Teatro's annual summer Residents encouraged camp to be available online to fill out census surveys Summer arts plus agriculture camp to be hosted CENSUS, continued from page 1

(Seguin) -- Enjoying summer camp will be a simple mouse click away for kids in Seguin. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin has converted this year's summer tradition into an online, virtual platform. Camp Director Beto Rincon, says limited registration is still being accepted for its free Summer Agroecology and Arts online camp. Rincon says because camps and programs for children are needed more than ever, the group wanted to ensure a series of learning opportunities via Zoom for kids ages 6-16.
"What we have planned is the camp will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. everyday June 8 through 12 and what the folks can expect is that each of those classes whether it be agriculture and culinary arts, creative writing or visual art, they will all be for one hour and this is new to us so what we are going to try this year is the instructor will be giving a lesson and the students will be watching but they will be receiving a lesson that they will be getting instruction on how to practice that lesson at home as well," said Rincon.
The camp will be offered June 8-12. The camp theme this year is Celebrating the Natural World/ Celebrando La Naturaleza. The camp sessions include Agriculture and the Culinary Arts from 9 to 10 a.m.; Creative Writing from 10 Normally held at Teatro's Cultural a.m. to 11 a.m. and Visual Art from 11 Arts Center and the adjacent LULAC a.m. to noon. Community Garden, Rincon says this online camp fulfills Teatro's mission Rincon says the classes are a blend of to promote a better understanding of agricultural, artistic and cultural the Mexican-American culture by the lessons that they may not be able to get teaching, study, practice, and anywhere else. The camp is limited to performance of the arts. He says the a total of 45 students and spots are camp offers learning opportunities on available on a first come first serve the topics of (culinary arts/ basis. Kutscher says filling out the census survey is vital to a county's future and the cities and areas inside of it. "The census is extremely important especially this year. It really is the foundation for planning for all entities when you talk about cities, the county, school districts, the state and federal government. It really helps out with federal and state allocation for funding, transportation and planning as well as
funding through the Metropolitan Planning Organization or Alamo Area MPO as well as business, economic development, first responder resources. It really is the road map for how all of us here at the county plan for and how we are going to do budgets and allocate funds and taxpayer money for resources and provide services to the public. It really is the basis for how so many decisions are made so we can't urge folks in Guadalupe County enough to please fill out the census paperwork and get that information submitted," said Kutscher. The city of Seguin has also been working hard encouraging residents to fill out the information. Jennifer Sourdellia, the city's public information officer, says the process is simple and is easy to complete. "You can do it online. You can do it over the phone. The website is and go and do your survey online. It's really fast. It only takes a few minutes and it's going to ask you some questions about people in your household, how many and we just really encourage people to please take the time to do that. It is your civic duty to that as a citizen for our community, for the betterment of our community," said Sourdellia. Officials say US Census representatives will be wearing vests, masks and will be carrying the proper identification. Again, field reps will only be knocking on the doors of those residents who have not yet returned their census survey.

SUMMER CAMP, continued from page 2 "They will come to Teatro (and) pick up those materials on June 1 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and those materials will be everything they need for the week of June 8. So on June 1, they are going to be receiving the materials so that they are ready to go and join us on June 8 through the 12 and that way, it's not just that the instructors are going to be talking at the students. This is our best way so far that we thought of to make sure that we're still giving the kids an opportunity to practice what we are teaching to provide a hands-on experience despite not being able to be right there in the same room as the instructor," said Rincon. Rincon says the camp has called upon a handful of highly trained and experienced instructors to share their knowledge with local children. Rincon says he too will also be leading the kids through various demonstrations. "As for as the agriculture and culinary arts classes go, I will be doing some of the classes from the garden itself with our podcaster. I'll be able to do that class from the garden and that way the students and their families can at least see what is out in the garden, what it looks like, how it is going out there and things like that. Hopefully, we get a bunch of repeat students
so that they will already be familiar with the garden and they will already kind of know what's out there but for those students who will be new to us this year, they'll at least be able to see okay, a community garden is this. It's here in Seguin. I am able to go with my family. I am able to pick the food. These are the people involved. I will be doing live cooking demonstrations on camera as well," said Rincon.

UIL releases guidelines, requirements for summer workouts 8, but with an extensive list of guidelines and requirements. The guidelines that apply to all workouts, as published on the UIL's website, are as follows.
(Austin) - After several weeks of using video technology and other digital means to communicate with coaches and maintain some sort of workout regimen, the athletes at Seguin, Navarro, and Marion High Schools will soon return to weight rooms, gyms, and practice fields to train with their teammates. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) is allowing its member schools to begin on-campus strength and condidtion workouts and sport specific instruction for student-athletes in grades 7-12 on June
Attendance at workouts must be optional for students and in compliance with the rules for Summer Strength/Conditioning Programs & Sport Specific Skill Instruction noted below. In addition to on-campus workout options, schools should consider providing students guidance for working out at home or remotely away from school. This can include virtual workouts, emailed or otherwise electronically delivered workout instructions, or any delivery model approved by the local school district.

