Seguin ISD Superintendent officially recognized as one of the best in the state
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Seguin ISD
Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez is getting some much-deserved recognition - recognition he says he’s dedicating to all students. Dr. Gutierrez on Friday was announced as the winner of the Region 20 Superintendent of the Year Contest. Region 20 consists of 88 school districts across 19 counties. Of those districts, which includes all of Bexar County, only eight school districts, including the Seguin ISD submitted a nomination for the region title.
The announcement was made at the Seguin ISD Administration Building during a surprise ceremony attended by Seguin ISD trustees, principals, teachers, administrative staff, family members, plus the Seguin High School Matador Band. Also in attendance was Region 20’s Executive Director Dr. Jeff Goldhorn, who presented the award on behalf of the members of the Region 20 Education Service Center (ESC).
In accepting the award, Dr. Gutierrez tells the Seguin Daily News that the honor deserves to be shared.
“I just want to dedicate the award
to the students in the Seguin ISD. I am proud of our students who are shining every single day. They are working hard and so this award is dedicated to them. If it weren’t for our students who are doing an exceptional job across the district, we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now and so it’s because of our students and then of course, all of the stakeholders who support our students especially our staff that Seguin ISD gets to shine and Region 20,” said Gutierrez.
According to Region 20, the award is based on outstanding leadership, management, school climate, school board-superintendent relations, school improvement and instructional leadership, fiscal management, and school-community relations.
As a district and as a host of community of stakeholders, Dr. Gutierrez believes that the Seguin ISD has been moving along the right path. He says this recognition only engages the full picture of all great things in the Seguin ISD.

Donations, volunteers needed for annual Badges, Bikes and Tykes event
(Seguin) – The Seguin Police Department is counting down the days until this weekend’s Badges, Bikes and Tykes event at Max Starcke Park. The free family event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the large pavilion.
Sarah Wallace, the community engagement officer for the Seguin PD, says in preparation for the event, the police department would like to first thank those who recently stepped up and donated bikes to the police department following challenges with a supply shortage. She says after making a public plea, donations immediately rolled in.
“We can never have too many bikes. The more bikes that get donated, the more children that get a bike and we can get bikes out to so when it comes to bikes, I always say there are never too many. We have
met our goals this year with bike donations after we asked for some help with the shortage in bikes that we were experiencing so we are super fortunate for the community for stepping up and helping us out there,” said Wallace.
In preparing for the event, Wallace says, the police department is also offering other ways for people to help make this year’s event a success.
“If anybody is looking to help out, a couple of ways that they can -- if you want to donate a bike, a case of water, soda or if you are just looking to get out of the house and you want to donate your time, we always can use volunteers to come out and help us out with the games. If you are out there, it’s just such a fun event for the kids as well as -- I know all of our officers have a great
time. It’s one of my favorite events. You’ll see me running around having a blast like a giant 30-yearold kid and it’s just a really really great time so we invite everyone to come on out. If they want to come check it out even if they don’t have littles, you are welcome to come and just enjoy the environment itself,” said Wallace.
The event, hosted annually by the Seguin PD and the Seguin Fire Department offers free games and activities for local kids. A free hot dog lunch is also provided. Each child in attendance is also given a chance to win one of several bikes that will be raffled throughout the event. Anyone wishing to donate to the event are asked to drop off their donations to the Seguin PD or contact Officer Wallace at 830386-2582.

