Schoolcraft unseats Kuempel in state race

Incumbent unable to secure GOP nomination

(Seguin) --Longtime State Representative John Kuempel will not be returning to Austin next year. Kuempel, who has served the District 44 Texas House since 2010, lost his bid for the Republican nomination during Tuesday’s Republican Primary Runoff Election. Newcomer Alan Schoolcraft managed to defeat Kuempel after garnering the most votes in the district that includes both Guadalupe and Gonzales Counties.

Schoolcraft, received 8,898 of the votes cast while Kuempel trailed behind with 7,129 votes.

Schoolcraft declared victory even before the final box of votes was in -- unseating Kuempel near the end of his 7th term.

Schoolcraft says he is amazed by the overwhelming support that he has been shown and is looking forward to finishing the final leg of this race come November.

“My first thought is to thank John Kuempel, and the entire Kuempel family for the 40 years of service to the community, which is a tremendous service that I respect. Now, moving on, I’m just thankful for the opportunity the voters are giving me and I

look forward to winning in November and then going to Austin to represent Guadalupe and Gonzales Counties,” said Schoolcraft.

Schoolcraft, who previously served in the legislature in the late 80s and early 90s, earned the early endorsements of President Trump, Senator Cruz and Governor Abbott due to what he says are his conservative credentials and staunch support for school choice.

“I am grateful to the voters of HD44 and for the support I’ve received from countless conservative champions and state leaders including President Donald Trump, Governor Greg Abbott, and Senator Ted Cruz.

Imagine the Possibilities Tour set for Thursday

(Seguin) -- As part of Seguin's celebration of the National Preservation Month, the Seguin Main Street Program will be hosting an Imagine the Possibilities Tour on May 30 at 9 a.m.

The tour, hosted in partnership with the Texas Historical Commission's Texas Main Street Program, will feature property tours of vacant downtown properties and an upstairs loft currently being rehabilitated. The goal of the tour is to help investors, real estate professionals, prospective businesses, and the general public to see available properties and start to dream about the possible businesses that could locate inside these vacant spaces.

“This statewide event began in 2017 with the launch of DowntownTX.org to promote the site and connect available historic properties with interested new stewards. The concentrated statewide effort creates synergy and excitement for Texas' historic downtowns, allows participants special access to spaces, and provides insider information from experienced downtown professionals,” reads the Texas Historical Commission's web site, “Every tour is different, as cities put their own spin on their events; some choose to focus on lease spaces to attract new businesses, while others may showcase long-vacant buildings ripe for redevelopment using the preservation tax credit programs.”

The tour will start at 9 a.m. at the Seguin Visitor Center at 200 South Austin Street. The attendees will walk together to visit the properties on the tour where you will be able to look around the sites, take photos, and learn more about the properties. Information on available incentives and downtown development rules will also be provided. The tour should end close to noon.

While the tour is intended for those in the real estate profession, all are welcome to attend. We do ask that you RSVP at <https://forms.office.com/r/5gf9tgvyj8>

Road closures continue this week in Seguin

TxDOT advises safety around construction crews

(Seguin) -- TxDOT is reminding you about some changes this week along I-10.

TxDOT officials say through this Friday, the 1-10 westbound shoulder will be closed during the day between State Highway 46 and FM 464.

The road will be closed so contractors can perform work.

Meanwhile as construction continues to grow around Seguin and Guadalupe County, the Texas Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to be extra careful especially around these work zones.

TxDOT officials say Texas has more than 1,900 active work zones

across the state. In 2023, there were more than 26,000 traffic crashes in these work zones, a 3 percent increase over the previous year.

Of the 190 people killed in these crashes, 77 percent were drivers or their passengers.

In the Austin area last year alone, there were 1,739 traffic crashes in work zones, resulting in 23 fatalities and 67 serious injuries.

With all of this in mind,

TxDOT has again launching its statewide "Be Safe. Drive Smart" work zone safety campaign.

TxDOT is urging drivers to slow down, stay alert and heed signage in construction and maintenance areas.

Navarro ISD names new assistant superintendent

(Geronimo) – The Navarro ISD welcomes another top leadership position to its administrative team. The school district is introducing Dr. David Kauffman, the assistant superintendent of human resources and school leadership for Navarro ISD.

With 11 years of successful campus experience as a principal, school district officials say Dr. Kauffman has a proven track record of raising student achievement, improving campus TEA accountability ratings, and fostering innovation. Plus, they say he has also supervised campus principals, managed targeted improvement plans, and led a district Multilingual Education Team in Austin ISD, significantly enhancing outcomes for over 20,000 emergent bilingual students.

Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley says to accommodate the district’s overall needs, the district has redefined and merged responsibilities into this new position.

"We have taken the current director of human resources position and added some additional duties related to school leadership and supporting our principals as we grow. He is coming to us with a vast expeirence as a principal himself. He studied recruitment and retention procedures, polices and straetgies and we think for a growing district such Navarro, he is going to bring

some wonderful skills and expertise so I look forward to partnering with him and continuing to see our leaders grow at hte campus level and continuing to recruit the highest quality educators and staff to the Navarro family," said Epley.

Dr. Kauffman’s expertise extends to preparing future principals through his work with UT-Austin’s Texas Principal Leadership Academy and conducting research on teacher recruitment and retention at Harvard University. He is also fluent in Spanish and German and has developed language acquisition programs in various districts.

Known for his strong relationships and effective communication with stakeholders, district officials add that Dr. Kauffman also brings valuable experience in employee relations. They say his deep understanding of policy, governance, and

Schoolcraft, continued.

There is nothing more important tonight than the future of conservative values for our district and for Texas. I am looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work for the people of this district on closing the border, empowering parents, and protecting family values,” said Schoolcraft.

Although the results are clearly not what he had hoped for, Kuempel extends congratulations to Schoolcraft and says he remains appreciative for the years that he has been able to serve his constituents.

“From the bottom of our hearts, Michelle and I are so grateful for the privilege of representing Gonzales, Guadalupe and Wilson counties over the last fourteen years and beyond that for serving our neighbors for the last forty one years as a Kuempel family. We congratulate Mr. Schoolcraft on his victory and wish him the best,” said Kuempel.

Schoolcraft now goes on to face Eric Norman, who ran unopposed in the Democrat primary. The two will go head to head in the November 5 General Election.

Ott, continued.

and I’m so happy to be here, just very grateful for everybody that helped me along the way. I certainly could not have done it without my friends, my family. I’m grateful to God, of course," said Ott.

Ott says her work is only half way done as she looks forward to securing the seat this November.

"We're going to work hard. I want to win. I want this position. We need to make sure we keep Guadalupe County red and I intend to work very hard at that," added Ott.

As of late Tuesday, Engelke was unavailable for comment.

Ott's campaign now shifts to Democratic challenger Nahomie Alanis. Also appearing on the November 5 ballot will be Libertarian candidate Nolan Schmidt.

WHO Chief Confident Pandemic Treaty Deal Can Be Reached

(Geneva) -- The head of the World Health Organization says he’s confident a deal can be reached on a so-called pandemic “treaty.” WHO member states have been negotiating for more than two years to create new rules for responding to pandemics. Last week they failed to come to an agreement on a draft deal. In his opening address at the World Health Assembly Monday, the director-general of WHO said, “I know that there remains among you a common will to get this done.” A possible pandemic treatment has seen some resistance, with a truck being seen near the U.N. headquarters in Geneva with a sign that said, “No to the Pandemic Treaty. Stop the UN Power Grab.”

Researchers Find Bird Flu Risk In Raw Milk

(Madison, WI) -- Researchers at the University of Wisconsin say there’s a possible bird flu risk in drinking raw milk. Scientists at UW-Madison say people who drink raw milk from cows that have bird flu are at risk because the pasteurization process that killed the virus does not happen with raw milk. Researchers have found that cows can catch the bird flu, but they say there’s no evidence that regular milk can pass the flu along. Their advice is to heat-up any raw milk in order to kill the bird flu.

L.A. County Warns Of Measles

Case

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Health officials in Los Angeles County are getting the word out about a case of measles in the hopes of keeping it from spreading. Health officials have confirmed that a person who was infected with the highly contagious disease traveled through Los Angeles International Airport on May 19th. The person arrived on a Lufthansa flight at the Tom Bradley International Terminal and was in LAX for five hours before leaving on a flight from Terminal Seven. Those who were seated near the passenger on the flights will be notified but health officials say anyone who might have been at the airport on that day and may be experiencing symptoms of measles should see a doctor immediately.

‘Hoverboard

Dentist’ To Remain Without Dental License

(Anchorage, AK) -- Alaska’s so-called “hoverboard dentist” will remain without a dental license. The Alaska Supreme Court issued a ruling Friday that upholds the Board of Dental Examiners’s decision to revoke the license of 35-year-old Seth Lookhart. Lookhart was convicted in 2020 on 46 counts for defrauding Medicaid and endangering his patients. Court documents say Lookhart needlessly sedated patients and then billed Medicaid for the anesthesia. A video also shows Lookhart riding a hoverboard while pulling a patient’s tooth. A judge sentenced Lookhart to 20 years in prison with eight years suspended.
