COVID-19 testing slated today at a Guadalupe County nursing home According to a written statement by officials at Silver Tree Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, they say they “had people” connected with its facility test positive for COVID-19. They also state that its medical director, resident’s attending physicians, and state survey agencies have all been notified of the positive cases and that actions are being taken. They note, “we have a dedicated infection preventionist that is ensuring we are complying with all recommended procedures. We are optimistic that with all of these measures in place the outbreak will be contained.” According to Silver Tree officials, staff and residents continue to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, per Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and are continuing all measures of social distancing practices. Pinder says like hospitals, nursing homes in Guadalupe County have remained very proactive in preventing an outbreak within their facilities and is very surprised by this latest news in Schertz.

courtesy photo FB page By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Guadalupe County) – COVID-19 testing is expected today at a Guadalupe County nursing home. Following the positive results for one of its patients, an across the board effort to test each staff member and resident is now well underway at a nursing home in Schertz. Patrick Pinder, the emergency management coordinator for Guadalupe County, shared the news with members of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court on Tuesday. Pinder says the public was made aware of that positive case late Monday night.

“The governor announced (and) this came straight from the White House, Vice President (Mike) Pence talked about it – they want to start testing every nursing home staff member and patient. This is going to start I hope pretty soon. I don’t have a timeframe on this but this is what he talked about on our conference call with the governor. It’s kind of ironic because in Guadalupe County, we were made aware of a nursing home that had a positive patient. The state is going to come in and start testing that facility. There’s 127 staff members and 87 patients that will be tested at that facility. It’s the Silver Tree Nursing Home Facility in the Schertz area,” said Pinder.

“Since the beginning of COVID, all nursing home facilities went down on a lockdown scenario with the governor’s order. I don’t know how this patient tested positive. I don’t know where the patient is at,” said Pinder. Again, on Monday, the White House urged the nation’s governors to order coronavirus testing for all nursing home residents and staff. Health officials say for most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms such as a fever and cough that can clear up in two to three weeks but for older folks and those with existing health problems – such as those in nursing homes – could fall victim to a more severe illness, including pneumonia and even death. The testing for nursing homes across the state is expected to occur within the next two weeks.

Former officer, now businessman shows his support to Seguin PD Officers By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – An Edward Jones financial advisor knows a good investment when he sees one. This time, however, he is investing in the officers at the Seguin Police Department. As part of National Police Week (May 10-16), local businessman Steve Alyea has chosen to gift each officer of the department with a $50 bill.

“He said no, I want everyone to get something which it ended up being because of the blessings of a few friends that I told, it ended up being that we had enough prizes for everyone to win something. But at the time

Steve. He would do something like that.’ So, again that is to show that he never left our department. His spirit, his love, his passion is still here with us and he’s still a friend no matter where he is

Vasquez says the Seguin PD operates in a very generous community and appreciates everyone who has donated prizes for today’s special raffle drawing. She says thanks to the Seguin Police Alumni Association, officers will also be treated to a special meal.

Alyea, a former Seguin PD officer himself, says he knows the importance of this week and has always appreciated those who took the time to show their support. Each year, handwritten notes from kids always did the trick but because that fine artwork from kids was unavailable this year due to schools closing, he wanted to do his part and help Officer Hope Vasquez in her assignment to coordinate this week’s appreciation efforts for the officers. “I remember when I got those, it meant a lot to me and it kind of bothered me that they weren’t going to get those this year and Hope was trying to get donations from people in the community to put in those bags for the officers and I said ‘sure, I’d love to do something’ and so Hope shared her idea about doing a raffle for each shift and I just didn’t like the fact that some officers weren’t going to get something and I said, how many do you have total because when I was doing police work, of course, there was not as many as there are now. I decided to get a little something for each of them so everybody would walk away with something,” said Alyea. Officer Vasquez, of course, was overwhelmed by the gesture and is thankful to Alyea for supporting the 59 officers.

Alyea says although Police Week is being observed this week, a thank you note anytime of the year is just as good if not better. “I would ask anybody out there and it doesn’t have to be anything big. It doesn’t have to be a big gift or expensive or it does not have to be a gift at all. It can just be a handwritten note to share not just this week but anytime that you feel like saying thank you for being there, I think it’s a good thing to do,” said Alyea.

Even after years of having been gone from the department, Vasquez says she appreciates Alyea for supporting his Seguin PD family.

when I spoke with Steve, my goal was to at least have half the prizes which was 30 so that at least half of the department gets prizes and he said, no I want to make sure that they all get something so he brought that money in. I was at awe and I was very emotional because I was just expecting a raffle prize and I gave him choices and he decided to do his own thing and came in and surprised us with that and I’m just speechless to even think about what he did and when I tell these officers about it, they say ‘yeah that’s crazy

at,” said Vasquez. Alyea says there’s no group that works harder at their jobs than the men and women of the Seguin PD. “It just makes you feel great. I mean it is a hard job to do and there’s not a lot of thank yous out there but you still do the job everyday the best that you can and when you get a thank you or a we appreciate what you are doing and we know you are there and thank you for being there, it means a lot,” said Alyea.