Superintendent, continued.
“It really goes beyond the STAAR test, and I know some could argue well we are not a rated district. You’ve got to look at more than that test on one single day and if you really dig and look at the data, we’ve had the best-performing year since 2010. This is a result of our community efforts to pass bonds, our financial stability, our accountability when it comes to academics -- what we are doing with post-secondary readiness, our programming, whether it’s fine arts, athletics, dual language, LiiNK. This is really a culmination of everything that we are doing and it’s being recognized and celebrated across the region and we were going against superintendents from other school districts who are doing amazing things and any of the other seven would have been great representatives for this award to represent Region 20 but our work is being recognized and I could not be any more proud to be the Superintendent of Seguin ISD,” said Gutierrez.
During the surprise ceremony, Goldhorn touched upon several of Dr. Gutierrez’s achievements and initiatives that have come into play during his six-year tenure with the district, including academic growth, the creation and redesign of a strategic plan, the successful passage of $131.5 million for Bond 2022, fostering relationships with the school board and nurturing partnerships with city and county officials and community members.
He also echoed the words as written by Board President Alejandro Guerra: “His personality complements his leadership skills that are necessary to affect change within an organization of more than 7,000 students and 1,100 employees. Even keeled, well-spoken and friendly, he articulates in a manner that is welcoming and easy to understand. He has a unique ability to speak to people at their level, interpreting things through their lens.”
Also noted during the award celebration were Dr.
Gutierrez’s efforts to engage stakeholders, such as effectively utilizing social media to tell Seguin ISD’s story, creating a Superintendent’s Student Advisory team of students from each campus who meet monthly to share their voice, and funding a scholarship for Seguin High School graduates who pursue a degree in education.
Goldhorn stated, “We share your excitement as such a great accomplishment and thank you for your vision to support your students and the community of Seguin ISD.”
As Region 20 Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Gutierrez advances to the pool of school district leaders who will be considered by the Texas Association of School Boards State Selection Committee this summer.
Dr. Gutierrez says he is optimistic that his leadership as envisioned by those in the community will help warrant any and all deserving recognition.
“It really is a great feeling to know that the Seguin ISD is going to be represented at the state level. Out of all the superintendents across the state, there are going to be 20 who are vying to become the next Superintendent of the Year and so I’ll be learning over the next few days what the next steps are and I’m pretty certain that it is going to be a rigorous process just as it was to go through this round to become the Superintendent of the Year to represent the school district. It was a really intense application process and vetting to go through that. There was an opportunity to interview with board members who represent districts from across the region. So, this next level, I’m pretty certain is going to be even more rigorous but I believe that we are doing some amazing things for students in Seguin that there is a really good chance that the Seguin ISD Superintendent is going to be represented within that Top 5 that they’ll name in the coming weeks to go for the Superintendent of the Year for Texas,” said Dr. Gutierrez.
Dr. Gutierrez’s recognition follows the Region 20 School Board of the Year title awarded to the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees in 2022.

No. 20 Texas Lutheran Competes in Trinity LAST CHANCE Meet
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The 20th-ranked Texas Lutheran men’s track and field team continued their push to the 2023 NCAA DivisionIII National Championships as the Bulldogs traveled a small contingent to San Antonio to compete in the Trinity Last Chance Meet in San Antonio on Sunday.
Gerrit Twitero (McQueeney/Seguin) matched his record setting mark from a week ago on Sunday, clearing 2.10m to out pace two Division-I jumpers from Incarnate Word and win the high jump. Twitero remains atop of the NCAA Division-III performance list less than two weeks ahead of the National Championships held May 25-27 in Rochester, New York.
Elijah Jefferson (San Antonio/Construction Careers Academy) finished first amongst Division-III sprinters in the 100m dash with a time of 10.49 seconds, one-hundredth of a second off his personal record that currently ranks 14th in NCAA Division-III. Jefferson, alongside Wyatt Wilson (New Braunfels/New Braunfels), Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen), and Bryce Powell-Chimene (Dayton/ Dayton), who rank 12th in NCAA Division-III as a team, would run their second fastest time of the season in the 4x100m relay at 41.10 seconds.
Ezra Acero (San Antonio/Harlan) finished first amongst Division-III competitors in the pole vault with a mark of 4.61m.
In throws, freshman Dalon Harris (Garland/Lakeview Centennial) finished first amongst Division-III throwers with a 15.02m mark in the shot put.

