of genuine love and passion for the artworld and I learned so so much as a student here,” said Aubin.

Although Ramirez and Aubin have non-artrelated jobs on campus, TLU officials say they are both actively making art. “Aubin regularly produces digital art and Ramirez is a hyper-realistic artist who works on commission and is also studying to become a tattoo artist.”

There is approximately a dozen more squirrels that are still scheduled to be unveiled over the next year throughout the city of Seguin. Squirrel sponsorships are also still available for $2,500. Those interested in participating in the program are asked to contact the Seguin Main Street Program at 830-401-2448.

Other squirrel locations include the Seguin Public Library, Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, Schertz Bank & Trust; Seguin’s Central Park, Seguin’s Hike & Bike Trail just behind St. James Catholic Church, the Meservey Group PLLC, Starcke Park East, Park West and Bauer Park, the Women’s Federated Club Building and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

TLU Baseball Falls to Centenary in SCAC Championship Game

CLEBURNE, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball was unable to overcome big third and sixth innings in a 9-5 loss to Centenary in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship game on Monday at La Moderna Field.

Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) gave Texas Lutheran (25-17) a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a one-out RBI single.

Centenary jumped in front with a three-run third inning, producing the runs on four hits.

Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis), who would hit .368 in his final career SCAC tournament, would shrink the Gents lead to 3-2 with an RBI single in the fourth before the Gents would get the run right back in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double.

Brendan Beard (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst) gave the Bulldogs three innings of relief, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits. For the tournament, Beard pitched 12 innings and struck out ten batters. Diego Vinton (Richmond/George Ranch) got the start on the mound and took the losing decision, pitching five innings and allowing four runs on six hits.

Centenary would score five runs across the sixth and seventh innings to stretch their lead to 9-2.

The Bulldogs wouldn’t go down without a fight, scratching across a run in the eighth via an RBI groundout from Bourgeois and a two-run home run from Xavier Arias (La Vernia/Nixon-Smiley) in the ninth.

Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson), Aric Vasquez, Carson Draehn (Brenham/Brenham), Hayden Kesselring (New Braunfels/New Braunfels), Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial), and JT Taylor (Conroe/ Fort Bend Christian) were all named to the SCAC All-Tournament Team.

The Bulldogs - a team picked to finish third in the SCAC preseason poll - conclude the 2024 season with a 25-17 record,

going 12-9 in the SCAC to claim fourth place in the conference in the regular season. Texas Lutheran will graduate ten seniors - Dylan Swanson (Katy/Katy), Johnny Garza Jr. (San Antonio/ McCollum), Aric Vasquez, Carson Draehn, Asher Bonnell (Round Rock/Stony Point), JT Taylor, Coker Novosad-Wagner (San Antonio/ St. Mary’s Hall), Hayden Kesselring, Brendan Beard, and Tyler Post. “It is always very difficult to give up someone you love, even when it is time.”

Ida Louise Flach was born June 3, 1926, to Richard and Stella Kott in Comfort, Texas, and passed away on February 29, 2024, at the age of 97. She graduated from Comfort High School and Southwest Texas State Teachers College. On November 27, 1946, she was married to Alfred E. Flach, Jr. The marriage lasted 61 years. Four sons were born to them. While raising her family she taught school for 31 years and was a member of First Methodist Church for more than 60 years.

Ida was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her only brother, and her two sisters. She is survived by her four sons and their wives: John and Nancy, Marc and Lexi, Tim and Cecelia, and Todd and Lena. As well as her seven grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Ida was born on the family farm before electricity or indoor plumbing and grew up during the Great Depression. She was educated in the one room country “Holiday School” that featured boys and girls outhouses and a horse pen. She eventually continued her education “in town,” sometimes staying overnight at her grandparents’ home. She graduated high school in 1942 during WWII and lived through the shortages of the Depression and the

rationing of sugar, gasoline, meat, rubber, and butter during the war.

When Al came home from the South Pacific Theater of War they were married and set up house in the attic of her grandparents’ home. John was born in Kerrville when they lived in Comfort, Marc was born while she and Al attended college in San Marcos, and Tim and Todd were born in Seguin.

When Ida still lived on the farm as a youngster, she did not get into town to attend church. She started a lifetime of devotion in the Methodist Church when she and Al married. Her experience on the remote farm during the Depression and the Homefront deprivations during WWII gave her a deep appreciation and commitment to the family pulling together for the prosperity of her family, community, church and friends. From her scarcity she made abundance. She truly knew how to love as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, neighbor, Christian and teacher.

Every person who ever met Ida (affectionally known as Dama by family and so many others) felt the sincerity and depth of her love. We must now let her go, but we will never stop missing her.

A memorial service celebrating Ida’s life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at First Methodist Church, Seguin at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend Cathe Evins officiating. A reception will follow in Hierholzer Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin St., Seguin, Texas, 78155, or a charity of one’s choice.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www.tresehewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Researchers Make Robots More Life-Like

(Austin, TX) -- The latest advance in robotics is making machines more life-like. Researchers at UT Austin have developed a stretchy, electronic skin that mimics how human flesh works. Professor Nanshu Lu says the sensors are accurate even when the skin is stretched to the limit. She envisions the technology used in robots that provide care to humans. Their so-called e-skin would allow the machines to softly wipe a patient or help them turn in a bed.

NYC Sees Rise In MPox Infections Since Fall

(New York) -- M-pox cases are on the rise again in New York City. The Health Department says new cases of the virus formerly known as “monkey pox” are averaging 36 per month since October, after ranging from two to 20 cases per month earlier last year. Officials also have their eye on a more severe strain of the illness that has surfaced in the Congo. They worry that it could spread here.

Possible Contaminated Nuts

(Austin, MN) -- Hormel is recalling two varieties of Planters nuts because of a possible listeria contamination that could cause fatal infections. The products, Honey Roasted Peanuts and Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts, were sent to Publix warehouses in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina. They were also sent to Dollar Tree warehouses in South Carolina and Georgia.

New Recommendations For Breast Cancer Screenings

(Undated) -- There’s a new update to a national task force guidance for breast cancer screenings. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is now recommending women between the ages 40 to 74 to get a mammogram every other year. Previous guidelines said biennial mammograms should start by age 50 and the decision for women to screen in their 40s was at their discretion. However, groups like the American Cancer Society have already been recommending women start screenings in their 40s. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in U.S behind skin cancer.
