Navarro ISD Trustee announces resignation from school board

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro ISD Board of Trustees will operate with one less school board member.  On Tuesday, the school district announced the resignation of longtime trustee and board vice president Hank Dietert. Dietert’s resignation is effective immediately.

Dietert has served the Navarro ISD since his appointment in April 2013. He was subsequently elected in November 2014, and re-elected in 2018 and 2022. His current term was set to run until November 2026.

In his statement, Dietert shared what district officials say was a “heartfelt resignation of his board seat.” He states, “I have truly felt the love, commitment, and support of this community for our students

of the district over the last 11 years while serving in this honorable position as a trustee and I will cherish every moment. I want to thank the community and school district from the bottom of my heart for giving me this opportunity to serve.”

He adds, “I have chosen to resign from the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees for reasons that pertain to my family and other endeavors that will take me away from my commitment Resignation, pg. 3

Seguin invited to take a dip in the Seguin Wave Pool

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Wave Pool season is officially back in action. Turning up the waves at Max Starcke Park is Nikki Berry, the athletics/ aquatics superintendent for the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department. Since opening at the end of May, Berry says they have had several visitors already.

“We are open Wednesday through Sunday. We open at noon. We close to the public at 6 p.m. We are open through the end of July and then we are open a couple of weekends in August. Feel free to come on in and bring your own snacks and drinks and chairs. We also require coastguard approved life jackets for those kids who need (them) but we do have some available for use and once you are there, you are there and if you need to step out, go get a snack or anything, you can just check out at the counter and your day of admission is for all day. It’s a great deal,” said Berry.

The cost to visit the pool still remains the same this summer season. General admission is $5 for ages 4 to 11; $6 for ages 12 to 59; $5 for age 60 and over. There is also no cost for kids 3 and under.

Berry says the parks office has also sweetened up the deal for this season’s summer passes to the Wave Pool.

“This year, we did something different with the season pass. They are offering perks for those season pass holders. A family pass is $125. This includes up to six family members but just keep in mind, you don’t have to put those family members that are under the age of 3. Those family members are free all the time. An individual (season) pass is $50 so the season pass perks for both of those, we are offering two free guest passes and then four concession coupons. So, that is an $8 value in concession coupons and up to a $12 value of free guest passes. They can use those immediately,” said Berry.

Tickets are also 50 percent off for groups of 10 or more or for those who enter after 4 p.m.

Berry says a few days also remain for those looking to host a private party at the Seguin Wave Pool. Berry says those who are interested are encouraged to call the parks office or book online as soon as possible.

“If you are looking for a spot for a birthday party or corporate event, we

do have a few openings available later in July for a private party and a private party entails three hour rentals 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. It’s $525 and that means the pools is all yours for your event -- your bridal shower, your baby shower, your corporate event,” said Berry.

Also, to help ensure the safety of all children, Berry reminds families that kids under the age of 14 will not be admitted with an adult.

“Those age 14 and older do not need to be admitted with an adult but those under the age of 14 need to have an adult chaperone -- someone there with them that is over the age of 18 that is there being responsible with them. We do encourage those under the age of 10 that a parent or guardian is within arm’s reach of them,” said Berry.

In addition to foods at the concession stand, families will also be able to get all this year’s wave pool merchandise including those swim diapers for those who leave home without one.

Special events or other offerings at the Wave Pool can be found daily on the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department Facebook page.

Drivers urged to use caution at county intersection

(Guadalupe County) -- A multi-car accident on Friday yields yet another opportunity for a Guadalupe County Commissioner to urge drivers to use caution as they approach and move through the FM 1044 and FM 78 intersection east of Marion.

Keeping tabs on the number of vehicle accidents and overall congestion at this intersection has been Commissioner Pct. 4 Stephen Germann. Germann has been very vocal on the county's attempts to secure a traffic light at this intersection.

Germann says a collision occurred every two weeks until recently. Accidents involving trains have also been reported at that intersection.

Even though this latest accident did not cause serious injuries, Germann says it still was an accident.

"Recently, there is less accidents but we went for around three weeks and then had two accidents in one day. Now, we've gone around four or five weeks but the last accident we had was three cars with four people involved so the frequency of the accidents is less but we are still having accidents and the number of cars that are backing up is significantly more because I've been adding them. It will back up as many as 65 cars on 1044 on an afternoon. So, the chance of having an accident is still extremely substantial," said Germann.