Students should report to workouts in proper gear and immediately return home to shower at end of the workout. During workouts, schools must have at least one staff member per twenty students in attendance to ensure appropriate social distancing, hygiene, and safety measures are implemented. Schools must have hand sanitizer or hand-washing stations readily available in the workout area. Students and staff should be encouraged to use it frequently. All surfaces in workout areas must be thoroughly disinfected throughout and at the end of each day. No clothing or towels may be laundered on site or shared during workouts. There can be no shared water or food.
Attendance records shall be kept, however, students shall not be required or allowed to make up missed days or workouts.
Before the start of summer workouts, and at the start of every week of summer workouts, schools should consider prescreening all students for COVID symptoms that they or others living in their house may experience. This can be completed by phone prior to the first day of workouts, in person or in writing. Students and staff must self-screen every day for COVID-19 symptoms for themselves and family members. Schools should consider taking the temperature of each student each day at the start of the conditioning sessions, if possible.

Scholarship Program
The rising stars of Seguin High School Matador Theatre’s one act play troupe weren’t given the chance to see just how far their winning streak would take them with their 2020 competition piece,
“Over the River & Through the Woods” They were among three advancing troupes of the eight that performed at the UIL Zone Competition in Boerne. They were set to advance to Bi-District which was to be held at Seguin High School at the end of March. However, despite a disappointing end to the school year, Matador Theatre seniors Jazmin Blair, Hannah Harris, Kelsey Luensman, Andrew “Andy” McDowall, Emily Pearson, Megan Schievelbein, and Faith Sehon received the support and encouragement of their booster club with the delivery of “thespian cheer bags”. Seguin High School Drama Mamas & Papas booster president, Kelly Follis, shared some thoughts about the students graduating this year, “They have continued to amaze their “drama mamas” even during these challenging times. We are so proud of them. Several of our seniors have been among our “rocks” for several years. We could not let them graduate without hearing from us, so the goodie bags were a
way we could reach out. Our boosters also met via Zoom to award our annual senior scholarships. We appreciate more than we can say the generous, enthusiastic support we get year in and year out from our community. By public participation in our season ticket sales, concessions, and other fundraisers, Seguin has allowed us to do so many special things for our program and our kids.”
Emily Pearson
Faith Sehon
Follis continued, “Theatre is a year-round “sport”. It takes a lot to put on a full production. Our scholarship recipients, Emily Pearson ($600), Faith Sehon ($500), and Andrew McDowall ($400) invested a huge amount of effort in multiple aspects of the program. Under the direction of Lydia Robles and Tim Luna, these kids normally put on three big shows a year, along with a “Night on Broadway” production, competition pieces at the annual Thespian Convention, and senor-directed shows. For many of them, theatre isn’t all they do, but they put their hearts into everything they do and that’s what makes it such a joy to be a part of. I think senior Andy McDowall summed it up well, “It (theatre) was a lifeline to the world of romance and whimsy and magic. It gave me a greater appreciation of the world around me. It painted the world in pastels-- and isn’t that what we need?”
Andrew McDowall
We’ll miss you, seniors, and wish all our students the best always now and when we see them again.”
Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church Seguin Somewhere beyond the colorful rainbow signs planted along the walkway leading into the care facility are the helpers, the heroes. While the general population gradually moves on to the “new normal” and longawaited freedoms, older citizens confined to nursing centers, rehab and assisted living facilities must continue their confinement, and it is the Helper Heroes who are there for them. A Tuesday morning study group of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church members was inspired to recognize Seguin’s faithful frontline health workers through the “Global Citizen: Together at Home” program organized to support medical workers around the world. Group member Jim Dyess said his church join, and so starting with financial pledges of Spirit of Joy. WHO Emergency Leader: Second Peak Of First COVID Wave Could Arise (Geneva) -- The World Health Organization's emergencies chief Doctor Michael Ryan is warning the first wave of coronavirus could include a second peak. Speaking at a briefing, Ryan urged countries that may have overcome the virus or are easing restrictions to remain on high alert. He added the respiratory disease can "jump up" at any time. Ryan compared the current pandemic to the Spanish flu outbreak, which got a second peak, not a second wave. To continue flattening the virus curve, he said public health, social distancing and testing measures must remain in place for the foreseeable future.
Trump Touts White House's Coronavirus Response (Washington, DC) -- President Trump is again touting his administration's response to the coronavirus. On Twitter, the top executive said they've received good reviews and "helped a lot of great people!" He argued the White House made governors look good and didn't receive credit for what they've accomplished. Trump has been persistent in defending his handling of the respiratory illness while also being the target of criticism. The U.S. has the most coronavirus cases in the world.

World Health Organization Suspends Hydroxychloroquine Trial Because Of Health Risks
(Washington, DC) -- The travel suspension for Brazil is starting sooner than expected. The White House amended the effective date to begin Tuesday night, up two days from the original date. President Trump announced Sunday he was placing travel restrictions on non-U.S. residents if they've been to Brazil within two weeks of their travel to the U.S. The coronavirus has spiked in the South American country as of late. Only the states had more cases of the virus than Brazil as of Monday.
(Geneva, Switzerland) -- A clinical trial involving hydroxychloroquine [[ HIGH-droxee-klor-eh-quin ]], an anti-malaria drug, is being suspended by the World Health Organization. In making the announcement, the W-H-O referred to a report in The Lancet, a leading British medical journal. It said the "treatment" for COVID-19 promoted by some, including President Trump, can cause life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia. Trump announced last week that he was taking hydroxychloroquine to prevent COVID19 but said over the weekend that he's finished the medicine.
