Local teachers celebrated for helping lead the pack By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) — The COVID-19 pandemic is not putting a stop to recognizing the top teachers in the Seguin ISD for the 2019-2020 school year. Sean Hoffmann, chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says just before leaving for Spring Break, the teachers had already been nominated and selected as Teacher of the Year by their campus peers. "It's quite an honor. We have so many deserving teachers and I know it's difficult for our campuses to select just one but it's a good way to recognize those who rise to the top and we have had seven months of normal school if you will from back towards the end of August into March. So, we had a good length of time in which our campuses can get a good determination on who they want to represent their particular campus," said Hoffmann. See TEACHERS, page 7

Local non-profit shares awareness on mental illness think of as schizophrenia, as bipolar, those kinds of things but depression can also be a part of a mental health condition as well as anxiety as well as panic attacks, PTSD so I like to use severe and persistent. A lot of people ask me about their teenagers and their ups and downs - severe and persistent (mental illnesses) - and it is out of the ordinary and you are concerned going 'hmm, what's going on?' And today with COVID-19, people having to stay in longer, some people do get depressed. Maybe they are sleeping too much. I encourage people to check in

(Seguin) – Individuals and families in Guadalupe County are reminded that there is help and support available for those struggling with mental illness. In observance of May as National Mental Health Awareness Month, the local affiliate of NAMI Guadalupe County is working to help share its non-profit programs and services with the families across the county. NAMI, which stands for National Alliance on Mental Illness was first introduced to the community by local resident Barbara Vinson. Vinson says NAMI Guadalupe County is committed to providing education, advocacy and support to families and individuals affected by mental illness. "I moved here from Austin and I was with NAMI Central Texas in Austin, Texas and I realized that there was nothing here to help people. There was no NAMI and since it was a rural area, it has to be an affiliate B model and so I decided to name it NAMI Guadalupe County so people were having to go to San Antonio and fight the traffic to go to a program because we offer free programs. We offer free support groups. We will be affiliated two years in August and I have an office that is in the Emmanuel's Lutheran Church over on Travis Street. They gave it to me for free. I have a leadership team and we get together and we
offer classes. We have trained the Seguin Police Department. We have trained the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Department. We have office programs for people here in the Seguin area but I'd like to get the word out, we are here for you," said Vinson. Vinson says part of this month's effort is to also help the public recognize mental illness and its symptoms. "With mental illness, we are talking about not only what people normally
on their friends and ask them how are they feeling, because that is a sign if you are sleeping too much or you can't sleep at all," said Vinson. Vinson says she no longer wants the discussion on mental illness to be taboo. She says when it comes to mental health, there is a way for everyone to be a part of the solution. "And, just to get advice, just know where to go -- I need help with my individual, my loved one that is living with a mental illness. I do not know who to call. I do not know what to do. I answer those questions all the time and May is Mental Health Month so therefore, in lieu of that, I put up signs at each corner (of Central Park) that say NAMI. I've also put up realtor boxes -- if they take one, they have fliers about NAMI, about the programs, what we stand for, if you want to join NAMI, how do you join NAMI. I'd like for people to go down there and get a free flier and give us a call. We are here to help you," said Vinson. In addition to providing free literature around downtown's Central Park, Vinson has also decorated the surrounding light poles with green ribbons recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month. Those seeking assistance or who would like to sign up as a member of the 501c(3) organization are asked to email bvinsonnamigc@gmail.com. They may also sign-up for classes by calling 830-433-9036.

City of Seguin offers relief to local hotels, motels during pandemic crisis By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The city is also doing more to try to help local hotels and motels. The Seguin City Council recently approved two items aimed at providing some relief to hotels and motels that have occupancy tax payments due now to the city of Seguin. Seguin and Main Street Director Kyle Kramm says the first item will allow the hotels to stretch out their currently due payments over the next couple of months. "Some of the hotels had asked for a postponement or a deferral and so we gave them a 30 day deferral if they asked for it but we are asking to extend that deferral with a 25 percent down payment due by May 31 and then three additional payments of the same amount so that they will be paid in full by August 31," said Kramm. The second item approved by the council provides a little more relief for the motels. It will provide a rebate based on the amount of occupancy tax they collected on behalf of the city last year. "The hotels that have collected over $100,000 in

hotel occupancy tax, would receive $5,000 and then the hotels that collected $50,000 to $100,000 would receive a $3,500 rebate and those that collected $25,000 to $50,000 would receive a $2,500 rebate
and those who collected $10,000 to $25,000 would receive a $1,500 rebate and then finally, those that collected $1,000 to $10,000 would get a $1,000 rebate," said Kramm.
Kramm says hotel stays are way down in the city currently. He says 25 percent occupancy would be a good day during this pandemic. That means there will be even less occupancy
tax money coming to the city later this year. That also will impact several nonprofit groups that get a portion of occupancy tax proceeds in the city of Seguin.

