Now Showing: Movies in the Park

(Seguin) -- It’s movie night in Seguin this Friday. The Seguin Parks and Recreation will host another free movie showing on its big screen tonight at a local park.

Jennifer Sourdellia, the city of Seguin’s public information officer, says that while the city can’t promote the movie name to local media outlets, it can guide them to where they can find tonight’s title.

“Due to some licensing regulations, unfortunatley we are not able to advertise on the local media what the name of the movie is that we will be showing but if you want to see what movie it is that we will be showing, definitely visit our website. We have more information about all the different movies that we show at our parks.

Seguin teen to compete in Houston for statewide crown

(Seguin) -- A local 16-year-old is looking to be crowned the next Miss Jr. Teen Texas.

Casey Hernandez, a Seguin High School student, is hoping to walk away with the crown as she competes as a state finalist in this weekend’s National American Miss Jr. Teen Pageant in Houston.          Hernandez is slated to compete in one of the divisions for girls ages four through 21.

This journey for Hernandez is special in that this will only be the second time the SHS junior has ever competed in a pageant.

Her Mom, Penny Bright, says her daughter surprised everyone in becoming a finalist during her first pageant ever this past April in San Antonio.

She says Casey took top honors in her division after beating out close to 100 contestants.

“She’s always been kind of a tom boy so she’s always done a lot of sports and things like that. As

a matter of fact at school, she’s in ROTC. And, probably in the last couple of years, she has kind of turned into more of a girly girl and she had actually asked me about a year ago if she could compete in a contest and I didn’t even know where to start. So I didn’t start but apparently, she must have told someone and they signed her up so we did get the invitation and I asked her ‘are you sure you want to do this? ‘And, she said ‘yes.’ She

wanted to try it. She went in very confident. She did well. I think she does well with her speaking and engaging with other people so she did really well when they interviewed her the first time and when we went back the second time, they chose her to compete in the state finals,” said Bright.

Bright says she believes it’s the interview portion of the contest that sets this particular pageant aside from others.

“The one thing I do like about the National American Miss Pageant is they focus on interviews. I think young kids, she’s 16, so I think young kids and adults have a hard time with the interview process and kind of that communication skill so they really focus on that. There is one beauty contest where they wear one gown but the rest of the contest is based on interviews that they have to go to with different people and how well

RIO to take the stage this Sunday in Central Park

(Seguin) -- The fun continues in Central Park with our third Summer Concert Series with RIO. Their performance will be on Sunday, June 16 from 7:00 to 8:30 in Central Park. The band includes Frutoso “Fruit” Balderas, Lloyd Waxler, and Steve Richardson.

This popular local dance band plays all types of music to get you up and moving with the beat.

“We’re all locals; lived here all our lives.  We love Seguin and look forward to playing for you.”  said Susan Balderas, Fruit’s wife.

Rio started back in 1984.  They’ve seen many changes and different music styles over the years.  “I’ve been playing professionally since I was 15.  I’m very fortunate to have Steve and Lloyd playing with me.  They are great guys, and they make playing fun.  Steve actually played with my band, Patchwork, in the 70s while attending college.  He came back to play with me after he retired. We are available for your next function.” Said Fruit. Call or text at 512-965-6602 or email FruitSusan@yahoo. com.  Follow them on Facebook at Rio Seguin, TX.

The concert series continues on June 23 with Gacho Sol and our final concert, the San Antonio Symphonic Band, on June 30.

Sourdellia says this year’s Movies in the Park series has been traveling to the different parks throughout the city. She says tonight’s movie moves up north.

“This is a free movie in the park. This time, we are going to be showing a movie in the park at Manuel C. Castilla Park. It starts at 8:45 p.m. This is totally free. All you have to do is bring your blanket, lawn chairs, snacks. We will also have food trucks on site too in case you just want to buy something there. It’s a fun family activity for eveyrone to come out and enjoy and it’s this Friday,” said Sourdellia.

City officials thank HEB for its sponsorship of the 2024 Movies in the Park series. Manuel C. Castilla Park is located at 2261 N. Guadalupe St.

Wiggle Waggle, Any Which Way, Seguin Area Youth Leadership Academy and the Girl Scouts will sell food and drinks. The familyfriendly concerts will be on Sundays, starting at 7:00 p.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m. They are free and offer something for every musical taste.

they perform on those interviews and community service performed. So, they have to have interviews, community service and then there is the one component for the gown, the formal wear,” said Bright. Hernandez, who has also been active as a member of the JR ROTC, the Seguin Starling Dance Team, and the

Center, GVEC, The Koehler Company, Seguin Electric Company, Starcke Furniture, Tri-County A/C & Heating LLC, and the City of Seguin Main Street Program. Special thanks to these local businesses, industries, and individuals for their contributions. The concerts would not be possible without their assistance.