“Of course, we have a lot of officers who don’t know who Steve Alyea is but Steve Alyea was in our department for a short period of time and then he changed careers but he never forgot about us and he always kept in touch with some of the guys and they still get together and he knows the sacrifice that we do every day especially with this pandemic that we have. That makes it even more because we have to leave our families and be exposed. So, he knows it is really rough for us right now and he wants to show the appreciation that you are still coming, we never close no matter what we have rain, cold weather and now with this the corona virus. We don’t stop. We continue. Our mission is to never stop and he knows that sacrifice that we do,” said Vasquez. Like Alyea, Vasquez says another community member is also showing her support by giving each officer a $25 gift card. Vasquez says instead of getting her refund for her VIP table for the Cinderella Ball, this person instead is splitting and sharing that money with the officers.

Sports Brought to you exclusively by First Commercial Bank Matadors release 2020 varsity football schedule

(Seguin) - Assuming that the Seguin ISD and UIL calendars for the 2020-21 school year don't change due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Seguin Matadors' varsity football schedule for the upcoming season is all set.

The Matadors' open date is Friday, Sept. 11. After the first two district games against Veterans Memorial at home and

New Braunfels-Canyon on the road, Seguin fills the bye week in the 12-5ADivision I schedule with its final non-

district game - a home tilt against La Vernia on Oct. 2. The Mats play a total of six road games and only four at home during the regular season.

The first varsity game at the newly rebuilt Matador Stadium is slated for Friday, Sept. 18 - the District 12-5A-Division I opener against San Antonio-Veterans Memorial.

In addition to Veterans Memorial and La Vernia, Seguin hosts San AntonioMcCollum for Homecoming on Oct. 16 and concludes the home schedule against Kyle-Lehman on Oct. 30.

Seguin will play two pre-season scrimmages on the road, against BudaHays on Friday, Aug. 14 at Shelton Stadium, and against Austin-Bowie on Thursday, Aug. 20 at Burger Stadium.

After New Braunfels-Canyon, the Matadors' district road trips include Harlandale on Thursday Oct. 8, BudaJohnson at Shelton Stadium on Oct. 23, and Dripping Springs to finish the regular season on Nov. 6.

The Matadors open the regular season with consecutive non-district road games. Seguin visits San Antonio-Taft on Thursday, Aug. 27 and heads to Unicorn Stadium for the Guadalupe River Bowl against New Braunfels on Friday, Sept. 4. From that point, the schedule is a bit unconventional compared to most seasons.

The UIL football playoffs begin the weekend of Nov. 12-14, and culminate in the state championships at AT&T Stadium in Arlington Dec. 16-19.

All-District running-back Marques Washington (1,212 yds, 19 TD in 2019) and his Seguin teammates hope to return to a normal routine in time for the 2020 regular season. Photo by Dustin Wyatt.

The live broadcasts of all Seguin Matador varsity football games will be available on KWED 1580-AM and online at Seguintoday.com.

White House Press Secretary on National Testing Strategy (Washington, DC) -- White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany [[ kay-lee MACK-en-aynee ]] says it is "simply nonsensical" to test everyone in America for coronavirus. During a press briefing, McEnany said if the U.S. tested every American, they would have to "test them again in an hour." She said testing should only be conducted in hotspots, such as nursing homes and meat packing facilities. McEnany says the U.S. needs to be strategic with testing because our hotspots per capita are higher than any other country. She added that this will be a governor-led effort moving forward.

White House Press Secretary on COVID-19 Task Force (Washington, DC) -- White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany [[ kay-lee MACK-en-aynee ]] says the Coronavirus Task Force is "here to stay." During a press briefing, McEnany says the task force has gotten this country through a global pandemic. She added the U.S. death toll is far lower than original projections because of its efforts. When pushed further, McEnany referred to President Trump's earlier comments about keeping the task force, instead of winding it down. Earlier, Trump said he thought the task force would be winding down by now, but he had no idea how "popular" it is and how much the public appreciates the daily briefings.

White House Press Secretary Weighs in President Trump Not Wearing a Mask

(Washington, DC) -- White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany [[ kay-lee MACK-en-aynee ]] says the federal government is not going to require Americans to wear masks. During a press briefing, McEnany said "it is the choice of the individual as to whether they wear a mask." When pressed about President Trump not wearing one, McEnany says the president has been following guidelines wearing masks when necessary. Yesterday, President Trump visited a Honeywell facility in Arizona that has been restructured to manufacture N-95 masks during the coronavirus pandemic. Trump did not wear a mask but says he did so after the Honeywell executives told him he didn't have to. McEnany added that over 70 million N-95 masks have been distributed across the U.S.

Former CDC Director: 'Long And Difficult' Road Ahead In Fight Against COVID-19

(Washington, DC) -- A former CDC director isn't mincing words when it comes to describing the country's fight against the coronavirus. Dr. Thomas Friedentold a House subcommittee that our war against COVID-19 will be long and difficult and that we need to think strategically now to prevent future public healthdisasters. Frieden called the pandemic a "terrible tragedy" and predicted that the coronavirus that causes it is here to stay. He also called for health care workers, other essential staff and the most vulnerable to be protected.