2019-2020 Teachers of the Year celebrated in the Seguin ISD
TEACHERS, continued from page 1
Those named as Teacher of the Year for their respective schools include, Katie Chabot, of Ball Early Childhood Center; Jana Seibert, of Jefferson Avenue Elementary School; Esmerelda Vielma, of Koennecke Elementary School; Sarah Klesel, of McQueeney Elementary School; Ashley Arthur, of Patlan Elementary School; Patricia Garcia, of Rodriguez Elementary School; Heidi
Ulrich, of Vogel Elementary School; Cristy Wilke, of Weinert Elementary School; Amanda Conner, of Jim Barnes Middle School; Tommie Jackson, of A. J. Briesemeister Middle School; Mary Grise, of Discipline Alternative School; Selma Kovars, of Mercer-Blumberg Learning Center and Aundrea Schneebeli, of Seguin High School. Each of these teachers will now go on to compete for the district’s title of Seguin ISD
Elementary Teacher of the Year and Secondary Teacher of the Year. Hoffmann says although a committee has been assigned to select the overall district winners, the process will obviously be a bit different this year. "Annually, the Seguin ISD recognizes our outstanding Teachers of the Year and these teachers come from each of the 13 campuses. We have one per campus and these teachers are nominated
by their peers and ultimately selected to represent their campus in our Teacher of the Year contest, for a lack of a better term, so what we do is we have an evaluation committee and we look at these 13 teachers. We look at their essays. We look at them through an interview and normally that is done live and in person but this year, we will be using ZOOM or a similar program to interview these Teachers of the Year. Unfortunately, we won't be able to make our classroom observations which is part of
the evaluation process in a normal year. So, we will have some criteria and we will look at that in the coming couple of weeks before we close down the school year and from the 13 teachers, the committee will get them and determine an Elementary and a Secondary Teacher of the Year for the Seguin ISD," said Hoffmann. District officials say they hope to announce the district wide Teacher of the Year selections in the next couple of weeks if not sooner.

White House Press Secretary on National Testing Strategy (Washington, DC) -- White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany [[ kay-lee MACK-en-aynee ]] says it is "simply nonsensical" to test everyone in America for coronavirus. During a press briefing, McEnany said if the U.S. tested every American, they would have to "test them again in an hour." She said testing should only be conducted in hotspots, such as nursing homes and meat packing facilities. McEnany says the U.S. needs to be strategic with testing because our hotspots per capita are higher than any other country. She added that this will be a governor-led effort moving forward.
White House Press Secretary on COVID-19 Task Force (Washington, DC) -- White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany [[ kay-lee MACK-en-aynee ]] says the Coronavirus Task Force is "here to stay." During a press briefing, McEnany says the task force has gotten this country through a global pandemic. She added the U.S. death toll is far lower than original projections because of its efforts. When pushed further, McEnany referred to President Trump's earlier comments about keeping the task force, instead of winding it down. Earlier, Trump said he thought the task force would be winding down by now, but he had no idea how "popular" it is and how much the public appreciates the daily briefings.

White House Press Secretary Weighs in President Trump Not Wearing a Mask
(Washington, DC) -- White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany [[ kay-lee MACK-en-aynee ]] says the federal government is not going to require Americans to wear masks. During a press briefing, McEnany said "it is the choice of the individual as to whether they wear a mask." When pressed about President Trump not wearing one, McEnany says the president has been following guidelines wearing masks when necessary. Yesterday, President Trump visited a Honeywell facility in Arizona that has been restructured to manufacture N-95 masks during the coronavirus pandemic. Trump did not wear a mask but says he did so after the Honeywell executives told him he didn't have to. McEnany added that over 70 million N-95 masks have been distributed across the U.S.
Former CDC Director: 'Long And Difficult' Road Ahead In Fight Against COVID-19
(Washington, DC) -- A former CDC director isn't mincing words when it comes to describing the country's fight against the coronavirus. Dr. Thomas Friedentold a House subcommittee that our war against COVID-19 will be long and difficult and that we need to think strategically now to prevent future public healthdisasters. Frieden called the pandemic a "terrible tragedy" and predicted that the coronavirus that causes it is here to stay. He also called for health care workers, other essential staff and the most vulnerable to be protected.
