A break in the day causes 1-10 closure

(Seguin) -- All lanes of I-10 near Highway 90 are open again in Seguin. A westbound lane on the interstate was shutdown for hours Sunday to allow TXDOT crews to repair a large hole in the bridge deck over Highway 90.

Drivers were reporting that they were able to see right through the hole that was created by the concrete that fell from the outside driving lane.

Caterpillar to invest millions here in Guadalupe County

Schertz facility to add 25 positions

to begin building new industrial engine

(Guadalupe County) -- Guadalupe County will soon be home to the all-new Cat® C13D industrial engine.

Caterpillar Inc. recently announced a $90 million investment to prepare its facilities in Schertz and Seguin to produce the new diesel engine.

Caterpillar Inc. is the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, off-highway diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and dieselelectric locomotives.

Sharing the news to both facilities is Mark Stratton, vice president and general manager of Caterpillar's industrial power systems - large engines.

"We appreciate the support from the local community as we prepare our Seguin and Schertz facilities to produce the C13D engine," said Stratton. "The Caterpillar team in Texas will produce the quality parts and engines we need for our customers as we help them build a better, more sustainable world."

Those lost in law enforcement community remembered

Zwicke leads last Memorial Service as sheriff

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County is remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in serving and protecting. The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office recently saluted those who have not only died but also those who continue to put their lives at risk in the law enforcement community. The Memorial Service is hosted each year by the sheriff’s office and commemorates National Law Enforcement Officer Week (May 12-18); National Correctional Officer Week (May 5-11) as well as National Nurses’ Week (May 6-12.

Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke says in 2023 alone, 118 names were added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall in Washington, DC. Zwicke says 11 of those names were from Texas while 25 were K-9’s who also lost their lives in the line of duty.

“It was something that I thought was a very important thing to do to honor the men and women that paid the ultimate sacrifice and to also honor and thank these people for the job they do each and every day -- not only the sheriff’s office but the Seguin Police Department, the Highway Patrol, the city of Cibolo, Marion, everybody out there. We are all in this together and I appreciate the partnership. So, this is something I want to do to keep it going and

to be recognized,” said Zwicke.

Among those in attendance was Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher. Kutscher says this year’s memorial service marks a bittersweet milestone for the retiring sheriff who began this observance shortly after taking office.

“The sheriff has always been extremely persistent on focusing on employees, on the people that do the work, individuals in our community that protect our citizens and he’s always really pushed hard to remember the fallen officers, holds a place in his heart for remembrance and gratitude for the families, for the co-workers, the loved ones. He’s done a great job bringing attention to those fallen officers,” said Kutscher.

Not only did Zwicke pay tribute to those new names on the list but he reflected on the lives that have been lost over the years in the line of duty in Guadalupe County beginning with Cattle Inspector Henry Batey in 1877. The list also includes Deputy Richard McCoy in 1881; Deputy John Porter in 1906; Seguin Police Officer Joe Carrillo in 1975; Deputy Daniel Ross in 1994 and Goliad Sheriff’s Office Deputy Clyde-Kincaid who also served this area in 1999.

Zwicke says from the very beginning, he knew this memorial service would be important to the community. He says it not only keeps history at the forefront but it serves as a reminder to all officers that they are appreciated every time they put on their uniforms.

“To me, every time one of those officers are killed in the line of duty, a part of me dies. It just kills me every time it happens,” said Zwicke. “We get the officer down (notice) on our phones each and every time an officer is killed -- almost everyday across our nation.”

This year, Zwicke also recognized all those Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office employees who they lost over the last 10 years with the most recent being Captain John Koch who died in April after a tough battle with Leukemia.

“Maintenance crews quickly responded to the location to assess the damage and determine the course of action. Crews removed the damaged concrete and replaced it with a rapid setting concrete, which allowed TxDOT to reopen the outside lane of I-10 within 6 hours,” said Brown.

Brown says while inspection data on bridges is considered sensitive information, there are no plans to release too many details on what happened. However, she says TxDOT is doing its work on ensuring

the integrity of all of its roadways.

“Bridges are frequently subjected to high traffic volumes, heavy freight traffic, and environmental factors that can contribute to overstressed concrete where cracks are formed. Although this is not common, it does happen. TxDOT takes precautionary measure to help avoid incidents like this by inspecting bridges bi-annually,” said Brown.

The damage was discovered Sunday morning, and the repairs were completed around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Caterpillar, continued.

The company says the C13D is a new 13-liter diesel engine platform designed to "achieve best-inclass power, density and fuel efficiency." They add that the engine "optimizes the performance of heavyduty off-highway applications such as agricultural production, material handling, construction, mining, and aircraft ground support."

The investment includes new equipment installations at both facilities. This includes $70 million in Schertz to make C13D engine components, and $20 million in Seguin to assemble the engines. The investment will also create 25 jobs in Schertz starting in 2026.

Meanwhile, company officials say the new equipment installations will not impact current operations, which include manufacturing Cat® and Perkins engines and generator sets.

The C13D engine production is slated to start in 2026.

