Guadalupe County to host BULK Clean-up Event

(Guadalupe County) – Guadalupe County will be giving all residents an opportunity to declutter and dispose of their unwanted junk during this weekends’ first ever Bulk Clean-Up event

County officials ask that folks start planning for the event scheduled between 7:30 and 11:30 a.m. this Saturday, June 8 at the Road and Bridge Department. County officials say the facility is centrally located in Seguin at 310 IH 10 West Frontage Road near the Guadalupe County Jail.

Carmen Davila, the public information officer for the county, says although the event is

free, Guadalupe County residents much show proof of residency such as a photo ID or utility bill.

Davila says she hopes residents will take advantage of cleaning up their yards and properties.

“This is the first attempt for the county to have a bulk cleanup event like this for the residents to be able to bring bulk items, trash, junk, debris, large items to be able to dispose of in order to keep the environment safe and clean,” said Davila. Although the county is ready to take these items off their hands, Davila says there is an “accepted items list” that has been provided by the waste company.

Chemistry Roadshow leads into Seguin today

GVEC hosting the summertime fun

(Seguin) - The Texas A&M Chemistry Roadshow is heading into Seguin today. GVEC, in partnership with the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department, is inviting families over this morning for some chemistry fun.

Kasie Tankersley, the GVEC community relations representative, says the Chemistry Road Show is a public service program offering two complementary and interlocking goals: to entertain and educate students using chemistry.

“This is, I think, our third or fourth summer to bring Dr. (Jim) Pennington with the Texas A&M Chemistry Roadshow to our service terriority. We’ve kind of jumped around each summer to different venues and this is our second summer in Seguin so we are excited to have this educational piece. We’ve partnered with the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department to bring the Chemistry Roadshow and also with Texas A&M. The Chemistry Roadshow is a

great way for students to learn about chemistry and how it works but it’s also done in a very fun way. And, it’s not just for kids though because every year that I’ve been, I always learn something new or different and so just a really neat overall presentation,” said Tankersley.

Tankersley says the opportunity to learn while having fun is open

to those kids in the third to 12th grades. However, she says to attend, kids must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

“I’ve had a lot of questions from parents like ‘can I drop off my kids?’ And, I’m like no, all kiddos must have a parent or guardian, adult with them for the duration of the presentation and the presentation is an hour and half so it starts at 10:30 and it will end around noon. We want you to stay and enjoy it too and so there are things where the kids are going to get excited and the parents need to be there to make sure that everybody stays in their seat and everybody can see the presentation,” said Tankersley.

The event will include several demonstrations that are designed to “excite audience members with sensory impact.” Chemists say they also hope to teach them “that chemicals and chemistry are not only vital to our lives, but also can be fascinating and fun.”

The Chemistry Roadshow is free and will get underway at 10:30 a.m. today at the Seguin Coliseum.

Generosity overflows: Water to Thrive event a success

(Seguin) -- There will be a new water well in rural Africa, thanks to the generosity of those who attended and contributed to April's Water to Thrive benefit, hosted by TLU's Water to Thrive Student Club, TLU Center for Servant Leadership, and Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church.

Water to Thrive is a nonprofit that teams up with organizations

like TLU to fund and dig wells for rural communities in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Tanzania, where millions are affected by droughts, waterborne diseases, or pollution, and women and children must walk hours every day to find drinkable water for their families and livestock.

For the past 14 years, the TLU Water

to Thrive Student Club has been helping to raise funds to support this work, and in that time, has funded nine water wells, each of which serves about five hundred people. And now, there will be a tenth well.

“It is amazing!” says Ann Flemings, Director of Advancement at Water to Thrive.

Clean-up, continued.

“What we are accepting are trash, paper, plastics, junk debris such as large furniture, sofas, tables, household appliances, mattresses, scrap metal, scrap tires but they have to be less than 19.5 inches without rims and those are limited to four per vehicle, dry paint and bag yard waste. So, if people have collected their clippings and so forth and placed them in a bag, those are accepted,” said Davila.

Now is also a good time for those preparing to get rid of paint. Davila says the county is sharing a tip to make sure those gallons are ready for proper disposal come Saturday.

“We do have a lot of people calling about paint and so what the environmental folks have told us is that if you put sand in those, it will help dry them up quicker. So, if you are taking care of that today, those should be ready to be dry hopefully by Saturday to be able to dispose of,” said Davila.

Not all items, however, will be collected on Saturday. Davila says she encourages folks to double check the list of items that won’t be collected. She says the last thing they want is

for folks to be turned away.

“The contractor that we work with is the one that is setting the certain items that are deemed unacceptable. So things like that are hazardous waste materials such as gasoline, oil, liquid paints and acid bases, Antifreeze, batteries, LED, lithium, large brush and limbs are not accepted, fencing, sheds, construction material, dead livestock animals and pets, junk vehicles, boats

and no dump trailers and no gas and mowers or equipment,” said Davila.

Davila says it’s also important to note that the size of the trailer that can be used is also limited.

“We are having a maximum trailer length for people to utilize -- to bring their things over at 12 ft. trailers so anything longer than a 12 ft. trailer will not be accepted,” said Davila.

Before heading out this Saturday, Davila says folks will especially want to follow the signs for proper entry into the site.

All vehicles will be required to enter onto North Guadalupe Street from North Austin Street which is 0.5 miles north of IH-10. Vehicles will then be guided to the Road & Bridge Central Yard for proper disposal and then directed to exit onto the IH-10 Frontage Road. Officials say there will be no entry access from the frontage road, and all vehicles must enter the yard from Austin Street just past the Guadalupe Appraisal District Office.

A list of items that will “be accepted” and “not accepted” is currently available on the county’s website, https://www. co.guadalupe.tx.us/main/cleanup/ BulkCleanUpflyer.pdf

Water, continued.

“So wonderful what we can accomplish together as a community.” She also shares the happy news that this year's benefit raised enough money not only to fully fund well number 10, but also to start TLU well number 11.

“On behalf of the Water to Thrive Student Club, thank you so much to everyone who helped make our event a success,” says Sophie Salgado, club president. “We

are so grateful and excited to have funded our tenth well! Thank you especially to Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church for providing us a welcoming place to host the event, the general Seguin community, and the hardworking TLU students who helped support our efforts. We know our funds will be directly used to fund the well and provide clean, fresh water to a community in need in rural Africa. It feels amazing to make a positive difference in the world, and we look forward to our future endeavors!”
