Habitat for Humanity invites community to first “Build for Better Bash”

(Seguin) -- A big community event is literally building a better life for families in the Seguin area. The San Antonio and Guadalupe Valley chapter of Habitat for Humanity is hosting its first ever “Build for Better Bash” on Saturday at Texas Lutheran University.

Madeline Zwicke, the executive director of Seguin’s Guadalupe Valley affliate, says this is going to be massive day for Habitat for Humanity. She says it’s a fundraising event, but more importantly she says it’s a way for the community to come together to help provide affordable and decent housing for hardworking local families. Zwicke says everyone is invited to come out and be part of this family fun event.

“We’re going to have a bounce house there, a DJ, and obviously we’re doing a (radio) remote with KWED. We’re going to have a dunk tank there. So, we want companies to come out and maybe vote for their manager to get thrown into the dunk tank. Lots of fun there, and we’re going to have food. Everybody that purchases a ticket will also get a t-shirt, that says Build for Better across the front to be able to represent Habitat in Seguin and in our community,” said Zwicke.

Zwicke says the fun is just part of the overall event. She says Habitat is all about building homes and better futures for families. She says there, of course will be an important building component to Saturday’s Build for Better Bash.

“We’re going to be building a set of wall panels for our next home buyer here in Seguin. So, we’ll have eight stations laid out in the TLU (Seguin Hall) parking lot. We’re going to be swinging a hammer and nails at each station. We’re going to have upwards of 200 volunteers out there. It’s a hands-on experience -- even for the little ones. Bring your kids out. We want youth of our community (to participate). I know youth are always looking for different volunteer opportunities and to get involved. I can’t think of a better way than to do it than with Habitat, and getting that hands-on experience,” said Zwicke.

Taylor Judkin, assistant vice-president for development and communications for the San Antonio and Guadalupe Valley Affliate, says no special skills are needed to participate on Saturday. She says that’s why they are extending an invitation to everyone in the community. Even if you’ve never swung a hammer before, you should come check out the Build for Better Bash.

“We’re going to have crews there managing every single station to be able to give you all the instruction, the tools, the safety, and everything that you need. So, no experience is necessary. This is a great opportunity to

learn a new skill. Maybe you want to remodel your home, or build a wall yourself at home -- I don’t know? But it’s also a great opportunity for the kids to be able to see the impact in our community and to work alongside our current homebuyers in our program and to see the new homeowner who’s going to receive these particular walls -- and it’s just really cool. So, you do not need any skills. We’ll teach you everything you need,” said Judkin.

There are multiple opportunities for people to get involved. Getting signed up is easy, and you can do it for yourself, for your family, or for a larger organization or business. Judkin says sponsorship opportunities are also still available.

“Our number one thing (right now) is to register. We’re offering our tickets now. Tickets cost for adults is $25 and for youth, 16 and under , is $15. This ticket includes your t-shirt and also a meal. Thankfully, we have the Knights of Columbus, who have generously (volunteered) to make hot dogs and hamburgers on that day. What better summer food could you have? So, we also offer family packs of tickets. Again, this is a family fun event, so we want everyone to come out. No one is excluded. You can get individuals, get your kids, get your family, or get churches (involved). You know, (churches can) bring their congregations out there. Also, police officers, firefighters, or anyone in the community (can get involved). We want to see (everyone) come together and build side by side with our homebuyers in our program,” said Judkin.

Habitat for Humanity volunteers have been promoting this event for weeks, and several folks have already signed up. But Zwicke says it is important to note, that there’s still time for you to get involved. She says if you want to bring a larger group, they will make sure that you get your times coordinated so that you can work together building those walls.

“We actually are going to have two shifts on the day of the bash. So, the first shift is going to be from 9 to 10:30 a.m., and then the second (shift) will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon. I would say that if you have a group that’s interested in coming out -- 10 or 10 and up -- that you just reach out by phone. Again, that number is 830-401-0422. The reason I say this is because we are able to offer group rates, which are not online. We have the family four pack online, but as far as group rates that are 10 or more people -- we would need to talk to them individually over the phone,” said Zwicke.

The wall panels being built on Saturday will go

into the next home built here in Seguin. Habitat for Humanity has increased the number of homes that it builds each year. Those homes are then sold to working families, via a low interest loan. Homeowners are required to work on the construction of their home. That sweat equity is an important part of Habitat’s mission of making sure that families understand the true value of homeownership.

The local affiliate has bigger plans for Seguin, including an effort to build more than a 100 homes in a Habitat planned subdivision near Highway 46 and Jefferson Avenue. But it will take lots of money to make that happen. That’s one of the reasons why fundraisers, like Build for Better Bash are so important to the community’s future.

Build for Better Bash runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Seguin Hall parking lot at Texas Lutheran University. Don’t forget KWED will be broacasting live from the event on Saturday morning. Spreen

William Fred “Willie” Spreen, age 88 of Seguin, passed away on June 8, 2024. Willie was born on May 25, 1936 in San Antonio, Texas to Lillie (Rau) and William Henry Spreen. He was honored and blessed to serve as a Lutheran Pastoral Assistant throughout many Lutheran Churches in South Central Texas.

His loving wife of 52 years, Esther R. Blumberg Spreen, his son, William A. “Bubba” Spreen and his parents preceded him in death.