The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court approved a resolution in February urging the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to seriously consider moving forward with its plan to install a traffic control signal at this intersection.

Resignation, continued.

and dedication to this wonderful school district. I leave the district knowing that it is in great hands with the board of trustees and superintendent currently serving the district. I love Navarro ISD and this community and I have always loved it since the time I was a student here. I plan to stay in this

Although the effort by TxDOT has been described as slow, Germann says he hears that there is a plan and that a signal could be installed sooner than later.

"A lot of people and they are very nice about it but they say 'please do something' and I think we have something in the works to get it done by the end of summer or early fall to get a traffic signal. I am getting that from our state senators office. I'm hoping that comes true and we can proceed in a safe way for our citizens," said Germann.

Despite the light at the end of the tunnel, Germann isn't relaxing his message on safety. In fact, with the summer season well underway, Germann is urging all drivers, especially teens and those unfamiliar with the area, to use extreme caution.

"When you go to that intersection, you must be extremely careful to go through that intersection. Watch all the drivers in that intersection because there are some that have waited a long time and the frustration level is very high and people don't necessarily drive the correct way through it. Just be extremely careful in that intersection until we get a traffic light there," said Germann.

Germann says it's been about two years since lives have been lost at this intersection and wants to ensure that safety is again regained at this location. He says residents in that area continue to be delayed in their travel due to the high volume of traffic heading north and south. In addition to a resolution, the county also forwarded a petition to state leaders that included 1,000 signatures from residents who want to expedite the project.

community for the rest of my life. I am and will forever be a NAVARRO PANTHER.

Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley has also expressed gratitude for Dietert’s longstanding service.

In a statement to the Seguin Daily News, Epley states, “I know our community will echo my deep gratitude for Hank’s selfless service

to the district and the students and families of Navarro ISD. He is a true panther as a Navarro alumni and in his commitments and legacy of living his life to serve others and support this community. We will be honoring his service at the July meeting.”

Per district policy, Dietert’s seat may be filled in the upcoming November election without the need for an interim appointment.

Senate To Vote Wednesday On Right To Contraception Bill

(Washington, DC) -- The Senate is expected to vote Wednesday on the Right To Contraception Act. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made the announcement in a “Dear Colleague” letter, the New York Democrat timing the vote just weeks before the second anniversary of the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Since then, at least 20 states have imposed strict or near-total abortion bans. The bill would guarantee a woman’s right to birth control and a a doctor’s right to provide contraception, referrals and services related to birth control. The bill is sponsored by three Democratic Senators: Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Tammy Duckworth of Illinois and Mazie Hirono of Hawaii.

LGBTQ+ People Face Higher Cancer Risks

(Boston, MA) -- LGBTQ+ people are more likely to face cancer risks. According to new data from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, they’re also more likely to face discrimination at the doctor’s office that could keep them from getting adequate screening and care. Numbers show that bisexual women over the age of 40 have much higher rates of smoking than heterosexual women. Gay youth also smoked cigarettes at a higher rate. Also, lesbian and bisexual women were less likely to exercise, had higher rates of obesity and a higher alcohol intake.

Study: Fathers Face More Heart Issues

(Undated) -- Fathers are more at risk for heart issues later in life than men without children, new research shows. Researchers found that later heart issues were particularly noticeable in men who became dads at age 25 or younger. The causes aren’t spelled out, but the researchers suggest the stress of parenthood could make it more difficult for men to maintain things like a healthy diet and exercise. The study is published in AJPM Focus.

New Study Shows Late Night Eating Boost Colorectal Cancer Risk

(Chicago, IL) -- A new study shows that late night eating boosts the risk of developing colorectal cancer. There’ve been lots of studies showing the risks and benefits of what you eat. But a new study out of Chicago’s Rush University Medical College is the first to look at and find a link between eating late and developing colorectal cancer. Researchers studied more than 600 people getting colonoscopies and found that nearly half of those admitting they were late night eaters were more likely to have adenomas, non-cancerous lesions that can become cancerous over time. Scientists think it has something to do with the disruption of the body’s circadian rhythms due to late night eating.