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Seven Bulldogs: Ezra Acero (San Antonio//Harlan), Parker Cabra (Schertz/Randolph), Rickey Franks (Rockport/Rockport-Fulton), Justin Freeney (Montgomery/Lake Creek), Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen), Dalon Harris (Garland/ Lakeview Centennial), Bryce Powell-Chimene (Dayton/Dayton), secured All-Region honors from the USTFCCCA for their incredible outdoor seasons. All-Region honors for the 2024 NCAA Division-III Outdoor Track & Field season were announced on Friday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the conclusion of the regular season.

Top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region honors, in addition to each of the members of a top-3 ranked relay team.

Only USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.

Ezra Acero earned All-Region honors in the pole vault (5.02m/16′ 5.5 ), his fifth All-Region honor across indoor and outdoor track and field seasons dating back to his 2021 freshman season. His 5.02m mark led the West Region and ranked seventh in all of NCAA Division-III. Acero achieved the school record mark at the Bobcat Invitational in March.

Parker Cabra earns All-Region honors as a freshman in the high jump with a mark of 2.02m (6′ 7.5 ) which ranked fifth in the West region.

Dalon Harris was recognized for his performance in the shot put (16.42m/53′ 10.5 ) and the discus throw (46.46m/152′ 5 ).

Harris would rank second in the region in the shot put and fifth in the region in the discus throw.

The back-to-back SCAC Champion and NCAA Championship qualifying Texas Lutheran 4x100m relay team comprised of: Rickey Franks, Justin Freeney, Bryce PowellChimene, and Weston Guzman earns AllRegion honors after winning the 4x100m relay at the 2024 SCAC Championships, repeating as the 4x100m relay champions with a SCAC record breaking time of 40.81 seconds before improving on the time two weeks later at the

Trinity Last Chance Meet with a season-best time of 40.80 seconds.

The seven add to the list of All-Region honors for TLU Men’s Track and Field in 2024 as Acero, Chase Cook, Riley Denman, and Harris all earned All-Region honors during the indoor season.

Norman VITAL STATISTICS

Lee Alan Norman, age 71 of Seguin, passed away on May 15, 2024. Lee was born on December 19, 1952 in Elk City, Oklahoma to Edna Ray (Howard) and Charles T. Norman.

Lee proudly served his country during the Vietnam War in the United States Navy where he was stationed on the USS Sierra. He will be remembered as a longtime employee of Guadalupe County where he worked in several different capacities including truck driver and detention officer.

Lee is preceded in death by his son Luke Aaron Norman, his parents, his mother-inlaw and father-in-law, Thelma and C W Tipton, brother, Charles E. “Charly” Norman sister, Alexa Ray Norman, and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Melva Tipton Norman; son, Clae Norman; daughter, Cayla Norman and partner, Patrick Cates; grandchildren, Christopher Norman, Khamani Norman, Cyndle Norman, Trance Norman, Kash Norman and Justin Cates; sisters, Theleda Fuller and Robin Anderson and husband Curtis Dean; nephew, Larry Norman and wife Michelle and their children, Hannah, Ian and Bella; sisters-in-law, Wilma Adams and Rose Kroboth and husband Danny; brother-in-law, Cleve Tipton; other loving family members and a host of friends.

A memorial service celebrating Lee’s life will be held on Sunday, May 26, 2024 at 3 p.m. at Cross Church with the Reverend Jim Price officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Biden Admin Moving Forward With Marijuana Reclassification

(Washington, DC) -- The Biden administration is moving forward with a proposal to reclassify marijuana from a schedule one to a schedule three drug. The Department of Justice has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking to reclassify marijuana to a less restrictive category. The change reflects a major shift in cannabis policy across the country, as dozens of states over the last decade have legalized recreational marijuana. The rule change is subject to a 60-day public comment period. In a video posted on X, President Biden called the proposal an “important move toward reversing longstanding inequities.”

U.S. Suspends Funding For Virus Research Group At Center Of COVID-19 Origin Controversy

(Washington, DC) -- The United States is suspending funding for a virus research group at the center of a controversy about the origins of COVID-19. The Department of Health and Human Services also proposed to block EcoHealth Alliance from receiving federal funds in the future. A government grant to the organization before Covid emerged funded studies about bat coronavirus at the lab in Wuhan, China. The HHS said in a memo that EcoHealth did not “adequately monitor” virus growth in experiments at the Wuhan Institute of Virology or notify the National Institutes of Health that the viruses appeared to grow out of control.

CDC Unveils Bird Flu Tracker

(Atlanta, GA) -- The Centers for Disease Control has a new dashboard to track the spread of bird flu. The online tool provides a variety of data to see where the disease has been detected. While it has so far had an impact on dairy cows, the virus can jump between species.

Teen Who Died After Taking “One Chip Challenge” Had Enlarged Heart

(Boston, MA) -- Officials in Massachusetts say a teenager who died after eating an extremely spicy tortilla chip had an enlarged heart. The Massachusetts chief medical examiner’s office said this week that the 14-year-old was taking the “One Chip Challenge” last September when he ate a tortilla chip seasoned with a pepper called the Carolina Reaper, and died of a heart attack soon after. The Carolina Reaper Pepper reportedly ranks just under pepper spray on the Scoville scale that measures the pungency of chilis and peppers. The extremely spicy chip was pulled from stores following the teen’s death.