Survivors include his sons, Todd Spreen and wife Lisa, and

Steven Spreen and wife Jennifer; daughter-in-law, Linda Spreen; grandchildren, William C. “Buddy” Spreen and wife Ashley, Allyson Spreen, Isaac Spreen and Sydney Spreen; great-grandchild, Ella Spreen; brother, Louis Spreen and wife Mary Ann; brotherin-law, Clinton Blumberg, Jr. and wife Cathy; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Willie’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek with the Reverend Judith Miller officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Private interment will follow at a later date in the Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek Cemetery.

McDavitt

Riley Jean McDavitt, age 73 of McQueeney, passed away on June 2, 2024. Riley was born on December 14, 1950 in Ft. Riley, Kansas to Kathryn (Jordan) and Jerome A. McDavitt.

Born into a military family, Riley spent his early years in Kansas and France, but grew up primarily in the San Antonio area. He graduated from Churchill High School and would later serve multiple combat tours in Vietnam. Riley earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Horticulture from Texas A&M University in 1978, before returning to active military duty. After completing his military service, Riley began to focus on what would become his life’s calling: teaching.

Riley was a public school science teacher for over 30 years and also served as Cheer Coach for Southside ISD, River City Mustangs, and Camp Manager for the National Cheerleading Association. More than anything, he absolutely loved teaching others how to waterski at Lake Breeze Ski Lodge as well as Riley’s H2O Ski School. Beyond lessons, Riley taught countless friends, family and complete strangers to ski just for the fun of it. He retired from Seguin ISD in 2018, but continued teaching others to ski as long as the lake would allow.

Riley was passionate about waterskiing, barefooting, and most of all Lake McQueeney. He enjoyed spending time on the lake with his loved ones, skiing with the Ski Bees, gardening, mowing the lawn and watching

Aggie sports. Riley had a tenacious spirit, taking on all obstacles with positivity, a laid-back attitude and a special kind of patience. He was an intensely loyal friend and an incredibly dedicated father.

Preceding him in death are his parents, his brother, Jordan McDavitt, his brother-in-law, Odes Ray Brown, and his cousin, Billy Kerwin.

Survivors include his son, John McDavitt and wife Rebecca; daughter, Felicia McDavitt Cordes and husband Luke; grandchildren, Marcus and Lily McDavitt and Lake Cordes; sisters, Linda McDavitt and Sandra “Sandy” McDavitt Brown; sister-in-law, Jan McDavitt; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

A celebration of life gathering will be held at Lake Breeze Ski Lodge in McQueeney on Sunday, June 30th from 2:00 - 5:00 PM with remarks and military honors to begin at 3 p.m.

Hazy Skies In U.S.

(UNDATED) -- Hazy skies have been blamed on Canadian wildfires over the past couple summers in parts of the U.S. But, today now hazy skies as far north as Nebraska and Iowa, east to Connecticut and Massachusetts are coming from Southern U.S. and Mexico wildfires. In Midwestern states, the smoke plume is high in the sky and causing hazy horizons. In southern states into New England the smoke is affecting air quality.

SCOTUS Rejects Mifepristone Challenge

(Washington, DC) -- President says he’s cautiously following the Supreme Court’s ruling preserving access to a widely used abortion pill. In a statement, Biden acknowledged the High Court’s ruling that allows mifepristone to be mailed to patients without an in-person doctor’s visit. The President went on to say that the fight for women’s reproductive freedom is not over, claiming Republicans are planning to ban abortions nationwide. The unanimous decision comes two years after the court overturned the landmark abortion rights decision Roe v. Wade.

Dems IVF Bill Fails

(Washington, DC) -- Senate Republicans are blocking a bill put forward by Democrats aimed at protecting access to in vitro fertilization. The vote was 48-47 on Thursday with just two Republicans voting in favor of the legislation. The bill was expected to fail but Democrats are carrying out an effort to put GOP lawmakers on the defensive over reproductive rights ahead of the November elections. Republicans criticized the measure, calling it an election year stunt.

CDC Warns About Salmonella Outbreak Linked To Bearded Dragons

(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is warning about a salmonella outbreak in at least nine states, including New York, that’s linked to pet bearded dragons. The CDC says at least 15 people, including four in New York, have contracted salmonella with symptoms including diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Four have been hospitalized. The eight other states involved are California, Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. The CDC is warning parents not to let their kids kiss or snuggle bearded dragons and says wash your hands thoroughly after handling the reptile or its habitat. .

Mosaic Garden Stepping Stones Class

Other fun coding toys, tools, and activities will be used. Create games, animate new pets, or make your own story from Scratch’s block coding program. 26th Annual Youth Range Camp

The Comal-Guadalupe Soil & Water Conservation District will have its 26th Annual Youth Range Camp for students ages 12 to 17 on July 16 – 18, 2024. The Seguin Public Library will host a free Escape Room at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 28. Get ready to solve puzzles, crack codes, and uncover hidden secrets in the National Treasure Escape Room event. You and your team of historians have learned that the original copy of the Declaration of Independence has been hidden by a secret society. The key to finding the original copy is in the gatekeeper’s office. Can your team solve the puzzles to escape the office with the Declaration of Independence before the gatekeeper arrives back?
