Ray resigns in preparation for Sheriff’s office

(Seguin) -- The sheriff-in-waiting is resigning his post from the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Deputy Joshua Ray is leaving the sheriff’s office for now and will instead be joining another county office.

Ray was offered the opportunity to serve as Chief Deputy almost a year and a half ago by current Sheriff Arnold Zwicke. His announcement on Monday comes nearly three months after he won the Republican nomination for sheriff during the March 5th Primary. Since he faces no Democratic opponent in the November General Election, Ray is set to officially take office as Sheriff on Jan. 1, 2025.

Freedom Fiesta bigger, better this year

Seguin encouraged to mark their calendars

(Seguin) -- Seguin’s celebration of our nation’s independence gets started a little bit earlier this year. Freedom Fiesta will kick off this year’s observance of the week of the Fourth of July holiday. It will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 29 in Central Park.

Freedom Fiesta is a tradition that dates back to 1967, and has been a community favorite ever since. It was originally hosted by the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce, but it has been hosted by radio station AM 1580 KWED for more than a decade now.

KWED General Manager Darren Dunn says there will be more music, more food, and more family fun on display at this year’s event.

“Brandon Michael and his band will be our headliner this year. Brandon is a local guy, but he has a huge following, and we are excited to hear him perform for the Freedom Fiesta crowd this year. He is going to put on a fantastic show. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and dancing shoes, because it will be a great night,” said Dunn.

Splash pad closed for repairs

(Seguin) -- You might want to make other plans if the local Splash Pad was included on your list of places to go.

The city of Seguin this week has closed the Splash Pad at Park West.

Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer for the city of Seguin, says the splash pad is currently under repair.

"We are currently experiencing

at the splash pad some leaky gaskets and so those are being repaired and they won't be repaired until Friday morning. The gaskets need to be replaced and glued to hold the water pressure and they want to give the glue plenty of time to dry and so that's why they are closing till Friday," said Sourdellia.

Sourdellia says the plan is to reopen to families at 9 a.m. Friday.

In a written statement to the Seguin Daily News, Ray states, “In the interim, I have made the difficult decision to leave the Sheriff’s Office to take a position in the Guadalupe County Attorney’s Office. The interplay between law enforcement and prosecution is complex, and I am now well-suited to further these relationships and expand my professional knowledge while preparing for my role as Sheriff in January. Moving forward, I will be able to fairly evaluate the Sheriff’s Office and make the determination of what we will continue to do as well as what changes need to be made when I take office.”

He goes on to state, “In fairness to the current Sheriff and his existing staff I felt it was best to work outside the office as these assessments are made. During my campaign, I discussed my vision for a more modernized Sheriff’s Office to better serve this community. I plan on holding a series of town hall meetings in the near future to talk with the residents of Guadalupe County on how we can improve this office and better serve you with integrity and professionalism. I served with

"We do apologize to everybody. We know it is hot out there and you are looking for a place to cool off but you can always go over to the Seguin Wave Pool," said Sourdellia. Families are encouraged to check the Seguin Parks and Recreation Facebook page for updates on the splash pad including the hours of operation at the Seguin Wave Pool.

these values in the United States Marine Corps and as a Texas Ranger and I will never waiver from them, personally or professionally. I will continue my pledge to serve this community over the next six months and diligently work on my plans to lead the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office with character and integrity.” Ray was unavailable for further comment regarding this decision. However, he did say that he looks forward to announcing town hall meetings with his future constituents in the very near future.

Fiesta, but he says the food lineup will be bigger and better than ever.

Dunn says they are bringing several new features to this year’s event.

He says that includes some additional entertainment.

“Brandon Michael will be on the main stage, but we will also have a special section for folks who are looking for a slightly different sound. DJ D’Trayne will be playing some tunes on the other side of the downtown square. He’ll be set up near another new feature. We will have some large video screens set up and video games will be offered for those looking for more fun in the park. It will provide a different vibe for some of the younger or youngat-heart people who attend Freedom Fiesta this year,” said Dunn.

There will be even more family fun available during Freedom Fiesta. Dunn says a popular attraction is again making its return.

“We started offering a huge collection of bounce houses for kids a few years ago. It will again be back, and kids can bounce throughout the night. The bull riding machine is expected to return, along with face-painting and balloon making for kids,” said Dunn.

Dunn says the fun and excitement isn’t just for the kids. He says a record number of vendor booths will also be set up at Freedom Fiesta. He says no matter what you are looking for, you’re likely able to find it at this year’s event.