Student Advisory Team, says involving herself now with pageants is building on a whole new level of confidence.

“I guess starting high school, I kind of grew out of my shell because I went to St. James and there were more boys than girls. I think that is what made me a tom boy almost. I was always hanging out with them and then transitioning into a public school -- I’ve been at Seguin High School and meeting a lot of new people -- I wouldn’t say I got their personality but they honestly inspire me to dig deeper into myself and just almost release different parts of me that I haven’t shown the whole world yet,” said Hernandez.

As for this weekend, Hernandez says she is ready to go out and do her best.

“Going to Houston, I am really excited for the pageant. I have been talking about it this whole coming week to my friends and probably just meeting all the other girls from different cities -- just meeting all the new people is really the main thing that I’m excited for and of course, the sparkling dresses,” said Hernandez.

No matter the outcome of this weekend’s contest, Hernandez says she won’t be hanging up those shiny gowns anytime soon, and she plans to continue on with this new journey.

The winner of this weekend’s contest will go on to compete in the national pageant in Orlando, Florida this Fall.

Ella Meier, age 91 of Seguin passed away to her heavenly home on June 9, 2024. Ella was born June 8, 1933 in Marion, Texas to Julius and Ida (Zimmermann) Bulgrin.

She was united in marriage to Edwin Meier Jr. in 1952. The young couple’s aspiration to purchase a farm was successful, but not without sacrifice and struggles.

During these times, money was limited, but a strong work ethic and integrity made this dream come true. Ella was a steadfast woman of perseverance.

This proud accomplishment lived on in Ella’s heart until the very end.

Ella retired from Hexcel Corporation after 35 years of service. Ella’s enjoyment of meeting new people and not wanting idle time, motivated her to seek other employment opportunities. During the years in various duties, whether paid or volunteered, she met so many new people and enjoyed reconnecting with friends of the past. Her cherished 1952 black Chevrolet truck also gained her much attention and admiration from

many. Most of all her baking skills were unsurpassed and shared with many. Her greatest hobby included gardening many vegetables in her beloved garden and giving out produce to family and friends. Even after many years have passed, the memory of those treats lingers with all her special recipients.

Ella is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Edwin Meier, Jr. and sister, Rosa Schwarzlose.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Gawlik and husband, Thomas; grandchildren, Jeremy Meier, Tyler Gawlik, Kailey Gawlik; great-grandchildren, Lukas, Jordyn, Alena, Alexa, Makenna, and Emery; several nieces; and many other friends and loving family members. Ella leaves behind her best companion Buddy who was always by her side to the end.

A heartful appreciation is extended to Susanna Alcala and her caregivers Veronica Alcala and Maria Ortega, for the supportive foundation given to honor Ella’s wish to remain in her home.

Private graveside services and interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Guadalupe County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1593, Seguin, Texas 78155.

Riley Jean McDavitt, age 73 of McQueeney, passed away on June 2, 2024. Riley was born on December 14, 1950 in Ft. Riley, Kansas to Kathryn (Jordan) and Jerome A. McDavitt.

Born into a military family, Riley spent his early years in Kansas and France, but grew up primarily in the San Antonio area. He graduated from Churchill High School and would later serve multiple combat tours in Vietnam. Beyond lessons, Riley taught countless friends, family and complete strangers to ski just for the fun of it. He retired from Seguin ISD in 2018, but continued teaching others to ski as long as the lake would allow.

Riley was passionate about waterskiing, barefooting, and most of all Lake McQueeney. He enjoyed spending time on the lake with his loved ones, skiing with the Ski Bees, gardening, mowing the lawn and watching

Aggie sports. Riley had a tenacious spirit, taking on all obstacles with positivity, a laid-back attitude and a special kind of patience. He was an intensely loyal friend and an incredibly dedicated father.

Preceding him in death are his parents, his brother, Jordan McDavitt, his brother-in-law, Odes Ray Brown, and his cousin, Billy Kerwin.

Survivors include his son, John McDavitt and wife Rebecca; daughter, Felicia McDavitt Cordes and husband Luke; grandchildren, Marcus and Lily McDavitt and Lake Cordes; sisters, Linda McDavitt and Sandra “Sandy” McDavitt Brown; sister-in-law, Jan McDavitt; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.
