Commissioners may provide much needed election help for city of Marion

(Seguin) -- The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court may provide a big and much needed assist to the city of Marion. The Marion City Council hasn’t met in months. That’s due to the fact that it hasn’t had enough members to establish a quorum. In fact, after the recent resignation of Mayor Daniel Loyola, the city of Marion is down to just one councilmember. Mayor Pro-tem Abigaile Maberry is essentially one of the last two standing, along with Alderman Deshon Blyden. Maberry is expected to present a petition signed by Marion citizens asking the commissioners court to call for a special election to fill the five vacant alderman positions on the Marion City Council. The action, if taken by the court, would allow the city of Marion to host a special election on Tuesday, November 5.

Seguin police, fire officials collecting NEW backpacks for Seguin kids

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Police Department and the Seguin Fire Department are joining forces in an effort to help out students in the Seguin ISD. Police officers and firefighters are collecting clear backpacks. The see-through backpacks are required for students to attend classes in the Seguin ISD.

Police Lt. Mike McCann says they want to collect as many backpacks as they can, then they will be distributed to some well-deserving students.

“We’d like to collect 200 clear backpacks for the students that live within the Seguin Housing Authority (properties),” said McCann.

Back-to-school time can put a lot of stress on household budgets, which is one of the reasons why McCann says they wanted to step up and lend a hand.

“Well, it can be a hardship and backpacks are expensive. All of the kiddos going to school have to take school supplies and all different for different grades. Different teachers ask for different things. Different schools ask for different equipment and supplies. But everybody needs a

backpack. So, since the Seguin ISD has their clear backpack requirement, we thought we could lend a hand getting our kids ready for school,” said McCann.

McCann says it’s not uncommon for both the police and fire departments to try to find ways to give back to the community. He says that’s what they do -- they come to the aid of those in need.

“This is our community. We’re glad to work here. We’re honored to be a part of it, and we always want to support the kids and do whatever

we can to make them successful,” said McCann.

Several dropoff locations have been established for the clear backpacks. They can be taken to the Seguin Police Department, 350 N. Guadalupe St; to Fire Station No. 1, 110 Elm St.; to Fire Station No. 2, at 650 South Highway 46; to Fire Station No. 3, 1330 Highway 123 Bypass North; or to the Fire Administration Building, located at 660 South Highway 46. Again, only new clear backpacks will be accepted

Chamber seeking nomination for best healthcare workers

(Seguin) -- It's now time for you to share who you think is the best healthcare worker in the community. The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce is currently accepting nominations for its 2024 Clinical Healthcare Worker Award. The award will be presented at this year's annual banquet scheduled for Sept. 18.

Explaining exactly what they are looking for is Chester Jenke, the president of the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Anybody can nominate somebody from the clinical healthcare worker field. That clinical healthcare worker is a professional that has some sort of direct patient care, that includes things like diagnosing, treating, testing and providing ongoing care to patients. That's really kind of what defines the clinical healthcare worker. So, it could be a

nurse practitioner, a nurse, a doctor, (or) a specialist inside of those fields. That's really what it's for. The ultimate goal for this is that we're able to tell them thank you for your service inside of our community, as we know that recruiting new doctors and healthcare workers inside of our space is a team effort. We need to make sure that we're acknowledging those folks that are here, that we still appreciate what they do for us and for our community,” said Jenke.

Jenke says each year, the chamber recognizes those who continue to inspire and who make the Seguin community and its business community better. He says while the chamber selects most of its annual winners, this particular award for Clinical Healthcare Worker, is the result of nominations from the community.

Marion, continued.

The city of Marion has been in turmoil were quite sometime. There’s been in-fighting and finger-pointing over a number of issues. As a result, there have been vacant positions unfilled and resignations that have led to the council’s inactivity. Who’s to blame for all of this? That’s not entirely clear, but apparently there is a great deal blame to go around. One thing that is clear is that the election that should have been held in May was missed because the city didn’t submit the proper paperwork in time to get on that ballot.

The lack of meetings has created a great deal of challenges for the city, because there was no formal oversight from its city council. Even if the election is approved, it’s unclear if this would stop much larger problems from surfacing in the near future. Marion’s new fiscal year would begin on October 1. Generally speaking a new budget and tax rate would need to be approved before that date. But because the council doesn’t have a quorum, it leads to a major question about what happens on October 1. With no budget adopted, would the city be able to legally expend public funds for any purpose, including to cover payroll expenses. Those are the kinds of questions that will need to be

Nominations, continued.

“It's along with our other awards for that evening, which is like our Community Service Award, which is the coveted the person inside of our community that does so much for our community and maybe doesn't get the recognition, but we would like to recognize themm and also goes in with our Heroes awards, which are our police and our fire department. It will be a tough one. We have, I believe, five that were

answered later, but the first hurdle has to be restoring the council to its full capacity.

In other business, the commissioners court is expected to receive a presentation on the Cordova Road improvement project. The project calls for major upgrades to be made to the roadway between State Highways 46 and 123. There’s major residential growth occurring on that portion of Cordova Road, and the widening work is greatly needed. The project is being jointing funded by the city of Seguin and Guadalupe County, with the bulk of the funding coming from federal dollars issued by the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO).

Commissioners are also slated to discuss a feedback survey sent out by the Guadalupe Appraisal District. The appraisal district is in need of additional office space, and it has provided a couple of options for the various taxing entities that they serve to consider. Those taxing entities provide the funding to run the appraisal district office.

The meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court gets underway at 10 a.m. today in the Commissioners Courtroom on the third floor of the Guadalupe County Courthouse.

(nominated) already, and I'll tell you what, all five of them are just awesome. I feel kind of sorry for the committee that's got to select the top of those that we already have in our files,” said Jenke.

Jenke says submitting a nomination begins with calling the chamber. From there, the chamber will email individuals the nomination form. The deadline to submit nominations is Thursday, July 25. The chamber can be reached by calling 830-3798263.

(Portland, OR) -- Thousands of people treated at two hospitals in Portland, Oregon may have been exposed to HIV and hepatitis B and C. About 24-hundred people who were patients at two providers, Providence and Legacy Health, are urged to take blood tests as a precaution. That individual, who has not been identified and worked for third-party contractor Oregon Anesthesiology Group, is no longer employed. The tests are being offered for free.

House GOP Votes To Overturn Transgender Protections

(Washington, DC) -- House Republicans have voted to roll back Biden Administration rules aimed at protecting transgender students. The vote, along party lines, would repeal changes made to Title IX [[ nine ]] that prevent discrimination based on sex in schools that receive federal funding. The Department of Education this year expanded the definition of sex discrimination to cover gender identity and sexual orientation. A similar measure is likely to fail in the Democratic-controlled Senate and President Biden has promised to veto any bill that passes.
