Dozens of float entries show up for nursing home, healthcare hero parade By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Even the masks could not hide the big smiles of Seguin nursing home residents and their superhero healthcare workers who were saluted Wednesday with their very own community parade. The parade was part of a local effort to celebrate Segun’s seven local nursing homes and assisted living facilities who continue to operate under strict quarantine measures. While restrictions for other operations are being lifted, the safety measures for nursing homes remain tight as healthcare workers work around the clock during this COVID-19 pandemic. The parade also held in observance of National Nursing Home Week welcomed well over two dozen parade entries. The first stop on the route was Hacienda Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation on North King Street. Patients were safely social distanced in their chairs along the front and back sides of the facility. Star Sutton, the activity director at Hacienda Oaks, says to see her residents cheering and waving signs and pom poms made for an incredible day. See PARADE, page 3

Seguin ISD to begin discussion on next year’s school calendar By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees will begin to visualize the 2020-2021 school year during tonight’s special board workshop. Trustees are set to discuss the updates to the upcoming instructional school calendar. In preparing for the fall, the Texas Education Agency has stated that the new school year “is likely to be disrupted.” It also states that building a calendar that plans for and anticipates scenarios such as what was experienced with COVID-19 will help minimize disruption. TEA officials also note that “calendars must also consider how to adjust for learning loss as a result of current instructional interruptions.” The reported information, according to the TEA, also allows districts to make certain changes and adjustments on a local level – perhaps moving the state’s districts in a variety of directions. Tonight’s agenda item is only for discussion.

No official action on next year’s school calendar will be taken during tonight’s meeting. Also, on the table is an update on the budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Trustees are slated to review its current financial health and is expected to discuss the pandemic and its impact on the upcoming budget. Due to COVID-19, tonight’s board workshop will be available to the public via telephone and video conference. Members of the public may submit comments to be made during the meeting. Those comments, however, should be received no later than noon today via email at pnramirez@seguin.k12.tx.us. Those comments will be read during the Audience with the Board portion of the meeting. Those wishing to join the board’s video conference may also do so by clicking the Zoom link found on the school board agenda. That agenda can be found at seguin.k12.tx.us.

Community wide parade honors nursing home residents plus their healthcare heroes PARADE, continued from page 1 “I am so glad we live in Seguin and that we all came together for once purpose and to make everybody happy because the residents at the nursing home have been quarantined since the middle of March and no families or nothing. I only do Facetime with families that have an iPhone. Other than that, they are not able to see them so this was something that they needed and I’m so grateful that we have such a great community,” said Sutton. Misti AbrameitGuenther, who helped coordinate the event, says the vision she had for the morning parade was rolled out perfectly. “It was an amazing morning. The Seguin community rallied and brought so many smiles to so many different people, residents, staff, our community just watched along the street and honked in awe of all the good work that was done and my heart is just smiling from all of the good things that have been said and how much joy it brought,” said Guenther. Sutton says it’s because of caring individuals like Guenther who give nursing home employees the chance to reboot and work even harder for this special group of residents. “The turnout was wonderful. I mean everybody just came together and Misti, she’s the bomb! A lot of people are really superheroes and she just does so much and she thinks about so many people, not just her or the Relay for Life.

She thinks about everybody. I just love her,” said Sutton. As for the participation, Guenther says she cannot even begin to express her sincere appreciation to all those who took part. Those participating in the parade included such groups as elected officials, businesses, and school groups. She says even family members of the some of the nursing home residents came out to also join in on the celebration with hopes of finally seeing their loved ones.

Courtesy Nesbit Living FB Page enough for coming and participating,” said Guenther.

“More than anything, I just can’t thank all of our officials enough that came and allowed – I mean we had such a good presence from our Seguin PD, our sheriff’s department, our fire department. They came out and really supported the cause and made sure that we were safe getting everywhere and made sure we got to every facility and so I can’t thank all of those people

Prior to the parade’s arrival, residents and staff were treated to live music by Jay Pfannstiel who performed in the back of a pickup truck. Pfannstiel was also among the coordinators for the event. Many of those lucky enough to live or work along the parade route also noted on social media that the event served as a beacon of hope and as a sign of resilience for the rest of the community as it pushes its way toward healing.

Fauci Warns About Re-Opening Country Too Quickly

(Washington, DC) -- Dr. Anthony Fauci [[ FOW-chee ]] is warning about trying to reopen the country too quickly during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Testifying in a video conference during a Senate hearing, the NIH veteran said it could lead to severe consequences. Fauci told the New York Times this week that a premature re-opening might prompt "needless suffering and death." In the Senate hearing, Fauci was also pressed about students returning to campuses in the late summer and early fall. He said it's unrealistic to think that a coronavirus treatment or vaccine will be available, calling it a "bridge too far."

Sen. Schumer To Pres. Trump: 'Listen To Dr. Fauci. Follow Science, Not Your Ego' (Washington, DC) -- Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer is pleading with

President Trump to listen to his top public health officials. Speaking to reporters at the Capitol, the New York Democrat addressed the President directly by saying "President Trump, listen to Dr. Fauci [[ FOW-chee ]]. Follow science, not your ego." At a Senate hearing earlier in the day, Fauci warned of dire consequences if the country reopens sooner than it should. That was after he told the New York Times that reopening too soon could lead to "needless suffering and death."

Fauci: 2nd Wave Of Coronavirus "Entirely Conceivable & Possible" Arizona Governor: Gyms, Pools Can Reopen Wednesday (Washington, DC) -- Dr. Anthony Fauci [[ FOW-chee ]] thinks a second wave of coronavirus in the U.S. is "entirely conceivable and possible" in the fall. Testifying in a video conference during a Senate hearing, the NIH veteran expressed hope that a second wave could be handled very effectively to prevent it from becoming another uncontrolled outbreak. Fauci said the U.S. is headed in the right direction on the coronavirus but does not have total control of the deadly outbreak. Fauci also warned about trying to re-open the U.S. too soon.

WORLD-CLASS SURGICAL CARE Close to home.

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Gyms and pools in Arizona will be allowed to reopen on Wednesday. In a news conference, Governor Doug Ducey said precautions will have to be put in place, including limiting the number of visitors and social distancing guidelines. To this point, Arizona has already allowed the reopening of retailers, hairdressers and barbers, and dinein service. Ducey will also let his stay-at-home order expire at the end of the week. After Friday, major league sporting events can be held in the state, but no fans will be allowed to attend those events.