“The response from vendors has been tremendous. They keep calling and asking if they can be part of this important community event. There will definitely be something for everyone,” said Dunn.

Dunn says music and fun are big draws to Freedom

“It’s crazy. I mean crazy in a good way. I think we have, like 18 food trucks coming this year. Plus, we have several non-profit food vendors that will also be selling tasty treats for you. I strongly encourage everyone to come hungry, and then pace yourself throughout the night.

It’s going to be hard to sample everything, but we all should try,” said Dunn.

Freedom Fiesta is all about celebrating our nation’s independence, and Dunn says it will again start with the presentation of colors, the singing of the National Anthem and then the Kiddie Parade around Central park.

“The Guadalupe County Republican Women are again hosting our Kiddie Parade. This isn’t a time for division. This is a time to celebrate what makes America great. So, the Kiddie Parade is open to every child, and every family in this community. They need to dress in their patriotic gear and come be part of the celebration,” said Dunn.

If folks want to be a vendor or sponsor for Freedom Fiesta, Dunn says there’s still time to do so. He says all you have to do is call the radio station at 830-379-2234.

Freedom Fiesta runs from 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 29 in downtown Seguin, and it is the starting point for a multiple-day event honoring the week of Independence Day. In addition to Freedom Fiesta, the community will also host a Patriotic Concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 30 in Central Park; the city’s Fireworks Fiesta will be held at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3; and the Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4. A complete list of all of the events can be found at seguintoday.com or at visitseguin.com.

Seguin’s Ocean Moreno gets college football offer from former Matador coach

(Seguin) -- Seguin High School’s Ocean Moreno has received a college football offer from a former Matador coach.

On Monday, the wide receiver announced on social media he has received an offer to play football at UT-Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg. UTRGV is a start-up program helmed by former Seguin High School head coach Travis Bush. Bush served as the head coach at Seguin from 2016 through the 2020 season before moving on to New Braunfels Canyon High School. Following two seasons as the head coach of the Cougars, Bush was hired to helm the startup UTRGV Division-I program in December of 2022. The Vaqueros will start play in 2025.

Moreno was a member of the Academic All District 12-5A team in his junior season last fall. He caught 23

A speedy wide-out, Moreno also competed at the UIL Class 5A state track meet as a member of Seguin’s 4X100 and 4X200 meter relay teams this past spring. Moreno and the Matadors will start their 2024 season on August 30th when they host the Alamo Heights Mules at Matador Stadium. The Seguin Matador football program is led by head coach Craig Dailey. Ernesto Garcia is the program’s recruiting coordinator.

Ella Meier, age 91 of Seguin passed away to her heavenly home on June 9, 2024. Ella was born June 8, 1933 in Marion, Texas to Julius and Ida (Zimmermann) Bulgrin.

She was united in marriage to Edwin Meier Jr. in 1952. The young couple’s aspiration to purchase a farm was successful, but not without sacrifice and struggles.

During these times, money was limited, but a strong work ethic and integrity made this dream come true. Ella was a steadfast woman of perseverance.

This proud accomplishment lived on in Ella’s heart until the very end.

Ella retired from Hexcel Corporation after 35 years of service. Ella’s enjoyment of meeting new people and not wanting idle time, motivated her to seek other employment opportunities. During the years in various duties, whether paid or volunteered, she met so many new people and enjoyed reconnecting with friends of the past. Her cherished 1952 black Chevrolet truck also gained her much attention and admiration from

many. Most of all her baking skills were unsurpassed and shared with many. Her greatest hobby included gardening many vegetables in her beloved garden and giving out produce to family and friends. Even after many years have passed, the memory of those treats lingers with all her special recipients.

Ella is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Edwin Meier, Jr. and sister, Rosa Schwarzlose.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Gawlik and husband, Thomas; grandchildren, Jeremy Meier, Tyler Gawlik, Kailey Gawlik; great-grandchildren, Lukas, Jordyn, Alena, Alexa, Makenna, and Emery; several nieces; and many other friends and loving family members. Ella leaves behind her best companion Buddy who was always by her side to the end.

A heartful appreciation is extended to Susanna Alcala and her caregivers Veronica Alcala and Maria Ortega, for the supportive foundation given to honor Ella’s wish to remain in her home.

Private graveside services and interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Guadalupe County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1593, Seguin, Texas 78155.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155.