Coach Holland’s Comments: “I’m happy with our performances. The men’s 4x100 ran their 2nd fastest time this season, and we were hesitant with how Wyatt would do coming back after straining his hamstring in the 100 at Conference. He backed off a little and we still ran a respectable time. Then in the 100 our guys ran well again this week - no complaints there. And Gerrit tied his personal best of 2.10 again this week and made great tries at 2.14. The weather worked out great and we are looking forward to heading to California this week to see if we can get a smidge better.”

Brenda Sue Schievelbein, 64, passed away unexpectedly in her home on May 5th, 2023. Her family is deeply saddened by her sudden death.
Brenda was born on March 11th, 1959, in Seguin, Texas to Carole Jean (Schwab) and Virgil Albert Schievelbein. She is the oldest of 4 siblings. She graduated from Seguin High School in 1977 and continued her studies at Southwest Texas State University. Brenda worked as an Optometry Technician and administrative assistant for many years. She was also a member of First Baptist Church in Seguin.
Brenda was a fun spirited soul who embraced many passions. She was very creative and used her talents in many ways including cross stitch, sewing, and art. Every Christmas she loved making and sharing her famous “Puppy Chow” with all her friends and family. She loved music and enjoyed playing the piano. Later in life she took up gardening and was known by her neighbors to have the prettiest front yard. Brenda did not have any children, so her nieces and nephews were her pride and joy. With her beautiful youthful spirit, she always knew how to keep the kids entertained!
Brenda is survived by her mother, Carole Schievelbein; sisters, Cyndi Johnson (Kyle), and Lori McCoy; brother, Timothy Schievelbein (fiancée Kelly Follis); nieces and nephews, Chasity Schneider (Bryan), Kelsey McCoy, Evan Schievelbein (Callie), Andi Schievelbein, Kara Linnens (Corey), and Kylee Johnson; great nieces and nephews, Chance, Tatum, Tripp and Ty Schievelbein, Brynley Grace Schneider and Gracie Belle Linnens; numerous cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

Brenda was a beautiful person inside and out. She cared deeply for the people around her. She was so kind and passionate and would give her last dollar to someone who she thought needed it more than her. She will be forever missed. Until we meet again.

Two Ringworm Cases Reported In New York City
(New York, NY) -- Two cases of drug-resistant ringworm infections are being reported in New York City. The CDC says both patients didn’t improve with the standard treatments. A dermatologist in the city alerted public health officials in February identifying the infections as a form of ringworm that has come up in South Asia. Both patients are female, one of whom had traveled to Bangladesh where she developed the rash. These are the first reported cases of the drug-resistant ringworm in the U.S.
Homeless Deaths From Fentanyl Way Up In L.A.
(Los Angeles, CA) - The rate of deaths among homeless people in Los Angeles is skyrocketing. It’s up by 55 percent, and that’s mostly because of fentanyl. The county Department of Public Health looked at deaths between 2019 and 2021. It says the percentage of overdose deaths blamed on fentanyl have nearly tripled.
Missouri Lawmakers Send Transgender-Related Bills To Parson
(Jefferson City, MO) -- Missouri lawmakers are sending controversial transgender related legislation to Governor Mike Parson. House lawmakers also separately signed off on legislation that would require transgender athletes to play on sports teams aligned with the sex on their birth certificate. Parson is expected to sign the restrictions.
CO Doctor Says Marijuana Users Need More Anesthesia
(Aurora, CO) -- Doctors are beginning to see links between the use of marijuana and a need to increase anesthesia during surgical procedures. A doctor at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital says he’s been asking patients for years if they use the drug because he’s seen that it takes more anesthesia to keep them asleep during surgery. He also says marijuana users require more pain medication after surgery to help them cope. The doctor tells KDVR-TV that the connection between marijuana and anesthesia has not been extensively studied but should be. He also hopes patients will overcome their fears about honestly answering questions about marijuana use so they can be treated fully and effectively when hospitalized.
